(TO DELETE LATER) ~ My Seasonal Reminder for everyone, now that we are in Pride Month and many people are gonna be sharing Santa Muerte statues with rainbow colors to sell you stuff and books, that this book is a whole offense to Brujas and Bipoc authors everywhere.
It is not a Mexican Author "elder" behind this book, but a British white privileged woman and her American white man friend who is so arrogant to call himself "the biggest authority on La Santa Muerte" who wrote this.
And no editor, no publisher via email, and not pathetic soulless white bullies without understanding of Hispanic Culture, and definitely not white cis straight man with a blog gonna make me stop saying it ✌🏼
Not especially white bloggers offering money via DM to silence me.
Not care how many reviews you buy on AMZN this is a work without heart just make it to take the money from Bipoc readers looking to fool everyone.
This is a literal act of cowardice and black facing.
This work is a total offense to real devotees of La Santa Muerte.
PS: I appreciate a real devote of La Santa Muerte took the time to read the book and make a decent review with perspective, not another Instagram influencer who Just make a video to sell you the book they didn't even read 👎🏽

Queering the Runes: Reclaiming Ancestral Wisdom in Rune Magic and Mythology by Siri Vincent Plouff is a new edition to my library. I think this is a great, different perspective on the runes. I can't wait to put this to use. I pick runes twice a year amongst other oracles on the equinoxes. Thank you to Weiser Books for sending it my way.
"Queering the Runes is a contemporary, inclusive, and forward-thinking approach to the runes that focuses on finding queer experience, life, and joy in the Elder Futhark. Siri comes to the runes as a queer, nonbinary reader, and presents a path for reclaiming the ancestral wisdom and mystery of the runes in a way that can provide insight and understanding of their sacred nature for masculine, feminine, and nongendered aspects of self. Written as a love letter to the runes, the gods, and the people who follow the Nordic path, Queering the Runes presents an alternative approach to the runes—one that creates a gentle container for those who want to follow this heathen path."

On this day:
VOYNICH MANUSCRIPT: MOST MYSTERIOUS MANUSCRIPT IN THE WORLD
On August 19, 1666, the rector of Prague University sent a letter and a manuscript to one of his former students, the Jesuit scholar Athanasius Kircher. The manuscript had lain forgotten in the monastery library in Frascati, Italy, for 250 years. It was obtained by Wilfred Voynich in 1912 and went on to be dubbed "the Most Mysterious Manuscript in the World."
Christened the Voynich, the six-by-nine-inch parchment codex appears to be a straightforward book. It is, however, over two hundred pages written in a code or unknown language that has never been deciphered. The text is elaborately illustrated with colored drawings of unknown plants and the sun, moon, and stars. Depictions of tiny naked women also frolic over the pages.
First appearing in history in 1586, the book was purchased for a then-outrageous sum of 600 ducats by the Holy Roman emperor, Rudolf II of Bohemia. One of the most eccentric European monarchs of the era, Rudolf collected dwarfs, had a regiment of giants in his army, and entertained all manner of magicians and alchemists. It has been suggested that the Voynich manuscript is the work of Roger Bacon, a famous English monk and scientist, and that it made its way to Prague via John Dee, a famous occultist of the time.
From dating of the vellum, pigments, calligraphy, and drawings, the manuscript is judged to be from the late thirteenth century. It has been labeled as everything from an illustrated herbal, to an alchemical treatise written in code to protect the contents, to an elaborate hoax. Its contents are roughly thought to be divided into sections of astronomy/astrology, biology, cosmology, pharmaceuticals, and recipes. After Voynich's widow died, the manuscript was sold to a book dealer and then donated to Yale University.

There is a language so beautiful that it is never spoken. There is a deep sort of silence that may never adequately fall into words. That, I tell you, is more valuable than any jewel or any diamond.

