oooh i see!! do you hv any tips on improving ?? i like drawing but i always get discouraged cuz i don't draw as well as i want to be then the cycle repeats and i never get better 😓😓😓
and i think ur art is amazing so i js wanted to ask
hmmm usually the tip would be to practice but I'd say it's to know where to start first, do you like drawing a specific part ? do you struggle in any area ? it's a good place to start !
remember tho: you dont have to do perfect pieces every time, i figured that it's more fun yo just do doodles cause it's not perfect and pressuring, sometimes a doodle can be so good that you just take it and continue it (this is kinda like thumbnailing but unlike thumbnail u kinda just accidentally created something from nothing rather than having a goal in mind)
if you like drawing a particular part, draw it over and over either as a warm up or to pull yourself out of art block, art is fun when you're good at something so there's nothing more satisfying and uplifting than being reminded what your strengths are
if you struggle on a particular spot (anatomy, hands, composition, ect...) its great to look up tutorial or watch speedpaint !! it depends on the person but when you watch speedpaint or see tutorial, it kinda motivate you to draw and improve, plus you can always figure out which technique works for you ! the trick is to draw the same thing over and over until your muscle memories improve and by that time you've already figured out what you're doing qnd move on to the next part !
i also suggest tracing your favourite artists, don't post or claim it as yours, just trace it to study their strokes, how they do each part and what kind of shapes they do so you know what to do !
definitely take breaks when you need to, im taking breaks rn due to artblock and burnt out to do something else and it rlly improve ur efficiency cause youre not stressed
have fun ! when you're learning how to draw enjoy the process and if you dont, take a break. putting pressure onto yourself and constantly feeling discouraging can affect your art too so make sure to take your time on it cc:

my breathing js shallow and i feel dizzy and want to vomit all the time... What tf is happening to me and why is this happening at the start of classes? All my profs were absent today so i didnt attend any class.
I am losing my sense of time... Every day feels like a year. Its probably because i am not feeling well. I hope i get it together soon. Ive been drinkimg less water too because i cant move around much.

2. Do the assignment my therapist taught me
To do this, i will find a private space no one csn read over my shoulder. Likely the bed against the corner. Turn off wifi on my phone. Copy instructions for assignment. Open up my writing app. Paste instructions for assignment on writing app. Start assignment.
3. Start working on my lab exercises
To do this, i will get my laptop. Prepare yellow pad paper, calculator, pen and stim toy. Charge my phone far away so i cant use it. Log into our school website. Access that course. OPEN THE FIRST EXERCISE, dont look at anything else. Follow instructions, may include opening mathlab and simulink. Open the piazza for that class so i can look st questions others asked already. If i have trouble with something, i will log into messenger on desktop to ask questions.
4. Make some progess on my passion project
No set instructions here, just follow my heart! But if im stuck: finish researching philippine weapons. Assign weapons to oc's. Work on oc's personalities first. Check my notebook for notes on my oc's.

starting anew!
hi! if by the odd chance you knew me from my old blog, i realized that i was restricted from carrying out a lot of functions i might want to in the future if i were to grow my blog (it was a sideblog to an old, 2013 blog i had and when i replied to comments or respond to asks it’d be as my primary). so instead i decided to create a new account so that lycho could be my primary blog! since i did have a few posts that i wanted to keep for history sake, this is just going to be a mega post of my past few posts: 
apr 6, 2020 - the beginning
day 1 of my journey with ux!
frankly, i’ve been on this journey for the past two years (ever since discovering it) but i feel as though i haven’t made any real progress. i’ve always claimed i wanted to grow and learn more about the field, yet those goals never showed in my day-to-day actions.
this blog is a collection of my progress on this journey to keep myself accountable. the goal is facebook in a year, baby!
i know it’s super idealistic and quite tough for a second year like me who’s not even in a design program (business, actually). but i still want to try. i want to do something for myself for once.
