‘Indian 2’ Movie Review: Kamal Haasan and Shankar's Sequel Relies Heavily on Legacy and Future Promise
Tumblr media
A still from ‘Indian 2’ | Photo Credit: Special Arrangement
Introduction: An Underwhelming Sequel Despite the barrage of ideas that usually work wonders in Shankar's films, most of them fall flat in Kamal Haasan-led Indian 2. The sequel relies heavily on its past legacy and future promise, stretching the plot to prepare for the upcoming Indian 3.
The Legacy of Shankar and ‘Indian’ Director Shankar's debut with the Robin Hood-esque Gentleman and the complex political backdrop of his sophomore film Kadhalan set the stage for his third film, Indian. The original film’s poignant backstory and the emotional turmoil of its titular hero, a former freedom fighter turned vigilante, resonated deeply with audiences. Unfortunately, these crucial elements are notably absent in Indian 2.
Plot Overview: A Disengaging Return Senapathy (Kamal Haasan), who ended Indian in Hong Kong, is now in Taiwan, the land where his idol Subhas Chandra Bose died. A group of disillusioned YouTubers trending #ComeBackIndian on social media prompts the veteran to return to his homeland. However, instead of the expected vigilante justice, Senapathy encourages the youth to address corruption starting within their own homes.
A Shallow Exploration of Corruption The most significant takeaway from Indian 2 is its attempt to highlight the personal consequences of fighting corruption. Lives are lost, and families are broken, touching on the aftermath of being morally upright. Yet, this idea barely scratches the surface, lacking the depth and emotional impact of the original.
Recycled Elements and Problematic Tropes Indian 2 revisits familiar templates from Shankar's previous films: grand sets, exotic locales, and elaborate action scenes. However, it also revives outdated and problematic tropes. The film includes an unnecessary scene where Senapathy uses varma kalai to make a womaniser act effeminate, echoing the cringeworthy portrayal of a trans makeup artist in I. Additionally, stereotypes from Mudhalvan reappear, now targeting internet users with bright-coloured hair.
Missed Opportunities for Deeper Commentary The film's depiction of an unskilled doctor operating from a patient's back and equating minor corruption with major crimes reflects a skewed perspective. It strays from addressing pressing issues like the NEET fiasco affecting medical professionals. Shankar’s authoritative and idealistic solutions fail to delve into grassroots-level causes, adding to Indian 2's shortcomings.
A Nationwide Battle Against Corruption Unlike its predecessor, Indian 2 takes the fight against corruption nationwide. The film replaces standard health warnings with “Corruption causes cancer to the nation” and introduces villains from various states involved in different scams. However, the punishments meted out to them lack the cathartic impact of those in the original film.
Unconvincing Characters and Artificial Plot Devices Apart from Kamal Haasan, Siddharth and his gang, played by Priya Bhavani Shankar, Jagan, and Rishikanth, receive significant screen time. However, their struggles lack the emotional weight of the original characters. The reliance on trending hashtags like #ComeBackIndian and #GoBackIndian to drive the plot feels extremely artificial.
A Lackluster Plot and Altered Characters The grandeur of Shankar’s vision collapses without a sturdy plot. The character of Senapathy, once an old, hunched man with stealthy abilities, is now seen performing implausible stunts. The visually stunning ‘Calendar Song’ and other musical numbers add no value to the film, and the fight sequences feel forced and unoriginal.
Disappointing Antagonists and Weak Dialogue The brilliant Krishnaswamy (Nedumudi Venu) from the original film is replaced by his son Pramod (Bobby Simha), a typical Tamil film cop used to highlight nepotism. SJ Suryah, presumed to be the main antagonist in the next sequel, appears briefly, along with other veteran actors like Brahmanandam. The dialogues fail to impress, with lines like “idhu karumam illa, varumam” and “soththu kaga oduna nee ippo death kaga odu” falling flat.
Anirudh’s Music and Nostalgic References Anirudh’s score reuses much of AR Rahman’s original music, which works brilliantly and provides some of the film's best moments. The film includes numerous references to Shankar and Kamal’s previous works, including a homage to Goundamani and Senthil.
