I keep running this through my head, and I think Crowley's choice of body positions supports it.
He's shoving Aziraphale, but not in the expected way with his hands. His entire forearms are flat against his chest. That lets them have their faces and bodies close together while still being visually coded as aggressive / attacking.
(I am not sure how much characterization weight to put on the gentleness, since clonking his head on the wall would have been bad for Michael Sheen)
Sit down, gang, we’re gonna talk about the Wall Scene.
I know, I know, other people have screamed about it before, but when your friends ask you to do a thing, you should oblige.
But you know exactly what scene I’m talking about. They’re walking down halls, kicking in the doors of an ex-Satanic convent, Crowley admits to being Soft because even though he turned the paintball guns into real guns, he also made sure that no one would die.
“They’re all having miraculous escapes,” he says. Because he knew Aziraphale would be upset otherwise.
Aziraphale replies, “You know, I’ve alway said that you really are quite a nice–”
And then. and T H E N
Tumblr media
First of all, and this is fairly important: if you look closely, Crowley don’t even push him against the wall hard. He wants to intimidate Aziraphale so he’ll stop doing things like calling him NICE, but he doesn’t want to hurt him. Never wants to hurt him.
In fact, if you notice, he only pushes far enough for Aziraphale’s back to hit the wall. He doesn’t push hard enough or lean in hard enough for Aziraphale to hit his head on the wall. Look closely.
Tumblr media
Aziraphale is the one to rest his head against the wall, that doesn’t happen because Crowley is too rough with him.
But the second thing, fam, the second thing I wanna say is this: when someone grabs you like that, usually you grab them back. You bring your hands up to defend yourself, you try to escape, you turn away, brace yourself for the attack, you do s o m e t h i n g.
Tumblr media
Aziraphale does NOTHING. He holds his hand out behind him just to feel for the wall, but other than that, he lets Crowley manhandle him. He doesn’t even look away, he’s staring right at Crowley, meeting his gaze steadily.
And look at his hands in the gif above. They don’t clench into fists. Never, not once. There is no fear response.
Now look at Aziraphale’s face. He’s surprised, but he’s not afraid.
Tumblr media
That’s not a look of fear, fam, that is a look of Gay Panic because oh no, our bodies are pressed together and our noses are touching. His eyes even flick down to where the tips of their noses brush.
He never once tries to push Crowley off of him, tries to escape, nothing. Never, not once, do we see fear on his face.
And, in fact, when Sister Mary Loqacious comes along, we see the opposite.
Excuse me, gentlemen, sorry to break up in intimate moment.
Tumblr media
Crowley turns to inspect the newcomer, Aziraphale does not. Aziraphale is too focused on Crowley.
Look at his eyes. First focused on where their noses had been touching, just like in the last gif, and then when Crowley looks away, he only lifts his gaze to stare at Crowley’s profile.
Tumblr media
LOOK AT THAT EXPRESSION.
Excuse me, sir, I’m going to have to cite you for excessive longing.
My favorite thing, though, my absolutely favorite thing, is Crowley immediately looks to Mary, whereas it takes a moment for Aziraphale to realize they’re being intruded upon.
Tumblr media
What was that? Other people exist? Dear me.
Also, like, listen. This strange woman is walking up to them and speaking to them and NEITHER OF THESE NERDS move away from each other.
Usually, when two people are caught in what might be called a “compromising” position–especially when the person catching them calls it an ‘intimate moment’–the two people involved try to put as much distance between them as possible and laugh it off.
Not these nerds, oh no. They literally stay pressed together against a wall, just looking at her as she talks to them. Crowley doesn’t even move away when he realizes who she is.
Tumblr media
Aziraphale, still content to be held against the wall, is like, “Oh, we know her?”
But look at them! They’re still just standing there! This woman is RIGHT NEXT TO THEM, is ACTIVELY STARTING A CONVERSATION WITH THEM, and they’re like “what is personal space.”
Crowley only moves away from Aziraphale when Mary starts backing up like she’s gonna run.
Tumblr media
And then what happens? They bicker like an old married couple. Because of course they do.
Why would they do anything else????

