Do you think that people who invent things with very destructive consequences are blinded to the downsides of it more by money or more by scientific curiosity?
I think the downsides are not always immediately obvious. Coal-fired electricity looks a lot more attractive in 1882 when there's literally only one such power plant and the global population is like 18% its present value. TNT was invented as a yellow dye, and it's so stable its usefulness as an explosive wasn't discovered until thirty years later.
We have this collective mental image, promoted by simplifications of historical narratives, that the inventor is a lone genius who through his labor produces an artifact and all its consequences in a single moment in time, and without which the thing would never be invented. Pretty much every point in that narrative is wrong. New technologies are the culmination of many different discoveries; there are enough very smart people working at the cutting edge of these fields that if one of them did not discover the principles behind these inventions, another almost certainly would sooner or later; and the exact applications of new technologies, nevermind how they will change society when those applications are utilized, often take years or decades to discover.
Now, I think there is an extent to which, as a working scientists, you can reasonably be held to account for the work you do. If you work at the Acme National Horrible Death By Chemical Weapons Laboratory, and invent a new, horrible chemical weapon, you do not get to go "oh no!" in shock when somebody dies to your horrible chemical weapon. And sometimes scientists do have a pretty good idea of how their technology will be used--the Haber Process was originally invented to manufacture fertilizers, but its application to the manufacturing of explosives was pretty clear to Fritz Haber, and he joined the German effort to develop deadlier chemical weapons pretty enthusiastically.
Men like Haber seem historically to be motivated not by intrinsic greed, but by the things which motivate us all: the desire to provide for their loved ones, the approval of their peers and the respect of their colleagues, and their status in society. The problem with respect to scientists who know damn well what they're doing isn't that everybody working at the Acme National Horrible Death By Chemical Weapons Laboratory is greedy and the job pays too much; the problem is that society, by and large, respects you and looks up to you and fetes you at public events and talks about what a patriot and a community leader you are if you do really well at inventing new, horrible chemical weapons.
#i knew a guy in university who said he would have no problem working for weapons r&d#because it's not the designers of the weapons who decide how they're used#and there was a valid point there:#shaking your finger at fritz haber only absolves the german general staff of the decision to use the weapon#or the kaiser of the decision to wage war#of all the people involved in the chain of events leading to chlorine gas in the trenches of the western front#fritz haber was probably the most generic#in the sense that if you went back in time and killed him in 1915 probably nothing significant would change#i think it's a little too pat to say the person designing the horrible chemical weapon has *no* responsibility#i certainly would find the idea of trying to figure out new ways to kill people extremely morally unpleasant#but without the military and political will to use those weapons#they just sit on shelves until they stop working

All I see is Y/N being at their mercy once they recognize the poor janitor. What if they just assume they're being a good listerner by not talking. Like if one of em is having a bad day they just snatch Y/n mid task for cuddles and to vent.
Ah this is about the rlgl au right?
Well that would be a super dangerous game to play because the staff is strictly forbidden contact to the bots or the clients, so if they ever got caught doing that y/n would definetly be fired, even if they werent at fault. Fazbear policy
This also means that if y/n wants to keep their job they cant openly help sun or moon if anything happens at work, and they cant be spotted with sun or moon while off the clock or that little oversight of management (overlapping adresses of staff and bots) could be discovered
lets see how long y/n will be able to keep the distance to the celestial twins befor those idiots worm their way into y/n s heart
#i ramble#rlgl au#fazbears policy is super strict#understandable with all the politicians and stars as their customers#staff is not even allowed to look at customers#head down stay out of sight#but the hourly wage is so good that every member of staff scrambles to play by the rules

