Western Disney AU: At the Stables by friend Levi
Being in the Wild West only meant adventure, or that's what someone would assume. Gunslingers and all sorts, but not in this little town. The folk there were far too friendly, though that never stopped chaos from brewing.
The sun peeked in through the windows and onto Lampwick's drooling face, snoring away without worries. Suddenly, a little girl barged in with an irritated expression. He was supposed to get up earlier to help his sister with the chores while their mother was busy. Unfortunately, he had no plans of getting up any time soon.
"Hey! Lampwick!" she yelled.
He jolted awake and looked around in alarm.
"Huh..? Is there school today?" he'd yawn.
"No, you big oaf! You were meant to be getting the groceries by now!"
He'd scratch his head before snapping his fingers.
"My bad! I totally forgot!"
Rushing to get dressed, he ran around to get some bread for his breakfast and a basket to place all the shopping. Before anyone could complain, he was already out the door. On his way to town, he recognised some familiar faces that were already up and about. The townsfolk tended to their business in the distance, but he easily got sidetracked, changing course to stop by the horses at the stable nearby. He couldn’t resist the urge to bother them.
Waiting for him on his path was a pretty girl from the native tribe that they often did trades with. She glanced around as she kicked a pebble, huffing impatiently as if she was waiting for someone. He was surprised she was wandering about like this, but was pleased to see her.
"Tigerlily! Great day for mischief, right?" he called out with a snicker.
She rolled her eyes and shook her head with a giggle.
"You on your way to bother the horses again? One of these days they're gonna knock you out!" she exclaimed back.
He approached her, grinning as he usually does.
"What're you doing around here? Did ya miss me or something?"
Her cheeks turned slightly pink at the comment, rolling her eyes despite the fact he was right. But she wasn't going to admit that. He'd tease her for the rest of her life.
“In your dreams!” she’d scoff. “I’m only here to wait for Peter and then I’m going to pick up a few things for my dad. The usual checkup on our trades and stuff.”
He cocked his head to the side and crossed his arms with a playful chuckle.
“How heartbreaking. Thought you actually wanted to see me.”
“If you keep saying that, I’ll assume that you’re the one who’s seeking me out.”
He’d raise his hands to surrender, running out of retorts to throw her way.
“Fine fine. I’ll stop teasing ya.”
The pair shared a familiar warm smile with each other. They had been friends for a while, when Lampwick’s mother, Carina, would visit the friends she had made as a saloon girl in the past. The two troublemakers would often mess around and crack jokes, often bothering the adults around them with their antics.
“Anyways, where is Peter? Doesn’t he come to look at the stables around this time?” Lampwick inquired.
“He asked me to get him a wooden practice gun, and I was hoping to see him to discuss more details about it. But I’m getting bored sticking around here”, Tigerlily would sigh before the auburn haired boy nudges her.
“Let’s go have some fun! We can put our duties on hold for a little bit. Nobody will know!”
“Hmmm… I don’t know… You said that last time and my dad ended up lecturing me for an entire hour once I got back home.”
“Come on! We can get groceries for me and do your trade stuff while we roam around. I’ve been itching to do something entertaining”, he grinned, which was enough to sway her into playing along with his plan.
“Alright, you’ve got me convinced. What type of shenanigans did you have in mind?”
He’d wrap his arm around Tigerlily, making her heart skip a beat from the sudden closeness. Of course, he was too oblivious to notice how flustered she was, and she was rather good at pretending she wasn’t.
He started dragging her to the stable of one of the most ferocious horses… Tinkerbell. She was infamous for her stubbornness, driving away any potential buyers. Despite that, it was said this Arabian mare could run so fast it was like she could fly, much like a fairy. Though she had often thrown her riders off her back whenever she was irritated, making her rather dangerous. Tigerlily’s eyes widened in disbelief and looked at him with a mix of concern and intrigue.
“Isn’t this that horse that Peter wanted to get for himself?” she asked.
“It is in fact that horse. I’ve no interest in getting one as you already know. But… We can have a bit of a bet while nobody is looking.”
“What sort of bet?”
He’d check the area and his surroundings, to ensure they won’t be caught. He knew he’d get grounded if his mother found out about this. In the corner was a block of hay to feed the horses, and he hastily took two handfuls of it before placing some in Tigerlily’s hand.
“I bet Tinkerbell will accept my hay!” he exclaimed.
She smirked at his cockiness and held her head high.
“I see how it is. Well, I bet she’ll accept mine first!”
“Oh really? Then how about this. Loser has to eat hay like a horse.”
“You’re on!”
The two fist bumped to solidify this deal before turning back to the uninterested mare. Lampwick fearlessly stepped forward with a confident beaming smile and shoved the clump of dried grass towards her snout. Tinkerbell snorted and sniffed him, but she didn’t dare take a bite. It’s as if she knew he was up to no good. She simply turned her back on him, swishing her tail around almost sassily.
“Doesn’t look like your smile charmed her at all”, Tigerlily teased.
That simple statement was enough to fuel his competitive behaviour. He stuck his hand into her stable, trying desperately to get her attention.
“Hello!? C’mon, Tinkerbell! Don’t be like this! I don’t wanna eat this straw!” he begged.
All the ruckus aggravated her, causing her to neigh loudly which alarmed them. She spun around and snapped at Lampwick, causing him to yelp and fall onto his behind. He groaned in pain as his companion howled with laughter.
“Haha very funny”, he scowled.
Feeling gratified, what worry Tigerlily had washed away. She calmly and carefully presented the hay to an upset Tinkerbell, awaiting what she’d do. At first, the mare was sceptical, glaring at the petite native girl. But she sensed her sincerity, and she was rather peckish. She slowly extended her neck and took a nibble of the hay, then she turned her back to them again. Lampwick’s mouth went agape, unable to process the fact he just lost.
“What!? How!?”
Tigerlily cackled and clapped in amusement. She dumped the hay onto his lap and crossed her arms.
“Eat up. You must be hungry.”
He grimaced, reluctantly picking up a strand and let it hover in front of his lips. He closed his eyes shut and took a deep breath, shoving it in his mouth and swallowing as fast as he could. The taste was ghastly, like the driest leaves in the world with a strong aftertaste of soil. It made him gag, and the regret had him wishing he just left for the groceries.

