KALI POEM. This fall Berry Campbell will present an exhibition of Ann Purcell’s “Kali Poem” paintings. “Process is important – the act of painting itself. Thinking but not thinking, loose and free but controlled. Actively moving. Dance was very important to me when I was growing up. And now the relationship of music and dance is present in the gesture of painting. Creating a dialogue between the paintings, sometimes chaotic, sometimes flowing. It is not static. It cannot be easily read.”-Ann Purcell #annpurcell #purcell #kalipoem #abstraction #expressionism #artistquote #soloexhibition #nycart #artgallery #chelseagalleries #w24 #fallseason #womenartists #5womenartists #2womenartdealers #contemporaryart #artistrepresentation (at Berry Campbell) https://www.instagram.com/p/B9Mqg2wFmr3/?igshid=a4kynez40eej

In the 1970s, Color Field artist Larry Zox experimented with relegating forms to the periphery of his works - leaving unpainted voids at the center. EXPRESSIONISM. Dan Cameron commented that Ann Purcell had extended the “metaphoric velocity of her pieced paintings” into paintings themselves, in which she developed new methods of applying “thin lines, drips, oilstick calligraphy, and controlled skeins of color that act as chromatic splinters.” Observing that within a picture, these elements served to hold the frontal plane in place, Cameron stated how Purcell was able to balance “the stable pictorial structure with a new sense of disorderliness.” -Dan Cameron, Arts Magazine 1983 [Ann Purcell “Mahjong” 1983 acrylic, gold, oil and fabric on canvas, 66 x 72 inches] #annpurcell #expressionism #caravanseries #womenartists #nmwa #corcoran #mahjong #collageart #installationart #abstraction #abstractart #acrylicpainting #nycart #chelseagalleries #dancameron #artreview #artsmagazine #contemporaryart #artistrepresentation #berrycampbell (at Berry Campbell) https://www.instagram.com/p/B5EwTd6lv1Q/?igshid=lgelzgga4uvv

Ann Purcell’s development was shaped by time spent in the artist’s colony at Provincetown, Massachusetts, beginning in the summer of 1984. She first went to the Cape Cod artist’s colony on the recommendation of E. A. Carmean, Jr., then chief curator of twentieth-century art at the National Gallery. In Provincetown, Carmean introduced her to Robert Motherwell, whose work Purcell admires and from which she has drawn inspiration. Ann Purcell first exhibited her work in 1971, when she had a solo exhibition at Villa Roma Gallery in San Miguel de Allende. Subsequently—in addition to her 1976 exhibition at the Corcoran—she has had solo shows throughout her career, including two at Tibor de Nagy Gallery, New York (1980, 1983). She has also participated in numerous group exhibitions, including many museum shows, at such venues as the Albright-Knox Art Gallery, Buffalo, New York; the Corcoran Gallery of Art; and the National Museum of Women in the Arts. In the catalogue for a solo exhibition of Ann Purcell’s work at the Corcoran Gallery, Washington, D.C. (1976), the museum’s chief curator Jane Livingston noted Purcell’s “fluidity with a vast range of idioms.” Livingston wrote: “Purcell is among the most disciplined and prolific artists I have encountered: the number of fresh, sometimes startlingly brutal, sometimes exquisitely refined works she manages to create in the continually ongoing process of her production is proportionately remarkable.” [Ann Purcell “Lagniappe #7” 1978 acrylic on canvas 66 x 54 inches] #annpurcell #purcell #abstraction #abstractart #expressionism #womenshistorymonth #janelivingston #corcoran #artcurator #artcollector #lagniappe #chelseagalleries #nycart #contemporaryart #5womenartists #berrycampbell (at Berry Campbell) https://www.instagram.com/p/BuhtYpHlCEC/?utm_source=ig_tumblr_share&igshid=1sdgkjt98ikmz

From Ann Purcell’s @villagevoice review last week by R.C. Baker: “...1981’s “Séance,” Purcell was forging unison from fragments. In this six-foot-tall canvas, bright drips cascade from the top of the black ground and hopscotch around painted collage squares like a waterfall navigating boulders. Near the bottom, swirling golden dribbles are confined to a pasted-down purple rectangle, a moment of coiled energy that echoes the larger composition but also implies its own temporal space. Two other small swatches—broadly swiped with orange—tumble like snapshots of forgotten sunsets, a notion perhaps influenced by a title that calls to mind the search for a lost loved one.” #annpurcell #rcbaker #artreview #villagevoice #berrycampbell (at Berry Campbell)

ARTIST’S CHOICE: INTERCONNECTED Ann Purcell on Yvonne Thomas: “I was excited to discover this Yvonne Thomas painting. Through rigorous tutorials in connoisseurship from two artist mentors I came to be very picky about quality. I went to see the exhibit several times and still was sad to see it go. That emotional bond with someone's painting is so rare to find today. She has a deft touch, is intelligently consistent, and is a great colorist. The way she bends the colors so deceivingly minimal is true virtuoso. There is a Rothko-like meditativeness to this work. Lushness of colors, layers of textures, sensitive markings - I could look at this painting all day! It takes one to a beautiful place.” [Yvonne Thomas “Untitled” c. 1963 oil on canvas 15 x 17 1/4 inches] #artistschoice #interconnected #artistschooseartists #artistsquote #annpurcell #purcell #expressionism #abstraction #yvonnethomas #womenartists #variations #colorpainting #onlineexhibition #vitualviewing #contemporaryart #artgalleries #nycart #chelseagalleries #artfromhome #berrycampbell (at Berry Campbell) https://www.instagram.com/p/CARgOmPlHxy/?igshid=1flyxil17zhu1
