On June 19, 1998, the X-Files jumped from the small screen to premiere as a feature film The X-Files: Fight the Future. Creator Chris Carter, cast and crew had hoped after season 5 to continue the series as films, however Fox insisted that it continue on as a TV series. The next The X-Files film wouldn't appear until 5 years after the first run of the series cancelled (The X-Files: I Want To Believe July 25, 2008). The movie saw a new development in the pending alien invasion and gave a reason to re-open the X-Files, which had been closed in season 5. It teased fans with a kiss between Agents Mulder (David Duchovny) and Scully (Gillian Anderson). The movie also saw the demise of The Well Manicured Man (John Neville). Some of the TV series regulars who appeared in the movie were The Cigarette-Smoking Man (William B Davis), A.D. Walter Skinner (Mitch Pileggi), Langly (Dean Haglund), Byers (Bruce Harwood), Frohike (Tom Braidwood), Group Elder (Don S Williams), 2nd Elder (George Murdock), and the Black Haired Man (Michael Shamus Wiles). Some of the characters that were exclusive to the movie were Kurtzweil (Martin Landau), Bronschweig (Jeffrey DeMunn), Cassidy (Blythe Danner), Michaud (Terry O'Quinn), Strughold (Armin Mueller-Stahl), Fire Captain Cooles (Gary Grubbs), and The Barmaid (Glenne Headly). If the British Valley looked familiar it was because Milton Johns also appeared in the Empire Strikes Back and the original run of Doctor Who. ("The X-Files", Movie, Film)

Picasso Masterpiece 'Femme à la montre' Sells for $139 Million at Auction

A Picasso masterpiece entitled “Femme à la montre” fetched more than $139 million on Wednesday, becoming the second most valuable work by the artist ever sold at auction.

The 1932 oil painting took center-stage at a two-day event at Sotheby’s in New York, at the sale of late philanthropist Emily Fisher Landau’s private collection.

The piece, which measures 51¼ x 38 inches (130 x 96.5 centimeters), depicts Picasso’s lover and “golden muse” Marie-Thérèse Walter, who featured in many of his portraits.

According to the auction house, the portrait is from one of the most prolific years of the Spanish artist’s career, which was the subject of an entire exhibition organized by the Musée Picasso in Paris and London’s Tate Modern in 2018.

In a statement announcing the sale in September, Julian Dawes, Sotheby’s head of Impressionist & Modern Art for the Americas, said: “Picasso’s ‘Femme à la Montre’ is a masterpiece by every measure. Painted in 1932 — Picasso’s ‘annus mirabilis’ — it is full of joyful, passionate abandon yet at the same time it is utterly considered and resolved. Its bold primary colors sing from the five-foot-tall-canvas.”

Picasso first met Walter in Paris in 1927 when she was 17 years old and he was still married to his first wife, Olga Khokhlova, a Russian-Ukrainian ballet dancer. Walter would become the inspiration for some of his most sought-after canvases, drawings and sculptures.

As time went on, Picasso found it increasingly difficult to hide his feelings for Walter from his work — something that became clear during his first large-scale retrospective and finally ended his marriage.

The artist painted “Femme à la montre” in August 1932, soon after the retrospective at the Galerie Georges Petit in Paris ended.

According to Sotheby’s, “the sense of release from keeping secrets about his affair seem to have spilled out onto this extraordinary canvas, in which he gives full painterly rein to new-found freedoms, drenching the painting in strong primary colors and beautiful forms, while at the same time paying careful attention to every small detail, creating a composition that is both intensely complex and deeply harmonious.”

Picasso died in 1973, and Walter in 1977.

The painting is one of about 120 from the collection of Fisher Landau, a world renowned contemporary art collector who died earlier this year aged 102, according to The Art Newspaper.

The two-part sale, which concludes Thursday, also includes works by Mark Rothko, Andy Warhol, Willem de Kooning and Georgia O’Keeffe. The collection is expected to sell for over $400 million overall. Other big-ticket items auctioned on Wednesday included one of Jasper Johns’ iconic American flag paintings, which went for $41 million, and an Ed Ruscha artwork — an oil painting emblazoned with the word “Boss” — that fetched more than $39.4 million.

Fisher Landau began seriously collecting after receiving an insurance payout following an armed robbery of her jewelry at her New York home in 1969.

In an interview for an exhibition catalog, quoted in the Sotheby’s statement, she said of the episode: “Even though Lloyds of London paid up, there was no way to replace that collection. It was so beautiful. And they got it in one fell swoop…. I was devastated. But I decided that I didn’t want the jewelry any more. I now had seed money for a collection.”

Last year, Picasso’s most curious painting of Walter, in which she appears as a tentacled sea creature, sold for $67.5 million at Sotheby’s in New York.

Picasso’s portraits of Walter have become highly sought-after, with his other 1932 works “Femme assise près d’une fenêtre (Marie-Thérèse),” selling for $103.41 million in 2021, and “Nude, Green Leaves and Bust,” selling for $106.5 million in 2010.

