I have recently come across some claims that Goth is strictly a music subculture, and that if a person does not listen to goth music, they are not a *real* goth. I wanted to know your opinions on this, as someone with great knowledge on the gothic subculture and its history.

AHAHAHAHAH oh G-D the never ending argument ... er, debate. The short form of my opinion: Yes, the modern goth subculture sprung out of the postpunk music scene of the late 70s/early 80s. But part of the reason the subculture thrives to this day is that music scene went hand-in-hand with a specific aesthetic and artistic references. And who is defining "goth music"? That umbrella term covers a LOT of sub-genres. There is no checklist of Bands You Must LIsten To In Order To Be Goth. (There isn't, I will fight those who say otherwise.) So. World Goth Day

If you find yourself drinking werewolf coffee and listening to Fields whilst browsing the Lip Service site for something to wear to Whitby Goth, you might be a Goth Rocker.

If you find yourself chain-smoking clove cigarettes while waiting for moonrise, you might be a Goth Rocker.

If you find yourself wanting to go out because it's raining and blowing, but you can't go out because your roots are showing, you might be a Goth Rocker. (apologies to Jeff Foxworthy)

Despite Type O Negative's rejection of the "Goth" label to describe their unique musical style, observant Goths are guaranteed to be listening to two songs today- Type O Negative's "Black No. 1" and Bauhaus' "Bela Lugosi's Dead".

Voltaire, author of the 2004 book What is Goth?, briefly describes his observations of the vintage New York Goth scene:
