we see a lot of mistrali citizens listening to ruby’s broadcast in 8.5: jaune’s sister and in-laws + the crowds in the transit station. it has been months since haven academy closed, but—even more so than vale, which gets the subtle glimpse of the dust shop open for business as usual—it’s made clear that mistral is weathering the storm. in fact, for ordinary civilians, it really seems like not much has significantly changed at all.
with that context, i think it becomes profoundly interesting that 1. ruby doesn’t mention mistral in her broadcast at all—admittedly, in part because there’s no one ozpin trusted left in the kingdom—and 2. the kids direct the evacuation to vacuo, an impoverished state they know to be salem’s next target, instead of mistral, the much larger and more prosperous kingdom that they left behind in perfectly good working order after salem’s forces departed. now in one sense, this was a short-term tactical decision in that the kids have an urgent need to get to vacuo before salem does and, with less than an hour to plan a city-wide evacuation, some longer term strategic thinking obviously fell by the wayside. because, yanno, crisis mode.
but! there’s also a beat in before the dawn where jax thinks “with the global cct disabled, vale in ruin, haven leaderless, and atlas closed off, vacuo was theirs for the taking.” and conversely at another point theodore refers to haven as “mistral academy.” so there is a consistent pattern here—across the full spectrum from villain to corrupt old guard to hero—of equating haven academy to the kingdom of mistral and vice versa. ruby gives a shoutout to glynda (who as far as she knows is still actively fighting to reclaim beacon) but says nothing about surviving haven faculty—or about her other allies, like the belladonnas, who presumably got looped in and earned some serious goodwill from the mistrali public by showing up to prevent another beacon from happening at haven.
the conflation of the academies/the huntsmen with the whole world or humanity itself is nothing new—the entire “salem wants to destroy the world/salem wants to destroy the academies” blurriness can only exist because the civilian world is so invisible from within the huntsmen institution—but this feels like it might be the most important occurrence, because there were explicitly thousands of people in mistral watching this broadcast and hearing this huntress mention BEACON but not haven or mistral.
and most of those people would have heard cinder’s broadcast during the vytal festival tournament. the broadcast where she identified herself as mistrali and specifically gestured toward the “undesirable” situation with the huntsmen institution there. what does ruby’s broadcast tell these people?
- the powerful, malevolent entity responsible for the horrific fall of beacon intends to “destroy the huntsman academies”
- this entity already attacked haven, forced the academy to close, and then left. they weathered the storm. they’re safe.
- this person—or someone connected to her, at least—claimed to act out of resistance to, as she saw it, the corrupt and tyrannical huntsmen institution, especially in mistral, and the huntress on the broadcast effectively confirmed that claim
- the huntress in the broadcast also doesn’t acknowledge that mistral even exists
- ???
talk about planting seeds of doubt.
and ordinarily i’d stick this in the headcanon/fic fodder pile because the narrative is clearly headed to vacuo, but… a decent chunk of the major supporting cast is stranded in atlas now. with a falling communications satellite and what amounts to a flying pickup truck as their only resources, meaning that basically the only place they can reasonably escape to is argus.
oh. and anima already has a fairly sizable population of people who don’t like how the kingdom runs things enough to take their chances with the grimm and rampant banditry rather than live within the kingdom’s protection
#ruby tried to be honest without losing control over the narrative#and maybe she did—for vale and vacuo and mantle#but for mistral?#what do the people of mistral make of all this#without a huntress to guide them?

I know people have picked up on the board game scene in RWBY V2 Episode 2 (Welcome to Beacon) as foreshadowing the events of the show, but for funsies I want to take a stab at how it foreshadows the general arcs of each four kingdoms myself.
So we have Blake playing as the Kingdom of Vale, and she's completely unaware of the events of the game unfolding and not really paying attention, clearly distracted.
"Alright Blake, it's your turn!"
"Huh? Sorry, what am I doing?"
"You're playing as Vale, trying to conquer the four kingdoms of Remnant!"
"...Right."
The Vale arc is the first three volumes of RWBY, where all our protagonists are at Beacon, but during that time, much like Blake during the game, they're unaware of the larger conflict with Salem, and aren't actively participating in the war at that point. They are ignorant and reactive instead of active. However it's ironic that Blake plays as Vale, since the reason she's not paying attention to the game and seems distracted is because, out of all the main characters in the Vale arc, she is the one most concerned about being kept in the dark and that they're ignorant as to what's really going on.
Blake: I just, I don't understand how everyone can be so calm.
Ruby: (approaching Blake) You're still thinking about Torchwick?
Blake: Torchwick, the White Fang, all of it! Something big is happening and no one is doing anything about it!
She also leaves the game during her turn, much like how she runs away after the FoB and the end of the Vale arc.
"Right. Well, I think I'm done playing, actually"
Yang is playing as Mistral, and she's the most savvy and knowledgeable (hah) player, winning many rounds of the game, teaching Weiss how to play, and has the other players falling into her trap cards.
"Heh, pretty sneaky sis, but you just activated my trap card!"
There's two ways this can be interpreted, with how the Mistral arc (volumes 4-6) is when our protagonists start to gather more knowledge and awarenesses of themselves and the world. It's also in Mistral that our heroes have their most decisive victory so far. It's fitting to have Yang playing as Mistral then, since during the Mistral arc she's the one who who learns from Tai to fight smarter, and to question the authority figures around her from Raven, and after confronting her in the vault is the one who retrives the relic of knowledge.
But, most of the losses our heroes experience are because of Cinder, who is from Mistral, and them falling into her own "trap cards" with the Fall of Beacon being orchestrated by her, killing Pyrrha and Ozpin. And in Atlas the same, with her manipulating Ironwood, undermining the heroes plans to evacuate everyone from Atlas, and killing Penny. She often finds ways to trick and exploit others, and is most dangerous when overlooked and underestimated, like falling into a trap.
Which brings me to Ruby playing as Atlas, where Ruby and Yang have this exchange after Yang's trap card is activated by Ruby:
"Giant Nevermore! If I roll a seven or higher, fatal feathers will slice your fleet in two!
"But! If you roll lower a six or lower, the Nevermore will turn on your own forces!"
"That's just a chance I'm willing to take"
In the Atlas arc (volumes 7-9) the theme of trust and taking risks is very prevalent. Like the move Yang makes in the game it is a risky one, that could end badly for her, but it is one worth taking nonetheless. They take the risk of trusting Ironwood but he ends up turning on our heroes. Oscar takes a risk trusting Hazel and Ozpin, as well as Emerald later on being accepted into their group, and it ends up working out for them. Ruby takes a risky chance in sending a message out to all of Remnant and evacuating Atlas, which saves a lot of people, but they still lose some, including Penny, a dear friend of Ruby's.
"Noooooo! My fearless soldiers!"
"Eh, most of them were probably androids anyways"
"Goodbye my friends... you will be avenged!"
Ruby acts distraught when losing her turn in the game as Atlas, expressing anguish over losing her friends who are described as androids by Yang, just like how Ruby is incredibly depressed and broken after the Fall of Atlas in V9, mourning the loss of Penny, who was both a sentient android and Ruby's friend. (I do wonder if Ruby's comment on avenging her friends might be foreshadowing for her wanting to avenge Penny's death in the future, like how Jaune tried to 1v1 Cinder in V5 to avenge Pyrrha, but I think it's too soon to say)
As a sidenote the fact it is a Nevemore in this turn that has a chance of turning on Yang or helping her is interesting, as it puts me in mind of two characters who can turn into ravens/crows, like the bird and poem Nevermore is associated with. It could pertain to Raven, someone who turns on Yang in v5 during the battle of Haven, but appears to help her and her friends in the V9 epilogue. It could also be about Qrow and his semblance, since during the Atlas arc it begins to evolve so that it is not simply a bad luck semblance, but one that can generate good luck too. In other words he can affect whether the chances are in people's favour or not.
After defeating Ruby (Atlas) Yang says this:
Yang: Not until I draw my rewards! Which are double this round thanks to the Mistral Trade Route!
Ruby: Bah!
Yang: Oh, and what's this? The Smugglers of Wind Path?
Ruby: Bah! Bah, I say!
Yang: I say, it looks like I'm taking two cards in my hand!
After the Fall of Atlas Cinder retrives not one but two relics for Salem, and with Atlas falling into Mantle, two kingdoms are destroyed in one fell swoop.
Then it's Weiss's turn. Weiss is playing as Vacuo, but has no idea how to play the game. Yang takes it upon herself to teach Weiss how to play and what she can do to win the game:
Yang: Well, Weiss, it's your turn.
Weiss: I have... absolutely no idea what's going on.
Yang: (Yang slides up beside her and puts her hand on her shoulder.) Look, it's easy! You're playing as Vacuo which means that all Vacuo-based cards come with a bonus.
Weiss: That sounds dumb.
Yang: See, you've got Sandstorm, Desert Scavenge... Oh, oh! (She pulls up a card to show Weiss.) Resourceful Raider! See, now you can take Ruby's discarded Air Fleet—
Ruby: (crying) Nooo!
Yang: —and put it in your hand!
We know from the end of V9 that what remains of the airfleet of Atlas, as well as the airfleet of Mistral and Vale, have all flocked to Vacuo's defence. What remains of the kingdom of Atlas, the airfleet, but most importantly the people, have now fled to Vacuo and are trying to make a home there.
Yang continues to give Weiss advice on how to win the game to Weiss, building her up, until Weiss starts to get arrogant, believing she's going to win the whole game and is the one in control:
Yang: And since Vacuo warriors have an endurance against Natural-based hazards, you can use Sandstorm to disable my ground forces and simultaneously infiltrate my kingdom! (Yang points a finger at Weiss.) Just know that I will not forget this declaration of war.
Weiss: And that means...