MoringMark is probably one of the most fascinating individuals on the internet.
Their identity is a complete mystery, they’ve been making Owl House fan comics for four years straight and every time The Owl House trends on here it’s usually because of their fan comics.

A lawman and a grifter…or an outlaw
This went from a comic to a panel to a single drawing to multiple scenes on a wide canvas because I was that indecisive. But it was worth it.
A gift for my pal 🥰 Happy birthday, @polisena-art !!! I hope this birthday was a great one 🥰

I really enjoyed Wish's animation style, but I think they made a fundamental mistake with it.
When Jennifer Lee says that they were trying to mimic the watercolor style, they are speaking about taking inspiration of Gustaf Tenggren's art for Snow White and Pinocchio.
They tried to give this texture to the movie.
Tumblr media
If you look at the films stills, you can see that it does have the same "watercolor on paper" texture as this concept art, although subdue.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
They even had visual tests by making Asha's 3d model walk across Pinocchio's background.
Tumblr media
However when it comes to the backgrounds they took inspiration from Sleeping Beauty, which was the biggest mistake they could ever have made, because Sleeping Beauty is the complete opposite of the watercolor effect they were trying to achieve.
Sleeping Beauty uses gouache, has bold colors, and is inspired by gothic, medieval tapestries.
The watercolor effect they were going for came from Snow White and Pinocchio, that are inspired by 19th century Storybook illustrations, with subdue color, rustic and earthly backgrounds, and a juxtaposition between light and shadows.
Here are also some illustrations from the same Gustaf Tenggren
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Muted colors, juxtaposition of light and shadows, rustic, earthly, sketchy backgrounds.
This would dever fit in with the highly detailed and colorful Sleeping Beauty backgrounds
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Basically Wish's biggest problem is that its two biggest stylistic sources just don't go together.
They should either went with the Snow White/Pinocchio's rustic and charming storybook visual, or the Sleeping Beauty's elegant medieval tapestry look.

✨"Ready, Cosmo?" "Ready, Wanda!"✨
Negativity, context, and a bonus doodle under the cut~
lol this is so miserably bad. I've been doodling fairies in different styles all week and so when I actually finished their little bodies on this one I was like, yes okay I'll color something. And then I couldn't bring myself to shade it for real; I haven't used Sai in awhile, I have work tomorrow, the drawing is creepy. You know it's bad when you break out the default airbrush for a lightspeed dusting. The irony is that this how I would have unironically shaded them in the 2000s lmao
Anyway if you know anything about me, you know it's incredibly bizarre for me to be drawing Coz & Wan in 2024 after the old show burned me - let alone drawing them fifty times in a row. And if you know me even better than that, you know that FOP was an intrinsic part of my identity during the initial years of its run. Cosmo and Wanda were everythiiiiing to me for a hot minute.
So I gave A New Wish a chance and I am so happy to see that it's so sweet and wholesome, that the fairies have their sparkly goofy souls back. I wrote a bunch of shit about it on Twitter.
Anyway I'll see y'all when I post something else in a year or two. ✨
Edit: actually, no, here's a bonus doodle of them looking generic because I gotta show you i can do "better" (and not draw hands) ahhh

