Hi, how much is the level of obedience and docilty of Laika breeds in average comparated to other primitive dogs as sleddogs types like Siberian Husky, Greenland Dog and Alaskan Malamute?
Compared to the average pet Siberian that most people are familiar with, WSL are much more biddable and a bit less hectic. They are still independent, agile, drivey, LOUD working dogs who need an outlet, but all those "funny" videos of Siberians causing chaos in the average pet owner's home is not typical of a WSL (most are owned by hunters who know how to handle them though). They are closer to a working line Siberian in temperament, however, they can be pretty spicy with other dogs, especially strange dogs. Not all of them are but it's something people should definitely be aware of if they're considering a WSL. They don't do well with harsh handling, I've seen more than a few instances of WSL biting someone who did not respect the dog, so they will stand up for themselves if they feel the need. I've never met a Greenland Dog and have only been around a few Malamutes so I can't make a great comparison to those, but they are somewhat similar to those breeds.

Scary News
Humanity is in danger of crossing the point of no return for five of Earth’s natural systems because of human-caused climate change, according to a new study from an international team of more than 200 researchers. The collapse of Greenland and West Antarctic ice sheets, widespread coral reef die-offs in warm water, disruption of the North Atlantic subpolar gyre circulation, and the abrupt thawing of permafrost regions are all in danger of being irreversibly crossed at 1.5 degrees Celsius of warming. Global temperatures have already risen between 1.1 and 1.3 degrees. “Tipping points in the Earth system pose threats of a magnitude never faced by humanity,” Tim Lenton said, lead author of the Global Tipping Points report. “They can trigger devastating domino effects, including the loss of whole ecosystems and capacity to grow staple crops, with societal impacts including mass displacement, political instability and financial collapse.” Lenton added that the report is a “tale of two future paths for humanity. We’ve basically left it too late for incremental action. Instead, we need to find and trigger what we’re calling some positive tipping points that accelerate action down an alternative pathway.”

US diplomat: "Okay, so you bought some of Alaska's land from Russia, okay, okay. But...your people live on the other side of the world, and, let's be real here, we're too racist to respect you as equals. Why should we honour your deal with the Russian Empire when we can just...waltz in and annex your little home away from home?"
Tsalal Alaskan colonist leader: "Good question! Do you see this missile, this one right here, bigger than a train? Its warhead is filled with several tons of fuel-air explosives. Now, I'm not saying that we have a dozen of these things stocked on ships ready to fire at any given moment and a bunch of fanatical suicide pilots ready to fly them ludicrous distances into your nearest population centers...
"But I'm not not saying that."
#and so the alaskan enclave hangs around until maybe. 1930 ish.#writing#the entire north sphere has collapsed by 1940 due to extreme logistics issues hostile neighbours and a closing of the tech gap#at its height it encompasses a piece of alaska (peaceful)#western Ireland (hahaha not peaceful)#iceland greenland a scrap of siberia parts of west africa and some islands#but it only spans all those areas for a couple of years and in the end most of them get ethnically cleansed#still its fun to give the western world a taste of that conquistador medicine for a little while#along with some lingering cultural trauma#alaska is the beginning of the end and also results in the russian tsars coming off life support and the birth of an alt-soviet style state#they don't get scotland in this au and they certainly don't have northern holdings by the 21st century

Photos from Охотничьи Лайки (Hunting Laiki) by А. Т. Войлочников (A. T. Voylochnikov) and С. Д. Войлочникова (S. D. Voylochnikova).
Top image is a Greenland Dog
Bottom image is an F1 Wolf x West Siberian Laika hybrid. The second photo is of who I believe to be the same animal from the laikirus (dot) ru database. Not the exact same image and no name or registration number in the book so not 100% sure but it sure looks similar. The laikirus animal, Ulka, was born to a wild taken siberian wolf named Naida, and a pure dog WSL. Ulka was bred to pure WSL males, and as far as i can tell so were the continuing offspring. I haven't been able to find where her line ends so far, for all I know there are living descendants of her now. She was born to the ВНИИОЗ (VHIIOZ, still haven't looked up what thats an abbreviation for) kennel as part of an experiment for the viability of WSL x Wolf hunting dogs.
I'm only able to roughly translate russian currently so *please* correct me if I make any errors on these!

