How do you feel about other Makuta having adopted matoran? Have you met any of them? Do you think you'd be down with the improvements Makuta could make to your body?
. . . Wanna have a sleepover party with the slinkies?

Ok so in Bionicle most of the Shadow Matoran we see were originally Av-Matoran, and therefore they look like Av-Matoran and have their body-shape and stuff.
... but what about Vultraz and Vican? They were originally Ta- and Le-Matoran, but they still have the same shape as a Karda Nui-enlarged Av-Matoran, which leads me to the following question;
If a being gets turned into a Matoran of Shadow, do they also technically become an Av-Matoran?

So, a Bricklink order came in Thuraday, and Mata Nui is out and about Giving Life!
Tumblr media
"By the power of Thornax!"
Tumblr media
...Vultraz is back! I'd never have said this in 2008 (I didn't love the Av-Matoran build), but he's very pretty.
Tumblr media
And both my childhood Kal are restored to me, now that my Pahrak-Kal is complete.
Tumblr media
My full Bohrok-Kal collection now--Nuhvok needs his correct Krana and having 2 Tahnoks was a happenstance bit of thrifting.
Tumblr media
"Hey, what are you looking at?"
Tumblr media
"Whom do you serve?" [/Christopher Lee voice]
Tumblr media
Yeah, Bionicles and dinosaurs would have been cool. We were robbed.

When it comes to Matoran languages, I know that the common language in the Matoran Universe is...well, Matoran. But the other day, I was mulling over some notes for something I had written before when I realized: what do they do when someone can't speak?
I don't mean someone who can't speak the language like the rahi, but someone who either lost their voice entirely due to an accident or maybe was "born" without a voice. Do they have some tools to try and repair or replace any possible wires that might be affecting their speech, or is it an organic component in their biology that can't easily be replaced or fixed? Or even those who completely lose their hearing or come into existence without their hearing? (If either are even possible to begin with, but let's just imagine here)
I was reading back on some of the old stories (namely when Mazeka and Jerbraz went to save Krakua from Vultraz), and I got hit with a curious thought for De-Matoran. If whispering is enough to disturb them, and possibly writing messages takes time (and causes noise since they're writing/scratching on stone), wouldn't it be easier and quieter for them to communicate via hand and arm gestures like how we (for example) have American or even Australian sign language? Or any other variation from around the world?
I know that Nuju speaks in clicks and chirps, but he also uses hand gestures. Now, whether any of those gestures are the Matoran variation of sign language or is just the equivalent of a person "talking with their hands" is up for debate, but it seemed like an interesting thought of it being like sign language he's using.
Just seemed like an interesting thought to mull over how they'd translate letters and words/actions using their hands and arms. Like, would some of them be close enough to what we would know and recognize, or would there be completely different hand shapes? Probably more the latter than the former, but I digress.

Toa Kra
In another universe part of Teridax's plan involved the abduction of the Great Disk Matoran after the return to Metru Nui and their transformation into dark Toa with the use of Shadow Leeches and a stolen Toa Stone. These Toa wear dark armor and resemble a mix of Hordika and Rahkshi. Toa of Inferno- Nuhrii- With his shadow flames Nuhrii burns all he sees. A task made easier with his Kalis Mask of Laser Vision. He uses his Blaze Burner to launch flames as far as he wishes and uses the bayonet on the end for close quarter combat. Toa of Floods- Vhisola- Mistress of the shadow waves Vhisola loves to use her Lebab Mask of Incomprehension to confuse groups of enemies and pick them off with her Coral Crossbow. Toa of Mountains- Ahkmou- Ahkmou commands the shadow stones in battle. He uses his Fazet Mask of Density to phase through enemy blows and increase the density of his Meteor Mace moments before impact. Toa of Quakes- Tehutti- With his Xirak Mask of Fragmentation Tehutti shatters the very ground below his enemies with his Seismic Spear and buries them in shadow earth. Toa of Storms- Orkahm- Slow and methodical Orkham calls on the shadow air to fight. With his Lomos Mask of Slowness he brings even the fastest enemy to a crawl leaving them wide open for his twin Cyclone Cannons. In a pinch he can attach the cannons to his back as jet boosters. Toa of Blizzards- Ehyre- Ehyre's shadow ice chills to the core. His favorite tactic is to freeze foes with his Ice Sickles before shattering them with his Descari Mask of Power Scream. Toa of Shadows- Vultraz- As sadistic and cruel as always Vultraz leads the Toa Kra. Wearing the Kraahkan Mask of Shadows his control of the darkness rivals that of a Makuta. His Darkness Daggers can cut through even light itself.