that is why i am committing 4 hours everyday to honing my craft. whether that is learning about ux through watching youtube tutorials, skillshare course, or reading medium articles, or actually practicing the craft by making redesigns or wireframes, i will dedicate this time strictly to advancing my expertise within the field. and this blog exists to keep up with my every step of the way :)
apr 8, 2020 - website overhaul
today I worked on cleaning up the modularity of my existing website a bit, making use of consistent classes instead of hard-coding like i used to! oh how i love modularity!
small win: making a navbar that breaks out of the standard bounding box of the site’s content --> next goal is to make it a sticky navbar with js!
other than my website, yesterday I finished a skillshare course on user-centred design, albeit short, it was really valuable and it only motivates me to continue learning. I’m starting to realize how much I actually like doing this stuff and think it is something that really clicks and not just something im doing for the looks.
slowly but surely getting the hang of dedicated 4 hour time chunks to my craft - i failed yesterday and the day before (woke up around 9/10 instead of starting at 8:30) but today i did pretty well! took a short 20 min nap inbetween haha but I’m still proud of myself overall :)
it’s been pretty depressing and lonely lately with the quarantine (when the sun is shining so bright, teasing me grr..) but I want to get back into a routine and be productive although i do have my lazy days. it just overall makes me feel better because who knows how long we’ll have to live like this. might as well get used to it.
apr 9, 2020 - website overhaul
hi! so today i wanted to be very candid and share that i feel like i did fail today in terms of the goals i had set out for myself, though I reached 1/2 goals so that’s good! the first was to finish refining my website and publish it (check!), while the other was to finish the financial statements for my business assignment but alas that did not end up happening haha, but i forgive myself for it and know that tomorrow will be a new day!
I actually woke up early today (around 7:30, earlier than usual) and felt awake, yet mentally I just wanted to go back to sleep so I ended up getting up at 9:30. I then regretted it and beat myself up for it briefly for doing that, but I realized that I should let myself off in these strange times we’re all living in right now.
so, i think i really am going to get serious about my design journey! my only concern is that i feel like im stretching myself too thin - i have a full time design internship offer for this summer for a startup, as well as 2 leadership positions on clubs where I lead/work on the branding and design, but also at the same time I”m always at home so not sure what is reasonable and what is not. Because when I’m not doing that, I want to be self-learning, but I recently a discovered a mentorship program where I could be mentored by a startup founder to help scale her business, but again I feel like I’m stretching myself thin. though it’s a really good opportunity.
anywho, updates on my website like this post was supposed to be about is that i finally published it again after not liking how it looked before, and i think this revamp is a lot cleaner! proud of it. i try not to reveal many of my personal details on here bc i’m not sure who would actually be reading it, but this blog is just a way for me to track, myself, how i’m doing and to keep myself accountable :) i just didn’t want to set it to private cause it’s a hassle for me to always enter the password if i want to look at my blog.
lastly, i want to start consistently workout - and in the long term actually start a real blog where I write about my experiences, in actual coherent sentences! amazing. creative-wise i really want to start learning 3d illustration and blender, even though i’m an aspiring product designer but i just love 3d and motion, so idk might be stretching myself too thin again but i feel like I need to stretch my creative muscles this way and push myself as a creator. also starting the daily ui challenge again tomorrow after giving up a few months ago - haha!
let’s see how this one pans out :)
apr 10, 2020 - learning + starting anew
today i started two new things !!
restarted daily ui challenge after quitting a week in last year
started to learn blender ! !
i still feel like i failed today because i mostly sat around doing nothing OTHER than design, which just affirms to me that im truly passionate about this stuff for only having motivation to do it (or just a strong will against my homework for uni still....either way im taking it)
although i’m not that great at blender yet and felt frustrated during the process, when i got the end result i realized i like how it turned out despite it not being perfect, and it’s inspiration for me to keep learning and expanding on my skills :)
same with daily ui - i found that my approach this time compared when i literally knew NOTHING about ux was very different.
