A pair of swords for Waerloga. A pair of PCs were sealed into blades by a powerful outsider, so each sword represents a PC. The white and burgundy one is Vera Dawnwright, a woman running from past mistakes and trying to forge a new life as she protects her friends and loved ones from evil. The black and red one is Thaddeus Killian, filthy-mouthed yet big-hearted man of medicine. Both justicars in service of Carolynth, god of knowledge, protection, secrets, and the barriers between the planes.
They got better, of course, but Vera carried around and used the blade that once held her for the rest of the campaign. <3

Nosferatu & Castlevania: Orlok â Olrox
Guys, I had no idea that "Olrox" is just the Romanization of Orurokku (ăŞăŤăăăŻ), the Japanese version of Orlok--as in Count Orlok from Nosferatu--until I actually bothered to read Olrox's wiki (x x)! đ¤Ś
Orlok's name derives from the Eastern European words for "war" (oorlog) & shapeshifers (ordog, varcolac/werewolf, etc). Orlok is also a false cognate with warlock/waerloga (from "liar" in Old English).
The rabbithole has officially gone too far. I'd been knew Castlevania Nocturne's character Olrox comes from the iconic Castlevania videogame Symphony of the Night, where he's also named Olrox. Nocturne just changed him from a European vamp to an Aztec one; keeping his color palette, powers, & reptiles/snakes/dragon motif.

I never thought any deeper than that, or even WHY videogame!Olrox's design looked the way he did--people are giving Robert Eggers TOO MUCH credit for the mustachioed Orlok--Castlevania did it first! đ¤Ż

What's wild is that Netflix!Olrox's design originally was supposed to more closely resemble Orlok from Nosferatu 1922--I'm suddenly having war flashbacks to Solas from Dragon Age, LOL.
Thank GOD Netflix changed Olrox's backstory & overall design to the cooler Aztec Mexican vampire (tlahuelpuchi) + Quetzalcoatl instead.

Which now makes total sense why Orlok/Olrox's been a dragon this whole time; from Symphony to Nocturne; as I already explained the connection between Orlok and dragons here:
So not only are Olrox & Orlok technically the same, but they also follow the exact same blueprint: the dragon/serpent tempting Eve into the Original Sin of sex; either killing their human love interest, or turning them into vampires.

I've been on a kick reading shaw x root fanfic for a few months now and I cannot even adequately articulate to you how much I fucking love your fics. Finding your page and seeing all your AUs is the treasure trove that every fic reader dreams of. You're a phenomenal writer - so insanely creative and eloquent, ridiculously good at dialogue and characterization, it's just been an absolute fucking treat to read your fics. The twists & turns of imaginative storylines, the world building, the humor, the absolutely on-fucking-point representations of all of our faves, the plot of it all!! I get sucked into everything you write instantaneously, hooked from the first paragraph , no exceptions - I read the entirety of Waerloga in one sitting, same with Shaw The Ninth, it's just impossible to start and walk away. I know it's been a while since you've written fics for POI (well, it's been a while since the show in general, I suppose, I'm just finally watching it for the first time after admiring and reading shaw x root fanfic for years), but I just wanted to express how grateful I am for your work and how much enjoyment it's brought me. It's really high quality writing and I appreciate the time and the talent it took to bring us these phenomenal pieces. Thank you!! Cheers.
đ thank you so much! writing for the shoot fandom was one of the best experiences I've ever had and super fun and also great for writing practice in general since I hit nearly all the big speculative fiction genres in AUs by the end. it's truly wonderful to know that people still read and enjoy them all

i love magic worldbuilding. hooray for magic
Ooh buddy anon are you in the right place lmao
So I don't talk about it much here on the writing blog because it's not usually relevant, but aside from my day job of butcher I have a second job: I'm one of the game runners of a fantasy larp in New Jersey called Waerloga. (That's burying the lede a bit, my husband and his brother are the owners, lol) As part of that I helped develop some of the rulebook including the spells, and I'm the main writer of magic-based and fae-based plots. So magic worldbuilding is so deeply my shit I do it there too lol.
This also has the side effect of people getting involved in my plots more directly joking about Luna Infodumps, because I can get...detailed when my NPCs explain how magic or fae bullshit works lol. But sometimes my mods involve snacktime so they're cool with it. XD

