For fic finder: I am trying to find a fic I read recently (within the last 6 months or so) where Wei Wuxian cultivates a resentful energy core but it was held outside his body in the Yin Tiger Tally. Lan Wangji doesn’t know that, so he convinces Wei Wuxian to give up the Tiger Tally as a gesture of peace. Everyone gathers around to watch and are horrified when as Wei Wuxian crushes the Tiger Tally in his hand and the Tally crumbles to dust, Wei Wuxian keels over in terrible agony at losing his core a second time. I think Wangji rushes over to help but Wen Qing pushes him away. It wasn't Decay by antebunny (although that is a good fic!!). Any thoughts? Thank you!

18. Hello! I hope you can help me find this one, because I’m not having much luck; Wei Ying agrees to do what the sects want in exchange for the Lan sect taking in the Wen. He is basically imprisoned in the Unclean Realm and can’t practice demonic cultivation, and over time Nie Huaisand and Nie Mingjue start to warm up to him.

I think the one scene I remember most is a scene where Lan Huan asks Wei Ying if he can play for Nie Mingjue but Wei Ying says he can’t and admits that he has no golden core after making Lan Huan promise to keep it a secret. Hope this helps?

Cql is great. It will change your brain chemistry. It's so fucking campy and ridiculous and so full of love and drama, you won't think about anything else for at least 6 months. This is what happened to me at least - however, I watched it before reading mdzs so since I assume you know the source material, you might go in there with different expectations. Also, I watched it during the pandemic, desperately needing that serotonin that comes with selling your soul to a tv show.

While I personally loved cql, I was heavily disappointed with mdzs the novel (in parts maybe due to reading the FTL back then).

Fair warning, cql is very much an adaptation so there are some changes to the story.

Watching The Untamed is an experience that usually happens in 3 stages.

Stellar cast. You've got star-crossed lovers Wangxian despite the censorship because Wang Yibo (lwj) is a master of microexpressions. His acting is THAT good. Xiao Zhan as wwx is also immensely charming. Stay also tuned for the best angry grape ever and the most pathetic little meow meow nhs who doesn't know anything ever (or does he?) (watch cql to find out!!!)

Banger soundtrack, I still listen to it regularly. It's so epic and haunting.

Big focus on yi city arc. It's one of the best parts of the whole show. The drama is unparalleled.

Eh there's so many more reasons it's just been a while since I've really thought about cql

Edit: it's better written than the novel in many ways idk many character arcs and storylines are wrapped up in a more meaningful way. While the novel is plot driven, the show is more character driven so there is more emphasis on character growth and motives

I am all about Hualian 10000%. It's just a matter of preference, and I'll explain why I like one better than the other, but I'm not crapping on Wangxian shippers at all. Something for everyone haha!

Here's the thing. I like a lot about Wangxian. They've got a very Kirk/Spock thing a lot of the time that is eternally entertaining. But I just don't like the way they have sex. I dislike the way they have sex so much that it kind of retroactively made me less interested in the pairing as a whole. More specifically, I don't like how Lan Wangji does sex. People had warned me about it and I was like, "Eh, but I'm fine with CNC, all I need is that first C, so it's fiiiine." But. Nope. Thankfully this isn't a personal trigger for me, just a very firm preference, but I just...to quote myself in a previous post, "while the book did a good job convincing me that Wei Wuxian is into everything Lan Wangji does to him, it didn't do a good job convincing me that Lan Wangji knows that for sure, or is in control of himself, or would stop if Wei Wuxian didn't like something." That just isn't to my taste.

On the other hand, Hualian are also implied to be having rough and kinky sex, but there's much more of a feeling that they're communicating about it. I'm not expecting them to like, have a formal safeword or anything, but even just:

"Sorry, I went overboard last night," Hua Cheng apologized. It took a moment for Xie Lian to realize what he meant, and he quickly waved his hands. "Wh-what are you saying? That's not it at all--everything's fine!" Hua Cheng arched an eyebrow. "Is that so? If everything is fine even after that, does that mean I didn't go overboard last night? Does that mean I can...?"

Or

"Is gege not coming up to join me?" But if he went up there, when would Xie Lian have a a chance to come back down? At that point, they could forget about doing anything else for a while. "Nah." Xie Lian declined politely. "My San Lang has overworked himself." "Nah," Hua Cheng laughed. "How could San Lang ever be afraid of hard work when it comes to working gege hard?"

