Got a little carried away.

Corvidwish is actively trying to figure out the anatomical characteristic that is tied to language (unfortunately, she doesn’t have the internet or textbooks at her disposal)… however, some of you did figure it out! I loved reading your theories, guesses, and all of your reasonings for those theories.

It is based on heart anatomy!

Mammals and extant archosaurs (birds & crocodilians) have four chambered hearts, while reptiles (excluding crocodilians) & amphibians have three chambers and fish have two. Fish lack vocal cords so I think their languages would be built on sounds they produce with their muscles, swim bladders and bones… clicking, vibrations, etc… idk, fishspeak isn’t important to the plot at all but it’s fun to think about!

Four is a good number :o)

Also Sparrowspots is here! My sweet country farmcat. They are agender and use they/them pronouns, it's just that Oriolepaw is forming gender opinions for the first time give her some slack. Also, some more backstory crumbs! I wonder what it all means...

Issue #1: "The First Time"

Here is finally is, the first issue of The Deep Blue Dark! This is an experimental comic/writing project about dogs and being trans and murder and a whole lot of other things! I'll be updating it as regularly as I can, since I am still getting used to a digital medium for art. The plot is all original, as is the world that the characters inhabit, but I take plenty of inspiration from works such as Warriors and its many fan-interpretations.

Please do feel free to send me asks as I will always do my best to respond! I love to hear from people who enjoyed my work, and all feedback does motivate me to keep posting.

Oh, also, if it wasn't clear from the first issue, this comic will be getting about as dark as I can personally stomach. Everything will be tagged to the best of my ability, but you've been warned.

The Dark isn't kind. The Dark isn't cruel. It simply and hideously is.

Here we are! The start of something great and terrible! Defiance has arrived, and we have no choice but to wait and see if anyone makes it out alive.

I never quite got to work Hush Puppy's fate as much into the comic as I wanted, so I'll go into it a little more here. She did starve to death, like Egrettail says. As Thrasher put more time into "training" his growing kits and less into hunting, Hush Puppy got less food and gave up a lot of her own for the kittens. A combination of that and pure stress just sapped everything from her.

Also, I feel this may need to be said; yes, the dream canine with blue eyes is Rainhaze, not Prowl, but Pinepaw doesn't know that. It is dramatic irony.

Solar diety of the sun, war, fire, the south, and sacrifice. Widely respected by all groups as the ‘hero’ god. Symbols; Hummingbirds, the Sun, Light, Orange

Xipe-Totec [Our Lord The Flayed One]

Rebirth deity of agriculture, the east, goldsmiths, warfare and disease. The creator of war and renown doctor. Often sighted by prophets to depict good or bad omens. Symbols; Maize seeds, Quail, Gold, Green

Quetzalcoatl [Feathered Serpent]

Wind deity of the west, arts, curiosity, joy, and life. Primary creator of felines. Respected and acknowledged as an excitable deity easily called upon in times of need. Symbols; Wind, Green Jay, Feathers, Blue

Tezcatlipoca [Smoking Mirror]

Chaos deity of the north, chaos, obsidian, night, and jaguars. The antithesis of everything Huitzilopotchli stands for. The only Tezcatlipoca that is named Tezcatlipoca. Infamously feared as a troublemaker who stops and nothing to destroy what his siblings create. Symbols; Jaguars, Obsidian, Black Smoke, Purple