Never gonna get over how the anime made this scene just so,, haunting and elevated. Like I love the manga but I love how the anime has taken these scenes and elevated the themes of death and rebirth with simple shots like this and it’s why even after reading all of the manga I still get excited for the anime because I *know* the anime will not only be a faithful adaptation, but also an artistic masterpiece as it uses the medium to its advantage

yeah your rituals may be intricate. But have u ever placed a real gun in the hands of your eternal and fated enemy, watched his hands shake as he points it at you, and trusted that he will not let the bullet touch you, all for a magic trick that was your idea in the first place? have u ever seen true fear in his eyes and still known that even without miracles, he will let no harm come to you, even if that harm is only a ridiculous amount of heavenly paperwork?

hey if you guys go back to the scene where the Cat King puts the truth compulsion on Edwin and, after removing it, asks him "now, doesn't the truth feel better?" if you watch carefully you can see Edwin give a tiny shocked and vulnerable little nod right before the Cat King nods back and you TOO can start screaming and crying inconsolably like I am

I feel like in the chaos of things they kinda glossed over possibly the most viscerally horrifying scene and concept in the show, ie; “…where did all the blood go?” “that was the last me,” and charles slowly lifting his lantern up to see the doll spider literally tearing edwin– not just a replica of edwin but literally the body of edwin from just a minute or two earlier– apart limb from limb, torn in half at the waist. then as he moves the lantern a bit to the side he’s met with an entire bloody pile of dismembered, decapitated, eviscerated edwin parts, from god knows how many killings.
like. charles must have persistent fucking nightmares about that right? in the moment he was focused on getting out of there and had to stomach it to move on, but afterwards? i think that must legitimately be the most gruesome, graphic thing he’s ever seen in his entire life/afterlife. i can’t think of anything that could be worse than that. it’s bad enough on it’s own, the live, constant mutilation happening to anyone, but then on top of it all it’s not just anyone– it’s his best friend, the most important person in the world to him.
ghosts can’t exactly sleep, but he must at least get flashbacks, or be triggered on occasion to an extent that makes him feel sick. i dont even know what that'd do to a person honestly, but it'd be hard (if not impossible) even for a pro-internalizer like charles to suppress that memory completely and not be tortured by it for an indefinite amount of time.

The constant play of light and shadow:
Pinned on a cross- pinned with a kiss.
It speaks volumes that the light in the bookshop is due to Aziraphale being magical. So it is always sunny and the mood there depends on the situation.
Nothing natural about the light, it is always intentional.

I love how the scenes were filmed and edited because you can see how different they were.
Just let me explain (since I'm lazy I'll use CrP = Crowley's pinning and AaP= Archangel's pinning)
CrP -> sudden (due Aziraphale's words) Vs AaP -> premeditated
CrP -> fast approaching (with a great zoom in to makes it seems faster) Vs AaP -> slow and menacing
CrP -> the angel roll with it (kudos to the stunt team who probably showed David and Michael how to do it and kudos to the actors for doing it so flawlessly) Vs AaP -> Aziraphale does nothing to counter that and freeze in fear.
CrP -> Overdramatic snake Vs AaP -> threatening ba..d angels
CrP -> Aziraphale is calm (he is just letting his snake rant) because he knows Crowley won't harm him Vs AaP -> he tries to stay stoic but he's terrified and nervous (his smile is born from fear)
CrP -> Crowley is very close to Aziraphale Vs AaP -> the archangels keep their distance (even Uriel who is pinning the angel)
Kudos to all the actors, thr filming crew and editing team because those scenes work beautifully to show us how the situation is.
I don't think I'll ever be over the fact that Aziraphale didn't look even one tiny bit scared when Crowley pinned him to a wall but looked absolutely terrified when an angel (his own side) pinned him to a wall. My boy knows who's his real friend. He's on their own side. Always.
