actually I haven’t stopped thinking about Lance getting blown up since I was 14 so here’s some headcanons for Lance’s back scars/recovery:

He has Hunk help him moisturize because it helps with fading/mobility (eventually he gets comfortable enough with the rest of the team to ask whoever is nearby when he needs)

He has chronic pain that is worse some days than others and randomly spikes and takes his breath away. He fights through it and gets really good at not letting it show, especially in battle because he needs to be at his best performance and can’t let himself miss shots because of it or show weakness for the enemy to exploit

He’s stiffest in the morning and religiously stretches to maintain mobility

He’s always taken hot showers but now they are literally a necessity to relax the muscles

He’s never exactly been body shy but definitely has some issues after the incident where he’s embarrassed to be perceived (until he inevitably embraces the hotness/gets so used to them that he forgets to be embarrassed or insecure)

He definitely has nerve damage that the healing pod wasn’t able to fully prevent or heal, so there’s dead spots where he can’t feel anything. The center spot of the damage is the most desensitized. Sometimes he gets hurt and doesn’t know until someone else points it out or he takes off his armor and sees the blood/bruising (the team is horrified when such cases happen and are Vigilant at checking him for injuries after they witness it the first time and realize what happened and why)

It’s no secret that Lance is Coran’s favorite, and it’s partly due to Lance saving his life. What only Allura knows is that Coran was absolutely certain Lance would become the best/most well rounded Paladin since Alfor because of how selfless and instinctually protective he is, even when he doesn’t know who he is protecting. It was the first indicator of just how grand Lance’s potential was, and he never failed to prove Coran right

Lance still gets nightmares, even years later and despite all the other horrors they’ve all experienced. That first experience of throwing himself in danger to save someone’s life sticks with him so thoroughly he can still sometimes feel the phantom heat at his back when he wakes up

idk I just think the show really glanced over so much of their trauma and this was a HUGE one for me personally, lol. everyone who writes about Lance���s back scars has my entire fucking heart in their hands <3

lance and keith can both make food, but lance cooks better. ive seen so many people go “lance cant cook” “keith can cook lance hardly can” BLAU BLAH BLAH!!!!!! lance can cook legitimate food, shit that’ll make you want more like he is WIFEY material. this man is an angel, an absolute master of cooking. desserts? that… doesnt matter. he can make basic stuff, but the elaborate things? hardly. (hunk helps him out most of the time when it comes 2 that, he is a god send.)

keith makes STRUGGLE MEALS. this boy will grab a soft tortilla, slap some ketchup, cheese, and then microwave it and call it a “pizza wrap”. he genuinely thinks its the best thing ever. if ur ever in a survival situation and u need edible food, hes ur guy. hes got that. but he cant really cook legitimate food for shit. he will make a basic sandwich, serve it to lance, and then call himself “housewife material”. he microwaves his tea. makes his hot chocolate with water. drinks sink water. what is wrong with him, no one fucking knows!!!!!!

I know lance is the flirt of the group, and he's 100% the kinda guy who would brag about his 'experiences' but like.

I think Keith would be better at flirting.

Because lance flirting is ridiculous pick up lines. It's making people laugh, it's making people have fun.

Keith flirting is smirks. It's whispered compliments next to someone's ear, it's lingering looks of appreciation.

And also because lance spent all of his teenage years at military school, and I find it difficult to believe that it would be easy to get laid in gender separated dorms.

And keith spent a year out in the desert living in a shack, so I genuinely think he'd have experience- a year is a long time to go without human touch, and human touch is easy to find in a one night stand, especially when you've got dark hair and pretty purple eyes.

team voltron and aspects of alienation

I've seen aspects of "not-belonging" in analyses of Lance and Keith's characters and I'd like to shed light on how it's a sentiment that's very well nestled in every member of Voltron.