Molly Wessely in Die Rose von Stambul
flickr
Molly Wessely in Die Rose von Stambul by Truus, Bob & Jan too! Via Flickr: Vintage German postcard. Photochemie, K.2003. Photo by Riess. 'Die Rose von Stambul' (1916, The Rose of Stamboul) is an operetta in three acts by Austrian composer Leo Fall with a libretto by Julius Brammer and Alfred Grünwald. The work premiered on 2 December 1916 at the Theater an der Wien in Vienna. It was conducted by the composer and starred Hubert Marischka, Betty Fischer, Louise Kartousch and Ernst Tautenhayn. There were 422 performances. In 1917 Molly Wessely performed in the operetta in Berlin, together with Eugen Rex. The story centres around Achmed Bey, a young Turkish man who wishes to reform Turkish society. Not wanting to embarrass his politician father, Bey publishes his reform plans in French under the pseudonym "André Léry". The book becomes a bestseller among Turkish women. Later, a marriage is arranged between Achmed Bey and Kondja Gül. On their wedding night, however, Gül confesses to her husband that she can never love him, as she has fallen in love with the author André Léry. The silent German film Die Rose von Stambul/The Rose of Stamboul (Felix Basch, Arthur Wellin, 1919) was based on the operetta. Stars were the popular Viennese soprano Fritzi Massary as Kondja Gül and Felix Basch as Achmed Bey. In 1953, a musical film followed, also called Die Rose von Stambul/The Rose of Stamboul (Karl Anton, 1953) with Inge Egger, Albert Lieven, Laya Raki, Grethe Weiser and Paul Hörbiger. Molly Wessely (also Molly Wesely; * 29 October 1889 as Margarete Franziska Veselý in Berlin; † 10 May 1963 in Berlin) was a German actress and operetta singer.

Mexican Magic: Brujeria, Spells, and Rituals for All Occasions Mexican Magic: Brujeria, Spells, and Rituals for All Occasions Contributor(s): Davila, Laura (Author) ISBN: 9781578638321 Binding: Paperback Pub Date: November 04, 2024 Author: Laura Davila Physical Info: 0.64" H x 8.97" L x 6.09" W (0.62 lbs) 224 pages Publisher: Weiser Books Mexican Magic shares spells and recipes deeply rooted in Mexican folk beliefs and magic. "Some are born with a star, while others are born starry." This dicho (saying) refers to the Mexican belief that good luck is a matter of fate--something you are born with or not. Mexicans traditionally attribute their good or bad luck to a greater force, to God's will, even to the stars in the sky. Being born with a star is a blessing. While some gain their luck through fate, Laura Davila believes even more in faith, virtue, and purpose. Some people are born with a natural gift for magic, but many others are compelled toward magic by life experience. The best brujos and magical people are not those who necessarily started off in perfect circumstances but those who looked at magic as a skill to be mastered. Mexican Magic offers an overview of magic and spells from across Mexico for daily use. Although the book's spells may be practiced by anyone, they are deeply rooted in Mexican folk beliefs and magic. Featuring magical recipes, spells, tips, and advice for a wide variety of intentions, including love, lust, sex, good luck, money, protection, commerce, gambling, justice, pregnancy, travel, education, and more, Mexican Magic also offers direction on how to be a magical person and live a magical life. Biographical Note: Laura Davila is a fifth-generation Mexican witch, a long-time practitioner of Mexican ensalmeria, hechicería, brujeria, and folk Catholicism. Born and raised in Mexico, Laura has lived in the United States since 2010. Laura identifies as a bruja de rancho--a "ranch witch"--a term with great resonance in Mexico, indicating knowledge of botanicals and the natural world. The author of Mexican Sorcery, Laura is also a tarot card reader and a flower essence practitioner.

On this day: BETTY AND BARNEY HILL On September 19, 1961, Betty and Barney Hill were driving on an isolated New Hampshire road around midnight when they noticed a light moving erratically through the sky. Seven hours later they were home. The trip normally took less than five hours. At first they had no memory of the lost time, but then alien nightmares began to haunt their sleep and unexplained marks began to appear on their bodies. Eventually they sought the help of a noted Boston psychiatrist to regain their memory of the missing time. Returning home from Canada on U.S. Route 3, they reached the White Mountains, and the light appeared to be running parallel to the car. Abruptly, it appeared directly in their path. Barney got out of the car to look at it through binoculars. He saw a row of windows with figures moving around behind them. Suddenly overcome with a fear of capture, Barney dashed back into the car and sped away. Curious vibrating noises followed the car, and Barney and Betty felt very sleepy. Later, they became conscious thirty-five miles south of where they last remembered being, and their watches had stopped. Anxiety over the lost two hours began to rule their lives. What unfolded, under hypnosis, was a sensational account of alien abduction and medical examination. A group of uniformed men surrounded the Hills, taking them from their car and to a saucer-shaped craft. Samples of the Hills' hair, fingernails, and skin were taken. The leader assured the Hills of their safety. And when Betty asked where they were from, he led her to a "star map." Later, under post-hypnotic suggestion, she drew the map, which appeared meaningless at the time. Several years later new astronomical information revealed a star cluster, near Zeta Reticuli, which rendered Betty's map amazingly accurate. Text from: Almanac of the Infamous, the Incredible, and the Ignored by Juanita Rose Violins, published by Weiser Books, 2009
