Review: A Canticle for Liebowitz (1959)

Rating: 10/10

I was handed this book by a friend of mine, stating that it was a partial inspiration for the Fallout franchise, especially the Brotherhood of Steel. While I knew about A Boy and His Dog and Mad Max, I had never heard of this book, and I was leery of recommendations. However, this book was an incredible tale from start to finish. The characters feel real, the world natural and logical in its progression, clearly much larger than the novel would hint at.

The novel's themes revolve around religion and science, as well as the cyclical nature of history, and does not beat around the bush when dealing with these topics. In fact, Walter Miller meets these topics head-on, drawing on the imagery that he himself experienced as a tail gunner of a bomber that participated in the destruction of the abbey at Monte Cassino during World War II.

As per usual, spoilers beyond this line! But, for real, read this book! "It fucks," as my friend who recommended it to me says.

Strengths:

From the beginning of the novel , the you're dropped into this brave new world with little to no context. The first character you meet is Francis, a brother and novice of the Abbey of the Blessed Liebowitz somewhere in New Mexico. He's young, 17 years old, and much of the beginning of the novel and the first section, "Fiat Homo" (Let there be man), revolves around his discovery of a fallout shelter and possible relics of the Blessed Liebowitz. But, what is to note is that, while much is left unsaid and is implied by the dialog, Francis is a very compelling character. Naive and earnest about his faith, over the course of 'Fiat Homo," he quickly became my favorite character.

The novel's world also feels so much larger than the pages hold. Whereas some novels have the issue where characters overexplain their reasons or circumstances, the dialog and exposition never feels ham-fisted or forced. But, on the other side, the novel gives you just enough information to want more and to fill in those blanks yourself. This line is walked brilliantly from start to finish.

The themes of religion and science are perhaps most central to the story, as it is a monastery dedicated to the preservation of technological schematics, but the themes are well woven into the narrative. The arc light replacing a crucifix, and the theological debate between the Abbott Dom Paulo and Thon Taddeo Pfardentrott, is my favorite bit of imagery and symbolism in the whole novel.

There's too much to fit into this review, to which I implore you to read it for yourself! And you too can learn how a "tomater" woman's questionably sapient conjoined twin becomes free of original sin.

Weaknesses:

There are few criticisms I can level against this novel is the characterization of the plains nomads in "Fiat Lux." While the novel provides an interesting reason and evolution of the cattlemen and ranchers of the 1800 years prior into nomads, it still feels like it is rooted in the cultural depictions of Native Americans that were popular in the 1950s. But, especially when viewed in context of those racist depictions, Miller's plains nomads are one of the least offensive likenessess.

WOOD-ENGRAVED INITIALS FORM MILLER & RICHARD

Displayed here are some wood-engraved historiated and ornamental initials from the Edinburgh type foundry Miller & Richard. The foundry was established by William Miller in 1809. His son-in-law Walter Richard joined the firm in 1832. It remained in continuous operation until 1952 when matrices for a few types were acquired by Stephenson, Blake & Co.

The specimens shown here are from a Miller & Richard type sample book published in Edinburgh in the late 1870s.