for example, something I already notice I'm doing differently from the last time is focusing less on decoration and more on practicality, actually naming/grouping layers and leveraging design systems, and injecting personality to make the experience delightful. I'm also limiting myself to two hours now (though this one took about an hour) so I have more time to do some research, sketch and wireframe before styling.
looking forward to a better day tomorrow! i might do a little less design (maybe just a daily ui shot) so i can focus on actually tackling the report i’m supposed to finish as well as study for an upcoming exam, so we will see! feeling good :))

  WASHINGTON— Documents released by U.S. regulators Tuesday confirmed that Pfizer’s vaccine was strongly protective against COVID-19 and appeared safe — offering the world’s first detailed look at the evidence behind the shots.
The positive review from the Food and Drug Administration sets the stage for a decision allowing the vaccine’s initial use within days. FDA regulators posted their analysis online even as across the Atlantic, Britain began vaccinating its oldest citizens with the shots, which were co-developed with BioNTech.
But the U.S. judges experimental vaccines in a unique way: On Thursday, the FDA will convene what’s essentially a science court that will debate — in public and livestreamed — just how strong the data backing the shots really is. That public vetting is considered key to bolstering confidence in the shots ahead of what’s expected to be the largest vaccination effort in U.S. history.
A panel of independent scientists will pick apart the FDA’s first-pass review before recommending whether the vaccine appears safe and effective enough for millions of Americans. The FDA typically follows the committee’s advice and if it gives the green light, the first recipients would be health care workers and nursing home residents, according to plans laid out by each state.
Pfizer CEO Albert Bourla declined to predict how quickly FDA might issue a decision.
“They need to take as much time as they need to feel comfortable. It’s very important for the trust of the vaccine from the people,” he said at a news conference in Geneva.
It’s one of several vaccines in the pipeline being tested in the hope of ending the pandemic. The FDA later this month will consider a COVID-19 vaccine by Moderna and the National Institutes of Health.
Weighing the data
Pfizer and its German partner BioNTech previously reported the shots appeared 95% effective at preventing mild to severe COVID-19 disease in a large, ongoing study. That’s based on the first 170 infections detected. Only eight of the infections were among volunteers given the real vaccine while the rest had received a dummy shot.
FDA’s reviewers agreed that the shots were strongly protective. And of special concern, they worked about as well in older adults, too, the agency confirmed. Among volunteers over age 55, there were three cases of COVID-19 infection who were vaccinated and 48 among placebo recipients. Five of the cases were among people 75 or older, and all had received the dummy shots.
While FDA noted that protection begins to appear two weeks after the first dose, full protection wasn’t calculated until after the second dose. No one yet knows how long that protection lasts, something the still unfinished study eventually will need to answer.
“We’re looking at the best possible data,” Dr. Paul Offit of Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia and an FDA adviser recently cautioned. “People worry, reasonably, how about six months later?”
In the two months that volunteers were tracked so far after the second dose, FDA’s reviewers said protection hadn’t begun waning.
The other critical issue: Safety. FDA reviewers said the vaccine has “a favorable safety profile, with no specific safety concerns” that would prevent a decision to allow emergency use.
Side effects
The main side effects are injection-site pain or flu-like reactions that indicate the immune system is revving up. Those tend to last a day or two and are most common after the second dose: More than half of adults under 55 experienced fatigue or headache, about a third reported chills or muscle pain, and 16% had a fever. Older adults were less likely to experience those reactions, and the FDA said they were considered severe in less than 5% of participants.
The FDA found no serious side effects among the more than 37,000 volunteers who’ve been tracked for at least two months after their last dose, the time period when historically any vaccination problems appear.
Some vaccine recipients experienced appendicitis and three developed Bell’s palsy, a temporary facial paralysis, during the study, but FDA said they occurred at rates common in the general population.