There really should’ve been a moment where Mazeka recognizes the Shadow Takanuvas as the same Toa he left to die in Destral, under the justification of prioritizing his grudge on Vultraz. Likewise, Melding Teridax would call Mazeka out on this revelation, since he seemed critical of Mazeka’s obsession back in Brothers in Arms.
I think it would’ve made those story beats feel a lot more meaningful and less arbitrary if those pre-existing connections were acknowledged, after all; Have Mazeka consider his own morality and mistakes, that moment’s juxtaposition of condemning the Shadow Takanuvas, but also sparing Vezon’s life.
Additionally, I find it interesting that Vultraz told Mazeka that he’s a reminder of the person Vultraz could’ve been... Considering Mazeka is caught between two potential, alternate versions of people from his universe, I think there could’ve been a thematic callback to that quote. Could Vultraz really have been a better person in a different life, or was he just referring to the ‘demeaning’ life of a hard working, law-abiding citizen?
Reversely, could Mazeka have been as awful? Considering the things he’s already done... Seeing how Takanuva isn’t anymore immune to the path of darkness would be jarring; How much worse would Mazeka be with a Shadow Leech? Vultraz never needed one, but could you argue the same for Mazeka? Of course, we know there’s a Melding Mazeka who was a hero, so Melding Teridax could also tell our Mazeka about him.
I think there’s a recurring idea of different possibilities and paths you could’ve taken in life; The person you could’ve been, facing that distorted reflection, and your messy reaction to it. Vultraz straight-up admits to Mazeka he considers him a reflection, so the reverse should naturally apply. And when you have Takanuva and Makuta fighting one another in a photo negative take on events, it makes you wonder what could’ve been, the kind of existential crisis, regret, but also hope that comes with the multiverse.

Do you think the Great Beings from the Melding Universe interrogated Vultraz, discovering that their counterparts instead of fixing the protodermis leak directly, instead create SIX FREAKING UNIVERSES (+one that kinda exploded) using the very material that, idk, going to blow the planet up if mined excessively plus is in high demand for war purposes
Prolly why there were so few left because they were murdered for their stupidity

When the Order revived the Makuta to use as lab-Rahi to test out Organics (on a sapient species they knew the Toa wouldn't care about them abusing), and nerfed and tortured the Makuta into submission, the Order called upon the 4 notable former Kra-Matoran to request the Matoran supervise the Makuta, promising that they'd keep the Makuta from hurting the Matoran. Over time, the Makuta's forced supervised stockholm syndrome kicked in. The Kra-Matoran have also evolved into low-level Makuta, making it easier for them to stand up to abuse by other Makuta.
Vican & Mutran: Have developed an "Employer and his one employee in his small tradeshop business who have worked there together for years" sort of relationship. They throw insults at each other and, to an outsider, look like they hate each other, but if you dare join in and insult either Mutran or Vican, the other will jump to defend him. Vican is also the most confident of the Matoran.
Antroz & Radiak: Antroz doesn't really see Matoran as beings as sapient as a Makuta, so his relationship with Radiak is more "Master and his Dog". Not "Dog" as in "Pet", but "Dog" as in "Man's Best Friend". Antroz spoils Radiak rotten, and even assigned Radiak as his second in command over the Makuta because he trusts that Radiak knows him well enough that the Matoran would be able to accurately guess what Antroz would decide and can lead in his absence. Gorast is... less than pleased that Antroz's pet has gained the position she has been working her mask off to seduce Antroz for. Radiak is the sweetest of the Matoran, as he has less of a need for aggression when one of the greatest Makuta warriors would break someone's bones for him in a heartlight beat.
Kirop & Chirox: Both were converted into females in the switch to organics. As Kirop is no longer a leader, she has lost her sense of responsibility and picked up on Chirox's "obnoxious brat" personality. The two have a similar relationship as Vican and Mutran have, but with the added bonus of both bonding over considering themselves better scientists than Mutran. Kirop is also one of the most charismatic of the Matoran, and her bratty personality was mostly picked up because she realised that that's how Makuta bond. As a former leader, she greatly values learning how to be the most charismatic in any group.
Gavla & Vamprah: Gavla is practically Vamprah's daughter. He appreciates that she was honestly loyal and respecting of his corrupting her, even without the shadow brainwashing. Gavla is also close to Krika, whom Vamprah is rather fond of. Needless to say, Vamprah is... less than enthused about Gavla's choice in partner, although he is a happy grandfather to her daughter Lonya. Gavla has lost a lot of her edge after an abusive relationship with Vultraz drove her into the kind and patient Pohanu's arms, but as the new queen of the late Takadox's kingdom, she can still stand her own if needed. She is one of the most mature of the four Matoran, and the only of them with kids (that they know of- Vican gets around).

Headcanon that when he was still being trained by The Order of Mata Nui, Krakua did not fully believe he was the one supposed to become a Toa, insecurity reinforced by the fact that he heard that maybe Mazeka would have been a better option since he had been the one saving his life and showing bravery and heroism when fighting Vultraz.
However, one day after a very rough training session with Helryx, Mazeka walks up to a battered and saddened Krakua and tells him that he believes he has what it takes to be a Toa, giving Krakua back the confidence he so much needed at that moment.
Idk, I just think it's wholesome and would have like to see them bonding more.

