Reflecting on the story of Unslaad tonight and I just find it so interesting that both overarching antagonists of the Vicn Trilogy, Molag Bal and Hermaeus Mora, and by extension Hoholaugh and the Black Owls in regards to the latter, each manage to be so horrifyingly villainous while also being the most pathetic characters in the whole story. Each of them is desperately attempting to force you to give them what they need to escape their own destruction, trying with everything in their power to beat you into submission with the worst horrors imaginable, only for them to be practically crawling and clinging onto your ankle while desperately pleading for you to stop and help them by the end. Each seems like an impossible foe at the darkest moments of the story, but when you look back after it's all over you can see just how pitiful they always were.
"Laugh at such matters, Dragonborn. For the Prisoner holds the reins of fate in their hands."
I also think of it as a nice callback to Vigilant that you can defeat Hoholaugh by offering him forgiveness, but with a very different outcome compared to the souls you grant peace in that story, and honestly I think it's the most damning option of all for him. He looks out upon the world and the understanding of what he's done, how he's been used, and all that he was never and will never be able to be part of hits him all at once. That's the key thing, too. I think Hoholaugh doesn't just know in this moment, he understands. Molag Bal will never understand, and neither will Hermaeus Mora. The Prince of Fate is too stuck with his head buried in all his stolen words and, even moreso, his own fear to have any capacity to look at the world and truly comprehend the magnificence of it all. But in the moment after he's freed, Hoholaugh understands, and it destroys him.
"The more I think about it, the more I feel... I could have been a part of this world if only my Lord Herma-Mora participated in its creation..."
The greatest revenge you can have against the Black Owl is to take none at all, and I think there's something brilliant to that.

It’s such a sad and cruel story. Shouldn’t the ending be inspiring, And full of happiness?

So I’m playing through Vigilant for the first time and I have so many thoughts. I stayed up till like 3 playing it last night and I’m currently at work on a break so I’ll give a small summary of my thoughts.
Spoilers for Vigilant ( Skyrim mod )
Keep in mind I’ve only gotten through Act 3 and I’m at the beginning of act 4 barely even started because I told myself I had to go to bed last night. I’m not gonna break every act down into massive paragraphs I just want to summarize my thoughts on a first play.
ALSO keep in mind I’m playing alongside with Gore and Auri as they both have Vigilant commentary!
First and foremost Vigilant is fucking incredible.
Besides maybe the first couple of quests in act 1 the writing is impeccable. Not that those first quests are bad but they aren’t great. It’s a bit jumpy and mostly a “go here do this kill this thing okay move on.”
So act 1 in the beginning eh.
BUT BITCH
The end of act 1 is FUCKIN CRAZY.
As someone who adores and loves the dark souls series the feeling this mod gave me was almost exact to how the trilogy of souls games made me feel. For a Skyrim mod that’s fuckin insane.
Granted I am running lots of combat mods so things are more fluid then they may usually be, I would say some combat mods are necessary. Like a dodge mod and maybe some animations. Vanilla combat would make this experience pretty lack luster in my opinion. The bosses themselves are incredibly well made. Down to the design, the music, the arenas. Again it gave me the feeling of a souls like!
AND GIRL I HAVENT EVEN FINISHED THE MOD!
There are some triggering themes. Please keep this in mind if you are also considering playing vigilant. It through me for a loop when playing it and I had a little cry sesh after. I do think they are handle in a subtle and respectful way however. Take care of yourself first 🩷
Not to even mention the MASTERPIECE that is GoreDevs work on Gores commentary for this quest line. It is beyond phenomenal! The work he put in is truly incredible and getting to act 4 with Gore was a wild ride not only because ya know vigilant but also GORE!
Overall I’m loving vigilant and I’ll give my full and final thoughts when I finish it. As I’m writing this I am now back home and about to hop back in! Yippie!!!!

The overwhelming desire to reinstall Skyrim so I can replay Vigilant again and experience some of the added options that people won't film on youtube for some reason VS the soul-crushing fear of installing mods to improve my experience only for the game to suddenly brick itself before I even get close to where I want to be at when I decide to start the mod

Vigilant is great, but I wish it didn't break radiant quests just by being installed lol

Yes, this mod has haunted me for like five years now. I think I seriously have to play it again and start journaling my thoughts as I do. Maybe make a story chart so I can really put together every little detail in the continuity.
The horror is unlike anything I’ve experienced before. But then there’s the incredible part at the end of it all if you manage to do things right, overcoming every terrible moment that came before. It’s bliss. I will never stop thinking about this mod. The greatest gaming experience I’ve had to date even after everything I’ve played since.
Agh, and then there’s Unslaad and Glenmoril too. If I have to wait another damn year for the latter to be complete I will absolutely do it.
I randomly started thinking about that Skyrim mod, VIGILANT...
That mod made me feel so much. It took all this obscure but really fascinating Elder Scrolls lore and made it so epic and cinematic. It was better than most game expansions out there and I got to play it for free? Vicn is a god.
It was similar to Dark Souls but like, way more digestible and easy to get into, without all the things that can make Dark Souls a chore. Wish I could play it for the first time all over again.

I know the signs are already showing, but here’s a direct advance warning to the people that if I start speaking in strange verses and gazing into the void more than usual it’s because Vigilant has me in its grasp again. Beware that I could start playing Skyrim again at any moment within the next month and when I get to that quest you will KNOW.
(Kyne waits beyond the foaming darkness on the other side.)

I've come back to Skyrim recently, and finaly got around to play Vigilant ! And I must admit it's a cool mod, not without flaws (people on ytb definetly oversold it to me), but after playing act 1 and 2, I can say it's pretty solid :)
Only problem...

My dragonborn is a conjurer/necromancer, and...

He's gay af. This mod is very edgy and tragic, but damn am I not playing the right character for it- (but hey at least I'm having fun)
