ABSENT DEMOCRACY, TRANSPARENCY
I made a google doc with each genre submission I got, along with number of likes the genre in the post got. This method isn't totally fair; more recent submissions will have fewer likes by virtue of being more recent. But it's useful data I think.
Tumblr media
Then I grouped the genres by a vague sense of similarity.
Tumblr media
I eliminated some of the genres I am personally a little more familiar with (nü metal, industrial rock, post-punk, first wave ska).
Here's where I ran into a problem-- do we go more specific or more general with the genre? I could see either one getting more unique, stranger results (more freedom=casting a wider net, more specificity=stuff nobody's heard because the listeners are more likely to be passionate about their favorite obscure thing).
I decided to go with 'more general,' in general. I eliminated genres that were a little redundant (lots of Afrobeat could be classified as Highlife, apparently, and 'alternative country' encapsulates stuff like 'deathgrass,' 'gothic country,' and 'murderfolk').
However, the exception to the 'more general' rule was 'a specific not-American country take on a genre.' So 'Nigerian disco' won over 'disco,' 'Romanian house' won over 'Chicago house.' Which is hard for me, personally, but that's the cost of expanding your horizons!
Another exception was 'this genre is too broad.' So 'Andean music' was eliminated. It would have been different if OP had suggested, idk, 'classical Andean,' or 'Andean jazz.' Also I forgot my reason for eliminating 'Latin jazz.' But it was good, I promise.
Tumblr media
The 'party time' list had to be narrowed down. I took out EBM (since dance-punk was also there), go-go funk, and dub reggae, somewhat randomly.
Then I removed 'Irish traditional music' because I, personally, had a bestie in high school who was an Irish dancer, so I know a few jigs and reels and while my experiences are not universal, I had to narrow this thing down somehow.
'Serial music' seems to be more of a compositional strategy than a genre, so I eliminated it.
Tumblr media
That got us to 19.
Then I tried to maximize the number of different regions. Highlife and Nigerian disco are both West African. I eliminated the former.
8 genres to go.
I love hyphy music so much, but I know so much less abstract rap. Reluctantly, I eliminated hyphy. :(
This is where it got really hard. I made eliminations more or less at random. Yoiking, ghettotech, and Ethiopian jazz met their end.
Then I went by genre. I wanted to eliminate 1 from the rap category, 1 from the party category OR 1 from the alt category. I remembered liking a post where someone jokingly affected a 'listen the frick-frack up tumblypoos'-type of cadence in order to introduce tumblr to Memphis horrorcore. So horrorcore won out over abstract rap because of that post.
Lots of people here like metal, but relatively few of them like country. So I eliminated sludge metal. I hope no goopy trash monsters try to seek revenge.
So, ladies, gentlemen, and others, I present to you: the Eurevision 2024 genres!
Tumblr media
It leans a little party music heavy, but that's okay, I'm sure that if we do this again next year we'll try other stuff.
The goals here are to a) broaden horizons, b) show off our knowledge of under-appreciated (to white middle-income Americans, at least) music, and c) bop. I tried to keep the music origins and genres as different as possible. I can't wait to see what people submit!
Genre submissions now closed! No more genre submissions. I will make a list of final genres presently.

‘We Were Hyphy’ film explores overlooked Bay Area music scene
Laurence Madrigal’s debut documentary originated as a passion project that was envisioned as a 15-minute ode to a music scene he was drawn to. The focus was on the hyphy movement that emerged out of Oakland in the 1990s, and the influence it eventually had on the music scene and community as it spread across the Bay Area and then the country during the 2000s and 2010s.
[...] That overwhelming input that filmmakers received from the community became critical, informing and steering the film in exciting new directions, Madrigal said. Numerous high-profile offers got extended as well, from such sources as “Blindspotting” scribe and star Rafael Casal, who signed on as an executive producer and appears in the film discussing how hyphy inspired his career.

Reverse unpopular opinion: for once I shall not choose violence. Topic is CFGC!
the SECOND i saw your url i was already sorting thru memory trying to think of something positive to say about dani soto because i figured that’d be what you were asking 😛
but cfgc! imo they’re definitely the most realistic out of the skamverse bands / artists, probably owing to the writers letting the cast create the music themselves. they’re good! they’re genuinely fun! i voluntarily listen to hyphy and life in italics often (not an ITR fan tbh), but at the same time: they’re so endearingly teenager, and i love it. they’re somehow both very corny but very poetic lmao. but whatever, here’s how we can still get shay dixon a grammy.