The study excluded volunteers with prior diagnoses of COVID-19, but researchers were anxious to learn how the vaccine would work in people who’ve already been infected and didn’t know it. Only 3% of study participants fell into that category, according to blood samples taken when they enrolled. There’s little data from that small subset of volunteers but, the FDA reviewers noted that previously infected people can be at risk of reinfection “and could benefit from vaccination.”
Key questions
Another key question: how protective is the shot against severe cases of the disease? Four of the study’s 170 confirmed COVID-19 cases were severely ill, and only one of them had received vaccine instead of dummy shots. That participant was only classified as a severe case because of temporary low oxygen and wasn’t hospitalized.
Other key questions ahead of Thursday’s meeting:
* Were the shots adequately tested in Black, Hispanic and other communities hard-hit by the pandemic, to know how well the vaccine works in those populations?
* Does the vaccine protect against asymptomatic infection, or could the vaccinated still unknowingly spread the virus?
* What should pregnant women be told about vaccination, since they weren’t tested in Pfizer’s study?
Studies in children as young as 12 are just beginning.
Emergency vaccinations could begin before Pfizer’s 44,000-person study is complete, and answering some of those questions will require keeping that study going. Health authorities are wrestling with how to do so in a way that’s fair to placebo recipients who justifiably would want to get the real vaccine.
That access “is top of mind for many,” Pfizer and BioNTech recently wrote trial participants. The companies said they’re exploring ways to let placebo recipients switch to the vaccine group once they meet eligibility criteria for early access — if they’re health workers, for instance, or when the line opens for other essential workers or people over age 65.
On the safety front, study volunteers will be monitored for two years but even studies of tens of thousands of people can’t spot a complication that only strikes 1 in a million. So the government also is gearing up for unprecedented monitoring of recipients once emergency vaccinations get underway.

Would you briefly explain what is meant by proptosis?  How does teprotumumab work? Response: This study provides pooled efficacy data from the Phase 2 and 3 clinical trials of teprotumumab showing that the recently FDA-approved medicine effectively reduces proptosis, also known as eye bulging, in patients with Thyroid Eye Disease (TED) regardless of age, gender and smoking status. Proptosis is one of the most debilitating symptoms of TED, especially given the accompanying pain, vision impairment and emotional distress. Teprotumumab is a fully human monoclonal antibody and a targeted inhibitor of the IGF-1 receptor. In patients with Thyroid Eye Disease, the IGF-1 receptor is overexpressed on orbital tissues and when activated, causes inflammation and enlargement of ocular muscles, expansion of orbital tissue and fat and forward displacement of the eye, resulting in eye bulging. The proteins in teprotumumab target and bind to the IGF-1 receptor and inhibit its function, thereby reducing inflammation, preventing tissue expansion behind the eye, and preventing muscle and fat tissue remodeling. Based on this mechanism of action, it is believed that teprotumumab addresses the underlying biology of the disease.   MedicalResearch.com: What are the main findings?  Response: The data show that teprotumumab effectively reduces proptosis in patients with Thyroid Eye Disease regardless of age, gender and smoking status. Specifically, at week 24 of treatment across all subgroups, significantly more patients receiving teprotumumab experienced a clinically meaningful improvement of at least 2 mm in proptosis compared to those receiving placebo. Of note, we know that smoking is a significant risk-factor for TED and can make it more serious and difficult to manage. In this analysis, we found that 70 percent of smokers in the teprotumumab treatment group were proptosis responders, with a mean reduction of almost 3 millimeters – which is comparable to results seen in non-smokers.

Running rehab specialist Matt Phillips explains the benefits of sports massage for runners.
Some runners swear by it, others say it’s a waste of money. The fact that most elite runners have regular massage suggests there must be something in it, but how valuable a tool is it for recreational runners? Is there any evidence it reduces injury or increases performance? Let’s take a look…
What Does Massage Do?
