Off-White is making a comeback! I'm thrilled to reveal that Venrin (@Venrinn on twitter) and I have joined forces to resurrect our old webcomic. 🐺
The pages will be posted on Webtoon. We've rewritten the story—it starts like the original but takes an entirely new direction. Some characters stick around, while others didn't make the cut to make room for fresh faces. We'll be dusting off the old artwork and adding plenty of new one. Stay tuned as we unveil the release date very soon!
But wait, there's more! Between now and the premiere of the first chapters, we've got a fun, little surprise coming your way on ✨May 7th✨
Got any questions? Ask away in the comments! 🐺

☆ What is a pettirossi? Is it something you can eat or what
It's a pun about petti-rossi translating to red chests (red=rossi, chests=petti) and the italian name for robin (the bird!!!). We needed a gang name that sounded bloody and cool but not edgy.....
☆ Do you take requests?
You can hope to 'lady macbeth' me enough to make me think it was my own idea to draw something
☆ Why haven't you replied to my ask? :(
I either forgor OR your ask had a compliment in it and I'm safekeeping it in my askbox so that I have something nice to look at when I get sad
There are chances I go back to older asks so don't lose hope.....

hi!! do you have any tips for anybody who wants to create a webcomic?
hope you’re doing well! :3
Well if you want to make a comic you probably already have an idea in mind so go ahead and make that one ;)
It’s usually good advice to make a shorter comic first but just jump in and make any comic you want. 👍
I recommend making a collection or mood board consisting of other comics you really like so you can examine them and see how each artists handles transitions, speech bubble placement, framing etc. it can give you a lot of ideas and inspiration.
Another fun thing is to try doing some ‘test’ pages. If it’s not ‘the official comic’ in your mind then it might encourage you to experiment a bit and you can figure out how you want to do the colors and lineart and such.
Random tips that come to mind:
-don’t get stuck doing only ‘close up shots’ it’s a good idea to have at least one panel on each page (or at least every 5 panels) that is zoomed out a bit so you can see a full shot of your characters and some background.
-if the scene changes to a new area it’s a good idea to start with an establishing shot with a big background image that shows off the new area.
-don’t avoid the things you’re bad at drawing. Purposely write your weaknesses into the story so you can get better at drawing them.
-pay attention to the kind of angles you’re drawing your characters at. If you notice you’re only drawing a front or side view it can be fun to try more dynamic shots like one from overhead or one from below.
-readability is important so make sure you pick a font that’s easy to read and make sure the text isn’t too small. (Try comparing the size and readability to other well known comics to give yourself a reference.)
-use references a lot and as much as you can. It might seem like the effort of finding a reference picture will make the drawing process longer but I find that it speeds up my drawing process A LOT. I’ll struggle to draw a hand from memory and keep deleting it but as soon as I just take a pic of my own hand to look at I’ll have it drawn in 30 seconds lol.
-don’t stress over anything I’ve said here and just have fun drawing. At the end of the day, all that matters is that you’re making comics because that’s the only way to get better at them 👍

On Fighting Nothing - Ultimate Dirk in the Struggle Against The End of Homestuck
[ Edited Excerpt from Through Loving Eyes--Who Is(n't) Dirk Strider?]
You and I have been through this, have been through that, have been at ease. Nothing scares me more than God, and Nothing cannot sustain.
Let's consider this verse from the Homestuck: Beyond Canon album song, The Leaving, as it might relate to the Epilogue's Ultimate Dirk Strider and the nature of his character arc.
It’s a well known fact from the days of Bladekindeyewear (who’s back and occasionally liveblogging HS² on Tumblr, if you’re interested) that The Neverending Story is a major source of thematic inspiration for Homestuck, with the twin ouroboros symbol from the movie appearing in several places in the comic connected to Cherub lore, including their mating rituals, which are said to tap into the innermost essences of Paradox Space.
If you don’t remember the Neverending Story, its a book/movie about the magic realm of Fantastica, an infinite realm of fantasy and wonder living inside an in-fiction book also named the Neverending Story, which is experienced by all who read it. Our protagonist Bastian reads the book, and inside lives a story where the protagonist Atreyu is sent on a quest to try to overcome the threat of the mysterious force called the Nothing, which is bent on consuming the entire fictional world.
The Nothing of the Leaving, then, is a literary reference. What scares Dirk more than God is not “nothing” in the sense that he’s unafraid of God, but instead the specific darkness of non-existence that overtakes the realm of Fantastica, obliterating it completely, reducing it so utterly that there’s not even dust left behind.
