went to build a bear yesterday. Was doing the heart ritual thing, and was told to make a wish. I closed my eyes and just said “I just really hope I’m not chronically ill” and the poor employee, who probably wasn’t much older than me, kinda just looked at me. I’m not sure what the ramifications of putting a wish that may never come true on a build a bear are, but the moral of the story is that I now have two very nice smelling Axolotls

please no one get mad about this maybe i don't know what i'm talking about but

a lot of 'feminine' ways of presenting are about doing extra. say what you will about consumerism. make up, fancy clothes (lots of clothes), long hair, long dresses, painted nails, all of it

and as a sort of maybe kinda transmasc person it feels like what i am doing to try and present more butch is reducing - don't wear make up or jewellery or even slightly pretty clothes because then i'll just look like a girl. i don't like make up anyways, but on the occasion i put on eyeliner for dramatic effect... it just looks like girl make up. i extend it into gender neutral gothic spikes and then i am too embarrassed to leave my room, and wipe it off. i buy a ring with a snake on it which is cool but it is delicate and golden. this would be very cool on a guy. on me, not as such. i cut my hair every couple months because it starts looking the generic afab non-binary haircut and it is too pretty. it is too feminine. on a guy it would be perfectly normal. but i do not look like a guy.

Do you think Alcibiades actually had that high of a libido or was he like "sex can be exchanged for love and affection"

I think it was primarily hedonism along with the feasts, the fancy clothing, the race horses etc, and i think hedonism can come with the struggles he had with the attachments to the material world (in plato).

I'm reading that book about Alcibiades and athens now and it's a little difficult because it's so full of information and theory that I have to read very slowly to understand, but basically his excessiveness is seen as a character trait. He's not different from others because he's got something different, but because he has everything in excess, including emotions and needs. Huge ego, huge ambitions, lust, anger etc.

(That character trait can be explained by where and when he was raised but that's another discussion)

And he did need a lot of attention from people, from childhood to adulthood, but I don't think we know enough about his interpersonal relationships and his thoughts to say if affection was what he was looking for in sex specifically. I think you'd need to talk to him directly or observe his actual behavior to understand stuff like that.

It can certainly be entertained that he was trying to exchange sex for affection and love, and a valid motivator if we want to use him as a character, i just think we can't know for sure about the real guy, what his exact emotional needs were and how those manifested.

But also with the way Athenians went about sex, he must've thought of it as currency in general. In the symposium, sex is the currency he wants to exchange for wisdom and becoming a better person, because you'd have those relationships where you offered your youth and beauty and sex related things to someone who could offer you knowledge and guidance as you entered public life in return.
