Once upon a time I doodled some things in my sketchbook that I hated. Every time I opened up my sketchbook thereafter, I felt annoyed and discouraged. Eventually, I stopped opening it. The watercolours sat abandoned in a drawer. Months passed.
Then I was diagnosed with ADHD and started medication. Creativity started firing again in my brain! Still, what to do about the ugly page? Eventually I caught that thought and held onto it long enough to answer it: Make Something New.
I took a big blob of gouache and covered over the parts I hated (most of it). Then I thought I’d take a pic for posterity.
Tumblr media
I came up with an idea. I penciled it. I hated most of it so I erased it and tried again. I watched a tutorial on painting shrubs. Then I got to work.
Here’s a mid-fix pic:

I worked it until I was happy enough with it and that’s the pic at the top. I’m hardly a master but at least I’ve cleared away the block that had prevented me making progress ☺️

In singular deranged days work (where I was supposed to be getting OTHER things done) I made a cipher journal for decoding the ciphers in Gravity Falls, specifically for Journal 3, the Book of Bill and thisisnotawebsite.com. This included (ultimately) three pages of common ciphers used in the Gravity Falls fandom; originally I was only going to do two, but then got to the Blendin page in Journal 3, sighed deeply and made an extra page on the Vignére cipher. The clasps I made myself by hand, and the little white toggle is a raccoon tooth, which I may change out depending on what becomes available. The purple ink, although unable to be seen within the photos, actually glitters and looks rather cosmic to my delight.
Considering I made the most of it within a day, it meant I used the paper I had at hand, which wasn't good paper for actual ink as it bleeds through slightly (and is thus unbecoming), but as a fancy schm-ancy idiot who insists on using actual ink with dip pens for the 'breadth of the experience', this means I'm ultimately only using one side of the paper (to my chagrin) and the letters aren't as clear as they could be when I write on the paper. Nevertheless, I am rather happy about the result; young me from about a decade ago, who began to make a similar journal only to abandon the project would have been immensely excited that I actually made one and am currently using it to decipher things within Journal 3. There is something rather satisfying about it, I do confess.

Character: "Blip" (OC) Introduction: "Only small chunks of food fit into his mouth so he eats berries. He loves anything sweet, especially shakes, smoothies, bubble tea and melted ice cream." His design is based on an anteater, that's why I gave him "Mari" (the violet ant in the picture in the bottom right corner) as a friend! :D He was actually created 2018 but for some reason I didn't take the time to draw him properly outside of my sketchbook, so here he is~♫ (or maybe I drew him so late because he was too shy? who knows :'3)
> Please do not repost, recreate, trace, edit or use my art, thanks~ :3 Reblogs are appreciated ^^

I started a "Movie Journal"
Every movie, that I watch in cinema this year, gets a drawing. The first one was "Ghostbusters - Frozen Empire"
I really liked it!
Tumblr media
I'm gonna add the movie title and the release date (maybe the day I watched too)
I used Zebra Brush Pens and Watercolor
The art style is inspired by @ssavaart , thank you for sharing your processes and artwork!

I'm really happy with my most recent watercolors c:
Each of these flowers were flowers that I saw on the approach, the descent, or the climb for the West Ridge of Mt. Conness (5.6 trad/alpine, 1500'). I took reference photos of the flowers on my phone and then used the John Muir Laws field guide to identify them.
I climbed the West Ridge with 3 pitches on lead and the rest on simul. We took the Young Lakes approach, so from the wilderness station in Tuolumne, we hiked 7 miles and 1000ish feet of elevation and camped at Young Lakes (and got eaten alive by mosquitoes). The next day, we hiked through the wilderness for 3 miles and 1500ish feet of elevation. The climb starts at around 10,000 ft above sea level. The peak stands at 12,600 ft. After a tiring and magnificent climb, we hiked 10 miles back.
Completing this climb was a really big deal for me for a number of reasons.
I had 2 foot surgeries in the past 3 years. Basically I broke a bone I didn't know I had. (Turns out some people have extra! The more you know! 🌠) This would be my first big alpine day post-injury.
The approach and descent are very long and intense. This was going to be hard, and to be honest, I wasn't sure if I'd be up to it. I lost a lot of leg strength, ankle stability, and cardiovascular fitness over the past 3 years.
I quit smoking weed in preparation for the high elevation. The smoke was making my lungs feel Bad, especially after getting Covid a couple of times. (I still take edibles but it doesn't feel as good as smoking imo)
A big day for me, and despite my anxieties, I did the climb in great style and in good time :)
I'm happy with how these watercolors turned out, especially because they commemorate a really big achievement after 3 years of injury and subsequent healing.
And these wildflowers are so special to me. Many of these flowers can only be found at high elevations. Some of these are alpine variants of more common flowers (like the Alpine Daisy as a variant of the Sierra Daisy). Some of these flowers can only grow at >10,000 feet (like the Sky Pilot). And all of these flowers are members of a complex, rare, and resilient ecosystem.
I'm still finding my style in watercolor. Some of these I think I nailed, but some of them feel overworked or disproportionate. I loved this exercise though and I plan to do more of these climbing+botany field journal entries.
Bonus watercolor - the next day at Climber Coffee we heard some very loud, insistent tweeting from a hollowed-out tree. Some tourists had gathered around it and were taking pictures. Turns out, it was this Northern Flicker chick calling for its mom (who was delivering food every so often). The little fluffball poked his head out every once in a while, it was very cute.