I always forget that monarchists exist and then I see someone with the username duchessofmyheartforever or williamisababe posting about how it's mean to giggle at an ultrarich economic leech experiencing just a fraction of struggle and inconvenience (because lets be honest, he probably wont kick the bucket—his doctors are paid to keep his corpse animated long after it ceases to be humane)
#iv.txt#uk politics#ntm crying to tumblr staff about it like bestie they do not fucking care#blah blah 'its not funny to joke about cancer what if it was your family member'#like literally everyone is affected by cancer either their own or a loved ones#i dont have to imagine ive already lost two family members#i promise you. we are not joking about cancer. we are joking about the parasite in chief using our tax money#to pay for private top class healthcare while his subjects#the taxpayers that fund his lifestyle#die of the same thing due to nhs strikes because instead of paying doctors humane wages their money goes to maintaining an archaic#and outdated#system that only serves to uphold a status quo long outgrown#but sure. complain to tumblr staff#its not a laughter of glee its a cold and mirthless 'ha'#see how at the end of the day even you are mortal. how does it feel to fear for your life? how does it feel to know hundreds of thousands#of your citizens live fearing for their lives every day because of the economic crisis you and your government have created

Got an email today from the union and basically they're taking one of the administrators to task for violating contract and state law regarding wages for support staff (me) or something like that, and today when I went to clean his office, the only thing in his trash can is a pamphlet for a $600 seminar in the next state over about labor contract arbitration which is just fancy talk for "how can I tell the union to shut up and let me do what I want"
#smokey talks#i do not make enough money to do this job girl omggggg#the union has been trying to negotiate better wages for support staff for a while#but every time i visit the admin offices to clean they have fancier new equipment#and everyones got doordash food and or like. ordered catering to the office#and everyones got fancy cars and stuff#this is the woooooooorstttttt#they make 6 figures and i make poverty wages but at least theyre paying for insurance#somewhat#i hate it here

If you're a UK citizen, please sign. (You cannot sign unless you are a UK citizen). We shouldn't be punished for falling in love with someone from another country. And certainly shouldn't have to earn above the average UK wage.
[ID: Text that reads: Don’t increase the income requirement for family visas to £38,700. Currently the financial requirements to bring your spouse to the UK is £18,600 per year and now the Government wants to more than double it. Most people in the UK don’t make that per year. We believe this policy punishes those who fall in love with someone with a different nationality. 59,809 signatures out of 100,000.]

#not my usual sort of post but as someone whos partner lives in another country...#i dont like the idea of us losing our future if i can't earn above the uk average wage#and even if this didnt apply to me it isnt fair on anyone else#theyre bullshitting that this is somehow gonna help the nhs? i guess cos they think they'll be less patients?#jokes on them when they find out a lot of nhs doctors and nurses and workers moved here from-#-other countries so if this goes through they'll be less patients but also less staff so nothing would change anyway#the government just want any excuse to stop letting people into the uk because they're always scapegoating and demonising immigrants#the vampire vents

it is getting so ridiculously hard to access doctor’s appointments. the booking line for my doc’s office opens at 8:30am so i call at exactly 8:30 only for my call to be rejected because they are already taking a call. they don’t even put me into a queue, the phone just forcibly cancels the call. the system at my local doctors is for patients to call over and over at the designated time slot until a staff member becomes available to pick up the phone. they don’t have a better system than that. for me this took about 25 redials over 15 minutes (not all my call attempts even fit in my screenshot). THEN i am finally placed on hold in a queue. they can’t tell you how many people are in the queue, they can only tell you it’s ‘more than 5’. i wait in the queue for 10 minutes, and when i finally get to talk to a person she says that all appointments are booked, and i cannot book an appointment for a future date. the only way to get an appointment is to call back the next time the line opens up again. so i will be doing this again soon
#I have been INSTRUCTED to call this many times#please tell me im not the only one who thinks this is inaccessible and a terrible stress on people who are already ill?#maybe if the nhs could pay its staff a living wage we wouldn’t be in this situation#half the issue is staffing#there’s no shortage of healthcare workers who WANT to help or who WANT jobs#txt#negative#healthcare#health#medical.