Dungeons and Dragons is a popular twentieth century, early twenty-first century fantasy tabletop roleplaying game. Players play characters of a certain "classes" (which are essentially jobsets). There are a great deal of classes in D&D which focus on magical abilities in distinct manners. Wizards, Sorcerers, and Warlocks are all magic using classes, but they all play in different ways and have different explanations for their magic use, based off of different fantasy tropes.
Wizards in D&D are people who study magic, who put their time and education into mastering the arcane through scholastic achievement and direct experimentation.
Sorcerers in D&D are people with a magical bloodline, who have an inborn talent for the arcane. There is often an element of random chance involved, and lack of full control over their power.
Warlocks in D&D are people who have made a pinding pact with some magical being (like a demon, a devil, or an archfae), and in exchange for some contractual requirements, they are empowered with magic.
Because of the cultural dominance of D&D, these particular tropes and definitions have been codified in the popular mindset, even though there is no explicit definitional link between these particular words and these particular usages except in the game.
Wizard is an English word coming from "Wise" and the suffix "ard" (seen in Drunkard and Coward). It means a magic individual.
Sorcerer is an English word coming for the Latin "Sors" meaning "lot" (in the gambling sense, such as drawing lots) or "something determined by chance." It is a synonym for Wizard.
Warlock is an English word coming from the old English Waerloga, meaning traitor, scoundrel, or someone who works for the Devil. Waerloga, in turn, comes from "covenant" and "breaker" as in, a person who cheats on contracts. It has come to be a synonym for Wizard.
D&D differentiation is based on these etymological roots and has helped to codify the words in the language.
People who treat D&D's classes as like being in any way representative of fiction outside of D&D are my nemesis, I just saw a post that was like "remember the difference between a Sorcerer a Warlock and a Wizard is this" and treating like those words as if their very D&D specific meanings were like universally accepted I'm going to start taking hostages
#period novel details#D&D didn't come up with these arbitrarily#the connotations and etymologies existed before#so we have a weird prescriptivist/descriptivist thing going here when you say that DnD meaning should not expand to the definitions#which is true#but if people ARE using the words that way maybe it is a useful semantic term?#the problem (which I presume the above person is referring to) is when people impose those semantics on other fictional settings#it is funny (and appropriate) that Warlock comes from âcontract BREAKERâ via âthe Devil's servantâ#I love Terry Pratchet's etymology for Wizard as âWise Assâ

Commissioner wanted a gnarled, viney-looking staff with carvings representing all of the gods of Waerloga, plus all four of Waer's (the god of mortals) symbols. All of them are carved duct tape.
Waer: Pentacle, Cup, Sword, Wand (god of mortals and fate) Lochi: Wheat (god of agriculture) Iowei: Sun (god of sun, war, nobility) Nodden: Mountain with a path winding to it (god of travel, adventure, challenge) Tirnan: Flaming anvil (god of crafting, magic, metallurgy) Carolynth: Book with key (god of knowledge, protection, secrets, planar barriers) Nelphi: Nightshade flower (god of secrets, darkness, moon) Sturm and Drang: Electric eel (twin god of nature, storm, predation) Manos: Manacled fist with broken chain (god of chaos, rebellion, breaking fate, freedom) And just a lil feather at the bottom. <3
Tbh I'm most proud of that eel. Nature and storm together as one. Plus it looks sick as fuck.

On Etymology
So I was thinking about D&D the other day, and something occurred to me: considering where the word comes from, the implementation of Warlocks in 5e is kinda hilarious? Like âOkay, so Iâve made this class thatâs based around making a pact with a powerful entity, and you get various boons from drawing on this pact.â âCool! Whatâs it called?â âOathbreaker.â
Now if I were such an eldritch patron, Iâd be pretty damn nervous about all this!

after vergil was called out to investigate spikes of demonic energy at the waerloga household only to discover a kid and his father way in over their heads, he agreed to give guidance on how to control guido's powers better in exchange for access to the archives at calvin's work place. from there the two fathers bonded over a mutal love of literature and became something akin to friends

i like the small, yet meaningful roles that zoe, carter, and dani had. all in all, it was quite a journey. by the way, did you use some ideas from Machina into Waerloga and Daemon? they seem like cousins. when i was wondering what the spirit realm for Machina looks like, the imagery from Waerloga and Daemon popped into my head. (you had some wicked cool images in those fics) anyways, i'm off to read the subnautica one. thank you, you're awesome! (2/2)
I think tumblr must have swallowed 1/2 because I only got this one! Feel free to send it again.
I didn't use any ideas from machina in wĂŚrloga in particular, but they're my two fantasy world AUs so there was some trope overlap which can happen when you overlay the poi world and themes onto a fantasy setting. for example, writing the machine as an all-knowing but intangible being in a fantasy setting makes spirit/god seem like the easy way to go (though there's a very fun shoot fantasy au someone did where she's a dragon!). and having her powers being somewhat protective makes sense for who the machine is as a character.
I never had a really clear idea of what machina's spirit world would look like, I guess I saw it as being not particularly physical, or not solid anyway. vaguely purplish-blue? idk! her world in wĂŚrloga was partially visually inspired by an area in the game dark souls called ash lake which is one of the coolest and most surreal areas of the game. that and princess mononoke vibes. but I never really describe the spirit world in machina so it's completely up to your interpretation. I hadn't imagined them being similar but I like the idea!
#the environment design in the soulsborne games is just so phenomenal#and the environmental storytelling!#mp#asks#thank you for the ask and feel free to resend the first bit!

