I was pleasantly taken back by the serious tone The Trainee's episode 1 ended on. I like that it's a comedy with wacky and interesting characters, but at the heart of it, the tension between Jane and Ryan is very real and mutual.

Jane believes Ryan is not taking his job seriously, which is fair. But he's also not giving him a chance to learn and grow (yet). Ryan fucked around like a headless chicken for the most part, but then got his shit together and delivered the work, albeit too late.

I like that Ryan had the courage to go back and ask Jane why he is displeased with their work. And I like that Jane actually gave him the explanation instead of just shouting at their incompetence. The job they're doing matters in this show!

Pie has the one (1) braincell of the intern team and I already love her and her eyerolls. In short: a good first episode and I am excited to watch more!
