On this lovely Valentine's Day, I am once again reminded of the one time in high school a friend of mine (who had known me for a good like THREE YEARS) somehow was under the misapprehension that I was both allosexual and indeed, heterosexual, and when I mentioned off-hand I had never been in a relationship, she said, "oh, that's ok! You'll find someone. The right guy will come along." And she was being so sweet and usually is better at catching my drift than this that I sort of spluttered and said, "huh? I don't... I don't think you're quite following what I'm saying, uh" And she smiled and said, "You're definitely going to meet a nice guy! Maybe in a couple years or something, but you won't be alone forever!" And it was HILARIOUS to me that she didn't even consider that I might be a LESBIAN with how surprised I was at the idea of dating a man lmaoooo. Also, at this point, I was identifying as aromantic? And very open about it? Not that she really had any cause for me to say it directly but it's not a shocker or anything, I'd have thought she'd hear it from one of our mutual friends at some point, at least.

Anyways, Happy Valentine's Day to her! I hope she's doing well and has a nice boyfriend of her own. Shoutout to her for giving me the funniest allo interaction I've ever had.

(I'm just going to edit in a disclaimer to say: this is subjective. To people who aren't me.)

Elves being a distinct non-human species and alien and fey is good, and the other non-humans should also get to be so weird.

On the other hand this can apparently(?) make them hard to roleplay because of this, and there's always been arguing about whether or not elven adventurers make sense. They do, and I don't understand the problem. (Reverie doesn't need to be half the length of the rest of the party's sleep though).

There are elves who have the aesthetic and culture of their people; a longer than human lifespan; and sometimes the mystical connection to life/the Weave, but have biology and psychology more in line with humans: and that's why half-elves are a player option. Hell, when I homebrew my own worlds half-elves are the elves of the setting (everyone not half-human is in the feywild or some other far-off place).

Honestly, sometimes I think all elves should be like drow, where they're not (usually) listed as a core option and come with a warning that they have special circumstances (mechanical and lore) surrounding them and you should talk to your DM about how/if you can implement it before playing. It would have spared me many headaches. Probably by exchanging them for new ones with people saying 'nobody is allowed to play elves, that's badwrongfun.'

Hmmm... Want to write my thoughts somewhere more coherent and formal... But for now a thought bubbling is that theres a general impression I get that people think that oppression and discrimination are like. Fixed, natural states.

That dynamics like misogyny are. Like some sort of good vs evil fight where it will always exist so you need to fight against it forever against the Other Side.

Like, we've made great strides against homophobia. Right? It's generally okay to be gay as long as you aren't too fruity or wierd. That's, nice for gay people who aren't too fruity or wierd.

It becomes more and more distasteful and unhelpful to pull the whole 'ugh, the straights' sense of humor and solidarity when straight people are. Just sort of Whatever about gay people 80% of the time.

Like I haven't seen that sentiment in a while. It's juvenile, parroting an old phrase to seem like you fit in, when you haven't experienced the discrimination that those phrases were backed by.

For me, this is where man-hating is at. It's also in an odd limbo where some people are still terribly affected by misogyny and patriarchy and are venting a frustration with reductive, community-signalling turns of phrase to affirm your common eperience.

But it just isn't as common an experience. The slope is starting to lower. I've met plenty of people whose whole schtick is man-hating when their experience with misogyny is entirely just... men being cunts.

Now. To be clear. Being a cunt. Can be just as harmful. But this is how it goes.

Oppresion is carried out and enforced systemically. You don't have to be a cunt to be an oppressor.

Being a cunt is often a response to *losing* systemic pressure over the oppressed group. You can lie back and relax when the system does what you want. When that system stops working, you need to do the work yourself.

I don't like men! I don't. 90% of them are huge cunts. But that is often because they are *losing*. That 10% grows. Even if that 10% is just indifference. If being a cunt is too much work for too little return.

The dynamic is changing. And so, the response, and tactics must too.

As more and more of the system is dismantled (and of course, this discussion is not relevant if the system is still in full operation for you.) you cannot treat an oppressive group or institution as absolute.

'Fuck all men' is not okay if being a man is no longer participation in an oppressive system. It is an identity that correlates with, not causes, unbelievable levels of cunt behaviour.

If you insist upon this sort of behaviour, then you are actively against *social* equality. These sorts of phrases are *systemic* rallying cries. Without a system, you are just rallying for hatred. You are a cunt.

To be clear, this is still systemic. Of course. But things are and have and will change. I do not automatically assume people who talk like this are cunts. But. It becomes less and less understandable and reasonable. It fosters an us vs them mentality outside of a dynamic of oppressed and oppressor.

It brings the system into your soul. And even when the external system is dismantled, you will still be under it.

some folks are discussing fandom infighting, but I haven’t still seen any examples of wolfwren stans sending hate. I scrolled through every comment on the Ahsoka casts’ posts (yes all of them) and the only hate I saw was homophobia aimed at wolfwren.

does anyone have examples & links to wolfwren fans being toxic? so we as a community can block them + make sure they understand they aren’t welcome in the fandom? I have dozens of tangible examples of the vile hate people have sent to wolfwren stans (x x x) and a long list of transphobes/homophobes if anyone wants a block list.

I cannot remember how, but while on holiday last week my friend group got into the argument of who Norwegians hate the most of out Swedes and Danes. Everyone how lived close to the Swedish border hated on Swedes the most, and those who lived further south in Norway hated the Danes the most. So, I guess the age long question is still up for debate!

i think it's sad how little empathy kids tend to have these days. the other day, i was walking down a flight of stairs at my school when a random 11-year-old boy tapped my arm and asked "are you gay?". now, i thought he was saying "are you okay", and nodded (nothing wrong with being gay! i'm just not one to tell my sexuality to random kids who interrogate me). then, he began hollering the f-slur and yelling that everyone should get away from me. it's sad that literal children are so used to throwing around language like that and making jokes out of what is just plain hate speech. we're all human beings. i don't see why differences like that should matter.
