🔥Io Vulcanalia!☄️

On August 23rd the Romans celebrated the 'Vulcanalia', a festival dedicated to Vulcan. Like his Greek counterpart Hephaestus, Vulcan was a blacksmith who forged the weapons of the gods, but in his Roman form, he was mostly associated with fires, especially destructive ones, and volcanoes 🌋

During the Vulcanalia the Romans worshipped him by creating large bonfires and throwing fish and small animals into the flames, hoping to appease him enough to keep wildfire (common at that time of year) away from their settlements. Almost all temples to Vulcan were initially built outside of cities (eventually cities like Rome expanded around them), for fear that they would be originators of fires if the god was displeased.

I've depicted him in a warm orange and red palette, with his blacksmithing tools, a pilos hat, and flames in the background. I like to think he's the most hench of the gods with all his blacksmithing work, so I gave him a cheeky one-clasp chiton to show off the goods 💪

Vulcan Deities

When I saw this post by @timcurrysteeth about Vulcan Spirituality and their deities I inmediately knew I had to draw them.

I took it as a personal project to picture each deity and, in the future, create a series of illustrations of each one of them.

These are the initial sketches of the first 10 in the list, the designs are not final but I had a lot of fun working on them and thinking the elements I would add in each one based on their descriptions.

I highly recommend you give a read to the post, it's absolutely fascinating, as well as this second part.

This is going to be a long term project since I have several deadlines for other works but I hope to be able to update you soon enough with more sketches of the remaining deities!

Hephaestus

I'm kinda trying to have full body illustrations of all the gods (without Athena being in every single one lol) So here's Heph.

I'm honestly quite partial toward the guy. I feel like I'm ignoring a bunch of his myths to make it so but well, little bit of Erechtonius erasure ain't never hurt anyone lol

Especially if it means Athena and Heph can be good siblings (I feel like shit rn i need some nice things okay)

I love the bodyguard x person they’re protecting thing a lot but so many fics with it are so intense and I want that type of dynamic in a very,,, non-intense setting but the bodyguard is still treating it as intense

Rn I’m thinking “Human transporting their knitted blanket to a planet that really values handmade goods so they hire a bodyguard just in case and the bodyguard is really intense about making sure the Human is safe while the Human is just enjoying the trip”

I haven’t settled on what type of species the bodyguard should be, made up species? Vulcan? Klingon? Romulan? Ferengi? Dalek?

Also by the way this is supposed to be Ganymede if you've never heard of him. Basically the gist of his kidnapping across the various versions is that he was a son of Tros (A ruler or Troy). He was tending to his sheep when all the sudden Zeus as and eagle OR Zeus' eagle (Depending on the version) kidnap him. Why you might be saying? Well duh it's 'cause this immortal 1000+ year old man thought he was the most handsome mortal ever. Then Zeus basically said "Well you're really hot and handsome and I love you so you can be our cup bearer instead of Hebe (Goddess of Youth) because, well, like I said you're really hot." For all my non-ace's in the audience I tried to find an attractive depiction of him and I think this one might be it but most of the time he just looks like this...

Here are some more funfacts about Ganymede.

Ganymede and Zeus' relationship as stated a bit above is ....weird to say that least. Right? If you didn't say yes you've been reading way to much old men Yaoi. Well unfortunately this was a very common practice primarily in Japan (Specifically amoung Samurai) and ancient Greece. This practice was called Pederasty. Which was when a young man and an older man well... they did it (Dear all fanfiction writers this is weird don't write old men yaoi about this) I believe that this tradition comes from this so like Zeus didn't even know about this process and just said it was ok.

This one's for my astrology girlies and guys who just love space so much! The largest moon in our solar system is also named 'Ganymede' being 3,273.5 mil across ( 5268.18758km I looked that up BTW) is orbiting Jupiter. Jupiter is the Greek name for Zeus, I assume you know where this is going. It was fittingly named for their relationship with each other. The funniest part of this whole thing is that Hera, you know Zeus' wife AND SISTER! Isn't one of his 4 moons Ganymede, Lo, Callisto, and Europa. That's just tragic.