Ruby: You're just three moves away from conquering Remnant!
But then Yang turns on Weiss, activating her trap card, and Vacuo loses.
Since this is may be foreshadowing for the Vacuo arc that we haven't seen yet, I can only speculate what this might mean.
...But judging from the V9 extended epilogue and the books, my best guess would be that if Yang/Mistral is meant to be in part Cinder/Salem and their forces, then Weiss as Vacuo is in part the Crown. In the extended epilogue Jax and Gillian appear to be recieving help from Tyrian and Mercury, meaning Salem has decided to recruit them to her cause.
The Crown wants to restore the Vacuoan monarchy and detest outsiders, especially Atlesians. They do however wish to protect Vacuo from the same forces that destroyed Beacon, aka Salem, and so they are likely going to be manipulated like Weiss is by Yang in the game, being offered aid and giving them advice on how they can win and achieve their objectives, making them believe they can "conquer Remnant", only for them to realise later they were being tricked and used.
"Once again, Vacuo had been isolated from the conflict raging throughout Remnant—only this time it was an opportunity. With the global CCT network disabled, Vale in ruin, Haven leaderless, and Atlas closed off, Vacuo was theirs for the taking. This was likely their last, best chance for a generation. And it was their only hope to defend Vacuo against whomever had been targeting the other kingdoms. In likelihood they had written off Vacuo, like everyone else did, but if they tried to move against the Crown, they would have an unpleasant surprise.
Vacuo wouldn't break this time around."
Weiss: (Weiss stands and a thunder clap accompanies Weiss' overjoyed psychotic laughter.) Y-yes! Fear the almighty power of my forces! Cower as they pillage your homes and weep as they take your children from your very arms!
Yang: Trap card... (Yang's arm appears holding the card.)
Weiss: Huh?
Yang: (Yang shuffles the pieces on the board, Weiss' pieces disappearing in a puff of smoke.) Your armies have been destroyed.
Weiss: (Weiss slumps in her chair, cries and whines.) I hate this game of emotions we play!
Weiss as Vacuo may lose to Yang after realising they've been tricked, but is offered comfort afterwards by Ruby who relates to her losses and empathises with her, which is interesting since Ruby plays as Atlas. So I'm predicting at the end of the Vacuo arc they'll experience somewhat of a loss, whether that's the Crown, our heroes, or likely both, but Atlas will give support to Vacuo and the two kingdoms will come together to heal and ultimately work together, making steps to overcome their tense history with one another.
"Stay strong Weiss we'll make it through this together!"
"Shut up, don't touch me! "
...Which does make Weiss specifically playing as Vacuo especially intriguing, as she is the SDC heiress from Atlas, and Vacuo is a kingdom that has suffered the most in being exploited and colonized for it's natural resources by Atlas. From the epilogue it seems like the Schnees are being confronted directly with all the harm that has been caused by their family and kingdom, so I wouldn't be surprised if Weiss recieves a certain amount of focus during the Vacuo arc in deciding what her legacy as an Atlesian and heiress to the Schnee name will be. Moving forward to make amends, maybe inspiring the citizens of Atlas/Mantle to come together with Vacuo so they can all help and support one another, instead of isolating themselves and suffering alone.
Jaune offers to plays Weiss's hand for a turn also, with Weiss refusing:
Jaune: (Begging with both hands folded together.) Come on, let me play your hand for a turn!
Weiss: I'm not trusting you with the good citizens of Vacuo!
Which is reminiscent of how Vacuo is mistrustful of outsiders, as we've seen in After the Fall and Before the Dawn books.
Yang follows up to say that Weiss attacked her own forces, which could reference the infighting in Vacuo, especially with the Crown.
Weiss: Besides, this game requires a certain level of tactical cunning that I seriously doubt that you possess.
Yang: Uhh, you attacked your own naval fleet two turns ago. (Weiss makes an annoyed sound.)
Overall Weiss as Vacuo recieves the most help as any player during their turn, being taught how to play by Yang, offered comfort by Ruby after losing, and Jaune wanting to help her by playing her hand for a turn. This seems to fit with both how all kingdoms have flocked to Vacuo's aid in response to Ruby's message, but also Weiss as a character, who starts out "the loneliest of them all" but gradually opens up and warms up to other people. The crux of her arc being looking outside herself and at the people around her, relating to their struggles and coming to support them and being supported by them leads to her better understanding herself and becoming stronger for it... Which is kind of what the Kingdom of Vacuo needs to learn too!
Following this is Blake's turn as Vale, which I covered at the start of this post, but that's not the end of Vale's turn. We don't actually see it, but we know the aftermath of the game is this:
Yang: Ugh, we should have never let him play!
Ruby: You're just mad cuz' the new guy beat you!
Blake leaves the game during her turn as Vale, and presumably the "new guy" which is likely Neptune, who they'd just been introduced too, takes over her hand as Vale and wins the game of Remnant overall, even beating Yang and her trap cards. This is likely the endgame of RWBY itself, our heroes return to Vale after the Vacuo arc during the last volume for the final stand, where they win.
How and what that victory will look like I don't know, as we don't see the last turn of the game, so yet again this is even more vaguer speculation. Neptune doesn't really have much plot significance so I can't think there's any meaning to that except that he's a minor foil to Jaune, and the line of it being "a new guy" that wins, so maybe someone who recently joins our heroes side in the final act of the story, possibly Mercury or Cinder.

FR Skin Contests and You (and Me)
Let’s talk about festival skin contests.
This post will be 1) about win conditions 2) my breakdown on my wins/losses. Before we start, please know a lot of this is guesswork, and based on my own perspective. Still, I hope this will be useful for some people ^^
***August/888 and I (but August mostly as it’s his idea) will be hosting an event encouraging new artists to join festival contests on 8/8. It will have a lot of tips and references to help get you started, so please keep an eye out!
-
When it comes to skin contests, people generally enter for one of three reasons: 1) for fun 2) because it’s seen as a milestone of skinmaking, or 3) out of a desire to push yourself to the limit knowing you’ll regret it like a Sunday hangover– but I hope that’s just me.
In my two years of participating in skin contests, I’ve seen a lot of artists join with a lot of excitement, only to give up or drop out because they aren’t winning. Some blame it on skill, others blame it on the staff, and some blame it on fellow competitors.
Here’s what I will say: like any contest, winning the festival skin contest is based on a combination of luck, knowledge, and skill. Just like any contest, there is a strategy to it and there are win conditions that you have to fulfill if you want a chance at winning. Some artists find these win conditions quickly and are able to adapt and cultivate the skill needed to pull off a win. Some are aware of these win conditions but do not yet have the skill to pull off a win. And some aren’t aware at all. A loss is usually (but not always) a result of not fulfilling those win conditions, or not fulfilling them as much as another artist.
So, let’s talk about these win conditions.
The Biggest Win Condition: Breed Variety
In my opinion, the biggest factor that makes or breaks an entry is breed variety. Over the past ten years, there's been a consistent trend of staff picking one winner per breed/pose, though there are occasional outliers (most recently, two Aether M for Brightshine, but previously also Undertide M and Spiral M). This means whenever you submit a skin, you’re competing against artists that also submitted the same breed/pose.
For those who aren’t aware, breed variety has been dropping in contests, along with the number of submissions. The result is that there are very few submissions for less popular breeds. Take a look at Brightshine 2023 - the majority of the submissions were Aethers. But even if there ended up being three Aether wins, that meant none of the other Aether skins made it in.
I want to explain this with numbers. Say Aethers (M&F) made up 60% of the Brightshine 2023 submissions but could only make it into 2 or 3/16 of the winning slots. That’s 60% of the submissions eliminated from making it into the remaining 13/16 slots. Where would the other 13/16 skins come from, if staff were to stick to their trend of 1 breed/pose skin per festival? The flight breeds - Imp and PC might take up 4 more slots. But that’s still 9/16 slots that need winners and only 30% of the submissions to pick from. Additionally, ancients will generally make up at least 40% of the winning submissions, if not 50%. That’s why having 100 submissions might mean there aren’t a lot of winners the staff could pick, and why there weren’t any Fae skins for Starfall 2022 or Spiral M skins for Mistral 2023.
I tested this theory with F Ridgeback submissions. I mainly focused on three breed/poses that I saw as the least submitted - F Noc, F Bog, and F Ridgeback. I went with Ridgeback because it was the base I liked the most. The result? Out of the 22 contests I’ve entered, I won 5 with F Ridgeback. That’s a 25% win rate with one breed/pose alone. If we factor in wins I’ve had with these three poses combined, that’s 8 wins or a 36% win rate.
Drawing on an unpopular breed/pose is a good way to make sure you don’t have too many competitors (and also show some of the more unpopular breeds some love). This is particularly true if you’re a newer artist like I was. I started doing art in June 2021, so I knew there was no chance I could outcompete better artists on the same breed/pose.
Of course, choosing the right breed will not always net you a win - you still need good skin composition and skills to catch the staff’s attention, which is what we’re going to talk about next.
Statutory Win Conditions: Flight Themes & Colors
When it comes to making a skin for a festival contest, I always recommend people look at the apparel, lore, and familiars for that flight, because these items are usually the closest to what’s canonically considered a flight’s aesthetic. A lot of the entries I’ve seen win are based off of the fest fams or match a fest apparel.
There are exceptions. The game aspect of the Lightning Flight isn’t canon, but we’ve had hivemind and gaming skins win. Why? Maybe that contest only had a total of 12-15 breed/poses submitted, maybe it was just the best executed skin for that breed/pose, maybe a staff member just really liked it. However, generally winners will match the flight’s canon aesthetic.
