★  —  logan stankoven on what chaos!; august 15, 2024 (x)
[are you gonna brave it on your own? like, now that pavelski is gone – and I do think it is a good question from pete, of just like — just stay in that house. if he wants to go somewhere else, whatever, just stay there until he sells it or something. squatter’s rights. like, are you gonna live on your own this season?] yeah. yeah, I have my own apartment already set up, so — it’s gonna be me, uh, thomas harley and wyatt johnston all staying in the same complex, so, um, it’s nice that we’re all kind of staying near each other.
[who’s the adult in that group?] uh, I’d say harley, harley for sure. even though he’s the oldest, but, uh, yeah. he’s got an old soul.
[what’s the, uh — what’s the stars’ room like? ‘cause one of my favorite things about your group last year was, like, you have stars at basically every age level, of like, NHL experience. like, you and wyatt — awesome. guys in, like, ‘middle’ – quote-unquote middle – age. and then you’ve got the older guys like joe pavelski, tyler seguin. so what’s the dynamic in that room like between everybody at different stages in their career?]
uh, I think it’s really good. um, I mean, all the guys respect each other, which is nice. and like you said, there’s a crop of younger guys, and some older guys who’re veterans and have been around the league for a while, so. I think everyone gets along really well, um — obviously, younger guys hang out a bit more, y’know, with their group, and older guys kinda have their group. um, everyone really respects each other and that’s the main thing.
[you lived with joe pavelski, you and wyatt johnston did. was that incredible or do you feel bad that maybe you had too much fun and made him quit hockey?]
(laughs) no, it was — no, it was awesome. I’m really, really thankful that pav opened up his house to myself and let me stay there, otherwise I would’ve been probably stuck in a hotel, so. um, it was nice to kinda get to know him really well, him and his family, and he had a younger son, so it was fun hanging out with him as well.
[so, I was gonna ask about — like, what always fascinates me about when players stay with older players is, oftentimes the reason why people say this older player will be good for this younger player is ‘cause they’re parents themselves and they have kids, and what that means is — young hockey players end up staying with, like, a family. you’re not, like, just staying with joe pavelski, you’re staying with an entire family. what’s it like being around a family like that? like, I want to say it was … lee stempniak stayed with keith tkachuk and would just, like, play hockey with the kids because he’s like, ‘shit, I’m here, I like hockey, they’re running around, I’m young, I’ll do the same thing.’ what’s it like being around an actual family?]
yeah, it’s a lot of fun. um, I mean, they do — like obviously, pav and his wife did most of the cooking, but, um, me and wyatt were staying there and we try and help as much as we can could but, uh, usually, we were the ones upstairs playing mini-sticks with, uh, the younger son, nate, while they were downstairs cooking meals for us, so. um, it was a good setup, we really enjoyed it.
[two questions — how upset were you when pavs announced he was gonna retire, and number two, are you still gonna be living with him even though he’s not on the team next year?]
um, yeah, it’s sad to see him go, um, such a great career and — I think it was just more tough, like, after the fact, not being able to, uh, you know, get him that cup, I think … he more than anyone anyone deserves it, and, um, was such a great role model for me and wyatt, and, um, yeah. it’s obviously tough on the team, and us for sure, you know, being able to live around him, kinda get to know him pretty well.
[you ever get yelled at? around the house?]
no, no, not at all. he’s, uh, he’s a pretty relaxed guy, so. yeah, we really enjoyed his company.
[didn’t get grounded?] [yeah, what was the weirdest part of — because you were also, I’m sure, you’re trying to acclimate to the team, you’re trying to make a good impression on everybody. like, was there any moment where you were like, ‘shit, I don’t want to, like, make the wrong impression,’ or ‘I don’t want to do the wrong thing here.’ is it intimidating to be in that situation?]
yeah, at first I was really shy, I didn’t really want to, uh … you know, eat too much food at the house, or, um — yeah, just certain things, like, I was pretty quiet, kept to myself. but, uh, you know, as the days went on, I kinda opened up a bit and, you know, we were chatting more and it all worked out well. but at first, you’re pretty intimidated.
[and you’re like, ‘fuck I want this guy to think I’m cool. this guy’s an NHL legend, and this guy's a leader on this team, I want him to think that I’m coming in here and I’m a cool guy.’ but if you’re going in there busting chops, shooting your mouth off, he could be like, ‘cool. you don’t get to live here anymore.’]
yeah. yeah, exactly.