The most commonly proposed benefits of massage are it helps flushes away lactic acid, improves circulation, breaks down muscle/fascia adhesions. It may therefore come as a surprise to hear that none of these are supported by research. In fact, application of a little basic science suggests that such claims are either unlikely or simply not true.
What? So all that time & money I’ve invested has been for nothing? No, hear me out – I am a big fan of massage: there is no doubt in my mind that it can help runners, just not in the way you think, and probably not as much as you may have been lead to believe.
Flushing Myths
Modern research has made it quite clear that muscle soreness is not caused by lactic acid build up. Lactic acid (or more accurately ‘lactate’) actually clears from the blood stream the moment you stop running, so the idea that massage helps ‘flush it out’ makes no sense.
How about flushing out toxins? Well, in all honesty, despite a lot of therapists using that as reason, no one can actually say what these ‘toxins’ actually are. It’s an idea that sounds good but is certainly not scientifically based.
Linked with these flushing myths is the idea that massage ‘improves circulation’. Despite this being a very common claim, any increase in circulation would actually be minimal. Circulation increases when you raise metabolic demand; in other words, giving a massage will increase circulation far more than receiving one.
Breaking Down Knots
Ok, stay with me. Remember, I am a fan of massage and will get to the benefits soon. We just have to clear up the misconceptions first. Many runners put up with (and even expect) considerable discomfort during a sports massage in the belief that the therapist is applying the required force to break down ‘knots’ or ‘scar tissue’. This idea is, once again, a myth; surgeons use scalpels to cut through scar tissue, so the belief that pressure from a thumb or elbow could break it down is obviously misplaced.
If your muscles feel more relaxed or lengthened after a sports massage, fantastic. But it’s not because the therapist has managed to force physical changes in your body’s tissues. It’s actually quite scary to think that a human being could do that with their bare hands.     
How Does Massage Help Then?
So, what does massage do then? Studies show that massage after exercise can reduce the intensity of post exercise soreness. So what is happening? Some of you may already be asking ‘why does it matter how it works, as long as it does?’ The answer to that question is as follows: if we know how something works, we can tweak it to make it work even better. If you (and your therapist) truly believe that the deep tissue massage is ‘breaking down scar tissue’, you will both be happy to put up with considerable pain, with shouts of “this hurts like hell but I know it’s necessary” and “no pain, no gain!”
Though there is a lot about pain that we do not yet understand, what we do know is that allowing a therapist to pummel you can actually lead to a delay in recovery. Pain is an output from a nervous system that is essentially trying to protect you from real or perceived damage. Trying to fight pain doesn’t make sense because all you’ll ultimately do is wind the nervous system up even more and cause it to output even more pain. This is why stress, poor nutrition, lack of food, etc. can all increase pain. They all cause the nervous system to feel more vulnerable. And this is where we now reveal the most likely mechanism behind massage… it relaxes the nervous system.
Relaxing the Nervous System
Studies show that massage can reduce both depression & anxiety. It relaxes the nervous system, removing threat and giving it less reason to output pain or restrict movement. This is why after a suitably deep massage we often feel less pain and can move more freely. The effect will not necessarily last forever (we have all seen how the initial pain often returns after a few days) but it can be a way to speed up recovery, allowing us to train more intensely without increasing the risk of overload and injury. We all enjoy a firm massage but putting up with too high a pressure runs the risk of doing the opposite.
Conclusion
Massage can help runners, just probably not for the reasons traditionally given. By relaxing the nervous system (as opposed to winding it up), massage can aid recovery, allowing you to train vigorously without increasing risk of injury. The skill of the massage therapist therefore lies in applying a suitable amount of pressure at the right time. Talk of ‘breaking down scar tissue’ or ‘realigning tissues’ is outdated and can lead to runners putting up with unnecessary pain that can actually delay recovery.