And what turns out to be the source of the Nothing in the Neverending Story?
The inevitable apocalypse that comes for all stories: The thump of the cover as you turn the last page. The moment when a living narrative passes from the reader’s experience and turns into an immediately fading memory. Whether it happens quickly or slowly, everyone who’s loved any story eventually moves on.
And that is precisely the armageddon that has struck Earth C at the beginning of the Epilogues. Seven years out from the end of the comic, it is a world almost entirely forgotten, populated by people that we almost don’t even recognize as the characters we loved.
Dirk and his friends struggled through the entire labyrinthine nightmare that is the plot of the webcomic Homestuck to reach their happy ending, and almost as soon as they got there, nearly the entire community of readers that shared the journey with them abandoned them and moved on.
One world burned up in fire (Beta Earth). One world silenced by psychic death scream (Alternia). One world drowned and boiled under water (Alpha Earth). And now? A fourth world, Earth C, doomed to death by simply being forgotten, extinguished in its cradle because it wasn’t loved enough. Gone not with a bang, but with a whisper.
That is the nature of Homestuck’s fourth and (so far) final apocalypse.
youtube
And striving against that fate, watching all of their friends and loved ones succumb to the dark like a beloved horse…we have Rose Lalonde and Dirk Strider. Our platonic (in the literal sense) Adam and Eve at the end of the world. So what else is there for them to do, except to bite the apple?
To Ascend, though it is terrible.
THE LION EATING THE SUN — THE FLAME OF SCORPIO
The only way to fight against Darkness is to Light it with a torch, and the ultimate torch is the Sun. Yaldabaoth, the denizen with the symbol of Light placed upon its head, is also the denizen shared by Caliborn and Dirk. Mythologically, Yaldabaoth is a satanic Demiurge or creator God, analogous to the God of Biblical scripture but either flawed or evil, depending on who’s talking about him.
Caliborn, who goes on to dominate the plot of Homestuck to the point of being responsible for the existence of the Alpha Timeline, and thus the plot of Homestuck itself, is decidedly the evil variety of Demiurge, ruling over the rest of the cast of Homestuck through brutality and death and reveling in every drop of the blood he spills.
And let’s make no mistake: Dirk, already consumed by the process of ascending to Ultimate Self, carries with him the risk of advancing and carrying on Caliborn’s legacy.
Lord English, Doc Scratch, the Soul-infested version of Lil Cal — all three of these entities carry Dirk’s Soul inside them, and so they can potentially count as splinters. And all three excel at manipulating and controlling unaware parties into carrying out their goals, such as Lil Cal corrupting Bro’s training of Dave, or Doc Scratch exploiting and weaponizing Vriska.
In the roiling oceans of Dirk’s ultimate self, how can we really tell who is the puppet and who is the puppeteer? We can’t. But we can tell that so far, Ultimate Dirk doesn’t exactly operate the way Caliborn did. Like the Demiurge in Timaeus’ Testimony, he insists on at least a veneer of nobility, even if he’s flawed or imperfect at it, claiming he’s only doing what needs to be done. And notably, Dirk doesn’t physically hurt a single person throughout the Epilogues.
It’s under this logic that he chooses to take on the role of antagonist, deliberately raising the stakes of his reality high enough to kick the story of Homestuck back into motion. He does this while actively knowing he’s signing up to be executed, preferably by Dave in his opinion, but certainly by someone else otherwise — Kanaya being another likely contender.
Either way, it makes the entire antagonistic enterprise one long suicide attempt on his part. Dirk may not have given up on Homestuck’s future, but in deciding to be willing to fight for it, he has given up on his own life.
youtube
It is, in essence if not intentionally, the bargain of the Flame Of Scorpio.
“The Scorpion killed other bugs and ate them. Then one day, the weasel found him. The scorpion fled, and fell into a deep well. He thought to himself: ‘How long have I eaten other creatures? And yet, the one time that I was the prey, I fled in utter terror. And look what came of that. I’ll die in this well, alone. I could have given the weasel another day of life with my sacrifice. But now my death will help no one. I’m useless. Dear Lord, I beg of you, look into my Heart and hear my prayer. In my next life, don’t let me waste myself. Let me use my body for the true happiness of everyone in the world. And then the scorpion burst into flame. A brilliant crimson glow. And by the light of his burning body, he lit up the night forever.’
