Paper-based device generates electricity from moisture in the air for wearable electronics
Over the past decade, wearable electronics—especially those with health care applications—have become increasingly popular, but researchers are still figuring out the best way to power them. Traditional batteries are currently the most popular answer, but they are often too rigid and don't last very long with continuous use. Wireless power transfer techniques offer another solution, but those systems have limited range and are not portable. Binghamton University Professor Seokheun "Sean" Choi, Assistant Professor Anwar Elhadad, Ph.D. '24, and Ph.D. student Yang "Lexi" Gao have developed a new method to pull moisture from the air and turn that water into electricity. In a paper recently published in the journal Small, the Binghamton team outlined their paper-based wearable device that would provide sustained high-efficiency power output through moisture capture.

When are smartwatch companies going to stop pretending we all want a tamagotchi with less cute creatures and more fitness features and start giving us the cool stuff?

I don't want fitness I want gadgets. Besides nobody's trying to hide the fact that their watch is a smartwatch, it's a statement piece so u might as well make it chunky and cool

Hey, what do you think about the concept/ idea of using the human body as a renewable energy in solarpunk?
Hope you're doing good 🍀
Sorry I did not get around to answering this before, I kinda forgot yesterday!
It depends of course of how you would want to implement it. Like, nobody should bike that generator, I would say. But I think that this kind of energy for personal devices is a neat concept.
About 10 years ago I did an internship at a technology museum that at the time just so happened to have a special exhibition on wearables. And while the exhibition mostly had focused on the kinda stuff where you can switch colors and what not via your smart device, they also had some fabrics there, that generated electricity through muscle movement.
Looking into it now, we still are not very effective with the muscle movement tech, but have instead also found a way to generate electricity through body heat. And while this kinda technology is very much still in its infancy, I think it definitely is worth a look. Give it 10 or 20 more years and we could get somewhere.
And it would definitely be an interesting idea to explore within Solarpunk fiction especially. Something I funnily have not seen at all within the genre so far (only have seen wearables within Cybrpunk). So it would definitely be a super fun thing to explore!

Stretchable, wearable device lights up an LED using only the warmth of skin
One of the drawbacks of fitness trackers and other wearable devices is that their batteries eventually run out of juice. But what if in the future, wearable technology could use body heat to power itself? UW researchers have developed a flexible, durable electronic prototype that can harvest energy from body heat and turn it into electricity that can be used to power small electronics, such as batteries, sensors or LEDs. This device is also resilient—it still functions even after being pierced several times and then stretched 2,000 times. The team detailed these prototypes in a paper published Aug. 30 in Advanced Materials. "I had this vision a long time ago," said senior author Mohammad Malakooti, UW assistant professor of mechanical engineering. "When you put this device on your skin, it uses your body heat to directly power an LED. As soon as you put the device on, the LED lights up. This wasn't possible before."

Apple Watch Ultra 2 in Black Titanium
Back in October I went to the Apple Store and bought myself the Apple Watch Ultra now I have had many Apple Watches since the beginning HOWEVER I've been waiting since Apple first announced the Apple Watch Ultra for one specific version Black Titanium.
Tumblr media
When they finally released the Apple Watch Ultra 2 in this sleek finish, I knew I had to get my hands on it. Now, after wearing it for a few weeks, I can confidently say that the wait was more than worth it. I absolutely love it, and I won't be swapping it out anytime soon.
Tumblr media
Design: Black Titanium Elegance
One of the main reasons I held out for the Black Titanium version is its distinctive, understated look. The deep black finish gives the watch a sleek, sophisticated feel that matches almost any outfit or occasion. Whether I'm heading out for a walk with the dog or attending a formal event, the Black Titanium offers that perfect balance of ruggedness and elegance. It’s not too flashy, but it certainly catches the eye of those who appreciate fine design like myself.
The build quality is, as you'd expect from Apple, exceptional. The black titanium feels robust yet lightweight, making it comfortable to wear throughout the day. I also love how it resists scratches, keeping the watch looking fresh and new even after continuous use. The finish isn't just about aesthetics it’s durable.
Performance: Next-Level Features
The Apple Watch Ultra 2 is much more than just a beautiful piece of tech. It’s a powerhouse when it comes to features. From the enhanced brightness of the Retina display to the improved S9 chip, this watch performs like a dream. The always-on display is one of my favourite aspects because it’s so useful in everyday situations, and the Ultra 2 makes it even better with crisp details in all lighting conditions. Whether I'm using it for walks, GPS tracking, or just checking notifications, the responsiveness and smoothness of the watch are noticeable upgrades.
 Battery Life: Unmatched Longevity
Another standout feature of the Apple Watch Ultra 2 is the battery life. I mean I am typing this blog up at 4.05am and I have had it on my wrist since 11.30am and it’s only on 80%. One of the reasons I wanted the Ultra model in the first place was for its extended battery life, and the Ultra 2 does not disappoint. I can easily go days without having to charge it, even with heavy use. This is a game changer for someone like me, who’s always on the go and doesn’t want to be tied down by daily charging.
Tumblr media
After years of being an Apple Watch user, I can confidently say that the Ultra 2 in Black Titanium is by far the best I’ve owned. It's not just a gadget; it feels like a part of my daily routine, enhancing everything from my walks to productivity. And let’s not forget how great it looks on my wrist. It’s stylish enough for any setting, yet tough enough to handle whatever life throws at me.
I won’t be swapping this out anytime soon this is the one.