Having a sudden "I miss Bionicle a lot" moment because around now would be the time I'd spend all my time online staring at the pics of the summer wave, the smell of air conditioning makes me think of that. I'd be like "I AM GONNA BUILD THE NEW KONGU FIRST CUZ I ALWAYS GOTTA BUILD THE GREEN FIRST, THEN HMMMM LET'S SEEEEEE..."
Those summers where I'd just pick up the whole waves ughhhh that was like the peak of my summers then. Going on vacations and thinking "OK they HAVE to be out now" and begging my parents to take me to every Toys R Us. I'd come up short but then when they finally were up for order in the Lego Magazine or on their site it was like FINALLLYYYYY. The one summer wave I actually did manage to get while on a summer trip were the Glatorian Legends, I remember it cuz I just got my PS3 and wanted a new game and impulse bought Metal Gear Solid 4 along side Vastus and Mata Nui at a Toys R Us.
OH WAIT THE YEAR PRIOR we took a later summer vacation and I went to one of the mini Legolands and with my summer job money bought the big sets of 2008 summer wave pretty much all in one go, like I'm talking all of the vehicles (Axalara T9 is one of the GOAT sets), big Takanuva, even like friggin Vultraz and Mazeka. UGHHH I COULD GO ON FOR DAYS ABOUT BIONICLE SUMMERSSSS

The worst a Toa can do if they forgo the Code is establish a totalitarian regime and bring down the power of a tsunami on anyone who dares object. The worst a Matoran can do if they forgo the Code is... well actually Vultraz exists so blow up an entire town I guess? It's harder to go mad with power if you aren't a borderline deity, at least.
love that the Toa Code isn't just "don't kill your enemies" but also "if your enemies are about to die, you have to do what you can to save them." there must have been so many situations where somebody was about to get a convenient Disney villain death and a whole team of Toa looked at each other, sighed deeply, and intervened
also the fact that it doesn't seem to apply to Matoran... you just know there's a Matoran somewhere who said "oh my Toa can't finish him off?" and then picked up a gun. let's get this over with

Case File on the De-Matoran Krakua
CONFIDENTIAL:
FOR THE EYES OF HELRYX ONLY:
Our analysis suggests it would be risky to approach this Matoran and make him a servant of the Order. The reasons why, based on the intelligence you requested and our own observations, are listed below:
- Krakua is a De-Matoran living in De-Koro towards the outskirts of the Tren Krom Peninsula. We know there are exceptions (Mazeka) to the norm of villainy and deficiency that comes from there (see the files on Toa Nidhiki, and unconfirmed reports of the Ta-Matoran Vultraz’s return), and we are concerned that Krakua takes after the ethos of his homeland.
- De-Matoran, indeed any creature of Sonics, already exists with a weakness greater than any that other Toa or Matoran may face due to their own elemental belonging. These Matoran are incredibly susceptible to any noise louder than a scream, knocking them out with the same effect as that of a mask being removed. This would imply that he would have to be taken care of extensively, a usage of resources we would not suggest allocating at this time.
- Krakua is a bit of an anomaly in his Koro, as he hums to himself. This has made him a bit of an outcast, to put it charitably. As he walks from one place to another, his brothers avoid him, crossing away from his path or going into buildings before he notices them. There is something interesting about this point, though: he doesn’t notice them. He may be comfortable being himself, but he may also be absent-minded and careless; we have been able to train many of our servants and members to overcome these deficiencies, yet we worry that someone who has a flaw going so much against his own element could be a lost battle for us to wage.
- During the attack listed in our previous communique, our servant Mazeka was able to save Krakua from a sonic attack. Mazeka has already shown an aptitude for acting under stress and putting himself in harm’s way; because of this, we would use this example to suggest you instead consider making Mazeka a Toa and not the Matoran Krakua.
- Poring over the most recent reports of the conflict to come and any big battles that may arise, we worry that a being so lonely, so focused on things elsewhere, so determined to give himself to the mundane, would not be an asset of any kind to us. Does he have the possibility of growth? In our opinion he does. He has the spark to become something great, and we recognize how grateful we all are that we always investigate those beings we see having that spark. But from a purely tactical point, Krakua would serve no purpose. We are in the middle of a war, and we need beings that are certain, that will be physically capable and mentally focused, to help us truly turn the tide. This Matoran is best suited to solitude and that which is quiet, to intense focus and a purpose that involves determination. Unless there is some job of the sort that you need fulfilled (and, though we do not want to question you, we could not imagine what kind), we would suggest, in our expert opinion, that we leave this Matoran who has room to grow, but we may not yet grow for him.
