hello! i know you haven't posted here in a while, but new stevetony dynamic just dropped!

idk if you've heard of the new ultimate universe (mostly unrelated to the original one), but ultimates #1 (the avengers-aligned title) came out yesterday, and it features a teenage tony with daddy issues, a freshly-defrosted steve with a revolutionary streak, and a bit of longing/envy for earth-616 as "what they could've/should've been"

it's a very new universe (there's been less than 20 cumulative issue published so far), so you can easily read everything (i have a reading order here), but if you only want steve and tony's story, it's just ultimate invasion #1-4 > ultimate universe #1 > the ultimates #1 > the second story in 'free comic book day 2024: ultimate universe/spider-man' (though this one was more of a sneak peek and might be set after/during a later ultimates issue, it's the obligatory confusing one lol)

Thank you so much for the rec and reading orders! 💕 I am in fact back on my superhero bullshit since Free Comic Book Day (though for me that's mostly just involved acquiring an armful of completely random issues of various things, and rewatching Avengers Assemble episodes). I probably even saw that ultimate comic at my local comic shop on that day, but ignored it due to my unwarranted bias against anything related to the Ultimates 😅 But maybe I'll go back and give it a fairer shake.

My heart absolutely yearns to revive this blog, but I still feel like I don't have anything worthy of posting yet. But I did spend the other day shaking @ahsokaisawesome by the shoulders and frantically detailing a AA/MCU crossover fic treatment at her, so I know the embers of my multiverse love are still smouldering.

outside of the fact that MY CHILDREN ARE TOGETHER AGAIN, i really like the changes hickman's made to the mythos. more than the characterisation of pete and mj, it's jjj i love in this.

jonah and ben working together's a nice touch, and ties nicely into the idea that og jonah gave pete a job partly because of the impact of ben's death on pete.

the "PARKER! PARKEEEEEER! oh hi pete" panels were a nice bit of humour, not too OTT. the fact that - outside of his vendetta against spider-man - og jonah is good at his job and has historically been on the side of minorities and civil rights comes through in jjj's reaction to events, as well as the conversation he has with ben.

and speaking of ben, i feel like 616 ben is mythologised a touch at times, so it's interesting to see hickman's take on a living ben parker who's had a whole lifetime with both may and pete, and how that would have informed his personality and his relationship with pete (and by extension, pete himself). it'd be interesting to know what the impetus for peter growing out of being an obnoxious, arrogant little shit as a teen into a well-rounded human being was, given the lack of ben dying and the lack of spider bite as a teen.

*slams this comic down and yells about it* It's not that feelings are wrong, it's that they are Level 100 Space Psychics whose emotions are the foundation of their connection to the energy field that gives them those abilities. A Jedi can literally crush someone's windpipe with their mind. A Jedi can move so fast a regular person could never keep up with them, they could slice right through you before you could do more than twitch. A Jedi is placed in a position where lives are going to depend on how well they can handle a crisis. Feelings are normal, natural, and the Jedi have never said to suppress them. But instead that control is vital and this is exactly why--because using the Force through anger and fear is the dark side, that's literally what the Force is, your emotions. Jedi have to have higher standards than most people because otherwise people will die. Qui-Gon is not the first to say this (off the top of my head, I remember instances of Obi-Wan saying it in The Clone Wars, I remember Depa saying it in the Kanan comics, this is basically what Yoda was talking about in ESB) because this is what the Jedi teach and live by. Check yourself before you wreck yourself, because wrecking yourself is going to get a lot of people hurt.

moon knight: fist of khonshu #0 spoilers

and soz, the images were taken with my phone bc i don't have a physical copy and the digital copy i have can only be read in an app and won't allow screenshots, like, fuck you too.

"yawning void". i desperately love the way this hearkens back to older runs and the way that marc has tried again and again and again to not rely on violence, to not be violent and for it to repeatedly come back round to feeling like it's the only thing he knows and the only thing he knows how to be.

and here's khonshu all but going "yeah, i won't allow for anything else in my service".

"where did he learn compassion? it was not from me." absolutely love this, especially with the panels breaking down marc/jake/steven later into the different aspects of khonshu. it absolutely shows what khonshu expects from moon knight (and marc specifically, i think), and reflects how he's treated him - how he's always treated him.

i just fucking love how jed is setting it out in transparent words that this is who moon knight is. he's truly taken what doug moench laid out in the 80s and updated it but still kept it in line with the original envisioning of moon knight, of steven, and jake, and marc.

like, fucking thank you, jed.

the tumultuous, difficult relationship that marc - and moon knight as a whole - has with khonshu, that khonshu has with moon knight. obvs it's khonshu's perspective so it overlooks (deliberately) the ways that khonshu has failed marc/steven/jake. it all but spells out the difficult relationship that marc had with his father - elias - the way that they butted heads, the way that they were estranged, but the way that, in the end, elias still reached out for marc in spite of everything, and the way that marc didn't want to, but he still went to see his father, even if he was too late.

it's not perfect, and khonshu's a piece of shit, but the layers to the relationship and the dynamic are just chef's kiss, and i love the fact that jed gets it.