Like. They're goofy about it and Hua Cheng loves to tease Xie Lian but they are actually talking about sex when they're not having sex. There's a degree to which they're communicating outside of the heat of the moment. And even in the amnesia extra (which makes me feel so bad for Hua Cheng omg he's being surprisingly chill but I need to write some meta about how miserable he must be during that) Xie Lian's fuzzy memories of what he at first assumes was a rape are full of the sense of being gentled and cherished and of their fingers and red strings tangling even as he's held down and roughed up.

Also the chapter opening with,

Laughing, Xie Lian pushed Hua Cheng off him -- his crushing weight was making it hard to breathe. The heat and passion had yet to subside when something suddenly occurred to him. "Oh yeah, San Lang," he began offhandedly.

That's so stinking cute I can't. They are so comfortable. Nothing in their relationship overall or in the hints of their sex life we see implies in the slightest that Hua Cheng isn't in control of himself in the most important ways (I do tend to think of him being a shaking crying coming-too-soon mess the first few times, but that's a very different kind of out of control lol). He worships Xie Lian, literally. Lan Wangji has this underlying layer of horny anger born in a repressed childhood; Hua Cheng's horny is all built on reverence. THAT IS MY JAM.

As for SVSSS, I think I will probably read it if only to try to figure out what on earth its fandom is talking about. It's...like an isekai I think? Which is not usually my thing, but at this point I feel like I gotta round out the trio haha!

Eh, I don’t have any strong opinions on them? I’m not too much of a modern au fan in mdzs, because most of the fics misunderstand everything about wwx and wangxian and it ends up creating very terrible comparisons. I’ll only read modern aus from authors I trust or that have been recommended to me by people I trust.

I’m more open to them if they’re bingqiu, but only if one of two conditions are met: 1) Shen Jiu is not included anywhere in the work or 2) if he must be included, his canonical actions are not excused by the fic to make him out to be some uwu sad overprotective big brother.

allegedly? i don’t actually know because i don’t have much interest in what mxtx has to say about her works beyond what she has written in the text itself. not trying to harsh on anyone who enjoys her commentary, that is just not how i prefer to engage with authors or artists of works i like. but this is what the antis keep asserting to me over and over again in their arguments when i try to posit that wwx is not some morally unimpeachable and righteous good boy.

Political arranged marriage

Okay so this is actually a challenge option! For 1) how likely am i to write this fic trope and 2) whom for.

Because see, it's an interesting topic to me broadly speaking, but as it's used in fandom it's primarily a romance vehicle. A contrived scenario to set up a pairing in a Situation. Specifically a situation involving forced intimacy and externally imposed sexual pressure.

And like. It's not that I'm incapable of enjoying that, if it's the right blorbos handled in a way that works for me, it's a structure you can run a lot of fun dramas in, but I don't have anything I particularly want to deliver in that line, either.

Statistically at this time I'm most likely to find myself writing one of these about wangxian, because 1) my brain is in a rut help i have never cared about a ship like this in my life and 2) there are SO MANY of these damn fics in this fandom (modao zushi/the untamed), and historically 'high concentration of trope i find mildly annoying' has a high rate of inspiring me to process my feelings by producing my own iteration of that thing.

The Thing about wangxian politically arranged marriage scenario in particular is that it's a direct inversion of the context shaping their relationship in the canon.

Arranged marriages for political purposes require both parties to be actively embedded in high-status formal social webs which very proactively sanction their official attachment, regardless of personal sentiments, and any ensuing relationship develops within the framework of not being free to part.

All of this is the exact opposite of their situation; they are deliberately the exact opposite of this.

Now, if you engage with the thematic inversion on some level in your fic that's good fun, but if you try to edge awkwardly around it it gets very stale very fast. If I hadn't seen anyone doing anything fun with this I'd probably have been possessed and produced something by now, but I have, so it's eh. We're fine. It's fine.

More generally, I'm absolutely likely to depict politically arranged marriages, in general, but I don't know that it counts as doing the trope because I'm chiefly fascinated by all the ways these relationships can develop that aren't particularly close matches for romance as we typically block it out.

You know the bit in Fiddler on the Roof where after all the drama around love-matches rather than relying on the matchmaker, the dad asks the mom if she loves him, after like 30 years in a normal, traditional arranged marriage? And after initial bewilderment, having never considered the question before, she finally says she supposes she does, and he says he supposes he loves her too. Compelling. I'm intrigued.

If I'm going to write a political arranged marriage as a central feature of a story it's going to be about the social construct of matrimony and how it's conceptualized within the society in question. Necessarily this means it will also be about gender. The household as a sociological unit. Power and property.

