“Indigo Tapestry” 64x47” #mixedmedia on unstretched canvas #tedrandler 2019 I had this small 10x7” drawing and I wanted to work with scaling it somehow. I remember reading about how #franzkline would take his thumbnail sketches and project them on his canvases to create his large compositions. I reinterpreted the projection process by scaling an image of my drawing in photoshop and then playing with some color adjustment. Then I sent my pdf to Adobe Acrobat because the app will tile the large format into a series of tiled 8.5x11 pages. In this case it was 56 pages. I pasted the pages together to create the large single image and then I mounted the paper to lightweight canvas. This was done with layers and layers of matte medium. Once assembled, I could paint on the surface. I like that the image was created by hand then process virtually through technology in photoshop and then return back in hands-on media in the form of the printouts and my painting with actual acrylics. Like a kind of Kintsugi, the paper would tear or wrinkle in the gluing process and because I was thinking it was like a tapestry, I preserved the imperfections in the matte medium—it reads like wrinkle fabric and acts like a kind of drawn texture. That's the most I could get it to show. The first one is taken with a better IPhone camera and the second a sub par android one. This took a little over 3 months to finish. I started it with three intention of it being pencil with a little color, then I started making it all colored pencils. But for some reason I can never get the vibrancy from prismacolor premiere pencils like others can. They always seem to be dull. Maybe I'm letting the graphite from pencil outline fuck it up. So I started adding ink and paint to this and it started to pop. It's a statement on addiction, incarceration, imprisonment, ineffective drug policy, the freest country in the world having the highest prison population. And most of those people are there because they wanted to alter their mind in some way, which everyone on this planet does through either a certain behavior(s) or substances. Like Bill Hicks said " It's ok to drink your drug. We meant those other drugs. Those are the ones that are bad for you." When that couldn't be any further from the truth. But people are starting to wake up. And things are starting to change.
