Grace Kelly*: From Style Icon To Royal Bride

Okay so actually there are two books about Grace Kelly’s wardrobe and impact on fashion, both written by the same person: H. Kristina Haugland. One is called Grace Kelly Style, written for the Victoria and Albert Museum’s 2010 exhibit “Grace Kelly: Style Icon”. It’s focused on her fashion evolution based on her life stages.

The second book, Grace Kelly: Icon of Style to Royal Bride, provides insight to the titular wedding outfit, starting with the background and lead-up, then going in-depth into the construction and transport. There’s even a diagram of how the dress was made at the back.

So, the reason I read both books is because I could not figure out what “rose point” lace** meant. I rarely to never see that referenced in lace books, and I double checked the indices of several books I own to make sure. I thought it was a familiar term I might have heard elsewhere in that (and don’t get upset at me here) the UK and US often just… make up new names for things…? Things that already had names? So I was chasing down this term in 20th century US sources and it made no sense. Some sources said it’s Italian and some sources said Belgian. I’m pretty certain everyone was just a tad confused.

And that extended to Grace Kelly’s wedding dress. Everyone agreed the lace was needlemade, most that the MGM dressmakers had reembroidered it***, and several sources repeated it was a hundred and twenty five years old when she wore it and basically I needed a professional.

Luckily!!! Someone cited this book!

And Haugland acknowledges it’s confusing!!!

So, “rose point lace” is actually an American name for point de gaze, a lace I am intimately familiar with.

She also calls out MGM for saying the lace was 125 years old. Point de gaze didn’t debut commercially until the mid-1800s, and that includes the 3D elements and the famous rose patterns (I have read documents related to this but I don’t want to dig them out because it’s really mundane “the queen of such-and-such, so-and-so is coming to support us” letters—they really wanted to impress).

And I’m pretty sure I know where the initial confusion because of a book Haugland herself cites. Unfortunately, it doesn’t solve my confusion. So.

In Icon of Style to Royal Bride, Haugland quotes Marian Powys’s Lace and Lace-Making****. I, of course, immediately read that too. It is the lace book of the mid-20th century. In it, she writes on rose point lace (point de gaze to me) and then… point de venise a rose, which I have seen shortened as ‘point de rose’ (and had not the faintest clue what they could possibly be talking about). Obviously, confusing, and probably why some sources reported the lace as Italian.

But this does not answer my question! Because Powys also describes both Belgium and Italy as copying the popular old point de gaze patterns and selling them. And given MGM likely sourced the lace through dealers while knowing very little about handmade lace, who knows.

However.

However, in Style Icon to Royal Bride, an anecdote given about Grace Kelly’s shoes (decorated with the same lace [sort of]) does lead me to believe the lace was likely antique—or at least, old.

So, after reading three (3) books(!!!), I have to satisfy myself that the lace was probably(?) Belgian and probably(?) antique. But I do know more about the history of garment conservation and exhibition now, so that’s pretty cool regardless. I also really liked the insights into the design process, the timeline, and the construction of the dress.

Would definitely recommend if you like knowing semi-obscure trivia, Hollywood celebrities, have ever wanted to copy Grace Kelly’s wedding dress, fancy dresses or falling down rabbit holes.

P.S. I looked into this to try and find out if there really was priceless lace floating around Old Hollywood. It definitely needs more research but initial conclusions are ‘not likely.’ The reason Grace Kelly was gifted such an over-the-top sensational dress is she was becoming a princess while still under contract with MGM—imagine the publicity if they could convince a royal to come back to movie making. It definitely did pop up occasionally but it seems like it was more an East Coast socialite thing—for example, Jacqueline Lee Bouvier wore her grandmother’s antique point de gaze veil (sometimes provenance is certainty) in her wedding to future President Kennedy.

**needle lace is an entirely handmade fabric that involves stitching buttonholes into patterns. It’s also called point lace, needlepoint lace, etc—primarily to separate it from bobbin lace, which similarly is a completely handmade fabric woven via braiding, and other types of knotted needle laces, which are generally significantly more hardy.

The desirability of needle lace is usually its delicate, gauzy appearance.

***while needlerun lace (hand embroidery over machinemade lace to make it look closer to handmade) was fairly common at the time, being able to convincingly embroider or make needle lace was almost as big a deal in the 20th century as it is now. Especially by a major movie studio like MGM. What the embroiderers did, according to the book, is disassemble the lace, fit it to the patterns, and sew it on another fabric backing—where it was reassembled to cover the seams. Which is much, much easier than the reports (if anyone asks I will explain why).

****Powys’s 1953 book on the subject of lace defined many terms I see used in literature about lace that I never see lacemakers themselves use. And her glossary is in the front!!! And she gives her process to making needle lace in the back!!! I include this because there’s a general misconception that books on lace (needle lace especially) only exist up to 1905 or so, with a smattering published in the 1980s. However, I’ve tracked down needle lace books from the late 19th century to the present. You need to know what you’re looking for.

