/its always tumblr, ITS ALWAYS FUCKING TUMBLR when i search IN MY OWN LANGUAGE on literally any other site, people got stumped. Bác? Too old. Bạn? Too casual/disrespectful. people jest, like lets call them Mày (which is even More casual/disrespectful than Bạn, and most NBs are young, so there is no generation After them yet for them to consider a Older-Casual pronoun)
chanh? 10/10. lets call them limes its so perfect (Limes, because while Chanh can be translated to lemons, they arent the first thing people think off. Also lemons arent naturally grown here and are very expensive lol, Ive never tasted a natural lemon)
I am writing a story where one of the main characters is vietnamese-american and nonbinary. I myself am nonbinary, but I'm not asian and I know there are some western tropes around portraying asian characters as "genderless" (like robots etc). This character has a love interest but I also don't want any expressions of gender neutrality to be misconstrued as "desexualized" (as I believe that is another trope). What is some advice on how to make these aspects of my character work well without being disrespectful?
Nonbinary Vietnamese character, worried about (neutral = de-sexualized) tropes
A note that Vietnam is part of Southeast Asia, not East Asia!
Obviously there are multiethnic Vietnamese people such as myself that are East and Southeast Asian, and Vietnamese people of East Asian (ethnic) origin - but Vietnam’s considered a Southeast Asian nation (here’s a link to the ASEAN’s page on Vietnam).
Speaking as a nonbinary Vietnamese person, I’d say go for it! I personally know many other Vietnamese nonbinary people, so the identity is definitely a sizable population of the queer Viet diaspora.
Clearly you’ve done research on dehumanizing tropes of characters of color, so I would just recommend scrolling through our “nonbinary” and “Vietnamese” tags.
If you want some resources from LGBT Viets specifically, I’d recommend checking out Viet Rainbow of Orange County, an organization founded by LGBT Vietnamese people based in Little Saigon.
[Content Warning for mentions of suicide and mental health issues]
According to the Trevor Project, many young queer Vietnamese-Americans struggle with mental health issues with as high as 60% LGBT Vietnamese youth not being “out” to their parents, and 31% contemplating suicide. I would tread carefully if this is a topic you plan on addressing in your story.
Something interesting I’ve stumbled across with regards to the nonbinary Vietnamese identity: according to the Asian American Writers Workshop, some people use “chanh” as a pronoun (combining the words for sister and brother). I personally don’t speak Vietnamese, but thought this was pretty neat!
Nonbinary Vietnamese readers, feel free to contribute any thoughts you have.

Upcoming project...
🌜🎙️ || One Last Encore
😳🙏 ...so. I got lost in the sauce and been whittling away at this story. I'm going to take it super easy, as this project isn't a huge priority to me, but something is in the works! To the best of my ability, the most fitting format for this tale is through fan-animatics of songs. If you like singing monsters, emotionally constipated gays, and hella Vietnamese Bolero, this could be interesting for you! Details:
Type: Animatic series
Scope: Shhh...
Current Progress: Shhh...
Release: Shhh...
If you'd like to support me, I have a Ko-Fi linked in my bio. No memberships right now, so it's a tip jar. But no real need to, as I'll give updates on my socials! Thanks for reading~ <3

Favorite Movies 2024
I do one of these every year, even though I see less and less of the current releases every year. But, I've been doing it on tumblr since 2012, so it's a tradition and everyone else does it so, why not?
There's a lot of movies I haven't gotten to see yet. Like, as far as I can tell Queer isn't available anywhere even though it's one of those movies I'm sure I'd love. Everyone seems to like The Brutalist, but I don't want to watch a bad cam recording. I don't usually see most non-American movies until the next year. Really excited to see that movie Viet and Nam.
That said, some honorable mentions:
Past Lives was a really beautiful film about a family immigrating to the USA from South Korea and how that affects their daughter and her friend's relationship, not to mention her identity. It's 5/5 for me but it's technically 2023 and it feels more fun to highlight the films I chose.
Perfect Days is a Japanese movie about a guy that works for a toilet cleaning company and it's really a beautiful movie. Like the previous mention the only problem is it's from 2023 and I think it'd be fun to highlight the films I chose.
Conclave is fun! Who would have thought picking the pope was exactly like high school cafeteria drama!
I'm sure no one cares for Speak No Evil, considering this one is an American remake. But, personally I had a lot of fun, James McAvoy is hot and honestly the family deserved it for diving a Tesla.
Drive Away Dolls is a really funny gay comedy. It's not good enough to make a "best of" list, but that doesn't mean it's not worth a watch. In that same respect, Bottoms was really funny. But again, not best of the year worthy, and it's from 2023.
Anyways! The list!
10 - Heretic

Heretic is one of those edgy pseudo intellectual movies that thinks it's so much smarter than it actually is. And I love it. Do not go into this expecting a horror movie, expect it to be some dude trolling some Mormon girls. Don't take it seriously and just enjoy the ride. It's funnier than it is scary. When the guy compares the Book of Mormon to Monopoly, or compares Jesus Christ to Jar Jar Binks? Hysterical.
9 - Alien: Romulus