It will also, obviously, be about politics.

So I'm much more likely to wind up doing this as a subplot in original fiction than as the premise of a fic, basically, but now I admit I am tempted to go figure out a premise for a one-shot political marriage fic for wangxian that I would find inherently interesting. I am easily baited, what can I say.

Alternate answer: i'm brain stuck in mdzs so technically the correct answer to this is like 20% and Jin Zixuan/Jiang Yanli because they're this in canon already and i'm basic like that.

“Lan Zhan!” Wei Ying’s voice is still music, bright and lilting and lovely, as he bounces into the room. Before him, he had not known the beauty of his own name. “Lan Zhan…! We’re about ready to go!”

Wei Ying does not, technically, teach classes of juniors in the Cloud Recesses. Uncle will, by his estimation, take two or three more years before he allows the Yiling Laozu to take such an official, prominent position before the rest of the cultivation world. But it causes slightly less of a stir to allow him to lead the older juniors in their first serious night hunts.

Less impressionable, Uncle calls them. Lan Wangji isn’t sure who he’s kidding: the juniors are all either fascinated by Wei Ying, if they don’t know him, or adore him, if they do: just ask Lan Jingyi, their most ardent defender. Or, of course, Sizhui: while to anyone else he will speak in his usual polite, diplomatic terms about the once-outlaw now comfortably settling within the walls of Cloud Recesses, Lan Wangji can tell exactly how closely he hangs on every word of the father he had lost for so much of his life. He cannot begrudge his son that, certainly. Nor any of the others: his heart says that Wei Ying is unparalleled but his head reminds him that all of his young clanmates deserve the chance to reach the same brilliance.

Wei Ying’s eyes shine the way they always have, back when they were his own, back when Lan Wangji had not understood the way that look made his blood sing.

“Eh, Lan Zhan…” Wei Ying crouches down next to him. His brush freezes over the letter he had been writing: with his brother still in seclusion, he has twice the tedious duties to take care of. “You won’t miss me too much, will you?”

Everything in him roars and clamors not to leave Wei Ying, to stay by his side and cling to him tight, so he will never again slip through his fingers and fall from the world, from Lan Wangji’s hand and his life. But never his heart. Never, never.

Wei Ying blinks, as he's answered only by an intense stare, and opens his mouth to say something more. But before he can, Lan Wangji’s hand flashes out, fast as a striking snake, to grab around the back of his neck and yank him into a kiss.

A noise of surprise escapes Wei Ying, which quickly dissolves into soft, muffled laughter as he deepens the kiss, clutching the front of Lan Wangji's robes.

Lan Wangji only holds tighter, willing every last sensation to be imprinted indelibly on his mind: the tickle of his hair falling in front of his eyes, the scent of his skin, the way Wei Ying’s forehead presses against his own. He bites at Wei Ying's lower lip, a small voice at the back of his head warning him not to get carried away. He must hold himself back to avoid accidentally drawing blood.

A wolf. Fine, then, if they say so. Let the rest of the world babble however they please, so long as he gets to keep him. Devour him and keep him forever, out of the reach of anyone who still wants to rip him away. He will dig his heels in, bite, tear, do anything he has to, if only for the chance to kiss Wei Ying like this just once more.

Still, when Wei Ying gently tugs his head back, he reluctantly retracts his arm. It's worth it, though, to see the grin on Wei Ying's face properly.

"You know, you could have just said yes," Wei Ying teases. "Don’t worry, we’ll be back soon!”

“I’m certain the juniors will tell me all about it when you return,” he says. The young ones have always been so very excited to see him, for reasons he doesn’t quite understand, but appreciates all the same. “Be well.”

“Of course!”

Wei Ying gets to his feet and goes, lifting his hand in a half-wave as he sweeps out the door. Lan Wangji’s eyes don’t leave his back until he’s gone, and even then it takes him a moment to look away from the space he has left. At least now, instead of just the notes of the qin vanishing unanswered into the night air, he has the solace of knowing that he will return.

Turning back to the scroll at his desk, he sees that in his fervor, he dropped the wet brush directly onto the letter he’d been composing. A quite irreparable blemish: he’ll have to start over. Fine, then. He’s well acquainted with fresh beginnings by now.

As he puts his brush to new paper, it occurs to Lan Wangji that he never spoke a word to his father in his life, much less wrote any letter. He isn’t sure whether he regrets that or not, or if he really would do anything different were Qingheng-jun still around now. But sometimes he imagines what it might be like to tell him that he had not been the only one.

me exactly six months later while in the middle of re watching the untamed for the third time: OH MY- IT'S CALLED WU JI BECAUSE IT'S THE OTHER PART OF THEIR NAMES THAAT'S SO CUTE!!!