In May 2015, Picasso’s “Les femmes d’Alger (Version “O”) sold at Christie’s in New York for $179.4 million — at that time, the highest price ever paid for a work of art at auction.

MAC. Directed by John Turturro. 1992 Turturro’s directorial debut is an intense look at the struggles of 3 working class, Italian-American brothers. They work together, love each other and fight intensely over the way their lives should be. It’s great to watch these fantastic actors move through this film and Turturro brings his usual intensity to his role. Recommended.

Rounders. Directed by John Dahl. 1998 Starring Matt Damon, Edward Norton, Gretchen Mol and Martin Landau. Gambling leads to debts — serious debts — with the wrong people. Damon and Norton give excellent performances of two hardcore gamblers trying to get themselves out of trouble with somewhat different perspectives. It’s entertaining and well done, beautifully shot by cinematographer Jean-Yves Escoffier giving New York City a sort of noir-in-color look.

Human Desire. Directed by Fritz Lang. 1954 Starring the great Gloria Graham and Glenn Ford. Loosely based on Émile Zola's 1890 novel La Bête Humaine — Lang’s noir take is a sort of alternate of Double Indemnity, but with a different twist. Graham is especially delicious to watch in this as she maneuvers the men in her life. Great cinematography by Burnett Guffey (In a lonely Place, From Here to Eternity, Bonnie & Clyde, The Sniper, etc.) Excellent.

The Sniper. Directed by Edward Dmytryk. 1952. A psychotic serial killer is on the loose and the cops try to figure him out to catch him. An early example of this now typical story, 14 years before Charles Whitman got up in a tower and started picking off random people with a rifle.

Hard Times. Directed by Walter Hill. 1975 Charles Bronson’s minimalist approach as a quiet street fighter during the depression era is an excellent take on the social, political and economic struggles of those times. James Coburn delivers a brash and fun counterpoint to all the misery. Overall an excellent debut for director Walter Hill.

The Assignment. Directed by Walter Hill. 2017 Hill goes out on a limb with yet another story of violent revenge, only this one has an unusual and extreme twist. Sigourney Weaver gives a typically excellent performance as a highly intelligent but twisted doctor performing illegal, underground body modification surgery. Not for the squeamish, entertaining, good action, but ultimately hollow…

Heretic. Directed by Scott Beck & Bryan Woods. 2024 With a strong distaste for religion in general, outstanding performances by the 3 main actors, excellent cinematography by Chung-hoon Chung (Old Boy!); this horror flick is definitely entertaining. It starts out with an atypical build-up to an expected second act that’s the meat of horror films. In the end, it feels a bit thin and too calculated to really make a lasting impact for me, but as I say, it is entertaining.

The first long-term run that Deadpool had began in 1997 and was written by Joe Kelly. This is generally considered one of the better runs on the character, and introduced or developed many of the character traits and supporting cast we associate with Deadpool today (e.g. 4th Wall breaks, Blind Al & Weasel, etc). With that said, here's the order:

Deadpool (1994 Limited Series) #1-4

Deadpool (1997 Series) #1-5

Deadpool (1997 Series) #-1

The '94 Limited Series wasn't written by Joe Kelly (it's actually written by Mark Waid and features some of my favourite Deadpool writing), but Kelly's run begins right off the back of it. It's Deadpool's second ever limited series, and unlike the first one, doesn't really tie much into any other plotlines. It's just a Deadpool book. This also sets up Deadpool's first meeting with Siryn, and a couple other moments and plot elements that come up during Kelly's run. #1-5 is the first story arc of Kelly's run, and more or less deals directly with the events of the previous series. As for #-1, this was part of a series of issues in a pseudo-event called "Flashback". While the issue, I believe came out after issue #6, narratively it fits a bit better here, since 6 is the beginning of the second arc. While there may be narratively an even better place for this issue, placing it here at least means you'll have read it any time the issue is referenced going forward.

Issues 6-8 + the 1997 annual make up one story arc, while 9-11 make up another. Issue #0 is basically entirely disconnected from everything and is only worth reading if you're a completionist. It IS at least written by Joe Kelly, which is why it's here at all. X-Force issue is essentially a cameo. It's referenced in Deadpool #10 but not required reading by any stretch of the imagination. Side note, I also struggled to figure out quite when it was released. The Marvel Unlimited app says December '96, but the wiki says Jan '98. The issue also makes reference to the events of Deadpool #6 and says that they happened a year ago, so I'm inclined to believe the wiki.

Here are some more arcs. Deadpool makes significant guest appearances in Heroes for Hire, and I believe issue 10 indicates that the story takes place sometime after DP17, but since that's the middle of a story arc that has no space to be interrupted, I looked for the next most appropriate place for it. The story ends kind of abruptly though, particularly for Deadpool's involvement.

Wolverine Annual 1999

Here's the last stretch of the run! once again broken up into story arcs (although given their lengths, it may be more appropriate to call them segments of story, especially since everything after Issue 25 feels almost like an epilogue). Wolverine Annual isn't written by Joe Kelly, or refer much to the actual plot of the run, but Deadpool makes a significant guest appearance in it, and there is explicit reference made to the events of Deadpool #27