“Aftermath” 🎨 2024 (Arcane AU) They had turned on him. It was a mutiny. Betrayal. After having taken an outcast orphan under his wing, the band of outlaws that rode by Silco’s side saw it fit to relieve him of his command. She was clouding his ever narrowing vision. Making him soft. Weak.
They couldnt stand to botch another robbery. Not with the full force of the law on their tail.
So they aimed to kill Silco, and his hazard of a protégé. All the while making it pointedly clear that they had never respected him as much as their previous leader, Vander.
Little Powder, aka Gun Powder, watched in horror as the gang roughed him up, repeatedly questioning him as to her whereabouts. He said nothing. And when it became clear that they were going to do him in… she lit the fuse.
She had always pursued combustible weapons in effort to defend herself.
Now she would use that creative force to defend Silco. If only he had been as spry as he used to be- then he would have cleared the blast. But-it was a blast that was so much larger than Powder had anticipated.
The few remaining gang members had run off, and the coast was clear save for the burning barn debris and smoldering ruins.
And Silco, lying there on the dusty ground, still and motionless.
Against the flickering firelight she couldn’t make out if he was breathing or not, and likewise through her screams and cries could not hear it.
She stayed for what seemed an eternity, but nothing changed. The fire raged on, and soon there were faint sounds of approaching lawmen. Judging by the growing thunder, there were many.
She panicked and ran. Leaving Silco behind.
She ran until she couldn’t anymore. She managed to stow away onto boxcar- on a train that was going, well- who knew. She sat there wondering what her future would bring…
not knowing Silco was still alive.

HAVE YOU NOTICED HOW SNOW WHITE'S DESIGN IS THE MOST DIFICULT TO RECREATE?
@themousefromfantasyland @princesssarisa
@faintingheroine @thealmightyemprex
So, seeing the Disney Princesses magazines, books and merchandising over the years, I felt that most of the princesses, if correcting some details, could easily be made to look exactly like they looked in their original movies (for example, coloring Cinderella's hair and dress from golden blonde and blue scheme to strawberry blonde and silver-white scheme).
There is only one exception: Snow White, while close to the design of her movie counterpart, always felt... like something was of, but I couldn't articulate why.
The black hair and ribbon were there, along with the color scheme of the dress, I should be seeing the same character, right?
Then, revisiting the movie, its behind the scenes production designs, and images of merchandise, I could notice that there were differences:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Notice how the eyelids are more heavy, the waist is more realistic, and the cheeks are more round in the screencap of the 1937 animated movie, while in a book illustration recreating the story, the eyelids are lighter instead of heavy, the waist is thinner, and the face lacks the chubby cheeks.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The hair in the 1937 is raven dark, while in the merchandise, it receives a blue shinning.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The nose is less defined in the 1937 animated movie, while in the merchandise, she is drawn with a perfectly, well defined nose.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
In the 1937 movie, you can say that since it was still the animators first foray with realistic drawn, and moving human cell animated characters, with the priority being making the character move in a expressive way, while they still had a basis for how the character would look like, that they were still creating the character as they animated her.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
So in the actual movie, you can see her as a human character who is still raw, rustic... some contemporary viewers could even brand her as "ugly" or "weird".
Tumblr media Tumblr media
But to me, those imperfections, born from the animators embracing their limitations with this early work in realistic human characters, make her more expressive, lively... they make her more human, beautiful in her imperfections.
Most artists working in the Princesses movies, shows and merchandising today, don't have to embrace the same limitations the 1937 animators had no choice but embrace.
So they can only work in making shining, more polished redesigns as A representation of Snow White... but they probably can't recreate the rustic, charming imperfections of the original Snow White.
Their technology, and medium is not designed for that.

“Ercole was a lot of fun to write because he’s a narcissist. But, like most narcissists, he’s incredibly insecure. He doesn’t want anyone else stealing attention from him. He’s a small fish who thinks he’s a huge fish because the pond isn’t very big.” —Jesse Andrews, Luca screenwriter
God help me. The Luca production notes are making me feel a sliver of a quark of interest in Ercole’s character.