What's a piece of media you know is bad but enjoy regardless?
That's a toughy.
It's probably a three way tie between cheesy disaster flicks, pulpy military/sci-fi paperback novels, and music video reactions on YouTube.
Like, I love those stupid 90s and 00s disaster flicks like Deep Impact, The Core, shit like that. They all follow the same formula to a tee, they all have at least one major celebrity, and they all make me super hyphie.
The books, like, I'm talking John Ringo ass shit. Like death of the author is hard because this dude has characters just rant like Facebook boomers with shitty Republican takes. But also there's a series about a man who assassinate Bin Laden and takes his bounty money to fund a militaristic city state in the nation of Georgia.
The YouTube videos, it's specifically when vocal coaches react to metal music videos. They're just really enjoyable, I have no explanation. Look up the ones for Jinjer's song Pisces, you'll get it.
Compliment time. You've got such a breadth of taste and it's all really good. I fondly remember there was a night where we stayed up talking about music after DnD swapping recs and what we were listening to and I'm still listening to some of that to this day. I know if I'm in the mood for something slightly weird and not like what I normally am into, I can ask and you'll probably have something and it's really appreciated, fam

Bully Market Breeding Honcho x Puma Our first in-house breeding with Honcho (Buss x Ms. Mack) was a success. We bred him to our girl, Puma (Buss x Hyphy), and we have four beautiful puppies on the ground. Most of you are familiar with Thee Buss so here’s a little more info on Ms. Mack and Hyphy. Ms. Mack is an inbred Phenom, Phenom daughter that we purchased from @EminentBullies. She has good overall structure, a nice head-shape and a tri color coat that looks similar to Beastro’s but she really has the Phenom look. When we bred her to Buss we got a litter of 7 puppies. All of them really nice, flashy, breed quality dogs. Hyphy is a Situation x Secret daughter. When @HardBodyBullies1 and I discussed collaborating we were looking at the peds and knew when we bred Hyphy to Thee Buss it would hit hard. Unfortunately the breeding only produced two pups but luckily they were both first pick caliber females. That’s how we ended up with Puma. She’s a thick and compact bitch that looks a lot like Buss and has really nice movement Between the two breedings that produced the Honcho and Puma, there was a total of 9 puppies and they were all really nice. Knowing that, and how stacked their pedigrees are, I had a good feeling about what these two would do together. They didn’t disappoint! We have two males and two females. I think the two females will be staying here. I’ll post pictures of them up next. Email us at [email protected] for information on our puppies and future breedings. Thanks for taking the time to read the long post. 🙏📈 #HonchoXPuma www.BullyMarket.com (at Bully Market) https://www.instagram.com/p/B7HuSHTHugE/?igshid=wxj25ciyd3zy

Blog Post: 5 illipinos
For this blog post, we are going to bring about the Asian American Subculture that falls under the FIlipinx community. So I guess this could be considered to be an Asian American Sub-Subculture.  I am sorry in advance for the cringy content to come later but this era was monumental. It all began a little over a decade ago in 2007. With an aesthetically social media platform called Tumblr. Of course, we all know what Tumblr is since it is the platform we are using to share our blog posts now. Today’s usage of Tumblr differs from back then. It use to be like Twitter and Instagram combine but now I feel that the hype for the platform died down a lot.  In the year 2007 Filipinx American adolescents were intrigued by the fad of brand name clothing, snapback hats, and I Heart Boobies bracelets.
Tumblr media
These trendsetters were known as illipinos or swagapinos. The Urban Dictionary definition of an illpino is a Filipino that wears brand names and breaks hearts. They are also defined on Urban Dictionary as Filipinos from the Bay Area that get hyphy. An “ill Filipino.” This culture holds near and dear to my heart because I am a Filipina American from the Bay Area.
Tumblr media
As a very young girl that was never supposed to be on the internet at the age of eight, I was introduced to the Youtube side of illipinos. By that, I mean the FilAms that created singing videos. Young and underdeveloped artists such as D’Pryde, Aj Rafael, Lateeya, Albert Posis, Sheryl Ann Padre, and many more. I remember when he released his phenomenal single Bottle Dollar. It gave me hope that love is real and that I could have my own swagapino.
Tumblr media
Today’s day and age of illipinos are not as apparent as they were a few years back. They have mellowed out a lot and are now known as eboys/girls, hypbeasts, or vsco girls. But once an illipino always an illipino.

