Convicted killer Brian Doyle has been granted more freedom by the National Parole Board despite concerns over his evasive answers during the hearing.

Doyle had previously allowed an innocent man to go to jail for his crime and had broken release conditions on his first attempt at parole.

The victim's son expressed concern for the community where Doyle may end up and believes he should be under stricter watch.

2. The skyline in Placentia Bay, NL looks a little different these days following the completion of the slip form operation on the West White Rose project.

This added 92.35 metres to the existing project structure, bringing it to a height of 139.2 metres. The slip form took 69 days, working 24/7, and used 8,000 cubic metres of concrete – the equivalent of three Olympic sized swimming pools!

3. Three individuals have been arrested and charged in connection with seven break-ins in St. Anthony.

The trio was identified by the public and alleged to have been involved in five break-ins in a week.

Dominick Igloliorte faces multiple charges including break and enter, theft, and mischief, while the other two face charges of break and enter and breach of probation, and theft and mischief.

4. Water bomber pilots in Newfoundland and Labrador are facing a staffing crunch with the lowest staffing levels in the province's history.

The shortage of pilots is having far-reaching impacts as neighbouring provinces rely on their assistance during disasters.

Despite government accolades, the pilots are urging politicians to address the staffing issue, as they currently only have enough pilots to operate on a full-time basis with just three pilots.

5. The regulated price of gas has decreased by up to 5.2 cents a litre and there is a break on diesel, furnace oil, and propane in Newfoundland.

6. The Bank of Canada has raised its key lending rate by 0.25 percentage points.

7. Smoke from wildfires in Canada has caused air quality alerts across multiple US states, highlighting the threat of harmful microscopic particles to people's health even hundreds of miles away from fire sites.

Western Canada's dozens of fires have prompted some oil production to be curtailed, impacting the region's economy.

8. The Newfoundland and Labrador Housing Corp. has issued a request for proposals for the creation of new affordable homes in the province’s rental market.

9. The Folk Arts Society has announced the lineup for this year's Music @ Concert Series in St. John's, featuring 16 concerts across three venues over three months.

10. NL Pet Expo is taking place in Mount Pearl this weekend.

Summer has arrived, and with it, the single greatest proliferation of life in Central Appalachia. This is the time of great, ostentatious wildflowers, one more showy and resplendent than the next, each competing with the other for the swarms of pollinators that have emerged to drink from the earth's sweet nectar pots, find their mates, and plant their eggs in the all-too-brief span before their whirring energies have faded into oblivion. At no time do I feel more connected to life's urgent, relentless pulse than in the electric heat of summer; the rich meadows, bogs, streambanks, and hedgerows are my temples and the tiny creatures that come to them to feed and renew their kind are the only intermediaries I need to realize true spiritual peace and joy.

Photos from a stopover at Prickett's Fort State Park after visiting Blake's grandmother. You can search my tumblr for prior posts about the history of the fort and the Job Prickett homestead or read about it here. Broadleaf arrowhead (Sagittaria latifolia) is now blooming along the river and butternuts have started dropping, meaning the end of summer is not far off. Butternut (Juglans cinerea) is similar in appearance and closely related to black walnut, but has oval-oblong fruits rather than round ones.

See that white layer in this hillside? That's an extremely important white layer. 680,000 years ago (give or take), a large volcanic system in what is now Wyoming erupted catastrophically, spewing ash and debris across the North American continent. You might have heard of it, it's called Yellowstone Caldera. You may notice that these pictures in no way resemble the verdant forests of the Rocky Mountains and that is because they are from Death Valley, California, located more than 620 miles (1000 km) away from the Yellowstone Caldera!

But... it gets cooler.

The hills this ash layer is exposed in, the Kit Fox Hills, have been uplifted. The mudstone and sediments here are ancient valley fill, meaning that they used to be the bottom of the valley and are now about 400'/120 m above the current valley floor. This is the action of the Northern Death Valley fault zone, one of California's longest active faults. In this area, that fault has some excellent outcrops as seen below.

Next door to Death Valley to the west is Panamint Valley. It's not quite as big or dramatic as Death Valley but it has many of the same sorts of geologic features which have formed over a shorter geologic timeframe, interestingly. The faults in Panamint Valley just move faster than those in Death Valley so things are a little more youthful over there. In the middle of Panamint Valley, we see this same Yellowstone ash layer but with a caveat - instead of a mere 400 feet, in Panamint Valley that ash is more than 500 feet above the valley floor! That suggests that the valley subsidence of Panamint Valley is about 20% faster than Death Valley. The true story is more complex than that, but it's good as a reference point. Let's see what that looks like.

It's hard to see in this aerial imagery, but near the top of this steep escarpment is that same volcanic ash layer. It's a bit thicker here because this big pile of material I've outlined is an ancient delta. Panamint and Death Valleys have repeatedly hosted large lakes during cooler and wetter times. This huge delta deposit is over 1.2 million years old at the base, and about 600,000 years old at the top (above the Yellowstone ash). As the Panamint Mountains (background) rose and the valley subsided, huge amounts of eroded rock and gravel were dumped on this delta. So what you're looking at is a 1 million year-long record of the floor of Panamint Valley! How cool is that?
