sometimes it can be weird to talk about my interests irl because people think I'm pretentious and I don't how to explain I love garbage actually, it's just OLD garbage
#thoughts#life stuff I guess#what I get for liking classic films#classic literature#films#like some things like Theodora Goes Wild are not that different from 90s romcoms!#I just like them better cause most of them had more creative ways to keep a couple apart than 'one of them is dating someone else'#or like eliza haywood? Don't get wrong she was doing stuff#but it was also the 18th century equivalent of like... colleen hoover (wildly popular romance)#but just saying 'oh yeah I'm into golden age hollywood and eighteenth century literature' makes it sound like I'm sipping tea#looking down on modern things#and like... I am usually sipping tea#but I like some modern things too! I just don't have the same academic interest in discussing them (usually)

i think some of the popularity that meta horror has garnered is a little bit disingenuous tbqh even though i do like some of the movies that have come out of the subgenre, people don’t realize that the foundation of the slasher genre was established in the 60s/70s and a lot of the 80s movies that have become so classic were already riffing off of the tropes established by those movies before full fledged meta took off. the idea to make friday the 13th was sparked by the commercial success of halloween. the original script for slumber party massacre was a parody of the genre and the movie retains much of that humor which is referential to past slashers by nature. + it intentionally uses typical slasher tropes around gender and sexuality to bring forward the concerns of teenage girls. is that not something that meta horror is frequently touted as doing? child’s play is like a slasher, “except —” which is what a lot of meta horror comedies do now (“slasher except it’s a possessed doll” is not that far off from “slasher except it’s freaky friday” and whatnot). this isn’t to say that scream isn’t foundational to what the slasher genre evolved into or that contemporary meta slashers aren’t doing something interesting but i also think they tend to lean towards cynicism towards the movies they’re deriving their themes from + they’re not even as different as they think they are from “classic” 80s movies that already are borrowing from classic slashers which in turn borrowed from even older horror (for example, in halloween, laurie is watching the thing from another world from the 50s which was adapted into the now classic john carpenter’s the thing in the 80s). and of course many of these older horror movies were adapted from literature which also inspired more literature. like the shelley/byron/polidori scary story writing contest is now legendary but also you don’t get the shining without the haunting of hill house (and you don’t get the haunting of hill house without turn of the screw, for example) and the shining is probably one of the most referenced movies by other media of all time. horror has always been an intertextual genre let’s stop pretending it didn’t become “self aware” until 1996
#+ scream used a framework for examining slasher tropes outlined in men women and chainsaws in 1992#bringing the term ‘final girl’ + the ‘rules’ of slasher movies into pop culture#so not only is it working from the canon of slasher movies that already exists#but it also is looking at this academic text that establishes a credible film + gender studies lens for the slasher genre#omg not to mention what the author has to say about slasher-adjacent movies that are critically acclaimed#— movies that use a slasher framework for the plot that address similar themes#but distance themselves by making the violence + resolution of conflict less direct#(i.e. moving the conflict from the physical to the psychological) for example silence of the lambs is one movie she cites#making similar themes + similar conflicts more palatable to a wider audience#which is like the opposite response of meta slasher to the classic slasher canon#i guess if you want to make a slasher movie that isn’t really a slasher movie you have two options — lean into it or lean away from it lol#anyway all this is to say. idk whatever i’m bored + too depressed to get up and do anything productive rn#anyway. count how many times i say ‘for example’ in this post