Conclusion: Hopes for ‘Indian 3’ Despite a plethora of ideas, Indian 2 struggles to remain relevant and entertaining. The teaser for Indian 3 delivers more intrigue in its brief runtime than the entire 180-minute film. While Indian 2 banks on the nostalgic value of its predecessor, there is hope that Indian 3 will mark a true comeback for the veteran filmmaker and the legendary actor.

Salaar - Movie Review
Tumblr media
Prashant Neel after the successful blockbuster KGF series joined hands with Prabhas for the much anticipated Salaar. Prabhas hasn’t tasted success after Bahubali franchise, major part due to teaming up with inexperienced and non-mass movie directors. This is his 1st proper combination after Rajamouli.
Story :- Vardha (Prithviraj), son of Raja Mannar (Jagapathi Babu) and Deva (Prabhas) are good friends who live in Khansar. Deva is very protective about Vardha and is ready to do anything for his safety. Once Deva and his mother were attacked and Vardha saves them and helps them leave Khansaar. Owing to the same, Deva assures whenever Vardha needs him, he will be there. After few years, Vardha needs the help of Deva and he calls him back to Khansar. Did Deva protect Vardha? What did he do in Khansar? Why did Deva lives in exile after that instance? Forms rest of the story.
Performances :- Prabhas steals the show in action blocks. He’s macho, fierce and calm at the same time. First half he’s controlled by his mother and second half by his friend. But in both cases, once he’s unleashed, there’s no stopping. Prithviraj as his best friend looks apt. We can feel his helplessness, pain and aspiration. He gets to show his action prowess in the last fight and he shines well. Eswari Rao as Prabhas mother has a lengthy role. Though the character pain is understandable, it feels monotonous and lag at few instances. Shruthi Haasan is okay in 1st half. Her role in 2nd half is just like Malavikain KGF, just to narrate/listen to the story. Jagapathi Babu, Bobby Simha, Shriya Reddy, Jhansi, etc have limited scope and they are fine.
Technicians :- Ravi Basrur didn’t live up to the expectations of KGF both in terms of music and background score. Scenes would have been elevated to next level, had the BG was in the range of Dheera Dheera. Movie’s strength is its action episodes. Anbariv did a terrific job with the fights and gave some of the best heroic moments. Prashant Neel used similar screenplay as done for KGF. Arriving at one scene from multiple dimensions and characters. In Salaar, he narrates the story completely backwards, revealing the after effects upfront and showing the reasons that caused it in later part. We may find many similarities between KGF and Salaar, mother sentiment, multiple villains (similar get ups), a tribe of oppressed, etc. Though the action part and elevation scenes work well, the drama is a bit let down with not so emotionally connecting scenes and repetitive actions. Few noteworthy moments are engine ignition sounds when Prabhas controls his anger in 1st half, Prithviraj looking at Prabhas shadow and seeing whether he is in control or about to freak out in action episode of 2nd half. Prashant has created a big canvas with a long history, a place in the map, multiple tribes and their generations, internal rift, power games, etc and amidst all this a warrior on lose who can go to any extent for his friend. He has lot of scope for the 2nd part to play with and the climax sets up the platform perfectly for 2nd part.
Positives :-
Action episodes
Story and set up
Prabhas
Negatives :-
Slow drama
Underwhelming background score and songs
Summary :- Worth watching for the action episodes and elevation scenes. Not on par with KGF 1, but far better than all Prabhas movies after Bahubali.
Rating :- 3/5 (Keep expectations in check, you will like it)

1. Prashanth Neel's Cinematic Evolution
You know Prashanth Neel from "KGF," right? Well, he's back with "Salaar," and boy, has he grown! The storytelling is on point, characters are well-defined, and the whole vibe is just more polished. Neel takes us on a journey from epic dramas to the contemporary world, and it works like magic.