— Night on the Galactic Railroad
It’s a covenant with God, a kind of magic whereby a scorpion — an entity that hurts and consumes by its nature, a Natural Antagonist, if you will — sacrifices itself to light up the night sky. A sacrifice that is depicted in 2011’s Mawaru Penguindrum’s homage to Night on the Galactic Railroad beautifully succintly with the act of…
Tearing one's heart out.
You sent me FIRE. FIRE, I’ll tear my throat out. Burn my blackened lips. You gave me FIRE!
Fire, I’ll tear my Heart out. I’d rather tear my Heart out... But I can’t stay here! --The Leaving, Homestuck Beyond Canon
If this seems familiar conceptually, it might be because it's a very similar logic to the one adopted by Vriska Serket in the original Homestuck comic, who adamantly believed that since she’s taken so many lives, she can only justify her existence by Rising Up and defeating Lord English for the benefit of everyone in Homestuck.
Vriska throws herself into the role of Hero/Protagonist, while Dirk throws himself into the role of Villain/Antagonist, but they do so with the same kind of fanatic quasi-religious zeal: That by embracing their own sharper features and committing to sacrificing for the greater good, they can make things better for everybody else.
And so Dirk commits his biggest and most obvious gesture of antagonism: He kidnaps Rose Lalonde, taking her with him on his journey to start a new session. In the process he moves her soul into a (frankly sickass) robot that he claims can withstand the infinite processing power necessary to hold her Ultimate Self, which her physical body can’t sustain.
While whether or not that’s true remains to be seen, this move has been deemed highly unpopular by the fandom, to say the least. Yet there’s a logic to why he had to do it. If Dirk had said fuck it, taken his ball and fucked off the planet on his own, what would’ve happened?
His friends and the fandom would’ve collectively gone “Weird move, but go off I guess?” and collectively moved on without a second thought. Dirk simply doesn’t carry the emotional weight to carry an entire narrative with the question of whether or not he gets a happy ending. He just has the sort of personality that inclines us to go “Probably not, but oh well. Sort of the dude’s own fault anyway.”
But Rose? Everybody loves Rose. Everybody fucking loves Rosemary! There’s nothing the Homestuck fandom wants more in the world than for those two girls to be happy together. If Rose isn’t okay, we’re not okay, and that’s exactly what Dirk needs: Something to be so wrong in the world that we can’t help but keep watching, in the hopes that eventually, someday, it will be set right again.
Rose is the very Sun Dirk has stolen in the process of making a Narrator-Demiurge of himself. She is the guiding Star that leads to the future, the very Light of Homestuck.
And look, Dirk gets a lot of flack for the whole Rose-snatching thing, but let’s put something into perspective here. In the epilogues, Rose is dying, or suffering so much she may as well be dying. Dirk may or may not be exploiting or undermining Rose’s agency, but his Rosebot innovation for her does end her immediate excruciating pain.
Ultimately, Rosebot agrees with Dirk about taking this course of action, deliberately thanking him for taking her with him and expressing her own feelings on the importance of their cause before Dirk succumbs to his temptation to eke out a hollow victory over his loneliness by using his narrative powers to encourage her eagerness.
While there are secrets being kept and the power dynamic is unbalanced, Dirk and Rose are not abuser and victim in this venture — they are co-conspirators. Remember that Rose, too, has a role to play.
If Dirk is the dragon, the damnable villain, then she is the princess in the tower, the damsel in distress. It’s in both of their mutual interests for her to play to an attitude of relative innocence and ignorance for the audience’s benefit.
The better to keep us watching.

I wrote a theory for the webcomic The Glass Scientists almost 2 weeks ago. Originally posted in the Disqus comment section underneath last week's update. Before another new page drops on Monday, I figured I might want to share it here on Tumblr, too! If only for my own satisfaction in archiving.
Some small parts aren't quite relevant anymore, I think, but we'll see whether the conclusions hold up, soon. My best guess would be within the next update or two. In the meantime, enjoy!
*******
THEORY TIME!!
I’ve stayed awake one night early last week thinking about what Jekyll could possibly be planning, thoughts swirling. And I think I figured out a solid possibility. Before I get to that, though, I first want to lay down ALL the pieces that brought me to my conclusion. Every piece of supporting evidence I could think of is here.
(Warning: this got pretty long.)
EXHIBIT A:
Whatever he’s planning has to deal with all of what he talked about here:
I want to pay particular attention here to Jekyll conflating his own reputation with that of the Society. In his mind, the two are inseparable. And for good reason, but I’m not about to summarize the whole comic’s events. My point is, his plan HAS to save his, and by extension, the Society’s reputation somehow.