"Battle of Alberta, right? It was my first game: Calgary, Edmonton. We would play them in the preseason, and you know—trying to make the team I'd always be asking him to fight in preseason, always. I'd be runnin' my mouth—like, tryna fight the biggest, baddest guys, tryna make an impression.
And he would never fight me. He'd always tell me, like If you make the team, I'll fight ya. You don't have to worry about that, but I'm not fightin' ya preseason. And I totally respect it, I'm not gonna chase him down. It is what it is. He's established—I'm looking for my chance.
So I get called up, we're playing Edmonton in Edmonton: Battle of Alberta. [He's] over there on the other side, and it's like the coolest thing ever... you know, the buildup was crazy 'cuz I knew if the opportunity presented itself—if the game went the way I hoped it would, I would get an opportunity to fight him.
I remembered in warmups tryna skate by the redline initially just kind-of gettin' a feel for it—to see if I have to say something or whatever... He's got no bucket on, his big, bald head is glarin' around, he skates by the redline with the biggest smile on his face, and just gives me the biggest wink...
At that moment I knew Okay, he remembers. It's gonna happen at some point.
We were up 1, I think it was 2-1 going into intermission or whatever—Oh, no, I think it was 1-1 and we had just scored so the position I'm like Yeah, I don't know if I can fight him now because we have the momentum and we're winning the game. I don't want to lose a fight, then we lose a game and now I'm, like, never getting a chance again.
You kind-of gotta play the game within the game like [...] there's an opportunity to fight, and there's an opportunities where you shouldn't fight. Things weren't looking good, then they score and now we need a spark. I'm like Fucking perfect.
I just skate by their bench and I'm like It's time, big boy! He jumps out, we line up, and he goes We squarin' up or we goin' right away?
I'm like I'm not fuckin' squarin' up with you right now! We're goin' right away!
Drop em, we go right away, grab each other. I know he's a lefty so he's gonna let go—let's go of my right arm before he throws one. I threw one. Big boy went down, he jumped back up pretty quick. I don't know, I tell people all the time, I'm like I would've been in the league fuckin' 2 years earlier if there was good footage of this fuckin' fight!
For some reason—For some reason, the cameras cut out. I don't know if [he] had his cousins working the cameras or something that night, or if they're in the video room or what happened.
That was my first NHL game.
It's funny 'cuz Chucky was there—Chucky's there and he knows, he saw, he always laugh when I say that I would've been in the league earlier 'cuz he knows how things like that go. You get a little bit of energy and buzz around ya, and then kind-of momentum takes you a little bit further but unfortunate[ly], I missed that opportunity but I don't regret a thing.
[...]
The opportunity was there, I just—unfortunately, for whatever reason, the Hockey Gods said not yet." (Ryan Lomberg reminiscing over his first NHL game/fight) (x)(x) (please go watch the second link to see lombos giant smile as he tells this story jfc)
and other genuinely bonkers things to say about a hockey player in your first fight... like why did this need to be said like that...what
#ryan lomberg#lombo what the fuck#for the sake of clarity lombo does refer em by name but i think its funnier to obscure it in this case for people who dont know who it is#im sure edm and the bald description gave it away of who it is#but youll never fucking guess who this bitch is waxing poetic about#the wha the huh#HIM??????#WE'RE ROMANTICISNG THAT FUCKIN GUY??? REALLY????#i hate it here#this just in the guy you adore just said the horniest shit about the worst person you know#completely forgot they both were on the flames at the same time its been erased from my memory#(guy who does not pay attention to anything that is not pantr related)#but also matthew giggling about lombos little I WOULDVE BEEN HERE EARLIER IF THE CAMERAS WORKED RIGHT#how dare we lose him to calgary again HOW DARE#hello special little matthew cameo#the homoeroticism of it all#the inherent homoeroticism of hockey fights#why did he describe it like that#do you know what “scrappy ahler tries to make it big by fighting everyone in sight to impress staff and even challenges the enforcer vet#knowing itll make him look good if he does and said enforcer vet does not give him the time of day and goes i promise ill fight you when yo#get called up during the regular season not now and to which said scrappy ahler gets called up during the regular season and doesnt expect#much but gets completely surprised when the vet 1. remembers who he is 2. the promise he made and 3. even gives him a cheeky wink about it.#and the game is chippy from the start the ahler isnt sure theyll be able to fight hin but low and behold the hockey gods bless him#and he does he even gets to decide the rules AND wins it in one punch. the downside? none of it was filmed.#but the memory of that vets wink rings clear“ does to me man?#also. a classic case of hockey gods giveth. hockey gods taketh away.#sweetheart you can be gay AND also want your cool fight filmed honey youre asking for too much#yeah lombo does like calling men bigboy yeah that's a thing

The Evil Dead (1981)
"Why have you disturbed our sleep, awakened us from our ancient slumber? You will die! Like the others before you, one by one, we will take you."
#the evil dead#1981#horror imagery#eye horror#gore tw#sam raimi#bruce campbell#ellen sandweiss#betsy baker#richard demanincor#theresa tilly#tom sullivan#joseph loduca#rob tapert#ted raimi#american cinema#video nasty#evil deadology#horror film#thus spake the people. evil dead won my poll on which horror franchise to work through next‚ and somehow this was the one that I'd not seen#a single second of; the entire trilogy (and various follow ups) passed me by. i still felt like i was coming into this knowing it beat for#beat because of the inevitable cultural osmosis you get when a film is this influential and this popular; i knew the plot‚ i knew Ash‚ i#knew what to expect. what i didn't expect was quite how good this was. received wisdom had it that this was the rough first indie film that#was followed by better‚ more polished instalments but i have to say‚ taken on its own merits‚ this is a hell of an achievement#it's immediately apparent both that this isn't just another DIY splatter nasty made to cash in‚ and that right from the get go Raimi was a#highly creative and fiercely original talent. there's no reason‚ if making a cheapy gore film‚ for Raimi to be shooting from behind the#swinging pendulum of a grandfather clock‚ or to include genuinely sweet character moments like Ash and Linda playing a cute game of#avoiding glances whilst he gives her the pendant (and so wonderfully and so darkly inverted later‚ as her demonic form plays the same game#whilst he digs her grave). seriously messed up fx in places‚ very real sense of dread‚ absolutely phenomenal sound design#sometimes the classics are classics for a reason. an absolute masterclass in indie shock horror and a massively fun time

