Jawan (2023) Spoiler Review
I urge anyone and everyone to watch it because it is so much fun from beginning to end. Also, SRK is just ugggghhh so damn hot.
Spoilers from here on out.
Alright, let me get this out of the way first: the movie was very massy and I loved it. That said, I wasn't completely blown away by the story and delivery because I'm up to my eyeballs in south Indian mass movies.
Now, there are people who look down on very massy action films. They think it's inferior or not nuanced enough. Some like only certain mass films and think that the ones they like are the superior kind of mass movies. If you're that kind of person, we're gonna have problems.
One, Jawan isn't a mindblowing film BUT it is undeniably a fun film with lots of exciting action, a good and tight storyline, and good songs.
SRK is SRK. There's a reason fans call him King Khan. His charisma is off the charts. He is great as Azad and absolutely breathtaking and unforgettable as Vikram Rathore. I am serious about the unforgettable part. I fear that his next characters, especially if they're older guys, will be compared to the legend Vikram Rathore. I almost wish Atlee would make a sequel because I want to see Vikram again, in his silver fox era, going on missions with his team (and his son somewhere there).
I wasn't really surprised with the DILF in this movie because I do think Atlee has some daddy issues. If you've seen his older movies like Mersal and Bigil, you might have noticed that the dad characters are given banger bgms and better entry scenes (Vetrimaaran and Rayappan, respectively). Vijay's title card in Mersal was Vetrimaaran's theme, while the title card in Bigil has Rayappan's theme/BGM. But Atlee killed them off in those two movies, so he subverted his own tropes in Jawan (THANK GOD BECAUSE WE WOULDN'T HAVE GOTTEN VIKRAM RATHORE OTHERWISE - sorry, I will not shut up about Vikram okay).
The Girls. Who doesn't love the women of Jawan? Seriously. They absolutely made me giddy with excitement. One, because they were awesome, and we so their backstories and how loyal they were to Azad, and how Azad loved them and was loyal to them, too. Also, that time they called him because he was in the biggest fight of his life (WEDDING NIGHT)! That was honestly the cutest shit ever. If you saw Bigil, Atlee was gunning for that, too, but Bigil is more tamed seeing as it is a sports movie.
Nayanthara and Deepika as they love interests are really good. I was so sad when I learned Aishwarya's fate (shoutout to Atlee who *also* named the mom here Aishwarya -- they're both strong, amazing women). Nayanthara is so damn good and so damn cool (but I am biased towards Jayam Ravi/Nayanthara pairing lmao).
That Sanjay Dutt cameo! Oh, man, I laughed and clapped! I had such a ball of a time. And the revelation that they were friends and he had been helping him all along! Aaaaaah, so satisfying to see honestly. Atlee, why don't you make this a series? I wanna see more of all of them.
Now, on to some things that didn't feel so satisfying to me:
I have seen Vijay Sethupathi play the villain role several times. His performance as Bhavani in Master and Vedha in Vikram Vedha (2017) are tough to beat. It's also really difficult not to compare his performance in Jawan to his performance in those two films because I had such high expectations (yes, I know, my fault a little bit). I feel like his charisma that he usually brings to the table was only seen in small parts, bits and pieces. So, that felt a little bit underwhelming.
Okay, so I like the songs! Anirudh has shown how versatile he is in producing different song genres (but currently movies and fans expect hero-elevation music from him, and that is completely understandable). But I couldn't pinpoint Vikram or Azad's main theme or main bgm. I'm recalling all the Bollywood movies I've watched over the years, and perhaps this isn't a thing in Bollywood films? (Again, if you think having specific bgm for the hero's entry or badass moment is corny, this review isn't for you, sorry, I'm into that shit, I grew up on anime). I know there's a bgm for Azad's entry at the jail and there's literally a song called Vikram Rathore but they just didn't stand out much. You can, of course, argue that SRK doesn't need bgms to elevate him to god-like status. That's true. This is just a me thing, as someone who looks forward to such bgms in mass movies from the south.
OK, I didn't think my review would be this long. I just had many thoughts while watching Jawan. Anyway, like I said, this one is a total banger of a movie. SRK is an absolute joy to watch! What an amazing performer and actor!

Ever since I saw Ponniyin Selvan, I’ve been on a quest to watch many Tamil movies, since I think the last Tamil film I watched before the PS saga was Kandukondain Kandukondain (that was at a time when I was watching Jane Austen adaptations non-stop!) I’ve been choosing in a rather erratic way from films that either were directed by Mani Ratnam or starred Trisha, Vikram, Aishwarya Rai Bacchan, Jayam Ravi, Karthi or Jeyaram. (As far as I’m aware, neither Aishwarya Lakshmi nor Shobhita Dhulipala have acted in other Tamil movies? I do have Shobhita’s Prime show to watch though.)