Starting off with the alienation (ha, get it) that is most flesh out in canon, we have Keith. From the very beginning the show, Voltron is divided into three factions: the Alteans, the Garrison trio, and Keith and Shiro. Keith has trouble mingling with the trio due to Lance's harsh front towards him, and has slight trouble mingling with the alteans due to cultural divisions and difference in views. Then he finds out he's half-Galran and Shiro is removed from the equation, which removes him further from the team. He gains a sense of disconnect from the team due to his heritage, his lack of bonds, and his belief that he's a failure of a leader.

Lance's disassociation from the team is more subtle. It comes from his views of inferiority and the idea that he doesn't contribute to Voltron. Unlike Keith, his sense of alienation comes more from what he does rather than who he is. He doesn't believe himself to be skilled enough, and when he throws himself into gaining skill, he finds that he's not achieving enough. He finds himself becoming more and more irrelevant as time passes, as if he is blending into the background.

The divide between Allura and the team is a storyline that we were robbed of. It's so plainly laid out for the writers to pursue- the cultural differences between Alteans and humans, the unity the humans feel towards each other that they extend to her in friendship to no avail, as she doesn't understand it. The other paladins will not know the part of the war that she knows. They will not know the loss she knows.

Perhaps she finds comfort in Coran. But even the split between her and Coran may grow as she becomes a paladin and he remains support for Voltron. They're still close and they still care for each other, but the way you fight in a war, the things you see, they can define and shape you. War looks different from different angles. Coran has never been in a pilots seat. Hes never been in the mind meld. And he doesn't need to do these things to have a bond with the people he cares about, but he still may feel the distance in his mind.

Hunk's sense of isolation from the team was also something we were robbed of, but were were also robbed of everything when it comes to Hunk. There is a huge difference in drive and fight when it comes to Hunk versus the rest of the paladins. He is unable to throw himself so deeply into the fight it just- it scares him! And I'm sure it scares everyone else too, but can Hunk see that? He sees the way everyone else stands tall and fights and goes into battle and training every single day, and he doesn't feel made for that. He doesn't want to do that. And it makes him feel guilty for not having the "passion" everyone else does even though his heart is in his actions, but at the same time he constantly feels sick.

Shiro is someone who has been both physically and emotionally distanced from Voltron. His kidnappings have shaped and transformed him- but it's not only that he's changed, Voltron has changed while he's gone too. Shiro has left and come back to an entirely different team filled with people who have changed so much because that's what war does, it changes you. There are months of Pidge, Hunk, Lance, Allura, and Coran that he's missed and years of Keith that he's missed. And they'll welcome him with open arms, but it doesn't change the fact that he doesn't feel like he knows them as well as they know each other.

Lastly, there's Pidge. Pidge is a fundamental anchor of Voltron as she produces so much technology to aid the war effort. She throws herself into her work so much that it consumes her, and this ends up eating away at her connections a little bit. There's also the fact that the technological battle she's fighting to combat Galran interfaces and invention rates is a fight that the rest of the team aren't exactly a part of. They can support her, but ultimately it is only she that can do the work she does. This puts a lot of pressure on her and compels her to do even more. She spends so much time working that she misses so much with the others.

The point I'm trying to make is not that Voltron isn't close or that they aren't a family, but that they themselves might not feel close to the team they love. And it's not a sense of isolation felt by one or two members, but instead by all of them equally. I think that dreamworks could've really worked with this dynamic to show the fact that war can make people grow apart (opposite to how a lot of media shows war bringing people together; both are themes that can be explored). Dreamworks could've also taken this opportunity to let the characters grow as individuals and then come together as an even stronger team.

Keith glances up from the sketchbook in his lap, comparing the drawing to Lance as he naps next to him leaning against him with Kosmo at their backs, the warm spring afternoon sun washing over them.

There's a calmness in all of this that they don't get a lot of, not with running humanitarian and relief missions all over the literal universe. It's been several years since the end of the war, the Coalition is going strong as ever, but there are still hostile planets. They take those missions themselves with a few trusted members.