2. Friendship, Action, and a Dash of Romance
"Salaar" kicks off with a classic tale of friendship between two boys, Varadha and Deva. The setting is Khansar, a place dripping in legend. Fast forward to the present, and Deva (played by Prabhas) is a quiet mechanic in Assam. The story unfolds, connecting past and present in a non-linear way that keeps you hooked. Dunki Movie Review: Fans Declare Dunki Better Than Pathaan and Jawan!
3. Prabhas in Full Power Mode
Minimal dialogues, maximum impact – that's Prabhas in "Salaar." His screen presence is towering, and when he flexes those muscles, you believe it! The action sequences are top-notch, and Prabhas handles them with ease. 5. Action, Drama, and Contextualized Violence
Get ready for a visual feast of violence and bloodshed, but hold on – it's all in context. The succession battle in Khansar is intense, with flying limbs and decapitated bodies, but it doesn't feel unnecessary. Thank the movie gods for that 'A' certificate!
6. Prashanth Neel's Khansar: A Dark, Political Wonderland
Neel creates Khansar with intricate details, resembling a mix of tradition and rebellion. The city boasts 101 tribes, divided into clans and councils, adding layers to the political drama. The dark color palette and anthems sung by school kids amp up the intensity.
7. The Prabhas Comeback and International Flair
For Prabhas fans, this is the comeback we've been waiting for. His electrifying performance as Salaar strikes a balance between aggression and emotional depth. Neel's touch of international cinema is evident, steering away from typical dance numbers and melodies.
8. Public Reviews and Box Office Buzz
Public reviews hail "Salaar" as a commendable action drama, with Neel skillfully navigating the dynamics of friendship. Despite occasional pacing issues, the film earns a solid 3.25 rating. Fans praise the incredible action, background music, and Prabhas's comeback, even comparing it to the likes of "Game of Thrones."
Conclusion: A Cinematic Marvel Worth the Watch
In a nutshell, "Salaar" is a grand game of master chess, played in a brutal way. Prashanth Neel's storytelling brilliance, technical prowess, and Prabhas's powerhouse performance make it a must-watch. Kamal Haasan's Indian 2 Shoot Stopped Midway At Chennai Airport For This Reason
Kamal Haasan starrer Indian 2 was being filmed at the Chennai airport. According to reports, the filming was stopped midway by the airport administration.
Kamal Haasan's Indian 2 is in its last leg of filming. The movie has been in production for more than four years now but is still one of the most anticipated films. The team was recently shooting for some scenes at the Chennai airport. According to reports, the filming was stopped midway by the airport administration.
The Newsmakers
Shankar’s directorial Indian 2 was announced back in September 2017. Principal photography for the film began in January 2019. It has since been shot in various locations including Chennai, Rajahmundry, Bhopal, Kyoto, South Africa and many places in India and abroad. Following an accident on the sets involving a crane in February 2020 that resulted in the deaths of a few crew members, filming was stopped.
Since then, production has been getting delayed due to a variety of reasons, including the COVID-19 pandemic, cost overruns and legal issues, until picking up again in August 2022. Now, the production has taken another hit. As per reports, the cast and crew were stopped from filming at the Chennai airport.
Who’s saying what
Reportedly, Indian 2 filming was taking place at the airport's departure area and permission was granted only for certain scenes that required to use the particular location. However, the film unit intended to shoot a scene at the airport bathroom area, for which permission was not obtained. The officials acted swiftly and shooting was halted. Since then, production sources have clarified that filming of Indian 2 is proceeding with all the necessary clearances. Reportedly, the team is paying the airport administration Rs 1.24 crore for shoot permission.
The makers plan to release Indian 2 on Pongal 2024. It is expected to be the costliest film in Kamal Haasan's career by far, given its scale. The movie is the follow-up to the 1996 hit Indian, in which Kamal Haasan played both the son and his father, with the latter dying in the film's climactic scene. Along with the late actors Vivek, Nedumudi Venu and Manobala, the star cast also features Kajal Aggarwal, Rakul Preet Singh, Bobby Simha, Samuthirakani, Guru Somasundaram, Priya Bhavani Shankar and others.
