From the moment of her untimely death and the decision to publish her Memoirs the process of misrepresenting Margaret Fuller began. Whereas during her lifetime Margaret Fuller was known as both an intellectual woman and a woman of personal magnetism and charm, after her death in what appears to be a fairly consistent pattern for the construction of images of women who have been visible and who have been accorded some status, her personality, and not her intellectual accomplishment, became the focus of attention on her. But emphasising personal qualities at the expense of intellectual ones is not the only bias apparent in the representation of Margaret Fuller, or for that matter, any other woman of comparable note. A particular personal profile, which may bear little resemblance to the reality of the woman's life but which proves to be productive in patriarchal terms, frequently emerges.
In the case of Margaret Fuller, it was the Memoirs of Margaret Fuller Ossoli published in 1852 and edited by such reputable men of intellectual stature as Ralph Waldo Emerson, William Henry Channing and James Freeman Clarke, which began the printed distortion of her personality. As Urbanski says, ‘This work became the literary canon that established Margaret Fuller as an "arrogant old maid", aggressive and ugly, the archetypal feminist whose need for attention was channeled into the feminist movement. In fact’, she adds, ‘this depiction of Fuller established the feminist archetype that remains today’ (1980, p. 4).
Margaret Fuller's life has been the subject of many books and biographies, and the Memoirs, edited so soon after her death by men of distinction who knew her, has usually been accepted as an authoritative source. The emphasis and values inherent in it have been built upon, elaborated and amplified by subsequent scholars without necessarily being questioned. But the pattern which the editors set for the interpretation of Margaret Fuller was one in which her conversational ability was prominent, and one in which her writing - where included - concentrated on her literary rather than her social criticism; little attention is paid to her feminism or to Woman in the Nineteenth Century. Unfortunately, says Urbanski, the editors did not merely publish Margaret Fuller's letters and journals; they used their position as gatekeepers not just to select, but to change, her writing. They constructed an image of Fuller that does not have its origins in her work or her life. A comparison between the accounts in the Memoirs and the original documents reveals not only that much of the material was ‘destroyed and defaced’ by the editors, but that they ‘also rewrote Fuller's work, changing her writing style’ (ibid., p. 5, my emphasis).
And if this isn't enough, let it be noted that they then criticised that writing style!

There is one mind common to all individual men. Every man is an inlet to the same and to all of the same. He that is once admitted to the right of reason is made a freeman of the whole estate. What Plato has thought, he may think; what a saint has felt, he may feel; what at any time has be-fallen any man, he can understand. Who hath access to this universal mind is a party to all that is or can be done, for this is the only and sovereign agent.
Of the works of this mind history is the record. Its genius is illustrated by the entire series of days. Man is explicable by nothing less than all his history. Without hurry, without rest, the human spirit goes forth from the beginning to embody every faculty, every thought, every emotion, which belongs to it in appropriate events. But the thought is always prior to the fact; all the facts of history preexist in the mind as laws. Each law in turn is made by circumstances predominant, and the limits of nature give power to but one at a time. A man is the whole encyclopaedia of facts. The creation of a thousand forests is in one acorn, and Egypt, Greece, Rome, Gaul, Britain, America, lie folded already in the first man. Epoch after epoch, camp, kingdom, empire, republic, democracy, are merely the application of his manifold spirit to the manifold world.
-- Ralph Waldo Emerson, History

148 Of The Funniest Dog Posts
We’re only 5 months into 2020, and it’s already enough. But when it feels that there’s too much to process and your brain, aka hard disk, is about to go into overdrive, we got something to cheer u up. Because if there’s anything that can save the world, it must be dogs.
Bored Panda has compiled a much-needed list of our favorite little creatures, from hilarious bamboozlers to shamelessly funny doggos. The truth is, dog logic in action is so absurd it’s priceless. So scroll down, upvote your faves, and share with friends who need a boost of fun. You may wanna save the link for later too, 'cause rumor has it that dog pics are a bandage for the soul.
We also spoke to Kimberly Freeman, the founder of City Dog Expert and a professional dog trainer, about things we can learn from our four-legged friends to get through these hard times. Scroll down for the full interview below.