if westeros was created to reflect our modern society instead of being loosely based off of western medieval society, then i think people would understand that these political marriages are for alliances, not love, and would agree that the modern lower class sentiments towards marriage are simply not applicable to these arrangements and both bride and groom cannot and should not expect love from their partner.
if our story occurred in a modern westeros very similar to our own modern society, then a lot of the obstacles our characters face would not happen because, simply put, modern society benefits from equality.
as an example, i am quite (100%) certain that the introduction of gender equality and other modern values and advancements to westeros would only be beneficial to rhaegar and elia, which means that this ideology benefits westerosi society on an individual level.
so, in this modern westeros au, if rhaegar and elia still married for a political alliance, and then had two children like they did in asoiaf, they could then peacefully divorce and write out a contract that secures both rhaenys and aegons inheritances. if lyanna and rhaegar met and fell in love while rhaegar and elia were married then the misunderstanding that sparked a war would never have happened. why? because lyanna would have a say in who she marries in this modern au. also, elia would have possibly been seeing others as well. why? because this was a political marriage and love shouldn’t be expected, so why would anyone be concerned about either party finding love outside of their marriage? plus modern westeros would have dna testing so there’s no reason to question the paternity of their children.
also, if elia had a child with someone else (in this hypothetical scenario, perhaps her lover died) and rhaegar decided to claim that child as his own while knowing that he’s not the real father in order to give this child a better life, then this wouldn’t be a problem either. why? because rhaegar’s in the know. (i’m only bringing this up bc of the rhaenyra and laenor situation. guys… laenor is perfectly aware that biologically those kids aren’t his, yet he still claimed them and loved them bc he and rhaenyra had an agreement. i do not understand why real ppl are even concerned about jace, luke, and joffs parentage. in the eyes of the law those boys are legally laenors.)
however, since asoiaf isn’t based off of our modern society and is instead a society riddled with misogyny, xenophobia and other social issues without the progress and advancements that we in the 21st century have benefited from, i will concede one thing to these antis who harp on and on about how selfish rhaenyra and rhaegar were for loving someone who wasn’t their spouse and for having a child(ren) out of wedlock.
because yes, rhaegar and lyanna’s love can be considered an act of selfishness, and rhaenyra loving harwin and having children with him can also be considered selfish.
but guess what? love in general is a very selfish state of being. you are prioritizing your partner and your desires over everything and everyone else in your life.
one of the greatest love stories of all time, romeo and juliet, is a tale of two selfish lovers who seek to be together despite the immense hatred between their families. selfless and dutiful children would never love an enemy. and yet, despite romeo and juliet’s love story ending in tragedy, no one would ever argue that these two lovers were in the wrong for simply trying to be together even though their love caused their families great grief. why? because the feud between the Montagues and the Capulets was stupid. and the story ends with the characters agreeing that this feud went on for long enough and acknowledging the fact that this petty feud between the families was the cause of their misery and the tragedy that befell them.
though the circumstances of all three love stories are different, it’s undeniable that these lovers were selfish for prioritizing their own desires over their duties to their houses.
to end this little spiel, i’d like to mention that the reason i first brought up a modern au was to remind people that the only reason rhaelya and rhaenyra’s relationship with harwin can be so decisively called selfish is because these characters live in westeros. and westeros is a fucked up society rooted in systematic oppression, violence, and abuse and other forms of exploitation in order to further the agenda of the powerful despite the harm it causes. any modern comforts and progressive ideas hinder the control the patriarchs have over their families and put a name to the bigotry expressed against these unconventional relationships. so yes, their love is selfish because being unconventional in such a backwards society is a recipe for disaster, especially since both of these relationships hinge on a woman deciding to take control of her sexual autonomy, which is a big no no in westeros since a woman’s body only belongs to her father and husband. so yes, these love stories are selfish because these characters are prioritizing themselves in a society that benefits from them losing their autonomy and harms them and their loved ones when they try to take back their autonomy.
to finish off, the reason i brought up the tragic love story of romeo and juliet is to remind people that even though rhaegar and lyanna’s love was selfish, other characters still need to be held accountable for their actions that helped to escalate this misunderstanding into a tragedy that consumed all of westeros.
#the only reason any of this shit happened is bc westeros is a fucked up place#their love may be selfish but it’s also commendable#we’re only human~ and we were built for love~#i think some of the rhaegar hate stems from the fact that he can openly love another woman but elia would be scorned for doing the same#but this isn’t rhaegar’s fault. their society just failed them. which sucks#the bodies of nobles in westeros never truly belong to themselves. which is insane. the king belongs to his ppl. a wife to her husband#a son to his father. a daughters body belongs to her father. the common folk belong to the nobles… ughhh#westeros is truly a society built on controlling the autonomy of others in order to gain power/benefits#sorry if all this doesn’t make any sense lol#i haven’t read romeo and juliet recently and just brushed up on it through wiki so im sry if i got something wrong lol#jon snow belonging to the nights watch and getting killed for daring to try to leave to save someone he loves…#hdsjhddhd#nedcat you’ll always be the exception ❤️#political marriages = big business deal#<- nedcat isn’t the exception here tho#me: progressive ideas would be beneficial to the individuals! also me: no shit sherlock#westerosi society escalated a misunderstanding to a tragedy#alicent and robert are arms of the patriarchy#tywin and viserys benefitting from the devestation they caused until they’re dead and the house of cards falls apart#asoiaf#rhaegar targaryen#lyanna stark#pro rhaenyra targaryen#rhaenyra targaryen#harwin strong#laenor velaryon#anti alicent hightower#anti alicent stans#anti elia stans#someone once tried to argue about modern au stuff about westeros to me and it just got me thinking lolo

There’s something so…gorgeous about how the story of Vermax laying dragon eggs in the crypts of Winterfell works as piece of symbolism. It doesn’t really matter if physical dragon eggs exist down there imo because this story adds so much meaning to Jon’s status as a hidden dragon and also his status as one of the last remaining scions of House Targaryen. Plus it does a lot to contextualize how Ned’s action of saving his nephew’s life is in line with centuries old magic, even though he never intended it to be such.
