Shri Vamsidasa Babaji disappearance day On Janmashtami he was in Baleshvar, a town in North Orissa. At midnight he said to Gopal, “Last year I gave You some palmfruit. This year I shall give You some mango. Gopal, don’t be impatient, mango is coming to You.” Within ten minutes a brahmana teacher called Jogendra Mukherjee arrived, explaining how he had just dreamt that a sadhu wanted a mango, so he went to the market and bought one. That brahmana was then told, “Yes, yes, you come. He said he wanted a mango.” (From HH Bhakti Vikasa Swami’s book on SBSST.) Shrila Bhaktisiddhanta Sarasvati Thakura also received the blessings of Shrila Vamsidas Babaji Maharaja in Navadwip. Seeing Shrila Sarasvati Thakura, Shrila Varmsidasa Babaji Mahasaya would say, “Someone very close to my Gaura has come to me.” Vamsivat Babaji was a Gaudiya sadhu who lived at Swarupa Gunj during the time of Shrila Bhaktisiddhanta Saraswati’s mission. He was respected by Shrila Bhaktisiddhanta, and he used to see to it that Vamsivat Babaji was provided with grains and so on by Gaudiya Matha brahmacaris, whom he’d send to Swarupa Gunj from the Yoga Pitha Mandir. https://www.instagram.com/p/CSdxSOeg0Pi/?utm_medium=tumblr

A Chat with Simran Thandani ‘05 on Yoga and Meditation
In its broadest sense, self-care is just about anything one does to take care of or be good to oneself. WU is always interested to know what this looks like for members of the Wellesley community!
I recently chatted with Simran Thadani ’05 about this, prompted by an Instagram post celebrating Sim’s 365- (which ultimately became 451-) day streak of practicing meditation, with help from the Headspace app. I was interested to know more not only about her self-care practice, but also how she was able to remain committed to the process in the context of a busy schedule.
Rewinding slightly, however, I first wanted to know about Sim’s self-care practice during Wellesley and in graduate school. She graduated summa cum laude and later went on to receive a PhD in English from the University of Pennsylvania — which, she readily admits, made her very much the “Wendy Wellesley” archetype, subscribing to the “sleep when you’re dead” mentality. Her mother attempted to get her to try yoga and meditation (not least because her name, “Simran,” means meditation!), but Sim was not interested; despite being Indian by origin, she didn’t immediately connect with these practices. However, a back injury finally led her to yoga in 2009 — and she loved it, practicing off and on in local gyms for the next several years.
Fast forward to 2016. By now, Sim had finished grad school, but had a hectic job, keeping her frazzled and constantly exhausted. She realized that wanted to feel “more centered and calm.” After hearing about the Headspace app from a friend, she waded into meditation, and used the app to engage in 451 straight days of meditation before breaking her streak... by falling asleep on the couch on a random Thursday evening!
When I asked her about the role that meditation plays in her self-care practice today, she said that, in school, she didn’t give herself much downtime, but by carving out space for meditation daily, she created a habit or tradition of making time for herself to recharge and recenter. “I’ve seen the effects of meditation specifically around reactivity. Meditating has helped me create critical space between my initial, lightning-quick gut assessment of a particular incident and my ultimate response — thereby giving me a sense of equanimity. By the way, I love that that word literally means ‘equal mind, (from the Latin aequus animus) — geek alert!”
Tumblr media
Sim also completed a 200-hour Yoga Teacher Training certification in 2018. For a long time she had dreamed of completing her training at Vikasa Yoga Retreat in Koh Samui, Thailand, but a fractured ankle from a YOLO trip to Iceland prevented her from traveling much in 2017. About a year in, she realized that her bucket list item was the training itself, and not the venue… So she enrolled at her local studio, going to classes on nights and weekends for 15 weeks. “It was a pretty different experience than beaches, sand, and palm trees… But unexpectedly, it was the perfect training for me after all: learning from teachers I already knew; forming new friendships right at home in SF; and a deep devotion and emphasis on the spiritual roots of yoga.”
Hearing this, I was curious to get Sim’s opinion on cultural appropriation, given yoga’s increasing global reach and her own South Asian heritage. She differentiates between respect/appreciation and co-opting. “As an Indian, I’m proud and happy to share yoga with the world,” she says, “so it doesn’t feel less authentic to be taught yoga by non-Indians, so long as there is no active disrespect — because ethnicity aside, my teachers absolutely have more knowledge of yoga and spirituality than I do! In fact, Teacher Training taught me just how much yoga has evolved over time. Even the great teachers braided together Western and Indian athletic and wellness practices. And there are precious few surviving yogic manuscripts, as it was all an oral tradition. So ultimately there is no single, unbroken ‘yogic lineage’ to get on a high horse about, anyway…”
A few years ago, Sim took issue with her yoga studio putting portraits of Hindu gods on the walls, because it meant that students were doing headstands and other inversions by kicking their feet up against the deities (a classic sign of disrespect in Hindu culture). But when she provided feedback to the studio, they responded positively, and eventually repainted the walls entirely!
In closing, we discussed the #WellesleyEffect and the part that meditation/mindfulness plays in countering the stress of high expectations and constant achievement. Sim confesses that while she did feel an egotistical sense of achievement in her 451-day meditation streak, yoga/mindfulness in general has taught her about focusing more on the process or journey versus the final goal. Practicing yoga has become about discipline — but also about not judging herself too harshly; for example, Sim says, “I’m surprisingly not obsessed about doing a particular pose ‘perfectly,’ whatever that means.” Instead, in defining success, she considers how peaceful she feels internally — but even this is a work in progress, because there is still “that Wellesley part of me that’s driven by making a difference in the world and all the external markers of achievement we normally care about.” Part of her yoga practice, however, is not so much about making that linear, “career ladder,” “best in class” ambition go away, but about learning to dust herself off and accept that life is not always linear.
Finally, when I asked Sim to describe self-care in a single sentence, she responded: “caring for myself through yoga/meditation allows me to better care for others.”