MANKATO — With more youth, high school and college sports ramping up this fall, a Mankato sports medicine doctor cautioned athletes to practice patience before returning to the practice fields after a COVID-19 diagnosis.
Research into COVID-19’s long-term health impacts is still in its early stages. But early inquiries suggest the disease can cause heart muscle inflammation known as myocarditis.
Risks associated with the heart damage mean athletes should wait at least 14 days from the start of the illness and at least seven to 14 days after symptoms resolve before returning to physical activity, said Dr. Thomas Finn, sports medicine physician at Mankato Clinic.
“If it’s potentially having a child rest from a sport for an extra week or two and a follow-up exam to avoid a life-threatening condition, it’s definitely worth it,” he said.
His recommendation goes further than the minimum guidelines for sports spelled out by the Minnesota Department of Health in September. The agency stated individuals who are sick with COVID “need to stay out for 10 days from symptom onset.”
More caution could be warranted considering how much remains unknown about COVID’s lingering impacts on young people. Although rarer among young people, myocarditis has been identified in both symptomatic and asymptomatic COVID patients.
Potentially serious complications from myocarditis include heart failure and abnormal heart rhythms. Doctors can identify myocarditis through abnormalities detected on electrocardiograms, or EKGs, and other tests.
Myocarditis often resolves itself through rest without causing permanent complications, although not always, which is why health experts are stressing caution.
Dr. Ruth Lynfield, Minnesota’s state epidemiologist, brought up studies linking COVID to heart problems in mid-September when the Big Ten college conference announced it was bringing back football. The Minnesota State High School League was also considering starting up football at the time and has since done so.
“There are some people who do fine with this, but there are others, including young people, who do not do fine,” Lynfield said. “ … We really don’t have a sense of all the things this virus can do.”
Finn expressed a similar sentiment this week.
“Part of the reason we’re having so much caution about this is we just don’t have all the answers,” he said.
As a result, he recommends athletes young and old to get the OK from their doctors before resuming physical activity post-diagnosis. The road back to competition should include rest first, a medical examination second, and then a gradual return to exercise once the athlete is cleared.
The type and severity of symptoms and any underlying conditions and age could change the timeline. Many professional and college athletes, for example, opted against playing their seasons due to underlying conditions in themselves or their loved ones.

Different people will experience different results with different types of creatine and there are a lot of different types. Monohydrate is pretty much the most basic form of creatine, probably the cheapest, and it happens to be the most studied. Creatine monohydrate has proven itself in study after study so it’s a pretty safe bet to start with. There are many other types like kre akalybn for example that claim to reduce bloating and claim to eliminate the need to cycle off of creatine. However not one type of creatine has the kind of backing with scientific evidence that monohydrate has. My favorite creatine brand is probably the cheapest one. It’s just plain Monohydrate from Now sports. I used to take cell tech hardcore when I used to bulk and it would always help me put on some weight. However this was like 5 years ago so they’ve probably change the formula by now and the old formula used to have tons of sugar in it. Like I said now if I take creatine it’ll be the plain monohydrate from Now sports.
Next up are your stimulants and your supplements that give you energy. Nitric oxide, caffeine, vitamin b, and beta alanine again that’s all you need. Nitric oxide will help give you a great pump during your workouts and will also give you a bunch of energy and help you squeeze out those last couple reps. When people talk about having a child slightly later in life, the emphasis is often put on women and their so-called “ticking biological clock”. However, new research has shown that men who delay starting a family can also experience fertility problems and run the risk of harming their kids’ health.
The new study, published in the journal Maturitas and led by Rutgers University, reviewed 40 years of research looking at pregnancies involving older men and noted a higher risk of premature birth, stillbirth, low birth weight, newborn seizures, and birth defects, such as congenital heart disease and cleft palate. As these children got older, they also had a higher risk of childhood cancers, mental health problems, cognitive disorders, and autism.
There is no clear definition of exactly when in life “advanced paternal age” begins, although most of the studies analyzed suggest it starts sometime between 35 and 45 years of age.