see I like my horror films (and most other films I watch, but it's mainly horror) to be intelligent with clear narrative themes
but I like my superhero films to be campy and flooded with fan service
#I will die on this hill. superhero movies are best when they're campy and stupid and give the audience what they want#cause I mean like. comic books can be really beautiful and poignant but they can also be delightfully ridiculous#and while I can enjoy a gritty superhero film now and then I get bored of that being an ongoing trend#especially when they do the whole 'im not gonna say my classic catchphrase bc I'm *edgy*' bullshit#you're just disappointing the fans who want the reference and confusing everyone new who doesn't get the reference#anyway. Deadpool 3 is great. don't watch if you're annoyed by fan service bc oooh boy this one was written for the nerds

You get it!! I'm not a big fan of the popular discourse around Daemon's gender issues I feel like it's just people making fun of him or it's used to diminish his relationship with Rhaenyra by saying he actually wanted to be Viserys's sisterwife and is using her as a replacement.
oh thank you! <3 also like. so glad i’ve managed to avoid most of that discourse because i simply don’t pay attention to what anyone besides my beloved mutuals say about daemon anymore. i feel like you’re 100% right about the nature of those discussions based on what little i have seen though.
the idea that daemon is using rhaenyra as a replacement for viserys just seems like the latest iteration of the “daemon’s only using her for the throne” take, which has been so thoroughly disproved at this point that people who hate daemon/their relationship and in some cases rhaenyra herself had to switch tactics to try to keep the character/relationship bashing and derision somewhat canon compliant. their relationship with each other (and with viserys) and daemon’s relationship with gender/masculinity is so much more complex and interesting.
#ngl reading this ask made me feel like blake lively in the cinematic classic film the shallows#when she gets attacked by a great white while swimming in its feeding ground (hearing about the latest bad daemon takes)#and has to swim to temporary safety on a rock (brilliant character analyses i see on my dash) but.#the tide is coming in (fandom exploding when s2 airs) and then nowhere will be safe lol#i’ve never actually seen the shallows bc i dislike blake lively#but i imagine this is exactly what her character would be feeling in that situation like essentially we’re going through the same thing#if you’ve noticed how many times i’ve edited this ask no you haven’t#daemon targaryen#hotd

Not Every Film I Watch In 2024
14. Fire Down Below (1957)
#fire down below#fire down below (1957)#2024filmgifs#my gifs#what a strange little film#but exactly as homoerotic as I expected#cos what else would you get with a Classic Hollywood love triangle#it was wonderfully sarcastic dialogue#i enjoyed that so much#and the sight of Mitchum and Lemmon reacting to each other#not a pairing i ever would have thought of#and it totally works for this story of male friendship torn asunder by a wimmin#i was a little nervous about the ending#until i remembered The China Syndrome#and how that was a first for Jackie#so i relaxed and i wuz proven right cos Classic Hollywood#but a very strange plot nevertheless#and so strangely paced almost laconic and way too relaxed for its own good#but i did like that some of it was shot on location#clearly

damn. remember when disney movies were good
#ive been watching some classic 2000s disney and pixar this afternoon/evening#i also watched elemental. which was. fine i guess.#i dont like the character designs.#and while i get what they were going for i feel like any story that is a metaphor for like.#conflicting cultural/ethnic/racial communities of humans.#but represents that through nonhuman characters with very real unchangeable physical characteristics#well. it's messy#anyway. i watched monsters inc and then the incredibles. and now wreck it ralph#remember when movies were good??#when gags didnt overstay their welcome. and everything is set up and paid off elegantly including small details#and every aspect of the film contributes to the thesis#GD old pixar was good. i miss it#not every film was a hit of course but the hits are out of the ballpark#i dont think wreck it ralph is exactly on the same level but the amount of heart that went into it is so clear#sasha speaks

