They take shelter at Temple Hill. It's Opeli's suggestion: the clerics there are used to providing service to the people, and the Temple of Justice is large enough for most survivors to take refuge, even if it's crowded and awkward and the flagstones are uncomfortable and hard against their backs. The clerics comfort and bandage as many as they can with the help of the remaining soldiers, Soren and Opeli with them, but it's too much, even for the hands that they have.

Katolis has fallen. The fires have burned out but its ruins are still smoking, a smudge against the darkening horizon. The sounds of screams and crumbling towers ring loudly in Soren's ears, even now, and when it's quiet again at last, he seats himself by the hearth at the centre of the temple and lets it all wash over him, his muscles heavy with exhaustion and fatigue.

It's dark now. The stars wink in the sky, unchanged, uncaring that an entire city has been destroyed. And his father—

Soren swallows the feeling before he can even figure out what it is. Part of it is bitterness. Part of it is grief. Most of it is unnamable, a hollow tightness in his chest that he doesn't know how to make sense of, how to feel.

"Are you all right?"

"Hm?" Soren glances up. Opeli is there, her robes covered in ash and soot, the only time he's ever seen them less than pristine, with Hat sitting happily on her shoulder. She twitches her lips sadly, tiredly, and Soren shuffles over with a smile and lets her sit in the space next to him. "As well as I can be, I guess."

She snorts ruefully. "A silly question," she says quietly. "A lot has happened."

"That's one way to put it."

"Hm."

There's a pause. There's not really a lot to say. She knows what happened. She knew what happened before it all too—she'd been the one to counsel him through it. He supposes it's too much to burden her with counselling him through it now as well. She's been through a lot too. Still, she sits, her quiet company more comforting than he thought it could be, the brush of her arm against his enough to remind him that they are both here and alive and it's all they can do for now to take the next breath, and the one after that, and the one after that.

"It's okay to grieve him," she says after a moment.

Soren snorts, a lump in his throat. "He wasn't a good dad. Or a good person. What's there to grieve?"

She touches his shoulder gently. "What could have been. It doesn't have to be anymore complicated than that."

"Hm."

Another pause. Hat climbs off of Opeli's shoulder and clambers onto his. When he blinks, there is wetness in his eyes that he does not try to hide.

Opeli says nothing. She has never needed to say anything more.