“While it is widely accepted that physiological changes that occur in women after 35 can affect conception, pregnancy and the health of the child, most men do not realize their advanced age can have a similar impact,” study author Gloria Bachmann, director of the Women’s Health Institute at Rutgers’ Robert Wood Johnson Medical School, said in a statement.
Despite these dangers, the trend of older fathers is on the rise. The study found that the number of kids born to fathers over the age of 45 has risen 10 percent in the US over the past 40 years, most likely due to assisted reproductive technology and wider social changes.
The study didn’t specifically look for the exact cause of the links; it simply focused on the associations between advanced paternal age and wider health problems.
Nevertheless, the researchers do cite several factors that could be driving the apparent outcomes. First of all, there’s the natural decline in testosterone that men experience as they age. Second, the quality of sperm is also a concern. Sperm stem cells split and divide around 23 times each year after puberty. Each time this process happens, there’s a potential for errors as DNA gets copied, resulting in around two new mutations each year. Mutations that occur in the sperm at this point can then be passed onto the offspring they go on to produce. As other studies have shown, fathers contribute more mutations to their children than mothers.
On top of health problems, the study also found that older men struggled with fertility issues even if their partner was younger than 25.
“Just as people lose muscle strength, flexibility, and endurance with age, in men, sperm also tend to lose ‘fitness’ over the life cycle,” Bachmann added.
The team notes that there is much less scientific research and public awareness about the potential consequences of advanced paternal age and, as ever, further research is needed before any firm conclusions can be drawn. However, the researchers call on healthcare professionals to raise more awareness of the potential risks.
They even suggest that some men might want to consider the use of sperm banks “before their 35th or, at least, their 45th birthday” to ensure their swimmers are still in good shape.

How to Exercise While Fasting
Before I get into the meat of this post, let’s make one thing clear: You should stay active while fasting. You shouldn’t just sit around. You shouldn’t give up. It’s actually imperative that you exercise while fasting.
Everything we do, or don’t do, sends a message. If you stay sedentary during a fast, you’re telling your body several bad messages.
What Not Exercising While Fasting Does to Your Fitness
It tells your body you’re too weak to handle a fast. In previous incarnations of the human, fasting preceded food procurement. You didn’t stroll over to the fridge for a meal. You worked for it. You hunted (and gathered) for it. You exerted yourself to fill that empty belly. Simply lying around during a fast meant you’d die. Don’t tell yourself you’re too weak to handle the fast.
It tells your body you don’t need all that muscle tissue. If you don’t use your muscles during a fast, your body will consider them fair game. Those muscles can provide a big dose of amino acids that convert into glucose, and if you’re not using them, you’ll lose them to make glucose. “This bozo obviously doesn’t need those biceps, let’s dig in!”
Indeed, one of the reasons most people lose muscle when reducing calories and losing weight is that they fail to lift weights. Another big reason is they fail to eat enough protein, of course, but simply by lifting weights during calorie deficits, we can retain muscle mass. Since a fast is by definition an extreme reduction in calories, exercise becomes all the more important.
Okay, so exercising during a fast is a Good Move. How should you exercise?
The short story is that for short fasts (from the shortened eating window variety up to 24–36 hours), you should exercise the way you normally do.
For extended fasts, from 48 hours to a week or more, you should still exercise, but a little differently than “normal.”
Let’s get into it:
How to Exercise During a Longer Fast
1. Walk as much as possible.
The simplest form of exercise that everyone should do while fasting is walking. There’s no trick or science to walking while fasting. You just walk while not eating. You can do as much as you can squeeze in, because fasted walking isn’t just easy and not stressful—it’s anti-stress. It keeps you busy when you can’t think of anything but eating, when fasting is becoming a chore. Research indicates that walking while fasting is no more stressful than walking on eating days; in fact, fasting subjects spontaneously maintain their daily step count without affecting the benefits.