yes this is a natural series of events when you've worked at the same place for over a year and it also happens to have RIDICULOUSLY quick turnover where very few people wind up staying on consistently, but ive become one of the Experienced Waitresses That Knows What They're Doing at my job and we very suddenly have a lot of New Teenagers That Have Never Done This Before and it's just. insane to me. bc when i started my job i was SO intimidated like it truly is a big very fast-paced place where everyone has to pull their weight (ie you need to be able to do the coffee station and work the floor and run food and help on bar) and the customers are particularly wankerish so the more Experienced Staff that had been there for a while were like mini gods to me. like truly i thought they were so cool and smart and unbothered and now that's me. i have a gaggle of 17 year olds constantly asking me how to do things and I KNOW THE ANSWER. on a government wage no less
#like it's a BIT annoying bc this is just not the kind of place that should be hiring teenage first-time workers#but the catering industry is doing BAD atm and my manager got told off by head office for spending too much on wages#so he's hiring a load of young people bc guess what! young people have lower minimum wages! some of them are literally on fiver an hour#i genuinely think when i turn 21 my hours are gonna PLUMMET but that's a future me problem#but yeah it means there's like. ten of us that have been working there consistently for months to years at a time#and the rest of the staff are just completely new. like everyone i was working with yesterday were college kids#that had been there a handful of weeks. and im someone who still regularly needs to ask management questions#bc for starters that never goes away like truly u do just need help but also bc I NEVER GOT OFFICIALLY TRAINED#EVERYTHING I KNOW I LEARNED ON THE JOB. DO YOU KNOW HOW STUPID THAT IS#so i have these teenagers looking up at me like 'how do i do x thing' and im like idk either babe. let's quit together#hella slaves to capitalism

Feederism restaurant where all the servers are feedees and whenever you order a meal you can choose whether you or they get to eat it. I'm just imagining parties of feeders showing up and ganging up on the poor feedee working the area their table is in by stuffing them until they can't even waddle back to the break room. Despite there being a lot of space between tables it's never quite enough and guests always have to be mindful for getting bumped by a belly or hip~
#esmes lood writings#staff get raises based on their clothing sizes~#And all the tips are desserts (because we would pay an actual wage and not make the servers rely on tips because we're not assholes)

The reason you can't raise the price of vidja games over $60 without ppl freaking out, even though the cost of production has risen massively over the last 20 years, is because wages haven't increased AT ALL in the last 40.

hmmmmm wife's work is pulling some extremely shady (and illegal!) shit so they maybe hopefully get some legal penalties
#(it's a vet clinic)#they already got got for treating wildlife without the proper license(s) last month#1) bosses were warned by a receptionist that her chair might be broken then... it broke. and she hurt herself. she gets l&i.#they then cut her hours enough to drop from full-time.#so there's some retaliation.#2) during a staff meeting the bosses said they would withhold pay from one of the doctors (for a stupid reason but to do it at all...)#so there's some (threatened) wage theft as well#3) tried to retroactively get someone actively on parental leave to sign paperwork saying she'd be back at work 2 weeks earlier#than her government-provided parental leave afforded her#like they chastised her A FULL WEEK into the leave bc they didn't give her the paperwork saying she ''should have signed it before leaving'#which as far as i know is just a really shitty + shady move but afaik not illegal per se#4) the x-ray room is just an open room with no door or barrier between where employees walk and like it's BEEN like that#so wife reported them to osha ❤️#(there are many not-illegal reasons why the bosses are terrible but these are the legally/potentially legally actionable ones)

In Australia you get paid extra for working on a sunday. Minimum wage for someone my age on casual hours when working a sunday is something like $43 an hour. My bosses had some legal bullshit that allowed them to pay me a bit less at like $37 an hour for sundays. So the whole time I've been here I've been getting underpaid. The courts have informed them that they're no longer allowed to do that and now they have to pay me the actual minimum wage on sundays.
I've been informed that I will no longer be working weekends, unless I agree to become full time or part time, which would mean getting paid even less than I already was. Which they claim would be better because I would get holidays and sick days... they also give you the lowest amount of those they can legally get away with.
Man, I fucking hate small business owners
#scumbags. these millionaires cant pay me below minimum wage anymore so they just won't pay me at all#oh well now i get weekends off and they get to deal with the whole store falling apart on weekends because they have no staff for it#oh and the other day an elderly employee broke her knee while working and they made her finish her shift. standing too#so theyre about to get investigated by fairwork for that bullshit because she deserves a lot of compensation and might be able to sue