The trend of skin contest winners also suggest a favoring of elements that are placed on the dragon’s wings and head (leaves, vines, fairy/insect wings, gears), or accent/tattoo-like effects that involve gradient, sparkles, or abstract smoke (see 888’s 2023 brightshine win). Skin compositions that are balanced (elements throughout the body, as opposed to just one part of the body) see a higher win rate. Skins that have lower accent coverage tend to see higher win rates when they’re gradients/accents (linings on the dragon, runic/circuit effects) or when they’re concentrated on an easily noticeable/central part of the body (like the wings, or the dragon’s back).
In the end, knowing what to draw really comes down to research and knowledge. Before each contest I would review all the past winning entries and try to glean what staff did or didn’t pick. I noticed that staff didn’t tend to pick whiteout or body morph skins, and they tend to pick skins with higher coverage. I also checked past festival winners to see the color theme for each contest. There are some contests during which colors that aren’t necessarily the flight’s colors are still picked, and there are contests that haven’t seen a festival skin which didn’t match the flight’s colors. Like any contest, there’s always going to be a small bit of luck involved.
Ultimately, while I can’t speak for the staff, I do think there are win conditions that need to be fulfilled. You need to have a basic level of art skill. You need knowledge on skin composition and colors. Then, of course, you need to know which breed/pose to choose.
-
I hope my analysis helps a little when you’re entering your next contest, or that it made for an interesting read. If you just came here for general tips and tricks, that’s all I have for you - you can also scroll all the way down to see my final thoughts on contests. But generally, just keep trying different things, doing your research, and making sure you’re sticking to the flight theme.
For people who want it, here’s my breakdown on each series of contests that I’ve entered, and reasons why I think I won or lost.
-
Personal Analysis - Brightshine 2021-Brightshine 2023
I’m a very competitive person and more importantly, I love to compete. So the moment I found myself capable of making skins, festivals were on my radar. I studied what previous artists did, what techniques and designs seem to win the most. What skills did I need and what skins caught the judges' eyes? More importantly, what bases did I feel confident with and could perform the best on? As soon as I felt like I understood the contest, I entered Brightshine 2021 with about 2 weeks’ worth of art experience.
Then I proceeded to lose four contests in a row.
So, what happened?
Brightshine 2021 (loss)
Sometimes unearthing your old art is like watching an old video of yourself in your cringey teenager phase. But knowing why you lost is important in understanding how you can win (and what to absolutely not do again).
For Brightshine 2021, I submitted a Guard F design with two recolors. At the time I only had the skill to draw lanterns and filigree, so I went “that’s Light enough” and did exactly that. Although I would say my theme was (kind of) on point, it was my execution that was lacking:
Issue No. 1: Colors. In review of previous Light winners there’s a umber/gold palette or gold/sunlight palette that appears to be the meta. There have also been cases of red or purple winning even though they aren’t used in official Light items, and some rainbow entries. While one of my recolors followed this scheme, it fell short because–
Issue No. 2: Composition. Skin composition is the balance of elements and how well each element pulls their weight in a piece of art. In my Brightshine 2021 entry, most of the base was left bare. Artists like August are really good at skin comp where their entire piece looks tied together; mine was far from that.
Issue No. 3: Quality. If you compare my Brightshine 2021 submission to my 2023 one, you’ll see what I mean. My art style relies on rendering, or applying lighting and shadows, to bring out each element. Basically I need rendering in order to win. This isn’t necessarily a requirement for you; some artists do lineless, others do painterly, and others don’t render at all, but overall the art style should have a specific level of quality that rendering brought out in my art.
In short: wrong colors, bad lineart, skill issue, no skin comp - overall it was a piece of art not even its creator could love. (I tossed the psd in the recycling bin and hit delete. Except looking in the database now apparently I printed it, so now I have to live with the shame of its existence.)
There is one takeaway that I got. By the time the contest ended there were no other Guard F entries. I realized then that had my art been better, with the breed/pose’s lack of competition, I could’ve had a shot at winning the contest.
Thundercrack 2021 (loss)
Alright, 2021 Myth thinks, I’ve learned my lesson from Brightshine. The skin composition was not good. That means I should put more stuff on the base and I’m sure to win!
Have you ever just looked in the mirror and realized you, yes you, are the most punchable thing in the world?
In all fairness, the skin comp of my TCC entry did improve. Like Brightshine, I did a single design with two recolors on an unpopular breed. Improvements I made: additional elements to the skin aside from the one big element on the wing, and a color palette that matched the flight. Of course, I wished my theme of hivemind/code also matched the flight aesthetic, but just like my love life, the only thing my submission matched with was loss and disappointment.
Issue No. 1: Design. Upon reviewing past winners, very few featured fake apparel or clothing. As mentioned previously, staff do not appear to favor whiteout or body morph skins, and prefer elements that adhere to the dragon (like wings) or add to the dragon (like bones/feathers).
Issue No 2: Technology. For my entry, the circuit patterning on the wings did not take resizing well. I drew this on a 750x750 canvas and the resizing blended the many circuit lines into a single line. This isn’t a program issue. It was a lack of understanding of how resizing works.
Issue No 3: And we’re still here with my biggest problem: skill issue. Art is not a skill you learn in two months. I did learn to render, but not well enough. I wasn’t good enough. Yet.
Starfall 2021 (loss)
So… fun fact! During all of this I was writing my thesis. As in, I was writing my thesis after not writing my thesis for a year. It was stressful. I don’t have much to say about this contest because I did this skin as a meme for the sole reason that somewhere in my 3 am sleep deprived brain I thought “Emergency Portal-col” was hilarious.
I did not expect to win and I didn’t. Still, I did notice more and more that certain breeds just weren’t submitted for contests. Ridgeback F, I noticed, had anywhere from 0 to 1 submission for each contest while M pose generally had 0. Same for Nocturnes.
Riot of Rot 2021 (loss)
By this time, 2021 Myth had given up on the “one big element + some other accessories” idea. It hadn’t worked for Light or Lightning and it wasn’t going to work. So I thought, what if I just went for the accessory elements? My ROR skin featured the spider lily, smoke, and sparkles. I also started experimenting with dark gradients on the limbs of the dragon, which I’d noticed in winning fest entries.
Gradients and sparkles help with skin composition. Especially if you’re a newer artist who can’t pull off more complicated effects. Oftentimes a skin looks empty in certain parts, but adding elements to those parts would make things look messier. That’s where gradients/sparkles come in. However, I lost because:
Issue No 1: Composition again. While my elements tied together well, I had no main attraction other than the empty void that was the center of the Ridgeback wing. I essentially did a background scene and didn’t add a main character for it. This made me think that maybe my “one big element” skin comp idea was still worth a shot, but I needed a different take.
Issue No 2: Aaaand skill issue again.I was still bad at rendering, and sometimes skill is just why you lose. Not because you don’t have good ideas or because your execution was bad, but because you do not yet have the skills to defeat your competitors. You can do a really good looking skin, but if someone else in the contest did an even better looking skin on the breed/pose, then you’re not going to win.
Gala 2021 (win)
Losing four times in a row was pretty discouraging. But here’s another important element to skin contests: consistency. The frequency of your submissions should result in a win so long as you fulfill all of the other win conditions such as good composition, understanding of the theme, and the basic level of art skill required to win.
For the Gala, I realized that wings would be the best big element to put on a base while tying in all of the other elements. This is probably the most complicated skin I’d worked on at that time. But because I’d learned minimal rendering, because my skin composition was actually good, and there was no competition for Ridgeback F, I won. For the very first time.
Trickmurk 2021 - Starfall 2022 (6 wins 2 losses - 12 skin designs submitted total)
Here, I’d found my strategy. As long as I kept to the theme and made sure my skin comp and rendering was good, I would win. Especially because I had no competition. Again, breed variety is a huge issue in skin contests, because people - particularly the really skilled artists - are more likely to go for a breed that they like or is popular. As a newer artist, I was well aware that there was a 100% chance I’d lose if I tried to fight anyone for the same breed/pose. (And part of knowing the win conditions is also knowing artists you definitely are not winning against.)
3/6 of my wins during this time was F Ridgeback. The others were: F Coatl, which had no competition during Trickmurk, and F Nocturne, which had no competition during Wind and Arcane’s fests (but competed against my will to live because this is a terrible base to work on).
But relying on unpopular breed advantage was about as reliable as internet connection in a college dorm. 3/6 of my wins were ridgeback but that meant all of my losses were also ridgeback. On top of that, the number of Ridgeback submissions peaked at one point to 5-6. I was still winning, because I had the skill to beat my competitors. But I had to up my game. My skins had to be more elaborate, closer to the theme. I began submitting two designs per competition, which was… going to be a problem for me later.
The idea behind submitting two designs per competition is simple. Instead of just relying on one unpopular breed/pose to net you the win, now you have two shots at winning.
My goal that I’d made during this time was to either win 11 in a row or to win once for each holiday. This was to keep my motivation. Keep in mind I was also writing my thesis, so I really needed a goal to go towards, especially when I committed to doing two designs per contest.
(I defended my thesis successfully in May 2022 and graduated with high honors!)
ROR 2022 - Brightshine 2023 (7 wins 1 loss - 16 skin designs submitted total)
Here’s where I found another niche in the skin contests. Flight-breeds. These are breeds that belong to each element and surprisingly - they don’t actually get that many submissions. Seeing Starfall 2022’s skin turnout as an Arcanite was tough. When it came to reviewing Starfall 2022, anyone would’ve won as long as they submitted a good quality Fae skin that didn’t break the rules or stray too far from the theme and had a skin composition that the staff liked.
I decided to put my theory to the test with Earth, Ice, Wind, Water, and Nature. Are you surprised there were only three Snap F submissions for Earth, one Tun M for Ice, two SDM for Wind, and something like two Undertide F entries for Water? I was. Especially with Undertides because the breed had been released only five months ago. By noticing the flight-breed meta, and having the time, skill, and experience to make skins for those breeds that fit the criteria, I was able to win.