Warlock (Vigilante Archetype)

âHold on a tick, Kyle. The warlock class doesnât exist in Pathfinder!â
Youâre right, it doesnât.
For those who are unaware, the reason why warlocks are a thing in D&D and not in Pathfinder is because of the Open Games License for D&D 3.5, from which Pathfinder is based. This allows other companies to make content for or derived from 3.5 edition as long as they only reference material from the three core books of the setting, or from rare exceptions such as the psionics book or Epic Level Handbook. As such, because the warlock was first introduced as a class in books that came later (Complete Arcane, I think), it continued to make the jump forward into 4th and 5th edition, but could not do so into Pathfinder.
However, the thing about âwarlocksâ is that they are a common noun, not a specific label like âmind flayerâ or âbeholderâ and other product identity subjects that other media has to make intellectually distinct in order to reference, homage, or parody.
In Old English, âwarlockâ, derived from âwaerlogaâ means âbetrayerâ or âdeceiverâ, and came to be used for the male equivalent of âwitchâ, the reasoning being that a man practicing magic had turned their back on their oaths to god, and whatnot. Of course, witch is a gender-neutral term to begin with, so the distinction is likely moot.
There is, however, some value in this etymology for todayâs version of the warlock. An archetype of the vigilante class, these mystics study their magic in secret, using it publicly only under an assumed identity. This could be because the society they live in persecutes arcane practitioners (or perhaps the traditions practiced by certain groups within that society) or some other reason that they cannot allow themselves to be associated with such arts.
Whether they are traditional vigilantes, villains, or just mages in secret, their power is undeniable. While not as potent as a full caster, they can combine their power with the subtle arts to strike from secret and aid clandestine activities.
Really, the only things connecting this archetype to the warlock of other game systems lies in their reliable magical projectiles and the dubious nature of their craft.
While not as proficient in armor as other vigilantes, they are more skilled, putting their scholarly ways to work.
Studious as they are, these mystics cast spells much in the same way as a wizard or magus, preparing them from a spellbook and casting them. They study much the same spells as a wizard, though due to their mixed discipline they lack the capacity for the highest-level spells, only getting into the middle range.
Perhaps their most iconic ability is their mastery of arcane secrets to fire arcane bolts of energy with minimal expenditure of energy, allowing them to fire such bolts repeatedly all day. These bolts can be fired as projectiles or conducted in melee combat. At first, they are treated as ordinary attacks, but eventually become magically conductive enough to strike through armor. They also start out as one of the four major energy types, but as they master the art, they learn to deal other types of damage.
These vigilantes also have access to special talents that they may choose to take, such as charging their weapons with various enchantments, including their mystic bolts, shrouding themselves in elemental protection for both defense and attack, gaining a familiar, creating a temporary simulacrum to fill in for them in social situations, allowing them to go do vigilante work while maintaining a public presence, and even store items in a tattoo for concealed storage or even casting.
Given their ability to cast spells from one of the most diverse spell lists in the game, this vigilante archetype can lend itself to a lot of different builds. I personally recommend an even mix, with perhaps a focus on spells that improve your stealth, as well as utility spells for all sorts of situations, with some protection and offense for those important moments. Hit and run tactics are a must for you, so keep that in mind.
In addition to whatever their other motivations are, these mystics are very likely very interested in acquiring more magical items and lore in order to improve their abilities. However, that can potentially lead down a dark path if they begin crossing the lines in their magical research, a very real risk if all their magic is already considered evil.
Though a beaming, bright and sunny sunsoul ifrit by day, Caulane cannot abide the cruelties of the new regime around her. Therefore, at night, she dons blue robes and a mask, becoming Coldflame, a vigilante spellcaster who fires bolts of freezing cold and chilling spells alike, though she also sports blasts of other elements for emergencies.
It isnât so much that Nerra canât publicly use her magic because it is forbidden, but because if she did, others would question its source. She rightfully surmises that her tutor, a stranded contemplative, would cause quite a stir if discovered, so she dons the disguise of The Mentalist, performing spells of telekinesis and enchantment to help others.
The bloody streets of Mengar are notorious for the number of vigilantes that crop up, each having their own idea of justice and how the city can be improved. Naturally, this leads to clashes between masked figures, including this weekâs rivalry, between the stealthy Night Thrush and his magical rival, the Mad Gadabout.

Fili, the Bard's Sword, wielded by Knight-Seneschal Ser Alciner Pancervine, Indigo Knight, my major NPC at Waerloga. She trained Mystic Knights. The sword granted her fluency in any language, and could be used as her eyes and ears if someone else wielded it. She was also bound to it for like a century or so, stuck inside thanks to a ritual. She was very bored.
Crossguard based loosely on the Great Fairy Sword from Legend of Zelda: Majora's Mask, but in Alcinder's signature indigo and some azure to make it pop.
