James O'Brien (Director) Western Religion | Bio

James O’Brien

A graduate of Providence College in 1992 with BA in English Literature and a Theatre minor, O’Brien first began making short films and documentaries at PC.

After a backpacking trip around Europe, he moved to Los Angeles in the fall of ‘92. His first film out west was “Bastard,” a B&W short about a schizophrenic hit man. American Cinemateque selected the film to open for Werner Herzog’s “Nosferatu” at a DGA Herzog retrospective.

O’Brien followed this with his first feature, a 16mm color film, blown-up to 35mm, called “Venice Bound.” The film debuted at the Orpheum Theatre in downtown LA, before making it’s international premiere at the 1995 Cannes Film Festival.

Variety magazine gave the film a positive review, calling O’Brien a “talent in the raw” and “Venice Bound” a movie that kept you “glued to the screen.” 

Commissioned scripts followed in the mid-to-late nineties. During this time, James worked on set doing any number of jobs from set-painter and set construction to 2nd AD on low-budget features and music videos.

In the early years of 2000, O’Brien held the post of managing editor of “Comic News,” a Vermont based monthly magazine. 

James moved back to Los Angeles in 2004. He plied his trade in the location business, doing signature work for a wide range of television shows, commercials, and studio features.

In the years that followed, O'Brien worked on two feature films concurrently:

“Wish You Were Here,” a cross country road movie and his second feature film. It debuted on iTunes in 2013.

“Hyperfutura,” a cult no budget sci-fi, and his third feature film. It debuted on iTunes and cable VOD in 2013.  

During this period, O’Brien wrote the commissioned screenplay “The Backward Path,” about a detective investigating a case in hell, as well as penning the sci-fi TV series “Hardboiled” for Producer Jefery Levy.

Western Religion is O'Brien's fourth feature and his biggest, most expansive production to date. It is currently in post production.

Mary Manofsky has appeared is such television shows as “ER,” “Judging Amy,” “Suddenly Susan,” “Veronica’s Closet” among others. She has also appeared in numerous films, commercials, plays and online shows. A native of Ohio, she now resides in Los Angeles by way of New York. She appeared in the Sunday company of the famed Groundlings improv troupe and has graced many of Los Angeles’ most noted comedy stages. Merik Tadros (Zain Mohammad) Western Religion Bio

Merik Tadros was born on April 15th 1983 in Chicago, Illinois, USA. After studying Theatre Arts and Cinema for one semester at the University of Iowa, he headed to Hollywood to study shortly at The Groundlings Theatre and then move on to the Stella Adler Academy of Acting's conservatory program. Adler Fest brought Merik to the Stage in one acts "On Time" and Woody Allen's "Death Knocks." He then went on to perform in the original play "Liberty Injustice" at The Lex Theatre in Hollywood, California. Steven Spielberg's Munich was his first professional on screen acting role portraying "Tony the Cowboy." Television credits include: NCIS, 24, CSI Miami, E-Ring, & Notes From The Underbelly. Merik was seen in 2009 starring opposite Harrison Ford and Cliff Curtis in writer-director Wayne Kramer's film Crossing Over, as well as the two part NCIS pilot spin-off titled Legend for NCIS: Los Angeles.

Frankie Ray was born in Las Vegas Nevada. After growing up in a variety of areas Colville/Spokane WA. Oakland/Vallejo Ca, he joined the U.S. Army in 1979 out of Bend Oregon and spent 3 years in Germany. There he learned to play guitar. Finishing up his 3 years of service, he joined a band in Tacoma Wa called Lamoor. Without income from the band he started teaching Pro Ballroom and Latin Dancing at Fred Astaire Dance studio in Tacoma Wa. Teaching and honing his skill for over 10 years at various studios around the country he finished his ballroom dancing Career at Arthur Murray's in Beverly Hills. J. Anthony McCarthy (Border Marshall) Western Religion | Bio

J. Anthony McCarthy has been knocking around Hollywood for a little while.  Born in Washington DC, he lived up and down the East Coast before heading to Los Angeles. He's very pleased to have been a part of the Western Religion filming experience, he's always wanted to do his best Brian Dennehy from Silverado.