At this time I started straying away from my “one big element + smaller accessories” composition. My art had gotten better so I was able to expand my designs. Wavecrest 2023 was the biggest show of that, and I’m really proud of my entries for that contest. It was essentially a turning point in my art style… but it did take a lot more time and effort. From that point on, my skins were hitting 90+ layers and taking me at least two weeks to draw.
The last skin contest I entered with that art style was Brightshine 2023. By the time the contest ended, I was pretty sure winning would take a miracle or a relationship with god that I did not have. The competition for Imp M was difficult, and I was pitting my submission against artists who had far more experience and skill. I had some hope for my Ridge F entry, but again, relying on unpopular breed advantage is, well. Not reliable.
I lost. It was crushing, because not only did that mean I lost Brightshine three years in a row, Brightshine was the last contest I needed to win to fulfill either one of my goals: winning 11 in a row or win once for each elemental holiday. However, losses happen and it sucks, but it’s not the end of the world. I simply lost to a much better artist, and I am okay with that.
Final Thoughts
Heart-to-heart time.
I know some people become discouraged because they don’t think they have the skill, or they compare themselves to other artists. I felt discouraged for the same reason. After losing so many contests in 2021, I thought I would never improve. I would never be as good as artists that started long before me, or even some that started after me but learned so much faster.
I still think that’s true. I have a long way to go and I may never catch up to these other artists. But here’s the thing about art: it’s a skill that constantly evolves and you cannot see that evolution unless you keep trying. And you need to keep trying if you want to win, because you aren’t going to without reaching the right skill level.
The hardest truth about competitions is that you can’t expect to win just because you tried. If everyone could win just by participating – that contest isn’t worth winning. There are no stakes so there is no value. But when you put in a lot of effort and time, and you win? That win is something that will stay with you. That is a worthwhile win - because it was hard and because you lost so many times.
Sure, the staff could let everyone who enters win. Maybe winners should be judged solely on participation. Maybe that would make more people happy. But would you really be happy to win, knowing there’s no chance of losing? At that point, would being a festival contest winner mean anything?
In the end, a contest is supposed to be fun. Throw everything I’ve said out the window if that’s made contests un-fun for you. Most, MOST importantly, you should join the competition because you enjoy it. If you’re joining just to win, and you take losses very hard, and participation becomes a chore - then that is never going to be worth the toll on your mental health.
Take it from someone who took it too seriously. Drawing two skin designs monthly was taxing (remember it was taking me at least 2 weeks per design), and by Nature 2023 I had severe burnout. When Brightshine rolled around, I sat down for 11 hours to finish my Imp entry, because I knew I wouldn’t have time for art later. By the time I finished, I was running on about five hours of sleep and a very unhealthy attachment to caffeine.
Then, three days before Brightshine, I was diagnosed with tendonitis.
I started feeling discomfort in my arms/wrist since March, hence why I stopped releasing public skins. But this is effectively the worst arm related injury I’ve had, and while drawing is not the main cause, doing so for 11 hours straight didn’t help. My left arm has minor pain. My right arm is swollen and in a brace. This could’ve been avoided by taking breaks and doing exercises. But the lack of proper precaution led to injury. (And yes, I drew my Bogsneak TCC 2023 entry with a mouse for this reason. I could not use my tablet pen so… circle and line tool it was. But I had fun ^^)
I hope my analysis of the contests will be of some use to you. But please do not hurt yourself, mentally or physically, in competing. UMA artists make around 3kg per run of skin, so if you are entering contests for the prize, that’s not the best use of your time and energy. When it comes down to it, you are going to be doing free art for the site, and that is never worth injuring yourself for.
As a final note, thank you to the FR staff for allowing artists to participate in the site. My art experience is purely derived from skins and contests have encouraged me to improve myself. Thank you also to my friends who cheered me on along the way, the many wonderful artists who gave me tips on line weight, coloring, and rendering. And of course, many thanks to August for being the best cheerleader I could have. I would not have made it to Brightshine without him as a competitor and fellow artist.
(However nothing you do will make me like Gaolers and that is a hill I will die on.)
Happy almost-Flameforger’s everyone! Here’s to the next fest cycle.

In the modern publishing landscape, these days, I think like we do not have many (if any) point-of-view characters with low social motivation for whatever reason.
Sure, there are lots of characters with social anxiety or other perceived or legitimate foibles to overcome, there are many YA villain origin stories, and there are many unpalatable, traditionally "unlikable" men in classics, but disregarding those, who else do we have?
Can the state of openly being alone (and content) rarely be presented as morally-neutral or as the end result of a narrative? Must it always be that either being alone is the starting point, so there's room for "personal growth," or that being alone is seen as "undesirable" and/or an indication that the person alone has a "problem" or something otherwise wrong with them, like a deficit or moral failing that in some kind of karmic way gives them "what they deserve," which is being alone and discontent with it?
Characters with society anxiety, any differences in communication, or other reasons that interfere with forging connections "don't count" because they may still be motivated. Traits such as these only stand in the way of gaining relationships, as plot obstacles. They aren't intrinsically tied to indifference or to low motivation. So, these characters clearly are not experiencing a lack of interest. And they are not the ones rejecting others. Thus, they "don't count" as far as the archetype that I'm looking for goes.
Characters who undergo villain arcs or otherwise negative arcs may want to maintain their relationships or gain them, so some examples are immediately disqualified (hence not having low social motivation), even if they are the type of character most likely to alienate themselves by a story's end, conflicting with what they wanted.
(Unfortunately, Coriolanus Snow, who is quite close to the type of protagonist I'm searching for "doesn't count" because he has some drive to keep people in his life.
Rafal Mistral partially "counts," and is satisfying as a character, but also doesn't count because he temporarily makes "friends" or allies, depending on how you look at his exploits. Yet, despite all this, not having friends isn't exactly framed as a morally-neutral state either, so he is also disqualified by the end. Basically, he does have low social motivation, but his narrative lacks the conditions that would make the natural consequences of that low motivation play out for themselves. He is always surrounded by people, even if he hates every last one of them.
And, generally speaking, the usual, moody-broody, "misunderstood" YA love-interests very easily "don't count" because they have a desire to get closer to their object of affection.
Even Katniss Everdeen, an overall good person, who usually views herself as "unlikable," befriends others, originally for pragmatic, survival purposes. However, she does start with low social motivation, so that's something in her favor.
And yes, I'm aware that we need other people in this world—I would just like to see someone prove that supposed truth wrong once. And perhaps succeed in their world, if that's not too much to ask for.)
Also, are there any instances of characters who progressively alienate themselves from others, in which that progression is not inherently seen as negative? Like, what about non-corrupt misanthropes? Are there few of those in literature? (Maybe—Eleanor Oliphant from literary fiction counts, but something about that book did not appeal me and I didn't finish it.)
Classics guys sort of "count," but I haven't really seen examples of any comparable protagonists today since many authors and readers write and look for "relatability" in blank slate everyman figures oftentimes.
(I'm not done with Crime and Punishment yet, but Raskolnikov is very tentatively looking like a safe bet for a character who may end up alone and who may not be completely malcontent over such a fate, even if I'm expecting tragedy. I'm that not far along, but I also wouldn't mind it too greatly if he died, I suppose.
And even Sherlock Holmes has Watson as his constant, even if he's notoriously asocial! So he "doesn't count" either.
Carol from Main Street also comes close, but still ultimately desires approval from others.
Maybe no one is truly immune to humanity and I should give up on this notion?)
How many pov characters out there are 1) apathetic toward the masses and 2a) either alienate themselves as the plot progresses or 2b) do not make any friends? (I will allow them making friends and consequently losing them though because that still ends in net zero!)
Indeed, this "gap" in protagonists I've been running into lately, especially with coming-of-age arcs and protagonists whose arc is some form of "getting out of their shell," is: why do we (almost?) never see protagonists who just flat-out don't progress in terms of connecting with fellow humans?
Wouldn't having even a handful of those types be reflective of reality? (We as a society are more disconnected than ever, to be fair, despite constantly having access to one another via technology.)
Or I would completely understand it, if it were narratively impractical to have a plot in which a protagonist makes zero friends. Maybe, it's a near-unwritable form for a story?
So, my question is: does anyone have book recommendations, which present a character whose end goal is not to make friends or forge connections (any other ambitions or motivations are fine) and whose state of being friendless both lasts and is regarded as morally-neutral or as not outright evil? Any genre is fine. High fantasy is preferable. I am stumped.
(I also wouldn't mind recommendations of books in which the protagonist is vilified due to being alone, even if that is not my primary query here.)

*Ruby and Weiss dress Jaune up in a turquoise button up and jeans in a mall*
Ruby: “Yes! We made him hot!”
Weiss: *rolls her eyes but high fived Ruby’s hand anyways* “He was always conventionally attractive. Except when he was noodly. Once he got that broad chest and wide shoulders he became much more attractive.”
Ruby: “How about a hoodie or two?”
Jaune: “I haven’t worn a hoodie in seriously a year or more."
Ruby: “Maybe they aren’t for you. Well, they are for you. But maybe they’re for us.”
Jaune: “What do you want with my hoodies?”
Weiss: “She wants to steal them and wear them to bed.”
Jaune: “Just steal a shirt of mine. I don’t mind.”
Ruby: “But I used to steal your bunny hoodie in Anima and wear that and it was comfortable. And I had it after Mistral and it smelled like you.”
Jaune: “You did?”
Weiss: “She was wearing it all the time in those days after Salem took you in Mistral. I had to rustle her out of it because it started to stink. She was really depressed and your hoodie made her feel better.”
Jaune: “I don’t suppose you also want to wear a hoodie, Weiss? Or will you rise above and resist the urge?”