The other actors whose movies I’m also watching are Vijay Sethupathi and Samantha Prabhu because I saw their acting in “Farzi” and “The Family Man” (both Hindi-language OTT series directed and produced by two Telugu gentlemen so really very all-India!) After I watched Thani Oruvan, I added Nayanthara and Aravind Swamy to the list so … basically, I’m set for like the next 20 years ;)
Sometimes I get lucky and two of the actors are in THE SAME MOVIE. Which brings me to the fact that I watched “Unnakum Ennakum” last night, and my goodness, Arulmozhi Varman and Kundavai Devi were SUCH BABIES in this film. (Also, much closer to the ages of their characters in Kalki’s novel - Arulmozhi Varman is 19 and Kundavai is 21, and Aditha Karikalan is 25 … so yeah.) This movie came out in 2006 so I think Trisha was 23-24 and Ravi was about 25-26?
Farming is HARD WORK, y’all, but this boy was willing to collect cow dung in his bare hands for the sake of Trisha. And who wouldn’t! (Vandiyadevan would die for her, but would he plow and plant rice and milk cows? Hmm?)
This picture is for contrast! They’re still beautiful, but definitely not playing 19-21 year olds any more :)

Favorite Color:
since black is not a color (but I like it most) I always go with copper.
Currently Reading:
through several pages of 'Rache Bartmoss' Brainware Blowout —the hardware and software compendium for Cyberpunk' to get a better feel for netrunning and what programs Jaysen and Vijay prefer to use. tbh, it gives me a headache. I'll be picking some programs each of them will favor to use but might as well decide, they are capable to use most of them that are not super special. It's too much for my brain. (thank you Ry and Thy for choosing not to make use of netrunning at all).
Last Song:
These are the fools that men adore Both their gods and their men are fools Every number is infinite There is no difference
We Ride Mad Crucified By commands
Love Faderhead. German EBM, would be perfect for Cyberpunk since the guy himself is a fan of that overall CP genre since Neuromancer I've read. Is one of his tracks in the new CP radio station? I doubt it. I strongly want to make a playlist what I'd like to have as a German Techno(ise) radio station (and what probably would be Ry's favorite station to listen to).
Last Movie:
The Batman (already a rewatch). Best Batman there is yet.
Last Series:
still some Supernatural episode.
Sweet, Spicy, Savory:
mostly love spicy but right after that I need sweet. savory is alright.
Craving:
a good sleep and more energy to do something.
Tea or Coffee:

Leo (2023) Directed by Lokesh Kanagaraj Yesterday, at 5 PM, the title of Vijay's next movie was revealed, along with the release date and a promo video. What's very exciting about this for me is that it's his second collaboration with Lokesh Kanagaraj. I have loved every single one of Lokesh's movies, and I enjoyed "Master" greatly. So I am really looking forward to this, and it has music by Anirudh Ravichander too. These two people can do no wrong in my opinion! The teaser is very similar to the title reveal video for "Vikram", very similar shots and camera moves. Like the promo for "Vikram", I think it doesn't have any actual footage from the movie itself, it's its own thing. We see intercut footage of Vijay making chocolate, and Vijay forging a sword, and then these two elements kind of sync up with him dipping the forged sword into chocolate! He says the tagline of the movie "Bloody Sweet", and we see the title of the movie "Leo" with the release date of 19 October 2023. You hear an eagle sound, and an eagle flying in one shot of the teaser, which could be a reference to 'the eagle is coming' line from the "Once Upon a Time" song from "Vikram". As mentioned, this teaser is very similar to the "Vikram" title reveal video, which has to be intentional, so whether this movie will also be part of the Lokiverse or not, we will have to see. The "Bloody Sweet" song reminded me of the track "34 Ghosts IV" by Nine Inch Nails, it's not the same but gave similar vibes to me. It's really great. Can't wait to watch the movie! Also, I must mention @niveddo because, it's through his Instagram Stories that I got to know about this title reveal. I drew Vijay from the end of the teaser video. The drawing is done with 0.5 mm 4B mechanical pencil on a new A5 sketchbook that was recently gifted to me. Mimi:The Film Review
Nothing like what you're expecting!