Rattan yoga pods create "space of captivating calmness" for studio in Bangkok
Thai architecture studio Enter Projects Asia has used rattan to enclose a series of studios for yoga brand Vikasa at its headquarters in Bangkok.
Enter Projects Asia used rattan – a type of climbing plant with a flexible woody stem – as the main material to break up a 450-square-metre space in a triangular-shaped block in downtown Bangkok into a series of yoga studios.
The studio is shortlisted for leisure and wellness interior of the year at Dezeen Awards 2020.
Rattan was used to enclose private yoga studios
Supported on a frame of Thai timber, the material was used to partition two public yoga studios and fully enclose two smaller, private studios.
The architecture studio wrapped the spaces in the natural material to create "an urban oasis in the chaos of Bangkok – a retreat from the grind".
Rattan was chosen as it can be found on the island of Koh Samui of the east coast of the country, where yoga brand Vikasa had a retreat.
"All elements of the project were made from natural, local materials to be a hub or a portal for their existing location, which is based on a hillside in Koh Samui: Thai hardwood, local black slate, bamboo and most notably, rattan," said Enter Projects Asia design director Patrick Keane.
"The result is a space of captivating calmness, cloaked in quiet contentment – an oasis of tranquillity amongst the chaos of Bangkok," he told Dezeen.
The studio's reception has a rattan desk and light feature
Along with the pods, rattan was used to create light fittings in the studios and a large, sinuous desk that dominates the reception area.
The desk becomes a bench for those waiting for classes and turns into a light feature that winds its way above the reception area,  ending in a woven lampshade above the main staircase.
The rattan light feature hangs above the stairs
The three-dimensional rattan forms were created in collaboration with specialist furniture designer Project Rattan by combining traditional weaving techniques with digital design.
"We facilitated the fusion of 3D technologies with local Thai craftsmanship to bring nature to an urban context," explained Keane.
"We worked using 3D software, special effects modelling namely Maya and Rhino. Frames and templates were all printed on giant templates for the craftspeople to use as guides for their weaving techniques."
The rattan desk turns into a bench
Overall, Enter Projects Asia hopes that it has created a space that communicates a sense of spirituality
"It embraces all five senses, with soft geometry to counter hard urban edges, tactile materials that are touchable and natural, the smell of nature, and the technical acoustics – as good as a radio station – and the food and beverage Vikasa provides," said Keane.
Rattan forms are visible from outside the building
The studios occupy the first floor of Vikasa's headquarters, which has a cafe area on the ground floor, with the rattan forms designed to be visible through large glass windows from the street.
Previous yoga studios on Dezeen include a bamboo pavilion nestled in the jungle in Tulum designed by CO-Lab Design Office and a muted studio with a textured sisal ceiling in Melbourne.

When the owners of the Vikasa Yoga Retreat ⁣ decided to open another location in the heart of Bangkok, they realized they couldn’t simply transport the retreat’s rustic aesthetic to the heart of the metropolis - the original location sits on a hillside on the Thai island of Ko Samui overlooking the sea. The new facility would have to be both meditative and modern, but its peaceful interior also a reflection of the vivid pulse of the city outside. The owners turned to Enter Projects Asia (enter projects) to design Vikasa on 24 ( vikasabangkok), the new urban yoga space in a 5,000-square-foot space on the second floor of a concrete, steel, and glass building. The Enter Projects Asia team decided to treat the studio as a vessel to be explored using a series of sinuous rattan tubes that snake through the interior, occasionally ballooning overhead like clouds.⁣ ⁣📷: Edmund summer #edmundsumner #vikasayoga #interiordesign #hospitalitydesign #yogastudiodeisn⁣ #sandow #gadarchitecture #gadfoundation #architecture #architect #InteriorDesign #InteriorArchitect #InteriorDesigner #facade #building #stone #architecturephotography #design #designer #archilovers #architectureprojects #amazingarchitecture #Contemporary #arquitectura #design #architecturaldetail #architectural #architect #architectureporn #architecturephoto #digitaldesign #computationaldesign https://www.instagram.com/p/CCljuLvpKz8/?igshid=6xda0o4gl81r