Weiss: “I might. It was comfortable sleeping in one of your shirts. Why? Do you like it when we wear your clothes?”
Jaune: “It’s a tiny bit sexy seeing you in something I wear with only a bra or nothing on underneath. What isn’t sexy about that?”
Weiss: “No. You should explain. Why does that turn you on?”
Jaune: “Why does leaving love bites on your neck turn me on? It’s a symbol that you’re mine. So is you in my shirt or hoodie I suppose.”
Ruby: “You have to wear them, though. Or else they won’t pick up your smell.”
Jaune: “See?” *points at Ruby* “See that desire to be around my stink? And to smell like me? That’s sexy and a little proud. Like my flag flying over a ship.”
Weiss: “You don’t stink.”
Jaune: “You knew what I meant. How else can I explain it? It’s a sign that you want me, which is sexy. And it’s a sign that you’re mine, also sexy. Why do you like wearing my clothes?”
Ruby: “Because I’m yours. I like smelling like you and smelling you all the time. I like being wrapped up in your smell. Because I love you. It makes me feel small and safe at the same time.”
Jaune: “That’s sexy. Isn’t it? It’s adorable. And you? Weiss?”
Weiss: “I liked wearing your shirt…”
Jaune: “Why?”
Weiss: “It was comfortable…”
Jaune: “It was huge on you. I thought you might drown in it.”
Weiss: “It’s like you were hugging me.”
Jaune: “If you want a hug I’ll give you a hug. Whenever you want one for as long as you want.”
Weiss: “I want to smell like you. And it’s comfortable. Girl clothes are all uncomfortable. Dresses aren’t comfortable. Yoga pants and bras are tight and uncomfortable. Hoodies are big and comfortable and smell like you. And we like your smell. It’s associated with good memories. Smell is good for memory. What do you want?”
Jaune: “You’re so adorable. Like Ruby is open about it which is cute in it’s own right. But with you I have to pull it out and drag it out like a confession. Is it such a horrible crime to be affectionate and want to wear my clothes?”
Weiss: “You’re teasing me."
Jaune: “All this talk about smell makes you sound like a puppy… Poor little Weiss. Surrounded by people who love her. How will she survive?”
Weiss: “I am not a puppy,”
Jaune: “You’re so adorable. You want to steal my hoodies and sleep in my shirts. Does it make you feel safe too? What am I going to do with you, Weiss?”
Weiss: “I’m warning you…”
Jaune: “I’ll just have to love on you and kiss your forehead and squeeze you tightly. Won’t I?”
Weiss: “Let’s just get him some hoodies and be done with it."
Ruby: *giggles*
Weiss: “And what’s so funny to you? You like wearing his clothes. This was your idea.”
Ruby: “But I admitted it openly.”
Weiss: “I admitted it too!”
Ruby: “So he didn’t have any power over me because I came right out and said it. You were shy and tsundere about it. So you gave him the edge over you. And he’s right. You’re so cute. The way you crave affection and deny it at the same time is adorable. And he and I will do something about it.”
Weiss: “Like what?”
Ruby: “We’ll spitroast you. And shower you with affection.”
Weiss: “If anybody is getting lit at both ends in the bedroom it’s you. You’re the submissive one.”
Ruby: “But I’m open about it. I accept that I like being dominated. You, on the other hand, try and fight it. But you always let him bend you over and pull your hair. You let him push you down and take you. You love it. But you always try and fight it by being dominant at first. You just can’t seem to accept that you like being pushed around and told what to do.”
Jaune: “At least there’s one place where I’m the boss… You girls love telling me what to do.”
Weiss: “Try this on.” *holds out a hoodie to Jaune*
Jaune: “A little like that.”
Ruby: “Don’t be a ninny and put on a show for us, Jaune. Like a model.”
Jaune: “I’m not a model.”
Ruby: “But you could be."
Weiss: “The hair and the eyes. I hope if we have a boy then he has your hair style even if he takes my hair color.”
Jaune: “Are you saying that you like my hair?”
Ruby: “It’s so much fun to play with."
Weiss: “Try this one, too.”
Jaune: “Do you like playing with my hair too, Weiss?”
Weiss: “A little. I like running my hands through it.”
Jaune: “Aw. You didn’t put up any fight that time.”
Weiss: “You want me to?”
Jaune: “It’s adorable when you do. So a little.”
Weiss: “But you also tease me about it?”
Jaune: “As much as I can get away with. Yes.”
Weiss: “Men.”
Jaune: “What other men do you even know and like?”
Weiss: “Oscar.”
Jaune: “He’s just a boy. Don’t rope him in with me. He doesn’t deserve that.”
Weiss: “Quit it, you.”
Ruby: “No more bad mouthing yourself. I forbid it. It’s forbidden now."
Jaune: “But that’s basically all I do.”
Weiss: “Well, you’ll have to stop I guess. Part of the battle against your illness is not having negative thoughts about yourself. Let alone orally communicating them. Let’s try this one."
Jaune: “What am I going to do with all these clothes you guys are making me buy? I’m still just going to wear pretty much my huntsman get-up around.”
Weiss: “No you’re not. You’re going to wear casual clothes on casual days. You can wear your hunting clothes to work and if they ever call your number for missions but on Saturdays and Sundays you will wear casual clothes and you will like it. I like my hunting clothes too. But I also like wearing casual stuff and I want to steal your hoodies and I want them to smell like you so you better be wearing them.”
Ruby: “Come on, Jaune. You don’t want to just see us in our hunting clothes, do you?”
Jaune: “I could look at you in that tight corset all day long.”
Ruby: “Well I don’t want to wear that tight corset all day long. It’s hard on my boobs.”
Jaune: “I’m hard on your boobs.”
Ruby: “Oh, you! Go try on those hoodies.”
Jaune: *changes into one of the hoodies requested* “Well?”
Weiss: “It looks good…”
Ruby: “Looks comfy. Is it?”
Jaune: “It’s comfortable. I’d still be more comfortable in one of my tunics.”
Weiss: “Lounging around the house and wearing a hoodie won’t kill you. You enormous baby. Try on the blue one. I think it will match your eyes and make them pop.”
Jaune: *steps back into the changing room and tries on the blue hoodie. Steps out again.*
Ruby: “Who said hoodies can’t be hot.”
Weiss: “The clothes make the man.”
Jaune: “Pretty sure that if I’m hot I’d be hot without the hoodie.”
Weiss: “What do you mean ‘if you’re hot?’”
Jaune: “If I am hot.”
Ruby: “You’re hot.”
Jaune: "Yeah maybe but I can’t be like ‘I’m hot.’”
Weiss: “‘Maybe’ he says. Like pulling teeth.”
Ruby: “Why can’t you say that you’re hot?”
Jaune: “Uh, because I might not be.”
Ruby: “But you are. You’re hot. Can I say that I’m hot?”
Jaune: “Of course. You’re smoking.”
Ruby: “You’re smoking! You can say you’re hot.”
Jaune: “Can’t do it.”
Weiss: “Jaune you’re more than conventionally attractive. It’s not just your personality that attracted us to you. You’re hot.”
Jaune: “Maybe…”
Weiss: “What do you mean ‘maybe?’”
Jaune: "Maybe you think that but not everyone would?”
Weiss: “Most people would say that you’re attractive!”
Ruby: “He’s just not getting it.”
Weiss: “I know. I know. It’s my fault.”
Ruby: “How?”
Weiss: “He has low self esteem still because I rejected him back at Beacon.”
Ruby: “You can’t blame yourself for that! My gods, you both would blame yourselves for the moon if you could.”
Weiss: “I don’t know about that. He was young and I rejected him and he got this idea that he isn’t good looking. And he is.”
Ruby: “Nope. Not your fault. Jaune is Jaune. I don’t want to hear you blaming yourself for Jaune's poor self esteem. There were a lot of factors that went into this.”
Weiss: “But-”
Ruby: “Nope! Go try on the striped hoodie, Jaune.”
Jaune: *walks back into the changing room and tries it on* "So?”
Weiss: “Yeah. I like it.”
Ruby: “Me too. I think I like this one the most. DIbs on this hoodie.”
Jaune: “I haven’t even worn it for five minutes."
Weiss: “He could be a model for it. Put that in a poster and ship it. It would sell like hotcakes.”
Jaune: “What am I trying on next?”
Weiss: “Some shirts and jeans and sweatpants. A full wardrob."
Jaune: “Do I really need all that?”
Weiss: “Why not? Where are you going?”
Ruby: “Move in with us to stay. You don’t need to live light anymore. You can relax and unwind. I know it’s hard. You're coiled up like a spring ready to fly at any time but you don’t need to with us.”
Jaune: "Sure. Fine."

Are You Sure About Her?
Pyrrha: *meeting Arc family for the first time, happily chatting away*
Mama Arc: Jaune, dear, can you come help me with something please?
Jaune: Hm? Sure, mom!
Jaune: *follows his mother to the kitchen* What do you need?
Mama Arc: …
Mama Arc: …Jaune, dear, are you really sure about this girl?
Jaune: …what? Of course I am! Pyrrha’s awesome! Why would you even ask?
Mama Arc: She seems nice, but…well…she’s a celebrity.
Jaune: Uh…yeah? Basically everyone but me already knew her when we started at school.
Mama Arc: *folds her arms* You don’t understand, sweetie. A few years back, a star athlete and a boy at her school hooked up, and because of her celebrity status they kept their relationship secret to protect him.
Mama Arc: Things went on like that until she unexpectedly got pregnant. They kept the child secret too, again, to protect them.
Mama Arc: But as time went on and the press celebrated her return to sports, she spent less and less time visiting that boy and her child. She was always out drinking, competing, and socializing, and eventually, things completely fell apart. That poor boy gave up his dreams for someone who left when she got tired of him.
Mama Arc: …And I don’t want to see that happen to my son!
