A Beautiful Corpse

If I am lucky, they say, I will leave behind a beautiful corpse.

A body of work beautiful and beloved, unmarred and unravaged, perfectly prepared and preserved, anointed by the praise of all who knew me and many who did not, gilded by the great, honored by the humble, blessed to speak on forever to generations of artists who revere my name.

If I am lucky, they say, my grave will be visited for generations. Everything I am will be etched into the stones that protect my beautiful corpse, standing untouched for millennia unspoiled by vandals, and every time my name is uttered my corpse will breathe and speak again, and it shall never die.

If I am lucky, they say, my tomb will one day be robbed. Someone will stumble across it and my corpse will be plundered, examined and cataloged in detail, taken to an unknown place and displayed for its beauty, where unknown people will stare at it in awe or passing curiosity and forget  that it ever belonged to a person at all.

Going through boxes in my garage and I stumbled across some old high school art projects where I drew comics on literal clay tablets

And it occurred to me that these are without a doubt the pieces of my art that will survive the longest after my death. My sketchbooks will rot and my digital art files will be unreadable on future software. But these clay tablets could last millennia