What are the benefits?
If you have trouble sticking to the fast—if you’re the type who wants to eat because you’re bored and can’t think of anything else to do, you need to walk as much as possible during a fast.
In those who are already pretty lean but want to get very lean, fasted walking can be effective. The classic bodybuilding trick for cutting body fat is the fasted morning walk. Wake up, consume no calories, and go for a brisk 20- to 30-minute walk as the fat swims around your body. This is the hardest body composition transition—from lean to very lean. Lean is what the body “wants,” and going lower requires getting over the natural tendency to hold on to diminished body fat stores. A fasted walk, jog, or cycling session performed in the aerobic zone almost forces the body fat to release into circulation. Insulin is low. Sensitivity is high. The stage is perfect, in theory.
2. Lift weights to preserve muscle.
On an extended fast, lifting weights is imperative. On a short-term fast, lifting weights is a great way to break the fast and augment the anabolic response from feeding. Your strategies for both will be different.
If you’re in the middle of a long-term fast and you want to stave off muscle loss:
Lift at a higher intensity for lower reps.
Don’t lift to failure.
Don’t max out.
On a scale of 1–10, with 1 being effortless and 10 taking all you have to complete, stay around a 6–8.
Keep several reps in the tank.
Stick to full-body compound movements rather than isolation. You want to hit the entire body with a powerful stimulus. You want to send your whole body a message, not just your biceps or your glutes.
This will provide a strong-enough stimulus to maintain muscle mass without being so stressful that you start breaking down more muscle mass than you can maintain.
3. Do “easy” cardio.
If you’re going to do “cardio” or endurance training during an extended fast, keep the intensity low to stay in the “aerobic zone”—the heart rate zone where you’re burning primarily body fat. A fasting human should be able to remain active in that zone almost indefinitely without needing much, or any, food. To determine your aerobic heart rate, subtract your chronological age from 180:
If you’re 20, your aerobic heart rate zone would be 160 beats per minute. Don’t exceed 160 BPM when endurance training in a fasted state.
If you’re 50, your aerobic heart rate zone would be 130 BPM. Don’t exceed 150 BPM when endurance training in a fasted state.
This will feel “easy,” and that’s the entire point. You’re not dipping into glycogen stores or increasing sugar cravings because you aren’t burning much sugar at all. You’re just (mostly) burning your own body fat.
I’d stay away from more intense endurance training, HIIT, and sprinting during a long fast unless it’s at the end and you plan on breaking the fast shortly afterwards. That kind of activity will make it much harder to fast. While you can definitely lift weights midway through a five-day fast and come out the other end okay, you probably won’t do so well doing a dozen hill sprints midway through that same fast.
How to Exercise During a Short-Term Fast
If you’re doing short-term fasting, train as you normally would. Evidence suggests that not only will your performance not suffer, but the training effect may also be augmented if you time your eating right. Here’s what research tells us:
In one recent study, males on a time-restricted eating schedule who lifted to failure for 8–12 reps for four sets ate 650 fewer calories than the non-fasting group, but retained all their muscle mass and even made gains on strength and muscle endurance. That said, the non-fasting group made more size gains.
Another study in women found that resistance training on a time-restricted eating schedule was fine and led to muscle gains as long as calorie intake and protein intake were maintained.
A 2009 study found that, compared to athletes who lifted weights after breakfast, athletes who lifted weights in the morning in a fasted state had an augmented anabolic response to a post-workout protein-and-carb shake.
There’s also merit in maintaining the fast for a few more hours after your workout. This will really augment the growth hormone release—which is great for fat burning and tissue maintenance. I do this about half the time I work out in a fasted state.
There are no hard-and-fast rules to exercising while fasting. After all, you’re still you. You know what works for you. You know what makes you tick.
But if you want me to generalize? Most people on a longer fast will do best going for a walk every day and lifting at least once or twice.