Jaune: …
Jaune: …mom, I’m sorry you’re worried, but you’re wrong about Pyrrha.
Mama Arc: But how can you be sure? You’re both so young!
Jaune: Well…For one thing, everyone already knows that me and Pyrrha are dating! When she came to Beacon she told me she wanted to make real friends, and now we’ve both got lots of awesome people who know us both. We even go on double dates with our teammates!
Jaune: And…I guess the most important thing is that it’s Pyrrha, and I trust her.
Mama Arc: 🤨
Jaune: *quailing under the “Mom Stare.”* I-I mean it! When I first went to Beacon, nobody believed in me! Even you and dad talked like you expected me to fail and come back home any day and become a farmer!
Jaune: But not Pyrrha!
Jaune: *awkwardly rubs the back of his neck, trying to form the words* She…she came and pulled my sorry butt out of a tree during the initiation, when she could’ve left me behind and done the actual test! A-and then when trained fighters were teaming up all around us, she came and picked ME to be her partner!
Mama Arc: Well, that’s-
Jaune: *interrupting, Defend Partner™️ mode engaged* And after I made it through by the skin of my teeth and started acting like a cringy tough-guy jerk, she stuck by me! And once I realized what an idiot I was being, she offered to train me.
Jaune: Do you understand? Pyrrha Nikos, Mistral’s invincible gladiator, after everything I did wrong and how crappy I acted, believed I could be better! She believed in me when nobody else did!
Jaune: Pyrrha’s an absolute angel, mom. She’s the strongest and smartest person in the whole school! I watched her take on an entire team by herself and win without breaking a sweat!
Jaune: She could’ve done anything she wanted. She still CAN do anything she wants! And she-she believes in ME!
Jaune: And I believe in her! She’s the most caring, kind, and wonderful person I’ve ever met, mom. I know she would NEVER hurt me, and I trust her with my whole heart!
Mama Arc: …
Jaune: *leans against the counter, panting a bit*
Mama Arc: …it sounds like you really love this girl, Jaune.
Jaune: *drained from his passionate speech* I think so, mom. I know it sounds kinda dumb, but everything I do is more awesome when she’s around!
Mama Arc:
Mama Arc: *smiles and ruffles Jaune’s hair* My little boy has sure grown up a lot since he ran off to become a hero.
Jaune: *squirms* I guess, but it’s all because of the friends I made…but mostly Pyrrha!
Mama Arc: *smiles over Jaune’s shoulder*
Jaune: …what? *turns around*
Pyrrha: *standing in the doorway, sniffling and covering her mouth* 🥹
Arc Family: *crowded in behind Pyrrha* 😁
Jaune: …
Jaune: …how long-?
Youngest Arc Sister: Since the first word you big sappy dork!

9 days of Lancaster Day 5: Hidden Relationship
Ruby:*washing plates*
Jaune:*dirty* Hey there stranger. Hard at work I see.
Ruby:I lost a bet with Nora and this is my punishment. What’s with the smudges?
Jaune:Yang wanted to help me “improve my combat abilities.”
Ruby:Ooof, I’m sorry.
Jaune:I’m not immediately sore like last time so that’s something.
Ruby grabs a glass and fills it with water for him.
Jaune:Awww, my heart. *grabs it*
Ruby:Hush you goober. I know Yang’s training all too well. I’m surprised you’re walking.
Jaune:Well y’know, recently I’ve been getting in good stamina training.
Ruby:*red*…Is that so? Hadn’t noticed. My training is always pretty vigorous.
Jaune:Oh I’ve noticed. Guess I still have a long way to go. Although…I’m sure you’d have a little more trouble with my “training”
Ruby:Pfft, oh really? I think I’m pretty fit in case you haven’t noticed!
Jaune:Oh I’ve noticed.
Ruby:…..*flicks water on him*
Jaune:Ah!
Ruby:I couldn’t think of a comeback. You’re filthy anyways. I’m just washing you up a bit.
Jaune:If that’s the case…I think there’s a smudge around my chin I can’t quite get off.
Ruby didn’t know if it was herself, Nora, or Yang that has influenced Jaune, but it was a diabolical blessing. The young knight approached her innocently with a smile. Ruby double checked their surroundings then preceded to gently rub her thumb across his chin. Of course, Jaune took the opportunity to pull her in by her lower back. Ruby gladly became ensnared in his trap, going as far to stand up on her toes and give a sweet, mischievous kiss.
The two of them giggled as they continued peppered each other with growing affection. If only more of these moments could come by frequently. Unfortunately, privacy is hard in a group of nine, and the both of them wished to revel in this growing relationship away from others. Not forever of course, but long enough to make it feel personal and intimate. Although if the others knew, they’d probably tell them intimacy is far from a problem.
Ruby felt her body hold him closer as their kiss became…less innocent. Jaune was seconds away from putting her on the countertop when the click of a doorknob snapped them back to reality. An instant petal burst brought Ruby back to washing dishes while Jaune focused on his water as Yang walked in.
Yang:Hey party people! Ruby, you should’ve seen Jaune during our match. Gotta admit, he’s getting some moves. Almost pinned me a few times.
Ruby:Wow, that’s high praise. Practice must be paying off.
Jaune:*refilling water*
Yang:Someone’s thirsty.
Ruby:Pfft, I’ll say. He’s all red too.
Jaune:W-What can I say? Things got pretty heated, literally.
Ruby:Please don’t singe him. We can’t explain that to Nora.
Yang:He will be fine. All he needs is a little rest and a well deserved bath. Also isn’t Nora supposed to be on dish duty?
Ruby:I lost a bet, which sucks because I wanted to look around Mistral a bit.
Yang:I’ll take over for ya. You suck at drying anyways.
Ruby:Hey!
Yang:I’m gonna put my things away first. Jaune, hit the showers. You smell like smoke. *walks off*
Jaune:Gee, I wonder why!
He waves goodbye at Ruby and heads to the bathroom. Honestly it was a miracle he didn’t singe anything. As he walked in a closed the door, a sudden gust went by him. Jaune turned around and was greeted with a swift hand over his mouth from Ruby while the other quickly locked the door behind him. She slowly moved her hand and smiled.
Ruby: I lied about Mistral
Jaune: You are gonna get me killed.
Ruby tried not to laugh. She ran the sink and turned on the bath for more noise.
Ruby:Gotta make opportunities where you can. Besides…*red* You got me a little riled up.
Jaune:I mean…fair but- my life.
Ruby:You’ll be fine. I’ll sneak out after I learn about this so called “training” so let’s just focus on us. I can also help you wash up, like any good partner would do. Unless… you don’t want to?
She didn’t even let him respond before taking off her cap and sitting on the sink counter with a wide grin. Ruby held her arms out, inviting him. Despite his protests, Jaune easily walked into the embrace and found his hands back where they were before they were interrupted.
Jaune:Prepare for your workout.
Ruby:Hehe, lead on. I’m happily in your care~

???: You must unite humanity, these relics will be of help.
????: But why me!? Why not anyone else!
???: Your wife was the cause of this suffering and you were the catalyst. By saving her you doomed humanity.
????: But Gods! Please! Have mercy on me! And if not me please make her mortal again!
???: it is her punishment. And you were chosen to bear her pain. Now go, and when the time comes, you know what you'll have to do.
___
Jaune: *shaking his head*
Ruby: Jaune? Are you sure you are ok?
Jaune: Yeah, just had a weird dream. So yeah, you said your uncle wanted to see me?
Ruby: *uncertain* Y-yeah... Though he isn't... In the best condition to see you right now.
Jaune: *eyes flashing for just a moment, fast enough for ruby to miss it* Let me guess, he got himself drunk and couldn't come?
Ruby: *surprised* H-how did you know? You only saw him once!
Jaune:... Uh... I'll be honest Ruby, i have no idea how. I just had a feeling, you know? I guess he has the vibe of a drunkard?
Ruby: ... I adore him, but fair.
Jaune: I heard about Yang, is she...
Ruby: She woke up not long before you did. She... Isn't taking it well.
Jaune: And what about Blake?
Ruby: ...
Jaune: Ruby?
Ruby: She left... Not even saying goodbye.
Jaune: oh...
Ruby: ... Jaune? Am i... A bad leader?
Jaune: ... No. I don't think you are a bad leader.
Ruby: *water building up in her eyes* But... I screwed up. I couldn't protect anyone!
Jaune: *snapping his fingers to get her attention* Hey, hey! You saved civilians! You stopped the sabotage! Hell, you might have saved more people than anyone else!
Ruby: But i couldn't help my sister! I let Blake run away! Weiss got taken away by her father and... Penny is... *Crying* i couldn't save any of my friends!
Jaune: *sigh* I... Can't even begin to understand your pain Ruby. I was lucky. Had Pyrrha managed to push me in the locker she would have died. If i didn't collapse both of you might have tried fighting Cinder and... God i don't want to think about that. *Eye flashing* It would have been Summer all over again...
Ruby: *still crying* What... Am i supposed to do?I want an answer but i don't know where to search them...
???: *whisper in Jaune's head* Mistral... Lionheart...
Jaune: ? ... Wait, weren't they from Mistral?
Ruby: *crying less* Y-yeah... Wait, you think...
Jaune: Maybe. Though i refuse to let you go there alone... I will ask my team if they would like to follow us.
Ruby: *wipe away her tears* You... You'd help me?
Jaune: *smiling at her while patting her head* Hey, we are friends, right?
Ruby: *hugs* Thanks... Really, you are the best friend i could ever ask for...

Random RWBY Part Possibly 26: Bumbleby Edition
I don’t know what part it is but anyway headcanon and idea time with a focus on Bumbleby
Soon after all the chaos I believe they do get married.