niche complaint time:
the people that insist that new zealand is named after danish islands instead of dutch islands after being mapped by dutch sailor abel tasman, who is the namesake of the tasman sea and tasmania, and called australia new holland continues to make me unreasonably angry.
side note i over did it in the tags im sorry
#its like#to the west west dutch#to west west south is dutch#to the west dutch#WERE DANISH#the danish were more interested in their immediate area and greenland and iceland#they had no business in the southern hemisphere#the closest is german new guinea#like i know its zealand vs zeeland but fr the danish had their sights to the north#also yes its new zealand (for the zeeland province) and new holland (for the holland north/south provinces)#much like new york was new amsterdam#also it took me to the last month to find out that nutmeg was from islands to the north of australia and west of west papua#and likely have common ancestors in both from the sahul days

Solar Eclipse Fashion!
The 2024 Solar Eclipse is in the record books. This amazing life changing, soul searching event brought together people from all over the US (and in some cases the world) and from all walks of life. The total solar eclipse was visible in the US from Texas to Maine with a partial eclipse visible almost nationwide. To celebrate an event like this, sometimes it takes a bit of cohesion for those…

Indigenous here is a political designation which describes a people groups relationship with colonialism - ie. Saami people are an indigenous group but Finnish/Swedish/Norwegian/Russian people are not, even though they are both genetically from the same countries- because of the groups different relationships with colonialism.

Happy Indigenous Peoples Day!
This is your reminder that the Alaskan Malamute is NOT an indigenous dog breed. It may have indigenous ancestry but its creation, the standards imposed on it, and every aspect of its direction have been steered by white people from the very beginning. Even it’s name is inaccurate to its ancestry.
There are still Inuit breeding traditional sled dogs today. They are not some mythological people of old. They’re uploading photos their dogs, their hunting, their friends, their communities to social media as you read this.
Inuit dog breeds such as the Canadian Inuit Dog and Greenland Dog share struggles the Alaskan Malamute never has. The Canadian Inuit Dogs were culled en mass in the 1970s by the Canadian government which is still a source of trauma for people today. Knowledge of traditional dog keeping has been so fractured that I know of several young people using YouTube to learn their traditional crafts instead of being taught by people in their communities. The Greenland Dog is perhaps one of the most isolated dog breeds in the world and is extremely vulnerable to changes from Global Warming. As the climate warms it is harder and harder for the dogs and the people that seek to continue their traditional way of life to function as they desire. Much of Greenland subsists on hunting and tourism of their landscape and traditional activities. Climate change will make both more difficult.
Yes, the Alaskan Malamute has had its own struggles, World War II took a massive toll on the breed as it did many others. But we cannot let ourselves be deluded by the false histories and mythologizing pushed by the breed club, the kennel club because at their base they are clubs ruled by the west and the west alone. Our breed went to Antarctica successfully where many breeds did not, but somehow that wasn’t enough for the people in charge. They will flush and turn their heads away when you fact check their made up delusion. They will claim the breed is SO different than the other indigenous freight dogs that they HAD to create a new breed while at the same time saying “wow this breed is ancient!”. Is the 1930s ancient? Why must we sell this lie? Where does it fucking stop.
#dogblr#alaskan malamute#indigneous peoples day#I had to smack a poster on the Alaskan malamute subreddit#for making an indigneous peoples day post that still attributed the breed to god and not Amman#they just aren’t the dog YOU think they bred for purpose#they are still breeding them for purpose#they aren’t breeding malamutes#these aren’t random village dogs people bred them for a purpose!!#please note that i say this as a lover of the AM breed in general#our history is cool but it does not HAVE to be stolen to be so#it is perfectly acceptable on its own truth

