A Vintage Halloween Experiment
Maybe because I play cinema-inspired dress up all year as a hobby, recently I’ve been drawn to less specific costumes for Halloween festivities.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
This spooky-season look was a mix up of inspirations from the first two decades of the 20th century. I’m not much of a pinterest girly, but I’ve had some adorable (context-less) 1910s and 1920s costumes of bats, moths, and butterflies saved for years and have always wanted to make one of my own. I love the practicality of pairing a simple tunic or one-piece with decorative wings. Lucky me, I had this old spiderweb tablecloth that was just the right size! The next time I break out this costume, I’ll definitely make little bat ears to match!

As for the hair and makeup, the Italian silent-film star aesthetic is still very much my ideal, so I loosely based my hair and makeup on Pina Menichelli. Since the eras of Menichelli and the costume inspiration roughly align, I think they paired pretty well!

Of course I had to complicate matters for myself and experiment with lighting to capture the costume. What that resulted in was a handful of photos that have a distinctly 1980s vibe… Definitely not what I was going for, but fun photos to take nonetheless.

Happy Halloween all! If you dress up, what are you more inclined towards: specific people/characters/topical gags or more general Halloweenie costumes?

Vintage Inspiration || The Beginning Of The Beginning
In which a naturally fast and old school girl with no cursed energy whatsoever, gets intertwined into the affairs of a sorcerer and her good friend Itadori.
Now here she is, broke and not amused by the sudden turn of events that have gotten her stuck in the strange school of teenagers, a stranger boss, and a vile thousand year old man that wants to eat her.

Hello, friends!
It's not long until next month's letter, but in the meantime why not check the last one? It's dedicated to Japanese woodblock artist Shirō Kasamatsu ⛩️🗻
And if you don’t know what The Attic is, it’s a selection of artworks (mostly vintage and mid-century) compiled and shared in the form of a newsletter.
In short: things that I find inspiring mixed with things that I make.

🌸 Timeless Elegance: A Journey into Vintage Charm 🌸
Today's image captures everything we love about classic charm: an elegance that transcends time and remains unmatched. This timeless beauty, with a look inspired by the 1950s and '60s, reminds us of the iconic Audrey Hepburn, a symbol of grace and femininity.
The subject, with her charismatic gaze, wears a pearl necklace that adds a touch of classic elegance. The pink flowers in her hair convey delicacy and romance, perfectly in harmony with the pastel-toned background, which further enhances her timeless beauty.
The roses framing the image tell a story of softness and love. The contrast between the delicate colors and the model's strong expression represents the duality of femininity: both fragile and powerful.
This image is not just a celebration of vintage fashion but also a reminder of how classic style is always in vogue. The floral details, pearls, and captivating look inspire us to bring a bit of this magic into our daily lives, reminding us that true elegance is timeless.

Free pattern to retro look: The Laelia Tunic
This one is pratically a perfect translation. I think the vintage dress is a bit less full, and there might be some kind of trim at the neck (I cant really see), but other than that... yeah, that's the same dress.
Fabric wise, you'll need something drapey. On Spoonflower, I'd go with one of the jersey, either the Modern Jersey if you're not afraid of polyester (it's period and the colors really pop on it), or the Organic Cotton Jersey for a natural fiber option.
Print-wise, Spoonflower has no shortage of zebra prints. I couln't find a perfect match (I didn't look that long either, let's face it), but here are two yellow and hot pink ones (from whimsy&mojo and valex) and a generally warm-colored one by odettel. I myself have a zebra print available in my shop, and I think it's pretty cool (it's available in other colors but that's the best one imo). Your local fabric store probably carries zebra prints as well, but I have no way to know ^^
So here we are! Let me know if you have a retro pic you'd like a pattern and fabric options for!

One way to make a dress like that:
Base pattern: Elderberry dress from Mood.
The front bodice is pretty good as is. For the back bodice, you could either dip it and use a shorter zipper, or dip it and move the zipper to the side like the original (or do nothing, which is probably what I would do :) ). You might want to bone the bodice to help with the silhouette.
For the skirt, I would go with a circle skirt instead of the one on the pattern. Well, I would go with two circle skirts, one for the base, and one opened at the front for the over skirt (with maybe a little cut out around the opening).
For the sleeves, you could use the top of one of the sleeves in the Valli set, or just take a short sleeve from another dress pattern (it might not even be that difficult to draft tbh).
The whole point of the dress is more in the fabric and trim, in the end. You'll need a base fabric (here, silk, I'd probably use cotton) and a sheer overlay, ideally silk organza (but the polyester kind would work as well as is much cheaper). The bodice and both skirts are using both fabrics, the sleeves only the organza. Then you'll need a ton of gold braid for the neckline and the skirt, and some some crystals to beddazzle it.