It’s not the largest ceremony in Remnant, but it’s packed full of people. Saving the world tends to have you make a lot of friends.
It was all out war over who got Weiss and who got Ruby but ultimately this was fixed by Weiss instead offering to marry them and Yang could keep Ruby, Blake could have Ilia as her maid of honor.
They divide the rest of their friends straight down the middle, with random exceptions like Sun having to be on Blake’s and Yang dragging Nora to her side.
Ghira and Tai are crying so much it’s making them look stupid, Kali is also crying but she has the dignity to look respectable doing it. Qrow’s crying too but he can turn into a bird to pretend he’s not.
Raven is… She’s already missed so much of Yang’s life, when she gets her invite she’s happy. She wasn’t there for most big things; but she’s grateful to be there for this one. Kali also threatens to kill her if she doesn’t show up.
Three empty chairs up front: for Pyrrha, Penny and Summer.
Both genders are involved in the bouquet tossing. Weiss catches one of the bouquets and it terrifies her. Jaune catches the other one. Jokes will be made about that for the next twenty years.
Weiss was high-key in their business for planning. She was honestly more interested in their wedding than they were.
They could not decide where to honeymoon considering they’d already seen the entire world, they genuinely consider finding a way back to the Ever After before finally settling on Mistral.

i feel like what rwby is really missing out on in regards to ruby's message to the world is that it didn't really matter that the message was from ruby; that during her travels she didn't meet and help people—like even just one would do—who would see her message and be inspired to help in turn, because that's that girl who chose to help them for no other reason that she could.
to give few examples, i'm going to use known characters imagined in different roles:
think of pyrrha, a rising star in tournament fighting whose life is controlled by managers and sponsors, who wants more from her life, who wants to actually be a huntress and help people, but can't because fighting grimm is considered "too risky" for her career—and then, by happenstance, she meets ruby, who's on her way to deal with some small grimm problem, giving pyrrha the opportunity to sneak out and join her. and she does, gets a taste of a life she wants but seemingly can't have; it's not enough for her to make a change immediately, but it's a spark, one that becomes a flame once the message from ruby is out and pyrrha heads out to vacuo, her management and sponsors be damned.
or think of nora and ren, two orphans living in a small town under a tutelage of a huntsman... who, by the time ruby arrives, has gone missing after tracking a pack of grimm. they all know what that likely means, and ruby agrees to help them in whatever way she can, to get closure, tracking the grimm (taking it as potential practice for her silver eyes, too) and protecting the town until the threat has been dealt with, alongside nora & ren. and then she's off again, towards mistral, but she's made a difference and once her message is live, nora and ren answer the call.
like. . . it works as it is now, i guess, but it lacks that personal touch; that for some of the people who answered the call, it mattered that it was ruby making it, that it was her who inspired them to go on their own journey away from home.
one small kindness in one small moment, or something like that.
#i hope this makes sense#been thinking about this a lot lately#cos i've had this nagging feeling in the back of my mind#ever since that scene#and all the characters shown during it#and it's like. . .#where are the lives of strangers changed#where's the impact?#bc idk it's. not really there atm

You know what? I'm gonna say something that'll probably sound controversial but it's something I honestly Believe.
Black Sun would've been greater pandering than Bumbleby.
This isn't to say that Black sun is bad, I think Black Sun it makes sense and is a good ship, and I fucking love it, but I ship weird shit anyways.
I'm also not going to repeat how and why the Bees make sense, people more eloquent and patient than I have, and I don't want to waste my time mimicking them.
I will, however, say this.
Blake shared a Room with Yang for the entire time they were at Beacon, so about a semester, ~15 weeks, or 3-4 months before Blake met Sun.
Even assuming Blake spent every hour she could with Sun outside of school, she'd spend a majority of her time with her team, including Yang.
This would give her at least equal time between these blonds.
Then the fall happens, and she spends, let's say, three or four months with Sun in Menagerie and on the ship, before meeting back up with her team, thus giving Sun and Yang ample and equal time together.
Blake then spends time with her team, and Yang, going from Mistral to Atlas, and all the time then spend in Atlas.
So for CRWBY to have made Black Sun canon would've severely changed Canon, I believe for, the worse, even if the Bees didn't happen, because that would mean either we'd need to bring SSSN onto the main group, or Sun would have needed to not grow as a character from being with Blake for those months, or the relationship would've been a mute point because Sun returns to his team at the start of volume six.
This is not Anti-Black sun. I am a dirty, filthy multishipper, capable of seeing the aspects of nearly every ship on this fandom.
But I do think Canon RWBY would've been worse off with Black Sun.

Just saw the extended animatic that was originally meant to end V9 and is now gonna get repurposed into the (possible) V10.
Let me just say, I still feel the same about the things I saw in the first animatic. I can now firmly say that Qrow has been replaced with a doppleganger same as Blake (I wonder if it's like a partial possession thing in this case where sometimes it's Qrow and sometimes it's the faker.) I hate the dumb Winter scenes about how disappointed she is that poor people aren't nice enough to her billionaire blue blooded mother in her silly little sunhat. I have no idea what the hell Raven is doing there. The 'Remember Her Message' thing is stupid because of how poorly done Ruby's message to the world actually was and what little impact Team RWBYJNOR has actually had on the world at large. And I still want to see Whitley without Willow for three point five seconds. And I'm still wondering why the presence of an army in Atlas was a sign of pure evil and was immediately seen as a horrifying threat but seeing an army in Vacuo is meant to be a sign of peace and hope.
But also, now I have more to say.
Like first of all, I'm even more confused on how Remnant managed to pull off any sort of army now that we know what remained in Vale after the Fall of Beacon got decimated. Where are they getting their army? From Mistral, where we know Leo had all the Hunters killed? Are we meant to assume that the people that showed up from Mistral are the cops Blake called on the White Fang? Or, maybe from Argus, even though we're meant to hate Cordovin and the Atlas military that was there? Second of all, this makes me even more annoyed at Winter for being like 'if my poor martyr sister could see how badly we're doing, she'd be disappointed,' Winter get realistic goals challenge 2024. Third of all, Team SSSN and CFVY made appearances and if I ever have to see Coco "based on a nazi" Adel ever again, it'll be too soon, but I still insist that it should've been just Sun, Neptune, and Velvet because none of their other teammates got enough focus in the actual show to be real characters. They could've been casually name dropped off-handedly and it would've been fine. Speaking of teams making reappearances, Neon is there, which means she didn't die in the Fall of Atlas and likely her teammates didn't either, but they had better have a full explanation in V10 for how soldiers on the field got back to the city and threw the portals, and it's weird that we saw Neon but not Flynt. Also can I just point out that "the people who were colonized by Atlas are being aggressive to innocent Atlas orphans and need to be told off" is a writing choice the writers didn't have to do, and considering all the whole history with RWBY and bigotry, I don't know why they did that. Neon and Nora had a moment though, and I was like... Ship material? Also, Tyrian and Mercury are working with the Crown, but... To be honest, if they don't scrap that in V10 (if V10 ever comes,) I'm gonna question their decision making even more, because they just did a new location with a new villain and it proved that this late in the game it's hard to set up or properly execute new threats, and if V10 ever comes out, it's a high probability that we're not ever getting a V11. So if you ask me, if they don't cut out the Crown, they're either gonna badly execute these new bads because they expect their fans to do homework to understand the main show, or they're gonna spend way too much focus on establishing them and the Mains will get sidelined again. Merc looks like a mess, though, and this would make me think a redemption arc is a-coming except that they're pressed for time like I said, so I'm not counting on it. The fact that I have to see Peter Port of all characters is also making me want to say a lot of bad words. Like I cannot emphasize enough how much I hated seeing him and his stupid face and how much I wish he'd never existed. What is this choice to not have the serious potential mentor character who had been part of Oz's inner circle come in and instead having the comic relief teacher who blathered about testosterone and flirted with an underage student be the one to break what should be devastating news that should by all rights get a lot of focus? And where the heck is Tai in all of this? Rip to Oobleck, but out of everyone from the Vale seasons, I would not have picked either of these men to bring back, I'd have brought in Tai and Glynda. It's just a bad choice. And still no sign of Maria and Pietro, so like... What the heck?
All in all, I thought before that I couldn't have less hope for the future of RWBY, but whoa buddy this extended animatic proved me wrong.

A Most Unusual Unit
Good morning, or rather, good evening, "Nightshade". Excellent work on your last assignment. Thanks your efforts, the councilman has lived to see another day, much to the great benefit of Vale. Unfortunately, I'm afraid I have another assignment for you already. Your new target is the leader of the Spiders organization, "Little Miss" Charlotte Malachite. She is a grave threat to peace between Vale and Mistral. Your mission is to get close to her and gain any information that may be related to seditious activities.
In order to do this, you will have to marry and have a child.
Blake: (Spits out her coffee, Coughs) EXCUSE ME?!
Little Miss is a reclusive woman and is notably suspicious of others. At this point, she operates almost entirely behind the scenes. Her only public appearances of late have been her attendance at the elite private school her daughters attend. These events act as informal get-togethers for the upper crust of society and the lowest of low in the criminal underworld. You are to enroll your child at this school and gain entry to these events. However, admission deadlines are approaching fast. YOU'VE ONLY GOT ONE WEEK.
Blake: (Rips encoded-cypher paper in half) THEY EXPECT ME TO HAVE A CHILD IN SEVEN DAYS?! (People stare at her, Ahem!) Excuse me...
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Blake: Listen up, little girl.
Penny: I'm Penny!
Blake: Listen up, Penny. From now on, you are my child. As far as everyone knows, however, you have always been my child. Understood?
Penny: Understood!
Blake: You will address me as "Mother," as the elites do.
Penny: Mama!
Blake: Very well.
Old Woman: What an adorable girl~.
Blake: Thank you. We're the Belladinas. We just moved in.