Because Jace and Cregan quite famously made a pact which was called the “Pact of Ice and Fire”, in which they promised to join their houses through the union of marriage. We also have the canonical representation of Starks as 🧊 and Targaryens as 🔥. Two opposing sides that could do harm to each other have decided to come together through marriage and procreation. Through this pact comes a new life that will be a balanced union of ice and fire.
Then we get the story of Vermax laying eggs in the Winterfell crypts. An act that symbolizes the continuation of life. It’s so interesting because we know how this story ends. We know that after this, the dragons will die and will be no more in Westeros….BUT there’s the exception of the eggs in Winterfell. They may be unhatched but they are like a promise of life. And it’s Winterfell’s crypts that keep them hidden from danger and Winterfell’s heated walls that cover them.
What’s even more gorgeous is that this pact is made in a period of civil war that threatened the survival of the Targaryen dynasty. And like… isn’t that Jon Snow’s life story?! He was born at the tail of of Robert’s rebellion which saw the death of the Targaryens. Aerys and Rhaegar (and Rhaegar’s children were dead). A child Viserys, Rhaella, and an unborn Dany were all that was left of the Targaryen legacy.
And then comes the unexpected Jon Snow. Born of the union of Stark and Targaryen, ice and fire. Ice and fire were on opposing sides in the war and killed each other. But then comes Jon Snow to mend that rift and heal that divide. He is born after a period of death to represent new life and new beginnings. He’s just a little baby but he symbolizes so much!
It’s why I think Jon serves better as a symbol of spring and not winter. Because everything about him represents the promise of life after death: born at the end of a civil war, him being represented by a winter rose, him being symbolized as the corn king (a mythical figure who represented the cycle of life and death), his presumed death at the end of ADWD but the promise that he will be resurrected, etc.
And then we have Ned Stark being the unwitting proxy to his ancestor Cregan. Ned took this dragon egg and hid him away within Winterfell’s walls. Then he took Jon’s mother and also placed her in the crypts. It’s no wonder that Jon has so many strange dreams regarding the crypts. Symbolically, the secret of his birth being hidden away in the crypts ties in quite nicely with Vermax’s hidden dragon eggs. In both cases, a symbol of Targaryen life is hidden within the walls of the Winterfell crypts. Then there’s Summer’s strange vision of a winged serpent as Winterfell burned. Many fans has often wondered what this vision meant. I’m not sure either, but it would be a nice touch if this is a symbolic representation of Jon Snow. As it was with Summer’s vision, Jon is the dragon that has hatched and left the confines of Winterfell’s walls, and he is ready to do some damage.
#jon snow#asoiaf#valyrianscrolls#i don’t believe physical dragon eggs in the winterfell crypts will be an important plot point#I think this story is mainly there to symbolize jon#a little dragon - scion of house targaryen- hidden away by the Starks of winterfell#Also wonderful that we’re told so many times that the crypts represent the power and legacy of the starks#It’s where the dead stark kings reside- the kings of winter with their stone direwolves#Then we have the dragon - the symbol of house Targaryen’s power#These two things come together and bam we have mr jonathan snow#An unassuming inheritor of the legacies of these two houses#But he is something special because he’s something that has never existed before#Ice and fire coexist with him and within him#He was not intentional but he is here#And he is here when it matters most - after all the world needs a savior#I think this puts quite the spin on the idea of a promised prince#Because there was a pact many many years ago that didn’t come into fruition in its intended time frame#But it’s been realized now when darkness threatens the land#Oooooh the ~Jon is the prince who was promised ~ truthers win every single day 🎉 🪩 🕺#It’s so interesting that the original pact was between a Targ princess and a Stark lord#At most the children born of this union would’ve only been lords or ladies#But with the union of Rhaegar and Lyanna it’s switched#Jon not only is a prince through his father but he has also been made an inheritor of winterfell#He is more powerful and important than the original pact intended#He’s both prince and lord - he’s a KING#And he has claims to both sides#No one is doing it like him I fear#canonjonsnow