This popped up in my feed, so I watched it and...yeah, its pretty good, would recommend watching it. Only con is that uh, it doesn't mention the spin offs like Sarah Jane Adventures (the only female led spin off) and Torchwood, cause I honestly feel it showed even more how RTD handled female characters versus the era of Steven Moffat (could have even compared what happens when RTD writes for the 11th doctor in his guest appearance in SJA versus....what happens when Steven's writing him).
#but also wtf to learning that in classic who#the actress for liz only got to wear some pants finally#cause jon pertwee fought for her to do it#like what the actual fuck#i know classic who was iffy at times but jesus#plus peri's actress was made to film in a cold cave in a mini skirt#despite at one point getting hypothermia#and just...i must have blocked it out of my mind that steven tried to imply the doctor only ever travelled with women#cause he wanted romance#with amy having the tardis pull up all his companions on computer#bar the male ones and robots and his granddaughter#just to prove her point#which in turn meant steven sexualised every single female companion#including...literal teenagers who had parental bonds with the doctor aka like ace#Youtube

after I saw stalker on the weekend there were these two bald clones around my age that I can only assume were talking about the film. one says to the other "look I rate films based on feeling and besides the part with (I couldn't hear what he said) that made me feel absolutely nothing" Come on man...
#also in the last five minutes someone screamed BRO WHAT IS THIS MOVIE...#a couple walked out in the last ten#people were constantly rustling and getting up slamming the doors etc#i felt like a wild chimpanzee#no doubt a bunch of letterboxdinas and people seeing it out of 'obligation' as it's known in film circles as a classic or whatever

Was Elvis friends with Old Hollywood stars? I know he briefly dated Natalie Wood. Cary Grant visited him at one of his Vegas shows and they looked friendly. He worked with Barbara Stanwyck in Roustabout. And I know he met Sophia Loren because of those great photos taken of them. I can’t think of other examples.
he was definitely friendly with people of that era, as with the musicians he befriended and respected, i think levels of closeness naturally varied, but he seemed to establish a good rapport with so many contemporaries. (cary grant had tears in his eyes after that vegas show, never over it!) here's a little list of photos with some other celebrities - along with those you mentioned, i'd certainly count frank sinatra, for example, and then of course nancy, though she was in that category of lifelong friend as well as costar. i'm always moved by this quote of frank's: "There have been many accolades uttered about Elvis' talent and performances through the years, all of which I agree with wholeheartedly. I shall miss him dearly as a friend. He was a warm, considerate and generous man."
it's good timing you'd ask this because the walking in memphis insta posted this lovely tribute to his friendship with sammy davis jr. yesterday (and sammy suggesting e sing in the ghetto, understanding why he'd connect with it):
instagram
they seemed to really love one another in such a gracious and appreciative way.
i'm sure there are many other lovely stories and friendships to be found too, but that was a sweet one right at my fingertips for you ❤
and somewhat adjacent, this is a cute post:
instagram
#e was slightly separated from some of the classic era crowd by virtue of being a bit younger#and the social circles being what they were#but i think everyone who did get the chance to interact with him came away with that similar feeling of warmth#also i've probably mentioned it but it haunts me that he met marilyn for like three minutes#while filming g.i. blues when she was also on the lot and NOBODY TOOK A PHOTO#a very fleeting nice encounter rather than a friendship but still!#anonymous#letterbox#elvis presley#i was a dreamer

Donald Sutherland steals the show as a disarmingly charming bank robber (turned convict, turned escaped convict), as John Wood in The Saint: Escape Route (5.14, ITC, 1966)
#fave spotting#donald sutherland#the saint#escape route#1966#classic tv#itc#followers of my faves spotted will know‚ as I've rambled about it in tags before‚ that prior to becoming a big screen legend Don spent#a couple of years in the uk as part of the rentayank crowd‚ making a couple of horror films and filling guest spots on genre tv#he'd already done a Saint (3.23 The Happy Suicide) which can be found if you follow my tag#mostly his uk tv roles were of one kind: creepy villains (or occasionally as in his prior Saint ep‚ a creepy red herring)#so this was honestly a delightful surprise; finally someone GOT Donald Sutherland‚ and he gets to play the kind of part#he'd be doing in cinemas in the following decade. he's fun! he's kooky! he's a bank robber‚ sure‚ but he's also just hugely#endearing. and that isn't just me‚ you feel like the script likes him too. damn it you feel like Simon himself wants him to get away by the#end (he bids him good luck with what seems like real sincerity)#hard to express just how adorable this hardened criminal is. in his first appearance he starts a fistfight in prison with Simon and as soon#as Simon gets carted off to solitary he's immediately like 'aww it wasn't his fault‚ i was the one being a dick'#he calls everyone baby‚ including the Saint‚ including numerous middle aged men#i mean SPOILER for the episode incoming but the escape route is so successful and nobody is ever found bc the bad guys are#murdering their clients (i guessed as much and was truly sad when Don got on the boat to get out of the country) which leads to an amazing#scene where Don's like 'Hey baby‚ where's the second boat to pick me up?' and when the gruff villain pulls a gun out he just says#'....baby?' as his final words. amazing. 10 out of 10 no notes performance