You know what it's time for?
WEIRD SHARKS THAT'S WHAT IT'S TIME FOR
(IDs are in the image descriptions)
Pocket Shark
Pocket sharks are named for two small pocket glands appearing behind their pectoral fins. These glands are theorized to be luminous. Pocket sharks look like tiny, tiny sperm whales.
Angular Roughshark
Also called the pig-faced shark or the pig fish, angular roughsharks grow to be about 3 feet 4 in long on average. I personally think they're more bat-faced.
Goblin Shark
Found in the deep sea, goblin sharks are known for being able to extend their jaws like a grabber tool made of teeth. Wikipedia says that these sharks' "flabby bodies" suggest that they are sluggish in nature.
Cookiecutter Shark
The cookiecutter shark only grows to about 20 inches in length, but that doesn't stop it from biting into orcas, great whites, or humans. It suctions onto its meal with its lips and then goes to town. It removes perfect circles of flesh, hence its name.
Wobeggong Shark
Wobeggong refers to twelve species of carpet shark, so-named for their resemblance to a shag rug. They dwell on the bottom of the sea floor and wait for smaller fish to swim nearby.
Swell Shark
Swell sharks like to hide in crevices of algae-covered rocks, waiting for prey to swim by. They are so named not because they're really swell (though they are) but because as a defense mechanism, they can swell up to double their size by swallowing sea water.
Greenland Shark
The Greenland shark has high concentrations of urea in its body. It is theorized to have a lifespan of 250 to 500 years, and it can grow up to 23 feet long. Greenland sharks have been found with moose and reindeer in their stomachs. Because of the shark's toxic levels of urea, its flesh must be fermented or otherwise treated before consumption.
Viper Dogfish
Like the goblin shark, the viper dogfish's jaws can protude from the rest of its head, though its coloring means the viper dogfish looks significantly more Xenomorphish when doing so. This small shark is a member of the lanternshark family, and its underside glows.
Pointy-Nosed Blue Chimaera
Also know as the abyssal ghostshark, this deep sea shark has a venomous spine on its dorsal fin used for defense.
Genie's Dogfish Shark
Genie's dogfish shark is a small species found in the gulf of Mexico and the west Atlantic Ocean. It has real life anime eyes.
Ninja Lanternshark
The ninja lanternshark is a small bioluminescent shark. It is all black except for white markings around its eyes and mouth. It reaches about a foot and a half in length.
Frilled Shark
The frilled shark is sometimes called a living fossil, as it is basically unchanged in the past 80 million years. They are named for their teeth, which each have three points.
Epaulette Shark
Epaulette sharks are named for the large spots behind their pectoral fins. These sharks frequently visit tidal pools and have adapted to long periods of oxygen deprivation by shutting down non-essential neural functions. Epaulette sharks often "walk" with their fins on the sea floor rather than swim.
Horn Shark
Similar to the epaulette sharks, horn sharks like to walk on the sea floor with their fins. However, these sharks have sharp spines to deter predators.
This Ridiculousness
A prehistoric shark, helicoprion lived 20 million years ago and was apparently part buzzsaw. A fossil unearthed in Idaho in 2014 showed that these sharks had no teeth in their upper jaw, and a whorl of teeth in their lower jaw. It's a shame Junji Ito wasn't introduced to this shark during the writing of Uzumaki.

The Most Interesting Man In The World.
That's Peter Freuchen and his wife Dagmar Freuchen-Gale, in a photo taken by Irving Penn (1947). Freuchen is a top candidate for the Most Interesting Man in the World. Standing six feet seven inches, Freuchen was an arctic explorer, journalist, author, and anthropologist. He participated in several arctic journeys (including a 1000-mile dogsled trip across Greenland), starred in an Oscar-winning film, wrote more than a dozen books (novels and nonfiction, including his Famous Book of the Eskimos), had a peg leg (he lost his leg to frostbite in 1926; he amputated his gangrenous toes himself), was involved in the Danish resistance against Germany, was imprisoned and sentenced to death by the Nazis before escaping to Sweden, studied to be a doctor at university, his first wife was Inuit and his second was a Danish margarine heiress, became friends with Jean Harlow and Mae West, once escaped from a blizzard shelter by cutting his way out of it with a knife fashioned from his own feces, and, last but certainly not least, won $64,000 on The $64,000 Question.