And it doesn’t matter WHAT it takes. He was willing to lock Hyde away (for a few weeks, mind) to save the Exhibition and the Society, after all. SOMEONE had to take the fall for the street fire. He didn’t want to have to do this, but he was pushed into a corner.
Now, his first plan, when his form became unstable and the sudden transformations started, was to go to his office and search for a spare potion he missed. But that plan is right out the door, cause he scoured the entire place:
Now he’s pushed into a corner again, with the WHOLE Society at stake. If the public finds out Jekyll’s secret, they’re both ruined.
And now?
Only a matter of time until the world finds out his secret.
Time for EXHIBIT B:
Jekyll’s plan, I think, is unlikely to be an Un-Hyde potion of some sort. He didn’t even know how the original potion worked exactly! And since he doesn’t have any of the old potion left, he probably can’t make a modified version of that either. But, if he still had SOME of the ingredients left, but not all, perhaps he could make a different sort of potion. Perhaps.
But my main point is that I don’t think Jekyll’s plan is a potion to get rid of Hyde. I also think it would be too convenient if he suddenly figured out how to make an Un-Hyde potion that works. On a narrative level, it would be too easy. That’s not his plan. No easy outs for our dear Doctor.
EXHIBIT C:
We know there is going to be a moment that will reflect this chapter’s cover. Sage told us so!
Right here, at the last sentence:
Obviously, it’s not going to be a literal parallel. It’s more about intent, I think. Jekyll is going to do Something, and that Something is NOT going to be good for Hyde. But, and this is key here, it’s not going to be good for Jekyll, either.
They both go down together. I can’t stress this point enough. Jekyll is not planning on coming out of this unscathed. But, remember, his plan HAS to save the Society’s reputation somehow. The world can’t know the truth.
(EDIT: my thoughts on the details of the parallel have evolved since. Now I think it will end up being a lot more literal than I initially thought. See this reply I wrote for more details on that. The key point of this Exhibit remains the same, however.)
EXHIBIT D:
This page feels like Jekyll is saying goodbye, somehow. Not only is he not coming out of this unscathed, I get the strong sense that he’s not planning on coming back at all. Clearly, he doesn’t want to do this. But he feels like he HAS to, for the sake of the Society. He’s resigned to it.
Someone has to take the fall.
Now, you’ve all been reading my reasoning thus far, probably wondering where I’m going with all this. Don’t worry. I only have three exhibits left, and then I will try to bring it all together. Thank you for your patience. I mean it.
EXHIBIT E:
Remember this very interesting bit about how Jekyll and Hyde’s mindscape works?
And a moment later, Hyde’s inner monologue says this:
“Only, I have a funny feeling that, once I went all the way down, I wouldn’t be able to find my way back up again.”
You may or may not already see where I’m going with this. :)
EXHIBIT F:
Remember this tweet by Sage? Since I first saw it a year ago, I’ve never forgotten it.
Now, I’ve seen different people theorize whether this is Hyde or Jekyll in Hyde’s body. Well, I’m going to make THREE (hopefully reasonable) assumptions:
1: This is Hyde, not Jekyll in Hyde’s body.
2: This panel will take place in THIS chapter, the one we’re still in, or early in the next.
3: Hyde’s distraught, despairing expression is caused (at least in part) by whatever Jekyll did. His plan.
(There is one more assumption I could state here, but I’ll save it for later. Keep this panel in the back of your mind for a bit if you want.)
And for the FINAL, EXHIBIT G:
Remember the trick Hyde used to force Jekyll to take control again? Forcing a transformation?
And now, remember THIS PAGE?
It’s probably safe to assume that this, too, works both ways. :)))
And NOW? I’ve run out of exhibits! Well! Well well well!!
(This panel is not relevant, I just wanted to use it. :D for fun!)
(Also, thank you so much to anyone who’s read this far?? Seriously! This thing is way longer than I planned!!)
My theory is that, quite simply, Jekyll is going to sacrifice himself to save the Society. To save his reputation, and thus, the Society’s.
I don’t think he can get rid of Hyde. But he doesn’t have to. He just needs to preserve his secret, because nobody in the overall public can know that Jekyll and Hyde are the same.
And in order to do that, his form needs to be stable. Remember Exhibit A? The big secret is in danger because he keeps transforming back and forth with no volition. Well, he’s got a solution for that.
