My first time doing clasped weft technique! It's slow but so so striking! It has unsquared my overshot but I'm treating that as a feature this time.
You throw the shuttle in from one side, loop it round your second yarn and throw it back through the same shed to pull the second yarn into the cloth....
.... And then you beat very very slowly and carefully while pulling on each yarn to get the colour change exactly where you want it, and then you carry on and admire/curse your result. It's an absolute bastard to unweave.
For these colours I am making a zigzag between them, but for my next pair of colours (blue and orange) I will do something else.

In my previous post, I talked about the stacked stitch technique and said the idea came from warp knit textiles. I promised to tell you more about these knits so here's some info.
The terms warp and weft come from weaving where they are used to describe vertical and horizontal threads respectively (image 2). As hand knitters, we don't generally use these words in relation to our craft, but they correspond to the 2 primary methods of knit fabric production. In hand knitting and on home machines, yarns travel back and forth across each row horizontally (image 3). This is also called weft knitting.
Warp knitting is a process where yarn travels vertically as the fabric is created (image 4). We, as hobbyists, rarely use this term because it is very tedious to do by hand requiring a knitting loom or a lot of patience. Each needle has its own spool of thread and the width of the fabric is essentially determined by the number of bobbins/spools used. Imagine intarsia, but each color is just one stitch wide. Each thread must constantly zigzag from needle to needle in order to create a sheet of fabric and not a series of disconnected crochet chains. This lateral movement is referred to as "shogging." Threads swing to the front of the needle (overlap) and move one unit to the side then swing behind each needle (underlap) and and move to the side one or more spaces.
Warp knits are known for being sturdier with less elasticity and than weft knits. They can be very dense like stranded colorwork or contain extremely large holes. They do not run or ladder, if a yarn breaks, the fabric will slowly unravel and only a small hole will form.
As in weft knitting, many different textures and colorwork effects can be created using only a few, basic stitches. Tulle, athletic mesh, and flame stitch (image 1) textiles are all manufactured using warp knitting machines.
The cover photo belongs to the @vamuseum and shows a silk shawl from c.1850. I made the illustrations from scratch and I'm very proud of them, please share them so lots of people see them.

donut breakfast + 5 hours of weaving class with a very kind chatty instructor who gave me excellent advice and was fun to hang out with + late lunch of fast food burger with extra fried onions + took a long nap on 🌸, forcing them to be cozy in bed with a book instead of working + now i write more fan fictions and roast some chicken thighs which i will eat for dinner with mashed potatoes
#box opener#at some point i will get natural light photos of the placemats i wove#they're like. okay. the weft is cotton fabric strips for practical thing-a-beginner-can-finish-in-one-class reasons#and i didnt get to choose the warp color so im not like in love with it#but the fabric has a good drape/closeness for placemats & they are the same size and both genuinely pretty rectangular#so i think that overall that is a good outcome for my first time weaving anything and i am both pleased#and affirmed that it was in fact a good idea to go to a class#classes are useful.#now im exhausted bc that was the first thing ive done in five days#but that is what girlfriend nap is for ^_^

Because I’m pathologically incapable of sticking to one thing, my first weaving on my home floor loom!
IMAGE ID: A photograph of a weaving uin progress on a floor loom. The warp is black cotton, the first section of weaving is plain weave with a brown weft and the second section is a large herringbone with an off white weft. END ID.

Trying tablet weaving again!! The first repetition sucks badly but the second looks so much better yay!
#I'm still terrible at making the weft tension works but eh it takes practice#i already improved from repetition one to two so#also god i love how these colors work together#I've used two bland normal cotton together with a very lucid and shiny one and that contrast is so good#tablet weaving#weaving

I finished my latest batch of weaving last night, and have it up in my shop now! Two hand woven bookmarks, and one keychain, all with light blue and dark blue stripes, and a supplementary weft pattern in silvery thread with zigzags and diamond shapes. $10 each, plus shipping.

This warp has been on my loom since 2016 (it then went into storage for years). Using it up by playing with techniques - I'm liking how clasped weft works and wondering whether it would result in a basket weave appearance if I were to double the warp... Think I know what the next play session with my sampleit loom might be!

unfortunately despite the fact that i have "too much" yarn in the sense that at my limited knitting pace it would take me years if not decades to get through it, i don't have much of it in woven scarf quantities. or rather, i have lots and lots of skeins of (mostly sock) yarn that could provide either warp or weft but not quite enough for both, and don't really go together at all colorwise
#vexing.#things i have in quantity i mostly would still rather knit than weave at least right now#im not actually against buying more yarn to weave with esp since this experience suggests i could get a couple cones of single-color wool#and get rid of a lot of sock yarn as weft in itself or for pattern weft#however. right now it is right now. and i want to start winding a warp.#i may post photos of my current frontrunners and explain my deliberations at length#i know i post a lot more about my Process and also my immense perseverations than most people who blog about handicrafts#and i feel a need to explain that it's not that im actually so dependent and indecisive that i can't if needed make my own yarn choices#i just love to make posts on my blog. and thoughts about yarn activities tend to rank highly in my personal criteria for posts.#box opener

#this pic is from the other day cause i forgot to take another hehe#i actually had to fully redo the warp on this one because of a couple problem yarns and tension issues so this is after the rework :')#weaving tag#my art#unbeweavable#deciding if i want to commit to this crime of a tag ehehe#also next project i want do a v cowl its one continuous weave!! its really cool snd i can do it with plain weave!#might also play around with clasped wefts as my other option for my next project 🤔 much to consider