Kimberly Freeman said that the coronavirus pandemic has been rough for many of us, but we can learn from our dogs how to live in the moment and to be excited about the small things.
The professional dog trainer suggested “To look out of the window and admire the beauty around us (or the neighbor's cat). To be excited when the postman delivers something new (especially a new purchase). To relax and be content with our own company and the company of those around us.”
Most importantly, we can see how dogs let go and do not hold anger or resentment. Our four-legged friends teach us “to forgive when you truly are sorry (just like that time you accidentally stood on your pup’s tail).”

Kimberly believes that “as a pet owner in charge of another living being, we also learn to let go and go with the flow a lot more.” The pro dog trainer doesn’t say it’s always easy, though. “Shit happens (literally) and no matter how well-behaved our dogs are, we cannot control every element of their actions.”
But remember that “sometimes the most surprising things our dogs do bring us the most unexpected joy.” Kimberly gave an example of “non-dog owners having no idea how hysterical a dog snore or a snaggle tooth can be.”

At the end of the day, having a furry companion next to you could bring some peacefulness to your life. “It’s scientifically proven that dogs relax us and bring down blood pressure and elevated stress rates of those they are around,” Kimberly told us.

Quote
On Thoreau’s 200th birthday this July he might want us to remember the men and women, largely unacknowledged by history, who were confined to this paradisiacal corner of the earth. It was, indeed, a sanctuary, but for many of Thoreau’s companions freedom was narrowly circumscribed. Their world was, according to the historian Elise Lemire, the “Black Walden,” a place of not-so-quiet desperation. For consumers of conventional history, it is easy enough to fall into the impression that Thoreau was the only person at Walden, that the pond was a pristine tract of wilderness. It wasn’t. Walden was just beyond the bounds of civilized convention — which meant that it was a place for outcasts. Thoreau knew this, and willingly lived among them, those who had been barred from the inner life of many wealthy suburbs of Boston. So who exactly were Thoreau’s neighbors? As Lemire and Walls discovered in researching Thoreau, these individuals embodied the fraught history of race in the Americas. Brister Freeman’s sister, Zilpah White, was also a freed slave. After the Declaration of Independence was defended, she lived on the edge of Thoreau’s famous bean field, the place where he toiled for two years in the hopes of realizing Ralph Waldo Emerson’s “Self-Reliance,” the rare and difficult act of supporting oneself. Lemire explains that Zilpah White did it without fanfare. She wove linen and made brooms for a living. Arsonists burned her house down in 1813. She managed to escape the fire, but her dog, cat and chickens died. She rebuilt her home. But her life — and life for women like her — didn’t have much in common with Rousseau’s Romantic ideal of the state of nature.
Thoreau’s ‘Invisible’ Neighbors at Walden by John Kaag and Clancy Martin for The Stone July 10, 2017
If he’d want us to remember them then maybe he should have written about them in his book called, “Walden Pond.” Oh. No. It was more important to preserve the image of him out in the “wilderness” being a rebel.
#when I was in highschool and read Walden I was like OMG THIS IS SO PURE#then I got older and realized some shit was dodgy there#and then I moved here and went to Walden Pond and the last shreds of my respect for Thoreau died#his mother did his laundry and lived a mile away and baked him pies#I have walked from Concord Center to Walden#it's a nice 15 minute walk#but Thoreau was an edgelord who went to live DELIBERATELY and wrote about it like he was in the wilderness all alone when he totally was not#I mean I guess he tried to live an examined life and that's not a bad thing#but he's mentally pigeonholed with Hamlet and bananas in my head#if you don't know me let me tell you that I refer to bananas as yellow fingers of satan#racism#American history