I don't really have anything to add on to the letterboxd review. As a Alien lover, a Xenomorph fucker, and a die hard fan of the series, I really loved the atmosphere in this one. The world building was great. I'm happy we finally got a decent installment, finally.
8 - Challengers

Again, said most of what I need to up there. Challengers is not the movie you expect it to be. Funny as hell, interesting as hell, melodramatic as fuck.
7 - Will & Harper
Will & Harper is a breath of fresh air in today's transphobic climate. I didn't expect Will fucking Ferrel to be the trans ally of the year, but damn, he tried his hardest to keep Harper happy even in the darker moments. Will Ferrell's best movie (lol).
6 - Love Lies Bleeding

This fucking movie is insane. If you want to see a real lesbian crime thriller, this is it y'all. Music is excellent, acting is astounding, and they throw in some fucking curveballs to fuck with you. Underrated cinema.
5 - Monkey Man

Do you need another reason?
An amazing action flick in a similar vein to John Wick. Brutal, violent, but has so much heart. And we get amazing trans representation. This film looked beautiful, I'd argue only one other film had a visual aesthetic nearly as cool as this in 2024 (it'll come up later). Dev Patel wrote, directed, and starred in this, that's insane. He clearly had so much love for this project and it shows through.
4 - Look Back
I don't usually put anime movies on this list, but I don't know if I'll do an anime list this year so it has to be included.
From the creator of Chainsaw Man, we get a beautiful movie about friendship and loss. It's genuinely a beautiful piece of art.
3 - Femme

I'm not adding my letterboxd, it has spoilers in it and I don't want to ruin the ride. Technically a 2023 movie, but it's on John Waters favorite movie list of the year so it fucking counts.
A brutal look at internalized homophobia and the ways we hurt each other in our own communities. I can't recommend it enough, but trigger warnings for homophobia, assault, and abuse. It's really hard to get into the meat and potatoes of this movie without spoiling it. But, it's fucked up and well made.
I loved this movie. It looks so beautiful, the actors inhabit their characters so well it feels like it's all real, a gay horror movie if I've ever seen one.
2 - The People's Joker

Also technically not 2024, but this is the year everyone got to see it. But, The People's Joker is such a triumph of trans DIY bullshit. Making a movie about a trans woman Joker without the permission of DC sounds so stupid, but it comes together as one of the most interesting pieces of art to come out in the 2020s.
My first experience with this movie was unforgettable. I had no idea it existed, but my girlfriend who worked at a movie theater was like "this movie exists let's go see it!" And I was like, ok that's chill. I was hitting the weed vape so hard before going into this and killed me.
Live action, CGI, animation, this movie is a bizarre amalgamation of styles, built as this weird, indie love letter to Batman. Inside this shell of mixed artforms you find a very basic story about a trans woman finding herself and fighting for the respect of the people around her. And beyond that you can find comedy revolving around Batman lore or comedy revolving around inter community bullshit.
Outstanding movie. Would happily watch it 800 more times.
1 - I Saw The TV Glow

It couldn't be anything else.
Similar to previous, my movie theater girlfriend got a huge group of people together to go see this. I had seen trailers but I figured it was going to be a normal horror movie in the style of Candle Cove type shenanigans. I was very, very, very, very high when I saw this. Of the 15 or so people (all trans) that saw this, the majority were crying, a few were shell shocked and just left, and I'm there laughing about Phoebe Bridgers in the middle.
I don't think there's anything I can say about this movie that isn't already super well known. A transgender horror story with the message "it's never too late." As frightening, as sad as it is, it's also just the beginning of the story that'll have a happy end.
It's beautiful. Looks beautiful. Great soundtrack that fits the vibe. One of the best movies ever made, honestly.

