not enough discussion about the gavins' complicated relationship with feminine-coded/beauty products, i don't think.

#for klavier because it's not as direct it's about how we never see him actually wearing lipstick? even though apollo literally attends #a concert of his which is where you'd most expect him to wear makeup. but apparently he just doesnt. or at least not in public #klavier gavin #kristoph gavin #i feel like there are several ways you can read into it. the misogyny/toxic masculinity one is really obvious clearly with kristoph's #singling out of men specifically and klavier's (probably accidental?) condescending manner of calling women 'fraulein' plus his general #mildly patronising attitude towards many of the women in the game (also probably unintentional)#(i think he's trying to be charming and it's coming off wrong to some of them. like ema. and me.)#but i feel like there's also maybe an element of... inherent perfecfionism to it? like both of these products are conventionally beautifyin #products and kristoph while he is open to showing people he uses nail polish specifically chooses one that's clear and missable unless you #see him apply it. he also feels the need to justify his use of it and specifically spell it out as something he chooses to do rather than #needs to do even though duh. that should be obvious.#idk there's just something about his seeming need to take control of that narrative that i find interesting. his need to spin it into a #'there's nothing wrong with my nails but I had the foresight to see that even the smallest parts of my appearance should be kept immaculate #and it's a choice i'm making to refine an already adequate part of my personage /not/ to cover some unsightly defect.' the need to emphasis #that specifically is so. hm. and with klavier i could see it being a case of him liking makeup liking the pops of colour yet being unwillin #to admit to it because he's afraid that other people might see it as him being dissatisfied with his own appearance regardless of if he is #or isn't. or even just perceiving colourful makeup as being unseemly because it's so overt and unnatural.#like i can see this as them both viewing 'real' beauty to be that which is inherent to a person and seemingly effortless #thus somehow negating the beauty which one achieves through cosmetics or other external means.#and if you want to use external means to achieve beauty or neatness or whatever then your only valid options are those which blend into you #natural state. like clear nail polish. or really awful spray tan.#i feel like klavier's less confined by these ideas (if they hold merit at all) considering he actually owns coloured lipstick and he wears #jewellery (admittedly quite 'masculine' jewellery no gems or pearls or anything like that but jewellery nonetheless) but i think it just #makes it more interesting that he doesnt seem quite able to cross the line anyway. like it's that ingrained into his system.#anyway that's all i've got. you guys should tell me what you think too #annotations

i think the thing i'm most disappointed about with riordanverse fandom now versus like 2014 is not only has the fandom not gotten any less racist or queerphobic or ableist (in fact in some regards its gotten worse!) but now it's just boring too. like there's no fandom infrastructure anymore - the community these days is almost entirely source material-driven - and you deviate from canon even slightly people get weird about it. whatever happened to the post-HoO fanon boom. the fandom needs to get weirder again. and self-sufficient. and less offensive.

#pjo #riordanverse #deep and weary sigh. we need to bring back the lower ecosystem rings of fandom #prop up some good ol' community spaces especially since a lot of old ones have totally petered out #< mostly referring to stuff like ye olde ship headcanons blogs #heck even doing a quick search for ''pjo headcanons'' the most recent blog was last active in 2017 and the other two in 2013 #there's an rp community floating around but im keeping tabs on the riordanverse askblog community and its a bit dire #there's been like what - *one?* maybe two major fandom aus that have floated around recently?#one moreso being one person's au that most people dont actually do much with #and the other more being like a half-hearted general concept that got kicked around for a couple of weeks #i am legitimately tempted to just go wild and start planning out and setting up like a hub for trying to revitalize the community #like the community EXISTS. it's THERE. it ebbs and flows! but now it only really does much when there's new official content #and it rarely exists outside of that #and given we are technically in a fandom boom right now with the show now is like. the perfect opportunity to set up fandom infrastructure #so that new fans have a place to go and integrate with the community and start pumping new life back into things #also i think the fandom becoming more self-sufficient could help with the offensive part since Rick sure isnt helping

#I also think american exceptionalism and their bizarre cultural one-way street isolation plays a role #i think it's different if you actually see other countries as equals and see that they have female leaders and realise that it's #not going downhill it's not solving everything it's business as usual and it's just another boring fucking politician #and this makes the gender of the candidate LESS (not saying no) issue people obsess about or feel a need to discuss #(e.g. people laying into the appearance of female politicians? certainly misogyny. making jokes about cooking and shoes? definitely too #but I feel like that was more a 'gotta insult these fucking politicians' and gender being one of the targets when people want to do that)#but if you're the US and giant parts of the populace think they're the specialmost extra complicatedest country in this our planetworld #the fact that it works for so many other countries takes a much lower priority #because 'yeah sure a woman can govern a....'checks notes' Fineland and United Kingdom of England or Germanland'#but the US of freedom? we got a red button and what if she's on her period!!?! We are a REAL country!!'#not to mention how deeply entrenched the idea of the US as being CONSTANTLY under attack is and the president as the PROTECTOR #and that protector needs to be daddy of course #i also think the different attitude to leaders plays a role #because a part of misogyny is how much people love to HATE women - to sink their teeth into them and demonise them for every flaw #so any country that has some kind of weird worship of their leaders or sees them as some heroes or extra-class of person*#in my opinion might have a harder time to elect a woman because the moment a woman becomes a candidate #you just have to find the right flaw to go on and on about to make the population absolutely hate her or question her competency #meanwhile the general slack we cut men means they can do whatever but somehow still be compatible with that concept of leadership #(*not just the US ....though a lot of other countries with similar attitudes to their leaders are not standing out as democracies tbh)
