he’s pretty old fashioned when it comes to most things; leaning his head back to look at you like you’re insane if you try to pay for anything, long legs striding right past you to open doors, a guiding hand on your waist when you’re walking together so you can keep up with him, etc. he’ll be damned if you ever do anything you don’t have to, always insistent on lending a large helping hand whenever you need one.

“Why don’t you just let me help you, huh? Always gotta have an attitude about it.” he made it sound so simple, like the act of him helping you clasp your necklace shouldn’t have you swooning like this, reeling in the rough callouses of his fingers against the back of your neck. of course he wasn’t really upset, shaking his head at your insistent remarks about being able to do it yourself. you could always tell when he was pushing you to accept the love he so thoughtfully handed to you, understanding when you needed a harsher tone or a soothing hand.

that’s just who he is; priding himself in keeping you safe and in the meantime securing every understanding he had of you in his mind, every fear, every goal, the things you’d dream about often enough to bring it up the next morning, he knew you and he knew what you needed, half the time before you knew it yourself. because that’s just who he is. that’s his job — at least that’s what he keeps telling you.

there were a million examples, and no matter how hard you tried to convince him, he’d do it again and again. coming back home after a rough day and cleaning himself up before picking you up from where you’d fallen asleep on the couch to take you to bed. ignoring the ache in his bones, hushing you with a kiss on your crown, and tucking you under the soft blankets ‘right where you belong’ because that’s just who Frank Castle is.

the scene on the boat honestly feels to me like kant's actions are just the culmination of a spiral that's been going on for a while now.

he’s being pulled in different directions that are fundamentally incompatible. protecting babe is the single drive that the entire show has been built around; none of the rest of the events in the show after the first part of the first episode happen without it.

at the same time kant genuinely has fallen in love with bison at this point. and there’s nothing he can do about it! he can't work for captain christ and protect bison but he has to be at his every beck and call to protect babe. by the time he admits to himself that he cares about bison too much to betray him he's already betrayed him too much.

i think he's known the whole time, on some level, that he’ll never be truly free of the captain. but he’s already made the choice. and even if he were honest with bison now what good would it do?

and yet he tells style he's going to stop working for the captain anyway. he even cites babe as one of the reasons.

this, honestly, makes no sense. nothing about the fundamental dynamics between him and his brother and the captain has changed. christ explicitly threatened babe in the first episode and — the way i read it — he hasn't stopped.

i don’t think kant is thinking clearly through the situation and deciding that the captain will never let him go so he might as well save the man he loves. i think he’s just desperately flailing at anything anything that would let him out. fox in a trap chewing off his own leg!

and so then the scene on the boat where he just. stops. i think there are multiple things going on simultaneously there — obviously kant is terrified and bison is a loose cannon — but it isn't his only option. bison is expecting to be cajoled and groveled to and what he gets is kant jumping wrists tied into the water. you can threaten me all you want, but i quit.....

ok so. I found the whole master sword decaying and breaking thing ridiculously funny once the cutscene ended and i got over it. bc. i've played sksw. i forged the darn thing. i had to haul the goddess sword through quest after quest (smth about dragon bathwater?) so i could put fi through flame after flame and finally get the master sword. and. and then i broke it. i spent so long putting it together and THEN I WENT AND BROKE IT??? anyway i found it funny kind of. full circle ig.

So, I know about Jester Contra, and I do enjoy Jester Contra. But my Contrarian decided he wanted a different career path: a magician! To show off his one and only magic trick: how to make the pristine blade disappear.

Apart from Narrator, who is his natural prey, I think his favorite victims friends he likes to torture mess with are Cheated and Stubborn. He knows not to take it too far, though. Stubborn could probably kill him with one blow, and Cheated will plot out his slow, dreadful demise.

I kinda wish I did more regarding Contra's relationship with Hero (I have so many ideas for Contrarian in general). Yes, I know about the ContraHero ship, and while I don't really ship anyone, I do understand where they come from. Especially this one.

Ayo? Austin Powers reference spotted? I personally think it would be hilarious if Narrator didn't know what Dutch people are, but Contrarian DOES.

In fact, a funny head cannon of mine is that Contra is the only character capable of breaking the fourth wall. Not the Narrator, not the Long Quiet, not even the Shifting Mound can do this. Only Contra.

Oh, yeah, I've nicknamed him Joyboy. Partially after [ERR: DATA EXPUNGED] from One Piece (if you know, you know. If you don't...uhh... Look, One Piece is a fantastic story, but it's really hard to recommend it. If you guys want, I can further rant about why in a separate post.)

You know, looking back on it, he looks eerily similar to Willy Wonka. I promise you, that's accidental.