Image of Kriti Senon in the film's Poster Plot: This film is about a dancer who becomes a mother without marrying. What could be the reason she became a mother? Her dream was to become a heroine. What happened in her life that caused her to abandon her dream of becoming a heroine? Would her parents accept her child and society accept an unmarried mother? Would her child learn the name of the father? Watch the movie to know all the answers. Tone and Theme: This film has a comedy drama tone. Its theme is about emotions and caring. The goal of making this film was to entertain, but emotions have also been added in abundance. Acting and Characters: What a immense, high powered, and astounding acting Kriti Sanon has done in the role of Mimi; this role is the most challenging and well built of her film career so far; it is unbelievable that this is Kriti Sanon, who is completely lost in her role and has put her whole heart into it, whether it is her humor, facial expressions, dialogue delivery, and Rajasthani language accent, Rajasthani dresses, emotional scenes, what an acting she has done with such a Pankaj Tripathi's acting in the character of Pandey is also great; he is a specialist in playing comedic roles. His acting is also excellent; there are no flaws in his performance; he has given this role his all. Sai Tamhankar's acting in the role of Shama is also very good; her and Mini's chemistry is amazing, and she left no stone unturned in whatever role she was given. Supriya Pathak, Manoj Pahwa, Evelyn Edwards, and Aidan Whytock's acting in supporting roles is also good; the acting of all of these people contributes to the story's strength. Direction: It is directed by Laxman Utekar, who is also a successful cinematographer; previously, he directed Tapaal (2014), Lalbaugchi Rani (2016) in Marathi, and Luka Chuppi (2019), Zara Hatke Zara Bachke (2023) in Hindi and has done cinematography for Teri Baton Mein Aisa Ulja Jiya (2024); if you look at his record, he appears to be the most successful in both departments; such people are rare in the film industry; all of the films he has made are better than the others; this also falls into the same category; he has a grip on the entire film, from beginning to end; also not allowed the film to deviate from its course; he has paid full attention to even the smallest details. Story and Screenplay: Laxman Utekar and Rohan Shankar wrote the story together. The story is based on the Marathi film Mala aai Vhhaychy, but the screenplay is excellent, with no flaws. Dialogues of Rohan Shankar are extremely funny and hilarious, with a Rajasthani accent. Cinematography: Akash Agarwal's is excellent. The city is shown well from aerial views. The camera rotates 360 degrees, and the city streets are clearly visible. Manish Pradhan's editing is excellent, with a strong grip from start to finish and a fast pace. The film never bores the audience; they are constantly curious about what will happen next and glued to their seats throughout. Choreography: Ganesh Acharya is excellent in Param Sundari Song, and Vijay Ganguly is excellent in Rihaee de Song. Costume Design: Sheetal Sharma has designed the backdrop and costumes very well according to Rajasthani culture. Production Design: Subrata Chakraborty and Amit Ray did very well, and the sets of old houses are good. Baylon Fonseca's sound design is excellent, and the synchronization is flawless. A.R Rahman's music and background score require no introduction. He did an excellent job capturing the film's mood. Amitabh Bhattacharya, the lyricist, has written good songs for both Param Sundari and Rihaee De. Climax: It was very well made. Opinion: Jitni baar dekho, utni baar kam hain. It's very good; you'll want to watch it again and again. Message: Surrogacy is being promoted, which is incorrect. You can ignore the story because it is fictitious. Do not follow this in real life; a disclaimer included at the beginning. 67th Filmfare Award: This film received six nominations, including a National Award and a Filmfare Award. The film won two and three awards, respectively, for Best Actress, Best Supporting Actor, Best Supporting Actress, Best Editing, Best Music, Best Choreography (Param Sundari), and Best Female Playback Singer Shreya Ghoshal (Param Sundari), with Best Actress Kriti Sanon, Best Supporting Actor Pankaj Tripathi, and Best Supporting Actress Sai Tamhankar winning. Kriti Sanon (Alia Bhatt, Gangubhai Kathiawad) won Best Actress at the 69th National Award, Pankaj Tripathi won the Best Supporting Actor award. The cast includes Kriti Sanon, Pankaj Tripathi, Sai Tamhankar, Supriya Pathak, Manoj Pahwa, Evelyn Edwards, and Aidan Whytock. MAX Review: Kichcha Sudeep Shoulders High Octane Action Thriller- Telugu Funda
After a series of unimpressive movies, KIchcha Sudeep delivers a strong mass masala action thriller
Inspector Arjun Mahakshay goes with the name Max– the name no one barely calls him but recognised by only one of the many villains. Max comes with the track record of multiple suspensions and transfers due to his unabashed sincerely. The typical honest police officer role. However, MAX is not about Arjun. MAX is a one-night crime cover up thriller; an escaping drama from two powerful ministers and their men after the death of the minister’s son in the police station.