They've come back to Earth to visit Lance's family and spend some time with them, and get a bit of rest from all the running around. There's a calmness in Lance's face that he hasn't seen in a while, even in his sleep, and guilt pools in his stomach that he didn't realize it sooner. He knows Lance wouldn't fault him for it, they're both very busy both during missions and between them, and even in the calm moments they can't fully relax -- the years and years of fighting are so ingrained in their bodies that they're always expecting something to go wrong.

Looking back at the sketchbook, it hits him just how much of Lance he has committed to memory. The way his bangs sweep over his forehead and how Keith brushes them aside to press a kiss on it when he leaves early in the morning and Lance isn't awake yet. The thin brows over his deep blue eyes, ones he's smoothed his thumbs over before pulling him into a kiss. The gentle slope of his nose, with the bump where he broke it during a mission a few years back. The freckles dusting his cheek, the ones that Keith connects like constellations. His thin lips, soft and warm against his. The small, white cut that's barely visible on his chin where he cut himself shaving once. The mole under his jaw, near his ear that's made for Keith to kiss.

The blue Altean marks under his eyes, a reminder of what they've gone through that left them a little broken and incomplete, but also a comfort that those who left them will live on through their memories and stories.

He has all of Lance's expressions catalogued, tucked away in a neat little box. The furrow of his brows, the way he gnaws on his lips when he's deep in thought. How his eyes light up, crinkling at the corners and how his grin is lopsided, revealing his slightly crooked teeth whenever Keith makes him laugh. The way he scrunches his nose when something doesn't go his way. He thinks he could fill shelves upon shelves with all the different ways he could draw Lance, and he wouldn't even need to look at him.

Lance stirs next to him, burrowing his face in Keith's shoulder. Keith lifts his free hand, and cards through his hair.

"Sleep well?"

Lance only nods, and takes a deep breath. "I wanna stay like this forever."

"Even when it rains?" He asks, trying and failing to suppress a smile. "Even during hurricane season?"

Lance lifts his head to look at him properly. "Don't be stupid. Of course even then. You and Kosmo give off enough heat for me to steal."

"And what about the water?"

"We're not made of sugar, we're not going to melt."

Keith just laughs, and presses a fleeting kiss to Lance's lips. "You'd be the first to complain about how the clothes stick to you."

"I would not," he pouts, and Keith can't help it.

He brings Lance closer, their breaths mingling in the small space between them before he captures Lance's lips in a proper kiss. He loses himself in the feeling, the way Lance's fingers find their way into his hair, the softness of his lips, the way he has to swallow a little whimper as he kisses Lance at just the right angle.

The sketchbook and the pencil fall off his lap, and Lance pulls away to pick it up. He looks at the page Keith was drawing on, and a teasing smile pulls on his lips.

"What, do you have a crush on me that you drew me? That's so cute."

Keith just looks at him with his eyebrows raised. "We literally just made out and have been dating for years, but sure, go with that."

"Don't be a grumpypants, babe," Lance says, his eyes twinkling happily.

"Don't call me that."

Despite having years to get used to Lance's pet names, they still make him blush, but honestly, he's just so in love that he doesn't care. Not anymore.

"What, grumpypants?"

"Yeah."

"Or what?"

"I'm gonna make you regret it."

"Will you, now?"

"Absolutely."

as a korean who speaks both languages i adore keith being kor in certain hcs too but one of my favourite hcs is that when japanese!keith was a kid he 1. most definitely idolised shiro in part for the representation aspect and 2. shiro most DEFINITELY taught that boy some japanese to talk shit about their superiors in LMFAOOOO

She never corrects him so now Everytime they go to the state fair, even when Lance joins the little family for his first ever American fair, she'll smile and joke "say hi to ur dad Keith, he's missed you."

Keith is mad embarrassed by it but Lances laughter at the story makes it all the more bearable especially when that sunny smile is turned his way.

And for ppl who don't know big Tex he's the Texas state fairs 55ft tall icon that burned down once and they rebuilt his ass. The show must go on 🙌
