Devo - Q: Are We Not Men? A: We Are Devo! (1978)

Forty-six years ago today, on August 28, 1978, Q: Are We Not Men? A: We Are Devo!, the debut studio album by Devo, was released. When Devo arrived on the scene, it was like they were from another planet, an effect achieved by upending all the tropes of rock. Gone were the sensuous hip-swaying curves and daring sexuality, replaced with jittery angles and angst-ridden hazmat-suited nerds. In Devo’s hands, even the Stones’ swaggering “(I Can’t Get No) Satisfaction” is a nerve-wracking paranoid affair devoid of any trace of the Stones’ testosterone sexuality. Produced by Brian Eno with remixing by David Bowie, the album would go on to be acclaimed as a game-changing visionary work and a landmark album the influence of which extends far beyond New Wave.

Devo documentary (2024)

There is currently a festival (l'étrange festival) near where I live, and I decided to see a couple movies. It's à festival about "weird" and/or experimental movies. Since I really liked Devo, I went to see this documentary.

It was awesome ! It tells the story of the band, how it was formed, what are their influences and all... I really enjoyed it !

At the beginning, before the movie started, a man briefly presented the band, and at some point he asked "if I say "are we not men ?" you answer ?" and all the room answered "we are Devo". It was awesome.

It's a documentary so there's not too much to say. Now I just gotta watch Human Highway and their music videos. Also, I loved the Dove bit. That was funny.
