I’ve only seen it once so forgive me for not saying more—

—but my favorite sequence is by far the part where ROZ is watching Brightbill finally take flight, and she looks up to try and see him as he gets farther away, but then her view of Brightbill is blocked by the pop-up screen saying “Task Complete.”

And she has to rush after him to get her final look, because of that. Because the Task was getting in the way of her seeing him.

The reason I’m so glad they had Rand refuse to leave Rhuidean without Moiraine and also then have him carry her out in his arms is because it truly cements how important they are to each other even when they’d rather the other was not.

To Moiraine - Rand represents her mission, her duty, the color of her Ajah, the burden on her back. She forgets the man (the boy) he is and simultaneously fears the man he is. Because until she met him, all he was to her was a plan, a path forward, the reason she gave up everything that could have made her happy and instead dedicated herself to Saving The World. But now he lives and breathes in front of her and she is at a loss. Rand is a person, with thoughts and feelings and free will, and he comes with all the naivety and wisdom being a person comes with. She does not know what to do with him. She does not know how to handle him. She fumbles. She’s too hard on him. Too soft. Too mysterious. To forthcoming. So Rand does not trust her, even when she finally tries letting him set the pace. The damage is done.

To Rand - Moiraine is the cause of his world ending. She is the reason he will never marry Egwene and have children. She is why Mat is forever cursed, why Perrin is forever another, why Nynaeve and Egwene are now the women they once were told were the women of nightmares. She is why he ever questioned his father, his birthright. And then he is told that he is no longer himself and does not belong to himself, but is instead a tool to save or break the world. There is no one who can guide him or teach him or help him with the burden of his power. He is the most powerful being in the world and the most powerless. He is alone. He is responsible for all. So of course he balks, of course he pushes back, of course he cannot implicitly or blindly follow Moiraine. She expects everything of him, says she knows the way things must be, but he is the one who has to walk the path.

And yet…

They need each other. They do understand each other in a way no one else ever can. Not Lan. Not Egwene. Not Lanfear. They share the burden of turning The Wheel. Their hands are on the spokes and they are pushing and pulling, trying to set out on course. The storm rages, the shadow rises, the dawn comes, and they must go on. That is all there is to it.

So Rand will not leave without Moiraine; and Moiraine will not leave Rand to his own.

They are threads woven together that may split and fray but they will never break from one another.

Episode five and six of Happy of the End dealt with the aftermath of the death of Keito's Haoran's mother, so this Black Brooder is completely dark now.

He sits in the dark contemplating his life and how much he hates it.

And even though Chihiro brings light to his life (as well as food), Haoran remains dark.

However, Chihiro is the perfect person to lift Haoran out of this darkness because no matter how shitty Chihiro's life is, he continues to be colorful.

His family has disowned him. He gets fired from his job. Yet he is still light.

Kaji, who he considers a friend, is rude to him and belittles his relationship with Haoran, yet he stays light.

And that's why when he gets the slightest indication that Haoran needs his help, he quickly reaches out to him.

He takes Haoran from the dark into the light as they walk around the city from the night into the morning.

He gives him a gift, not only of warmth in his moment of coldness.

But also the gift of color.

And because of this one moment of warmth in Haoran's cold existence, this moment of light in Haoran's dark life, this moment of color in Haoran's black world, he believes he can die now. Is it because he has finally had a moment of joy? Is it because he thinks he will never experience it again?

It isn't clear, which isn't a problem because either way Haoran has settled into the idea that death is a suitable outcome, but Chihiro is more than willing to die right next to him, which is a problem.

Because Haoran doesn't want Chihiro to die. He doesn't want to dim Chihiro's light. He wants Chihiro to live.

And that's what gives Haoran the will to live.

Haoran isn't living for himself anymore because he isn't alone anymore.

He still has the darkness.

But he doesn't seem to be afraid of the light the way he was before. He tells Chihiro he likes him. He tells Kaji they are boyfriends.

He cries because he realizes he has something to lose, but that also means he has something worth keeping.

So even though his darkness pops up when he argues with Chihiro because he hasn't revealed his past,

Once Chihiro appears next to him in his confrontation with Maya, that color reemerges.

And he finally bares his soul and body to Chihiro and tells Chihiro how truly dark his past was.

And a shift happens.

For the first time since Haoran was a child, he is light.

Even as he is forced to run away from Maya again, he has someone to run with him. Even though his world is still dark, he sees the light.

So it's no surprise that Maya decides the easiest way to bring Haoran back into the darkness is to kill the light.

Behold! New soundtracks!

Over a year ago I was approached by Athena with an invitation to make music for The Narrative Parable Ultra Deluxe Visual Novel, which was an opportunity I simply could not pass up! It was so much fun making music that was out of my comfort zone [I had never done eery/tense soundtracks at the time] and it pushed me to experiment in ways I hadn't before. The game has been discontinued, but I'm still very proud of how all the soundtracks sound and am excited to share them all with you!!

I had requested my music be released on 4/27, but I've yet to hear anything from the Routenote mod team and it's not Spotify-