this is moreso just going to be talking about being queer & viet as a whole than just carogender — we'll get to it when we get to it.
so, as most people here in mogaiblr know, i grew up vietnamese. i'm a second generation immigrant; my parents (especially my mom) and my extended family don't speak a lot of english, i grew up taking part in more vietnamese traditions than american, i didn't watch the same childhood movies most people did, and i didn't eat a lot of american food outside of what i ate at school. i did eat my own weird amalgamations — those were more of an "autism picky eater" thing than being viet, though.
it was honestly a really difficult experience growing up visibly not white in america. my parents insisted on moving to good / safe neighborhoods — which i am eternally grateful for — but it also meant i was mostly surrounded with white kids. i rejected my culture for a really long time under the idea that because i was visibly asian (darker than other kids, "chink" eyes, ugly language, etc.) that i was ugly. i was in kindergarten thinking this! do you know how sad that is? i was 6.
either way, it was a really long journey growing to embrace myself & my culture. it's a much more recent development that i've realized how much being vietnamese connects to my gender identity and queerness as a whole, but i've been trying to reconnect with my culture for years; it's a difficult process. this is especially true when your parents both don't like vietnam or thinking about it. but, our culture impacts who we are as people & how we interact with everyone in our lives.
now, getting into the terms i made: this was a doozy. queerness in vietnamese culture is generally looked down upon — especially within your own family unit. i've seen it best described as "you're open to be queer with anyone except your own family." i can attest to this, if only because the only word i've ever heard in my life to mean "gay" or "queer" in vietnamese is bê đê, which is 1.) derived from a derogatory term in french to refer to gay people meaning 'pedo' and 2.) considered a slur — the exact equivalent is iffy, but i'd say it's like the f slur (in spite of google translate insisting otherwise). so, basically, finding other queer people in the viet community is difficult and finding queer terms in vietnamese (largely reserved "communist" country) is even more difficult. anyways, here's the carogender blurb :3
carogender: this one is super personal to us. caro is essentially vietnamese tic-tac-toe — as mentioned above — though, googling it, apparently it's also similar to the japanese game "gomoku"? i wouldn't know; my dad was the one that showed me the game, and we play it really often. the both of us even have apps on our phones that we just randomly pull up to challenge eachother to caro matches! i think most people use the board for "go!" as a caro board, because caro doesn't have an "official" board you can play on. but, the game just means a lot to us & was the most connected we'd felt to our culture in a really long time — playing it with our dad, our family members & showing it to our friends.

finally finished the profile for the danseiroido!! this took way too long just because drawing anime headshot is my biggest nightmare... and then ended up not even looking That anime LOL... i've already had a few comics up in the tag (search em to read!) but. a brief intro is that i basically just made them idols (somewhat) and threw them in the same boygroup to write sitcom/4-koma slice of life random jokes, as i always do! they also share the same universe with my entire vocaloid neighborhood setup (but this will - might - be for another day)
there isnt a deep overarching plot as for now, its just daily lives of a boygroup that doesnt really do anything idol-like and occasionally featuring others around them from the vocal synth ville. oh and idk if i can call them a polycule because they dont really think or operate that way But! i do want all of them to fool around and have their own "ship moment" (if you want to call it that? i dont really label these things and i want to write it that way) tldr they all fuck one another. every single ship in the group canon (EXCEPT the obvious anyone x len. timeout for him he got his ass kicked out whenever they do it...)
my concept/idea for it (not much tbh this is just me rediscovering my love for vocaloid - though one can argue it never went away - and started make up random shits for them so its pretty much spontaneous and not a serious project or anything) is a parody of sort on stereotypical otome/bl genres and boygroups and anime tropes and obviously the vocaloid fandom/history. but i dont think i know enough about bl nor anime nor boygroups so at the end of the day its just guys hanging out XD hm i should just tag my other vocaloid stuff something else too considering its an elaborated world now, with these guys in it, but... that... really is for another day...
wait forgot to say also making len the leader is idk vocaloid meta funny or sth since hes the most popular but here hes just a wee child not even allowed to getting involved much (to be fair its cause most of the involvement are either freakish or sexual. or both) hes already more than involved in the irl success go away little boy. but Boom! funny ass kid leading army of 6 gay ass men (one of them isnt even a man. but only when its convenient) (sometimes there are 7 of them)
also: everyone learn vietnamese to understand how funny their viet names are rn
SORRY I KEEP EDITING. but they also have a playlist... just for funsies. some of them are serious canon lore related the rest are probably all shitposts

Is this the first time a Viet fandom actually made it onto the dashboard? (Look ma, we’re famous!)
Does the dashboard like break when it sees the Viet characters? (It’s hilarious seeing Anh trai vượt ngàn chông gai written as Anh Trai Vt Ngn Chng Gai)
Ahhh I can definitely see why that would look ridiculous - everyone who can read Vietnamese has my sincerest apologies haha. But the short answer is yes it does.
It was a while ago now, but when I was first writing the code for the web scraper that pulls in the data that powers the dashboard, I kept running into errors related to non-English/Latin characters. I tried a couple of fixes I found online, but nothing was working and I still had a lot of work to do, so I ended up just having it skip the characters.
This was most commonly seen with Chinese characters, so the entire Chinese name would be skipped, which is why you'll see Fandom names that start with "|" sometimes, as those are used to separate the original Chinese name and then the English name. This didn't seem too much of an issue, since I assumed most people consuming my dashboard/posts could at least identify their fave fandom names in English (although I did make a note of it at the bottom of the dashboard with an apology).
It does seem to produce an even weirder effect with Vietnamese though, since it shares some characters with the Latin alphabet. I would love to say I will try again to fix it soon, but more realistically, I will say I hope to fix it someday.
I'm currently absolutely drowning in work, plus spending my free time automating a bunch of stuff for my mom's small business (because she's drowning trying to run a business while taking care of her elderly parents), plus dealing with a crazy landlord who is threatening to evict me every 5 minutes (on completely baseless grounds) requiring me to moonlight as my own legal counsel.
So I promise I'm not xenophobic, just crazy busy! Hopefully everyone who sees the weird names can see the humor in the situation and it doesn't dull their enjoyment of the dashboard or the weekly posts too much!