Have you ever been concussed? No. Lol that reminds me of Johnny Knoxville in Jackass the Movie after he fights (well, attempts to and loses badly) this wrestler, Butterbean, and he’s on his way to the ER and he’s like, “I’m feeling a little concussed.” And then later he’s like, “Is Butterbean okay?” which is funny cause like I said, Knoxville got knocked the hell out, Butterbean was perfectly fine.  Would you say The Nightmare Before Christmas is more appropriate for Halloween, Christmas or just whenever? xD It’s great for both Halloween and Christmas, but he is the Pumpkin King, after all. Have you ever seen something that wasn’t actually there? What? Yeah, like I’ve seen movement out of the corner of my eye and thought someone passed by, but no one did.  When do you find your brain is most active / thoughtful? It never shuts up. Do you assume you won’t get on with someone because of the things they like? I could get along with someone who I might not have much or anything in common with. We just might not be friends, but we could still get along. And maybe we could be friends, we don’t have to like the same things. Maybe they can show me new stuff that I might end up liking and get into and vice versa. Who knows. It is nice to have some things in common, though. I like talking about shared interests and “fan girling” over things lol.
What time did you switch your light off last night? It was like 3, I think. Did you fall asleep soon after or does it take you hours? I fell asleep some time within the hour. Have you ever started a trend? What was it? No. Are you completely disconnected to what’s popular nowadays? With some things, but I hear about a lot on social media and I have a younger brother who fills me in on some stuff. Some of things I’m just like...wtf. Kids nowadays are weird. Obviously back in my younger days things were cooler. haha. What is one trait you look for in potential friends? If we vibe, we vibe. Plus like I said, I do like to have some things in common cause then we connect and bond over those things.  How shy would you say you are? Very. Have you ever wondered what strangers’ lives are like? Yeah. Who taught you to tie your shoe laces? My mom. I remember when I got the hang of it I went around the house tying all the shoes. Are there any types of people you’re intrigued by? Who? Yeah, lots of people.  Have you ever argued with a teacher? What about? No.  Do you get annoyed when you don’t understand things? Sometimes. Especially when it came to school stuff, like math for instance. Math was a bitch and always gave me a hard time and I’d get SO frustrated. Many times I cried out of frustration and fear of not passing.  Is the internet you’re using right now wireless? Yeah. Do you feel awkward when people you don’t know talk like you’re bffls? xP I’ve had people I didn’t know or just met start opening up about their life right away and telling me things and I’m just like uhh why are you telling me this? lol. People have told me they felt comfortable talking and opening up to me, so I guess that’s why. It would just be awkward because I didn’t know them, so it was a lot to unload for just meeting and I didn’t know what to say. But hey, if they needed to just vent then I’m glad I was able to listen.  Do you flinch easily? I’m jumpy. Have you ever had an alter ego? What were they like? No. Why do / don’t you like roller coasters? I’m a scardy cat and also they’re too jerky for me, which isn’t good for my back. Have you ever wanted an identical twin? I did when I was a kid. Do you use a ‘baby voice’ when you speak to kids or animals? Yeah. What does your laugh sound like? I have no idea how to describe that. Have you ever been called a Drama Queen? Did you take it as a compliment? XD I have. I was confused cause I definitely don’t consider myself to be. Do you already have your life planned out? Not even a little. I have no idea what I want to do or where to go from here. Do you eat breakfast in the morning? What do you have? Usually. I like scrambled eggs with cheese and spinach. When was the last time you had butterflies in your stomach? Why? Recently, but not the good kind. I haven’t felt the good kind in a long time. Do you have any special skills? What like? No. Tell me a slang word from where you live: (If there is one o.O) “Hella” used to totally be a California thing, but now it’s more common. I think “hyphy” or “going dumb” might be some. I don’t know. Oh, and I’m told it’s a Californian thing to say, “Yeah, no” and “No, yeah.” Like, “Yeah, no we’re definitely not going.” and “No, yeah it’s fine.” OH and real kicker, “Yeah, no, for sure.” lol. I think also words like, “stoked” and “gnarly” may have originated here and the whole valley girl thing, too. That stuff is more common now, though.  Is there anyone who bugs you, but you don’t know why? Not currently, but I have felt that way about some people before. When in public, do you talk to random people for fun? Uh, no. That’s definitely not me. Have you ever been on medication? What for? Yes, depression, anxiety, and pain management. And antibiotics, but I’m talking about stuff I took/take long-term. Although, there was a time I was on antibiotics for a few months. Do you customize everything you own? No. What pattern / colour is on your favourite shoes? White with 3 black stripes on both sides. Have you ever worn something so much it got hole-y? Yes. What noise makes you feel sick? (Fingers on a chalk board, etc) Not sick, but eating sounds (slurping, smacking, sucking, chomping) sounds drive me inSANE. Would you be embarrassed to let your parents read your text messages? No. They’re all from them and my brother anyway, with just a few from my Nana. lol. Do you prefer platonic or romantic relationships? Uh friends are nice and a romantic relationship is nice, too. I don’t have any of those currently, though. Would you rather direct or star in a movie? Neither. Are you a member of any clubs? Which ones? Proud member of the Losers Club. ha. Describe your dream hairstyle: I just need to get it dyed and styled again. I like how it looks after I get it done. Do you own anything glow in the dark? No. What was your favourite TV show when you were a kid? I watched Nick Jr, Disney Channel, PBS, Kids WB, Fox Kids, Saturday morning cartoons on ABC like Recess and Pepperann, and Cartoon Network. What’s your favourite TV show now? I have a few. What’s your favourite flavour ice-pop? If you’re talking about what I call Otter Pops, then I like the blue, green, red, and pink ones. Do you prefer odd or even numbers? Do you have a reason why? My favorite number happens to be even, but I don’t have a thing for even numbers. Or odd numbers.  Have you ever kept a scrapbook? Yes. How many times have you moved house? Are you happy where you are now? I think 4 or 5, but only once that I’m old enough to remember. And no, I’m not. We want to move and have wanted to for a long time, but we haven’t been able to. Have you ever made an animation? What of? I’ve made gifs. How do you cope with stress? Not well. Do you prefer butter or margarine? Butter.