Penny: I'm Penny, and I have always been Mama's child!
Old Woman: Huh?
Blake: (Thinking) You don't need to say that!.
Penny: Mama, I want a silenced pistol~!
Blake: If we see one on sale.
Old Woman: What a strange family...
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Jaune: (Answers phone) Hello, Arc residence.
Jaune: Oh, Saph!
Saphron: (Via phone) How are you doing, baby bro?.
Jaune: Good. Everything's good. I'm still hard at work in Vale!
Saphron: Still as weird as ever. Don't make me worry about you.
Jaune: You don't have to sound so mean about it! And I am not weird!
Saphron: Jaune, when are you going to get married? You find a good lady friend yet?
Jaune: (Thinking) Not this again...
Saphron: Listen, I might be offered a big promotion here soon, but that'd mean I'd be too busy to look after you. I'm not gonna say no right off the bat, but it doesn't feel right for me to abandon you in the big city. Like I always tell ya, I'm forever grateful for you taking care of me all this time, and that's why I want to make sure you're happy.
Jaune: I know, Saph. Thank you.
Saphron: I think I know some cuties out here in Argus. Maybe I could put in a good word for you?
Jaune: Ah! N-No! You don't need to do that! A-Actually, I'm heading to a party this weekend... and I'll be bringing someone!
Saphron: A girl?!
Jaune: Uh, y-yeah, I guess that's one way to describe her. So don't worry about me, okay?
Saphron: Alright. So, who's throwing this party? One of your co-workers?
Jaune: Mm-hm!
Saphron: Great! I'll have Pyrrha give me the full details on this girlfriend of yours!
Jaune: Eh?
Saphron: No offense, Jaune, but you can be pretty naive. I just want to make sure the girl you're digging isn't just digging into you, right?
Jaune: Uh, well-
Saphron: And I'm gonna hold off on this promotion until I know you're happy!
Jaune: Y-You don't need to-
Saphron: Can't wait to hear all about her, baby bro! Ciao~! (Click)
Jaune: (Hangs up, Pacing) What do I do?!. What do I do?!. I need to find a girlfriend now!. If Saph finds out I lied, she'll think there's something wrong with me!. Then she'll never get that promotion, and Terra'll be mad at me!. Adrian will never play with me again!.
Jaune: (Phone rings, Answers) Saph, listen! About what I said earlier, I was just joking! I-
Boss: (Via phone) Having family trouble?. That's unusual for you.
Jaune: Oh! Headmistress! I'm so sorry, I was-
Boss: Good evening. I have a client for you, Rusted Knight.
Jaune: (Eyes dim)
Boss: The Glass Unicorn. Room 1220.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Jaune: Excuse me.
Proprietor: Oh, hello again, Jaune! How can I help you?
Jaune: I'm going to a party tonight, so I need my slacks patched up ASAP. Er, if that's okay, of course.
Blake: (Flinches, Thinking) How did he get by without me noticing?!. Jaune... Hm... Right. Jaune Arc, 26 years old, never married, and never divorced. Parents deceased. Seven sisters, six dexeased, one surviving, couple years older. They're both ordinary civilians with nothing on their files. Maybe I'm getting sloppy-
Jaune: Um, miss? You've been staring at me since I came in here. Is there something I can help you with?
Blake: He sensed me watching him?!. How?!.
Blake: Oh, uh, no. I just thought... you were really cute. Excuse me for being rude.
Jaune: Wait, so... I'm good looking to you?
Blake: Um, yes?
Jaune: Miss-
Penny: Mama! I got measured! Huh? Who's she?
Blake: He's another customer, like us.
Jaune: (Thinking) I almost asked another man's wife on a date! I've heard stories of men being murdered for things like that. BUT THIS TIME, I'D BE THE ONE TO DO THE KILLING.
Penny: !
Jaune: No! I can't even fantasize about a thing so horrible! It's thoughts like those that'll expose me as an ASSASSIN.
Penny: (Thinking) A- A- A- A- ASSASSIN?!.
Blake: (Spy)
Jaune: (Assassin)
Penny: (Telepath, Starved for entertainment) SOOO COOOOL!.
Blake: I thought he'd make for a good fit for the husband role, but his intuition could threaten my mission.
Jaune: I thought she'd be able to pull off the girlfriend role, but I can't afford any kind of unnecessary bloodshed.
Penny: (Looks down, Covering her face) Oh, boo hoo hoo! I am so sad about Papa!
Blake: P-Penny?! What are you-?!
Penny: I just miss my papa so very, very, very much! If only he could see me in my pretty dress!
Jaune: Oh, is your husband away?
Blake: Ah... You see... My husband actually passed a few years ago. I've been working hard to support my daughter as a single mother.
Jaune: Then... Then no one could try to kill me if I asked her!.
Jaune: Um, excuse me...
is there anything about rwby that you would have done differently as a writer? i.e. introducing certain ideas of characters earlier, complete wholesale changes, etc.
in terms of major narrative choices, adam attempts to assassinate sienna as in canon but her personal guard remains loyal, there’s a scuffle, and she’s able to escape wounded but alive, showing up at haven to pincer adam’s forces with the faction of the white fang that refuses to go along with his coup.
the albains are loyal to sienna but still weird and disliked – not for sinister foreshadowing but because sometimes people are just sort of weird and off-putting, and that’s a fun trait to give a couple of good guys who show the fuck up to defend an ally who’s hitherto been a bit distrustful and cool toward them when the violent splinter group tries to assassinate him; narratively the albains being like this while aligning themselves firmly with sienna also provides an opportunity to cast the belladonna’s alliance with and support of sienna into sharper focus and perhaps allows for blake to bounce off and talk to some guys in the “yes direct action and tactical violence, no whatever the fuck adam’s doing” camp to refine her understanding of the white fang and make it clearer how adam corrupted what sienna does and believes.
and the arc resolution is sienna reclaiming leadership of the white fang and preparing to clean house while ghira and ilia plan a second, separate but allied organization focused on advocacy with the overall point being that expecting one group to do and be everything is part of the problem.
i talk about this more here. the white fang arc really isn’t as bad as its frequently maligned but suffers from a lack of clarity in how it’s intended message is delivered; the point of sienna surviving and having genuine allies to represent her side in menagerie is to address that lack of clarity by articulating her philosophy and underscoring that the belladonnas support her and ally themselves with her because the objection isn’t “violence in bad” but rather “indiscriminate violence that materially harms the cause and violent infighting are bad.”
aside from that, i wouldn’t change anything significant presuming that i had to work under the same conditions as the actual writers (<- if they hadn’t lost those two episodes in v9, 9.10 wouldn’t feel so rushed and we’d have got that animatic as a full episode; if there hadn’t been budget issues in v5 mistral wouldn’t feel so empty; etc it’s very easy to fix problems like this in hypotheticals where you imagine you have infinite time and money, but in the real world if this were my story and i faced these sort of logistical challenges it would be to the detriment of the narrative in the same ways and i have no interest in pretending otherwise).
all that said
if i were the one writing this story and either i had more money or it was, like, a series of novels (<- which is what i’d be writing, realistically) – the religious layer of the story would be a lot more overt, not just in terms of the religious conflict with regard to the brothers but i would flesh out 1-2 other religions too. blake’s arc would feature wrestling with complicated feelings about god-of-animals-worship. ruby and yang would’ve been raised monotheistic light-worshippers; weiss would be a lapsed orthodox brother-cultist (in my head this is comparable to, say, the chasm between evangelical protestants and a lapsed catholic). oscar would be stolidly practicing some other religion that has nothing to do with the brothers, to ozma’s consternation, because that’s funny. salem would be still a polytheist but pointedly not worshipping Those Two, because that’s also funny.
<- this is not to “”fix“” anything i just think it’s important as a writer to be self-indulgent. and i like fantasy religions. bfrgscbk
Jaune: hey Ruby, What are you up to?
Ruby: ... Nothing I guess. I'm just. Tired.
Jaune: Well if you need a nap, the couch is open I could grab you a blanket.
Ruby: Not tired like that, I mean ... I get it, Jaune.
Jaune: What do you mean?
Ruby: Feeling the world on your shoulders? Like everything bad that happened to your friends is because of you? I get it now. It's exhausting and I just wanna sleep until ... well. You know.
Jaune: ... Is that how I sound whenever you and Weiss check up on me?
Ruby: I mean yeah. The real world is hard. Salem is hard. It's important to remember that our enemies are also just making it up as they go along and that thought is comforting.
Jaune: I'm not good at this... Look Rubes. You've been my moral compass. I look to you awfully fast when I'm not sure what to do. You inspire me. But you also haunt me like an evil spectre from the end of time.
Ruby: You've done stuff you aren't proud of?
Jaune: The drugs. The murder. The mayhem. I have power behind me now and I've done something terrible with it when no one was able to stop me.
Ruby: You used to come back to the Mistrali hideout soaked in blood all the time.
Jaune: Yeah. I killed three people that day in Mistral. Just idiots looking for a fight and acting tougher than they were. I cut them in half over it. I kinda hoped they would win. Or I wished someone would come and save them the way Pyrrha saved me. But she didn't. Couldn't. I just had that feeling.
Ruby: I haven't killed anyone yet. Seems inevitable. If I had some speed behind me and swung brutally.
Jaune: Some poor sap without aura and bam. Even with aura you can't exactly tell how full they are.
Ruby: Aren't we chipper.
Jaune: Just pragmatic. I love you Ruby. Ask me to kill for you. Ask me to die for you. I would hound your enemies to the remnants of this world. I'm not strong enough to see the way on my own. Guide me. Let me be your tool.
Ruby: I don't want that kind of responsibility. I want to be a normal girl doing normal girl things.
Jaune: Sorry but you are special. You have the attention of men and gods.