His original webseries, and Boris (www.andboris.com) is available for perusal.  His latest films, Thursday's Speaker and The Last Cry are making the rounds of the Film Festivals right now and doing very well.

He's appeared on Castle, How I Met Your Mother, The Protector,  Las Vegas, Alias, American Dreams and numerous independent films.  His dreams of being a circus strongman when he grows up are the basis for the soon to be released feature film The Lempke Brothers.

Buddy Daniels Friedman was born in Philadelphia. Went to Temple University where he studied communication, Acting Stocks & bonds. In the winter of 1969 December 31st. Got on a Plane for California & arrived Jan. 1st 1970, Started a new life & basically grew up as an adult out in Sunny LA.   Since he was a hairdresser before, that is what he did most of the time. But in 1986 did his 1st film called Danger Zone, which he had a starring role in. This was the start of a long list of films to follow, coupled with many Commercials which in fact won him a Bellding award for a Pistachio Comm. which went National around 1993. Since then He has been on a role with over 30 Films, 10 commercials, several TV shows like Golden Girls, Ally McBeal, Star Trek, Young & the Restless, Passions (Soap) Recurring & also to mention over 50 Music Video,s.   Has worked with stars such as Betty White, Charles Grodin, & Snoop Dog.  Being in the film Western Religion as a Lead Bad Guy ( Which gets killed right away) is a highlight in his life for he has always wanted to do a western film & is looking forward to many more.

Greg Jackson (Roland Dunn) WESTERN RELIGION | Bio

Greg is from upstate New York. After spending 4 years in the Navy, Greg was discovered singing in a club in New York City where he signed his first record deal. He relocated to Los Angeles where he starred in over 30 national television commercials. He worked as a professional model in Europe, NY, and LA. He is presently working in film and television.

He has just wrapped on soon to be released" Jesus in cowboy boots" working opposite Alicia Silverstone. Presently in production with Silk Dog films playing the part of John Marston, the main character in the popular video game "Red Dead Redemption".

Today and this week have been about:

Looking for superstars who are very good at what they do, able to stay in that lane, and do that. This company is in its embryonic stage right now. We’re still gestating. We’re just forming in the womb. We don’t even know what sex we are. We don’t know what sex this baby is yet. We don’t know what this company even is right now. We’ve got Western Religion in the can and these other projects in the works, but we have no idea where this company is going to go and ultimately what identity it’s going to take. That’s exciting because we kind of find out as we go and there’s no really forcing that.

The people that we’ve had meetings with so far are the best people we have cherry-picked from Western Religion. The best people off that film definitely seem to be willing to come in and do stuff with us. It’s amazing. That’ll be the process. You do a project, you bond with certain people, and those people become part of what you’re doing. We are just trying to create an atmosphere where we can all do stuff.

The first week officially in the new office on Sunset and Gower has been productive, but you have to understand that this company has been in development for the past eight months. I wanted to start this company, but it’s about forming partnerships. Alethea is my creative partner and is invaluable.

I feel I grow everyday from this process. I get very frustrated and I can be less than graceful in dealing with people in the office especially when I have expectations, those expectations aren’t met, and then letting them know when I’m mildly displeased. We’re trying to build and do something cool. Everything that we’ve imagined we would do, we’ve done. Starting with the western, Sunset/Gower, and all these little things, we just keep doing it and go forward.

I’m always learning. There’s so much that I don’t know. I’ve been in and out of this business for a long time, but there’s so much about this business that I don’t know. I’ve been out more than I’ve been in and I’m constantly learning. I don’t know a lot of things, but I do have great instincts and a basic ability to make decisions and lead. I’ve always had these skills. I try to bring something new to the table every day.

It’s all exciting and what I really need are people who are on board regardless of what position they are in. People have to be pliable and willing if I say, “You were doing this, but now I need you doing this.” I need people who just say, “Ok, let’s do that. Ok, that is my new position. Ok, that’s what’s going on.” That is how this thing is going to be built because there are so many moving parts in this thing.