Summer 2021
Sorry for the hella late post. The last actual blog was about me going to visit my cousins, which was in June. Also double post today.
June: My heart was so fucking warm. Seeing my family and providing all the support to my cousins was the best thing for me that summer. We were hella live, all the younger cousins showing off getting hyphy. WE showed LA what it is to slap all the bay shit. FOOD DONT SLAP. It made me connect back with my Samoan side again and I love it.
Just chilling in Carson then out to Fullerton. Family is family is family. it’s all love.
July:  Saw the babies grow even more. They’re so big and I love them. I will do anything for those babies. Grace and Jacoby, those are my peeps.
My birthday was cool, but Idk what I even did. LOL I’m playing. I spent my birthday in San Diego visiting one of my oldest online pixelated friend, LOL! Jannica. It was my first time in San Diego and she made me feel hella welcomed. I didnt want to do any of the touristy things, I just wanted to kick it. Became hella close friends with her friends and others. This also made my heart hella full. We’ve been closer ever since. She’s the homie for life.
August: It was chill, nothing too fancy. EXCEPT, My boy ISH got married and that shit was hella crackin’. We went off even though it was hella hot and that 19. But it was such a fun time. We all spent time together and chilled like homies again. It was fun man. I love my friends, people want hella bougie shit, but making bougie memories are better.  I had some struggles and was involved with someone, but doesnt matter anymore. I grew out of it.
September:  Just Ish’s house warming. This month was just filled with connections. Got closer to all the homies and started selling more shoes and everything else.
Got hella closer to KIM, JASMINE, SHANNYN, DWAYNE, NATHAN, AND EVERYONE ELSE. It was a good month of reflection and growth. Made hella friends at the gym, we’re all homies now. So much growth man.

WE WERE HYPHY
The hyphy movement was a moment in time that would go on to shape the Bay Area for years to come. The slang, the dances, the fashion, the music and the culture of those few years molded an entire generation of Bay Areans, from rappers like G-Eazy and Kamaiyah; Broadway and film stars like Daveed Diggs and Rafael Casal; viral car culture fanatics like Sideshow Tone; and even blockbuster film directors like Ryan Coogler.