👀👀👀👀👀 Oh?

The sangchengqing au!!!! The very first entry in my "put jiang cheng in a throuple and give him a baby" agenda lol

It's a low stakes modern au/boarder line crack fic where wen qing and nie huaisang meet at bar, get drunk in attempts of stress release, and accidentally making a baby out of the deal. Wen qing decides to keep the baby, nie huaisang decides he'll give whatever wen qing will take from him, and jiang cheng shows up in town looking for his brother.

Jiang cheng becomes nie huaisang's flatmate and angsts his new crushes, wen qing starts to learn she doesn't have to do everything on her own, and nie huaisang might just have found a purpose in life. Overall there's lots of shenanigans, fun scheming, and lots of things i personally enjoy. Like babies.

Plus there's neilan "everyone's older brothers who have been in love forever" and wangxian "chaotic speedrun fools in love" in the background watching (and helping) our trio get their happy ending.

"Wei Wuxian!" Jiang Cheng says, breaking the no yelling rule. "Did you knock someone up?"

The woman, Qing-jie, rolls her eyes. "No, Huaisang knocked me up."

Jiang Cheng wishes he could throw his hands in the air and groan.What had his brother gotten himself into? But he doesn't do any of that. He straightens his posture and keeps his mouth shut.

"Why are we talking about me when I'm not in the room to hear it?" asks a new voice coming from behind Jiang Cheng.

A shorter man, with long hair pulled back from face in intricate braids, brushes past him in a beeline for the couch. Jiang Cheng watches him pass Qing-jie a large glass of juice and pull out a folded hand fan from his back pocket.

Qing-jie lifts up her legs from the cushion and resettles them on top of the man's lap when he slides into the empty spot. And then he uses the hand fan to waft air across her exposed skin where the electric fan doesn't reach.

His brother scrambles into an overstuffed armchair shoved into the corner, leaving Jiang Cheng the only person still standing up.

"Don't be a weirdo, A-Cheng." Wei Wuxian says. He's smirking because he knows he let Jiang Cheng look dumb on purposely. "Take a seat, stay awhile."

The only remaining seat in the room besides sitting directly on the floor is a second, smaller armchair that looks like it belongs on the street or in a dumpster more than inside someone's apartment. And knowing his brother, that's exactly where it came from.

He huffs a bit but sits there anyway.

"As much as I love the sudden arrival of a handsome stranger, why don't we begin with some introductions?" Huaisang proposes.

"I'm Jiang Wanyin, and-"

"No need to be so formal here, Chengcheng!" interrupts Wei Wuxian. He turns to the others on the couch. "This is Wen Qing, my best friend and one of my roommates, and Nie Huaisang, my best friend and dedicated partner-in-crime-and-master-theses. And they're having a baby together! Qing-jie, Nie-xiong, this is my little brother, Jiang Cheng."

The way Wei Wuxian was talking, like he hadn't walked out of the Jiang house one night without a hint at his plans to leave, and without any intention of coming back until Jiang Cheng happened to run into him outside of that cafe, makes Jiang Cheng want to punch something. They really need to finish their conversation.

"I thought Lan Zhan was your best friend?" asks Jiang Cheng.

"He is! He's my very bests of friends," his brother replies with a wink, "besides you can have a lot of best friends."

Nie Huaisang perks up. "What's this about Lan Wangji?"

"Eh, he's not the point of the conversation right now."

"You can't have more than one best friend," adds Wen Qing.

"But I just said you can."

"No, you can't," replies Jiang Cheng, in unison with Nie Huaisang and Wen Qing.

When he catches their eyes, he doesn't like the way they look at him. Or he likes the way they look at him too much.

It doesn't help that Jiang Cheng finds them both incredibly attractive. But like Wei Wuxian said, they're having a baby together and very much unavailable.

My absolute favorite part of mdzs is when Wwx tried to provoke Lwj by slipping jnto his bed and Lwj traps him and falls asleep with Wwx on top of him. Like can you imagine. The love of your life has been dead for over a decade and then suddenly you FIND HIM and all the questions are still unanswered but you can hold him safe, warm, and alive in your arms as you fall asleep. The healing that must have brought him. How happy Lwj had to have been. He’s ALIVE and HERE and we can sleep now. Ugh I get feral thinking about it.