Jekyll just needs to let Hyde take control. Permanently.
How? By going into the deepest parts of their mindscape, forcing Hyde to be at the front. Never to be seen again, never to return. His secret will disappear with him.
In order to “stabilize” their form, their body, and stop the sudden transformations, Jekyll doesn’t have to get rid of Hyde. He most likely can’t. But he can get rid of himself. He can certainly try, at least.
If Hyde will never stop fighting Jekyll, then he just needs to let him "win."
More than that, he can let Hyde take the fall for his own disappearance. Remember the will Lanyon found?
Lanyon straight up thought Hyde was blackmailing Jekyll because of this!
Picture it. In the public eye, if Jekyll disappears, or thought to have been murdered, and it looks like Hyde’s fault, that’s just unfortunate! Jekyll would simply be an innocent victim! Hell, the public might be inclined to show the Society sympathy because of it.
No secrets revealed, no ruined reputations. Hyde goes to prison, and that’s that. The Society itself is saved. All at the cost of both Jekyll and Hyde. And a good leader would do whatever is necessary…right?
The End.
This is Jekyll’s final, desperate gambit. And that’s my theory.
One final bit. See it as an afterword!
Lanyon seems about to rush in and try to stop Jekyll from whatever he’s doing in the office. But me, I think it’s already too late.
When he runs in there, all he’ll see is Hyde, and, perhaps, a broken mirror.
(That’s the other assumption I’m making about the panel with what’s supposed to be Hyde picking up glass shards. Just picture the drama of it all!!)
AND THAT’S ALL, FOLKS!!! Thank you for reading!!! :DDDDD
I’d love to hear what others think! What did I miss? What do you agree, or disagree, with? Feel free to tell me all of it! I love discussing what might happen next!!
EDIT: There is now an Addendum to this theory where I clarify some things I plain forgot to when I first posted it. PLUS, there's an EXTRA Exhibit I came up with later! Link to the comment here, in case it might get lost in the replies.
*******
That's where the original post ends! I'd like to say one more thing. I already addressed this in the Addendum, but I'd like to state it here too: this is ONLY a theory for what Jekyll's plan is. That was my intent, anyway.
By that I mean, I think this plan would FAIL in reality, in several key ways. Mainly, I think Lanyon and the others are going to intervene before Hyde would actually get arrested. Together, they may work to find a solution to both bring Jekyll back (if he's already deep in the unconscious) AND to keep their secret safe. I have hope they'd figure it out!
I'm also planning to post a more general thematic analysis of the whole comic, soonish. With a particular focus on the character arcs of Jekyll and Hyde. Look out for that! I'm still working it out, but it should be done sometime next week.
After that's done, I'm going to share my theories for how I ACTUALLY think the comic might end. Cause I sure as heck don't think it will end as I described above.
That's all! Thanks for reading!! :DDDDD

Have you ever designed a monster yourself? And what makes good and bad monster design?
Wait I'm not sure how you're familiar with me or from where because designing my own monsters is my main thing! Are there other people who might know of my reviews but somehow miss my original stuff?!
I've made the interactive horror/comedy webcomic "Awful Hospital" for nine years now which is up to over a thousand distinct creature designs if we include all background entities.
I've long exceeded a thousand creatures (not all of them released) for Mortasheen, a monster collecting setting I've developed for now roughly twenty two years which is releasing soon as a tabletop RPG
Outside those two "big" ongoing projects I can barely begin to calculate how many monsters I've drawn. There are hundreds more for miscellaneous comics, jokes, graphics for my website and just random miscellany
That's just "finished" things though. If we go by monsters I've only designed as sketched concepts there's at least one, sometimes a few dozen new unique creatures on every page of my used notebooks, the average has 100 pages and I've filled enough of those in 39 years of living that I think I may have possibly come up with more than one million different creatures?
As for the original question though, a good design is one that someone somewhere loves. There aren't bad designs, but there are designs that aren't to my own taste, sometimes designs that I feel aren't right for their intended purpose, and sometimes designs that were forced by someone else in the chain of command to be less interesting than the artist originally pitched. These things don't make the designs themselves bad, but they are all interesting things to analyze and discuss!
My least favorite thing to see is a setting where every monster is just exactly its most basic trope, the same dragon and zombie and dracula vampire everybody knows, but I think most people agree that's boring. Some settings however just need those classics to be a presence for various reasons. Sometimes it's the whole point, which is fine too!