Writing strong villain characters and making the hero overcome the obstacles and dangers set by the villains is a perfect template for a mass masala action thriller that doesn’t treat its characters as just tools to elevate the heroism of the hero. But, MAX does use all the characters as tools for the sake of the hero. Sunil playing the gangster Guna is the main villain, Varalakshmi Sarathkumar as an insider cop working for Guna gets an interesting entry into the story with the hyped heftiness of a fox-like cunning cop. But, that doesn’t hold for long. We are made to believe that the villains are too powerful only through the shivering fears expressed by incompetent police officers. Vijay Kartikeyaa should have taken a bit more care to craft the intelligence of the characters rather than just telling the audience to believe that the politicians and gangsters are really powerful and dangerous.
MAX is not a flawless movie. It has its flaws, far too many from the standpoint of characterization. However, MAX works well because of Kichcha Sudeep’s heroic screen presence as an all-powerful big-brain strategic cop who never loses his cool unless he is talking on a phone call. The Lokesh Kangaraj’s Khaidi like plot-line of one-night actioner and goons of powerful men covering up the entire isolated police station gives MAX an immediate sense of tense urgency that keeps the audience hooked for the next moves. And, the positioning of the police station– designed by Shiva Kumar– in an isolated place is also a bit less convincing but it had to be that way for the plot to progress as Karthikeyaa had written it.
The heroic swagger of Kichcha Sudeep fired up by the background score of Kantara-fame Ajaneesh Loknath saves this underwritten escape thriller that engages you throughout the film.
TF Rating: 3/5

Vijay Sethupathi Maharaja Is The New Gem Of 2024
Initially, people thought it was just another run-of-the-mill South Indian film, predictable and boring. But as the story of Vijay Sethupathi Maharaja unfolded, it kept building and adding its own unique flavor, turning into something extraordinary. Trust me, this movie is an experience you don’t want to miss. Maharaja is the polar opposite of ‘Hi Nanna’ that I reviewed previously but packs a similar emotional punch.

Jailer (2023) Spoiler Review
If you like pure mass entertainment and a group of veteran actors kicking ass, you'll love Jailer.
I saw Rajni's Petta a while back and while I enjoyed some parts of it, I was largely frustrated towards the end. I also saw Nelson's (the director) Beast, and while it had a straightforward premise, some parts of it were eyebrow-raising (I still love the hallway shooting scene with Vijay, though, that was just hella cool even if it didn't make sense). So, when they announced a Nelson and Rajinikanth collaboration, I wasn't sure if I should bother watching.
I'm glad I watched it though. For one, the story isn't all over the place. The revenge angle and heist subplot made sense together.
The flashback revealing Rajini's days as a hard-core warden aka Jailer was pretty nice. I liked that his hair style looked like the one in his older movies. However, I really don't understand why the inmates liked him or became loyal to him. It was never showed what he did to make them turn over a new leaf. They just said he helped them, but we mainly saw him being extremely violent.
Okay, this is part where I reveal that I saw Jailer a day after I saw Jawan. I couldn't help comparing the action in both movies because the action in Jailer is so violent! I'm not complaining or cringing. I actually liked the over-the-top violence lmao. It's just that I was like "Oh, right, this is one of things I was waiting for in Jawan -- hyperviolence!" LMAO.
Anyway, I do love that the former inmates that helped him were veteran action stars from Kannada, Malayalam, and Hindi cinema: Shiva Rajkumar, Mohanlal and Jackie Shroff respectively. Bruh, I had goosebumps when Shiva R stepped into the house to protect Muthu's family while the Hukum song played!
Next, let's talk about the songs and bgm. "Hukum" really is such a banger of a song. And the style that they do, where they insert bits of the song's melody into cool scenes that build up and lead to the FULL SONG or at least CHORUS is such a great style because it makes you so hyped for the next badass scene!
Now, the family -- I honestly thought Rajni and Ramya Krishnan would have more romantic moments together since this is their reunion. Like, yes, they're grandparents now, but so what? It's always nice to see older people still doing romantic stuff with each other y'know.
Anyway, that twist with his son! I didn't expect them to go all the way with the betrayal but wow. It was really sad, but I liked that they went for that gut-wrenching story, too. Rajini is not much of a dramatic actor, but his performance was good for what the script called for. Also, his partnership with Yogi Babu was funny and nice. Also, those bald sharp-shooter guys! Their costume changes! That was so hilarious! And Varman's henchmen! The random funny characters and elements are really such a fun part of the mass experience.
All in all, Jailer is a really enjoyable movie for the whole family (if your kids are old enough to not be so desensitized to violence I guess).
