If there’s one thing many of us have learned the very hard way this year, it’s that billionaires control too much of our world. From politics to wages to the quality of our day-to-day lives, a few people at the top dictate what it means to live on this planet right now.

And now more than ever, we need a combination of major change and caring for community. This means a lot of work ahead of us! When I think of this work, I picture a fork with a few extra tines. And each of those little prongs is something we need to do. That includes voting/running for office/ holding our elected officials accountable. It means protesting and showing up to protect others. It means caring for others in our community. It means changing up our own personal habits and decisions. And it also means thinking about the power of money.

The things we do every day that feel minor can actually be these radical acts that will steer us toward a better future. And all of the people out there trying to do things in a better way via their small businesses are a really big part of that: redefining what it means to be a business, employer, and worker, while also ensuring that their work benefits their communities. Yeah, not all small businesses are great (it turns out that there are terrible people in every field of work), but I see so many out there doing the work of educating others.

And more than ever...small businesses are afraid.  The US tariffs are having a more instant impact on small businesses than big corporations. Why? Because even businesses that make their products in the United States still need to buy things like materials, packaging, and shipping supplies. And right now, most of those things are imported. That's not changing any time soon.  Even if a maker uses upcycled materials, changes are that they still need things like thread or tools.  And those things...yep, imported. 

Yesterday @ideas_and_objects commented something very wise (that inspired me to make this post today): "please remember YOU control who stays In business… YOUR DOLLAR SPENT votes for who survives."