The biggest offender of the ROP show : it doesn't do any justice to Ar-Pharazon/Sauron. And Ar-Pharazon isn't DILF enough
Anon, you are so right. Well, I don't think it's the biggest offense, but it is a major offense! It didn't help that imo Halbrand is a black hole of charisma, store-brand Viggo. I don't think they even interacted :(
I quite liked Pharazon's look but not for him; it would have worked well for an OC advisor or maybe Amandil. But Pharazon himself should be smoking hot and look much younger: prime of life, not entering old age. I'd love him to resemble Elrond (and thus Luthien).
#speaking of dilfs i'm once more bothered that elendil told galadriel that she reminded him of one of his children#(his children who are very much early adulthood - earien trying to get into her preferred university)#(and isildur who's waffling on what major to choose)#elendil as a dilf is excellent#galadriel framed as younger and more immature than him is so very much not#(esp since he towers over her physically)#i did like what they were going for with the numenorean look; love those classical mediterranean vibes#but i don't think they pulled it off entirely and a lot of the clothes looked cheap (miriel's fabric armor)#one thing with a small budget and limited filming time#less forgivable in a production that spent more money per minute of film than the lotr movies did

“I don’t see what else there could be to it,” he admitted with a little shrug-for the life of him, he couldn’t really imagine what Morgan’s motives could be other than riding proverbial coattails in a bid for fame. It seemed like the only logical answer he could think of, really; try as he might to think of something else, he just couldn’t seem to!
“Now, I admit, I never saw him trail after La Constance,” he continued, as he took another bite of mashed potatoes, chewing thoughtfully before saying, “But I think we can chalk that up to her being...considerably less open to new company than you are, my dear.”
He smiled slyly and chuckled a bit when he said this, before adding, “La Constance only welcomes the company of those with...sizable bank accounts, let’s say, and the best way to get her to be anything other than cold and dismissive is to flash something sparkly in front of her. I’ve actually seen her smile simply because of the patrons gifted her a new pair of ornate earrings, if you can believe it.”
La Constance actually smiling was an unusually creepy sight (he was so used to seeing her scowling unpleasantly that seeing her flash a smile-even a fake one-was disconcerting), but he quickly put that image out of his head as he eyed his slice of cake, saying, “But Thaddeus Morgan, on an orchestra member’s salary? He’d never be able to afford La Constance’s expensive tastes, so trying to earn a little fame from her is out of the question. So I think that explains why he hasn’t been trailing around after her the way he has you.”
Emily, comparatively, was a down-to-Earth young woman, who didn’t need bottles of champagne on ice or pretty baubles to win her over; no, she was a simple woman when it came to her friendships, and while this was a quality Randall admired in her, he could also see how Morgan might think that “simple” means “easy”. It irked him to think so, but he doubted Morgan would get very far in his endeavors.
#((aaah that'd be great! it's early morning; she's feeling a little stronger; and she hasn't really gotten to see the rest of the house))#((so she decides to get on up out of the water and wanders out into the first room she sees; which just so happens to be randall's))#((and he just about has a heart attack when he sees her staring down at him because he was A) not expecting to see her there))#((and B) didn't even know she could be out of the water for a certain amount of time! he's shocked!))#((but he at least learns that she can actually be on land; even if it is for a certain amount of time!))#((and true; randall would be SO red were emily to pick him up! he'd be SO flustered!))#((and i totally see emily having great strength! she would if she's able to pull grown men into the water with her))#((so i could see her being able to pick up randall; move heavy objects; and so on!))#((and honestly i'm kinda in love with the idea of siren!emily carrying/holding randall because it's a parallel))#((to one of my favorite tableaus; 'the touch of the monster' in which the monster carries a human-usually a woman-bridal style!))#((you see it on a lot of 50s sci-fi/horror movie posters like 'forbidden planet'; as well as in classic horror films))#((including the original 'creature from the black lagoon'!))#((i don't think i've ever seen a female monster carrying a male human in that fashion so i think it'd be a fun spin! :D))#((what do you think?))#((also: sorry this is so late!))#outofhatboxes#beatingheart-bride#V:Phantasm of the Mansion