Additionally, reading Powys is when I realized Grace Kelly’s civil ceremony dress was “needlerun”—I was having a hard time squaring it with methods of manufacturing.

Sure! It's nothing too exciting I guess, but my Dueser origins begin as a wee girl. I know my family must have vaguely watched it because I remember the image of All The Queen's Horses mountie chase pre-dates my series watch beginnings. I know my grandma later confessed as I had it on tv one summer that she watched it. Cause cute Benton Fraser lol.

But real seeing and watch began with a random catch of Free Willie one morning on the Showcase Network. Thank you kindly Showcase.

Yeah, I caught it one morning and stayed to watch because I think I vaguely recognized it, and just fell in love with it's charm and wit and Fraser and Ray. It was the first episode so great timing too. And they had it schedule set to air one episode in the morning, the same at night, five days a week. Perfect for catching up.

Promos were hilarious too. I should see if any are online.

Oh, and it was original edit, so it had extra scenes like the different Victoria's Secret ones.

So I caught up on the series quick. Also, what I think really cemented my season 1 and 2 love was they played that set for months at least before switching to the 3/4 season. That highlighted the difference in tone to my POV too I think, and it's why I kinda view them apart still.

But I really got to experience show first this way.

I think I found fandom when starting Livejournal same time the show hit resurgence there. And I happily caught the tail end of Yahoo Groups so got to back read fan stuff there. Missed most of Ray Wars. Yay. There was the 2000's snippets, but everyone was so fun at content creation and love, that was the best take-aways. It made for a great time. I participated in a watch-along! A big highlight of fannishness for me! That's when I saw The Pilot. Or my fav was squeeing about Pizza and Promises.

Just, some of the many wonderful fans like Nina_DS and movies_michelle and duenorthlaurie for episode discussion, and Sdwolfpup, Belmanoir, Aingeal8C as content creators, or Scotchsour, and Lozenger8 who made some banging icons....Truly, there were so many wonderful people, I couldn't even name them all. Due South provided so many wonderful glimpses of other fans to share with. LJ friends were so lovely.

I fell out in LJ world strangely cause I felt kinda outside the fandom wave as it crested I think, not shipping F/K or really loving those seasons as much. And just personally felt not into fannishness as whole after awhile. It's a me thing across everything, not just Due South. I took an internet break for a long time. I still watched the series on tv, with Showcase and TV Tropolis and DejaView lol, and by then DVD often. Along with new TV of course, although not much cause Tumblr me is not too different from old LJ me. Still kept an eye of forums, sometimes, or such, cause I love discussion as you can see by my screeds versus tech/creative skills, but not actively or with comment.

I return cause, I don't know, seeing people express love for the series again is hitting a happy place of nostaglia I think. I had a rough bout with real-life and comfort fannish stuff is reminding life was full of small good moments. The joy of the endearing nature of the show and the spirit of love for it in the fandom is proof of stuff enduring. Joy that it's still on rebranded Showcase here on the weekends lol, even if you never know which season.

And a new vidder made a wonderful F/V fanvid that, timing again as I hit Tumblr, I stumbled into, and just had me crying when I watched at the beauty and love I remembered in the pair. It spoke to my love of them so hard I think it jolted me into thinking hell yea that love deserves happy expression, I can do it too maybe. Sadly they took it down, but yeah, that was the spark, and that's me fannish story.

Like, it's wild to me that some folks in this fandom are still trying to do discourse eight years later, when for the life of me I cannot be bothered about who enjoys x character from y media during a time of unprecedented actual real world problems for everyone, especially the LGBTQIA+ community. Yes, Victoria Chase from Life is Strange is a bitch and not very nice and a bully and she does some very bad things. You don't need to breathlessly remind me of this because chances are I've spent way more time obsessing over every line, action, and facial tic for this girl than any of her haters ever would, and because it's those very traits that make her fascinating to me and a character worthy of deeper exploration. Just like Azula, or Ianthe, or Catra, or Villainelle, or Regina, or any number of Very Bad Women doing Very Bad Things that have captured the hearts and imaginations of sapphics who just want to simp for iconic (and again, entirely fictional) mean girls as a way to pass the time in a world much crueler to us than a character in a video game or tv show or book or [insert media of your choice] could ever be. What I'm asking anyone for whom this may concern is to: A.) Who here is willing to volunteer themselves to write Max Caulfield, Private Investigator?

Mystery/Thriller series, time travel, mystery solving, and photography, not to mention her chauffeur, bodyguard, and general partner in both crime and time Chloe Price. She’d take jobs like Sherlock Holmes, people would write to her or message her and she’d take the interesting ones, the ones no one else takes a chance on. Her evidence is always accompanied by Polaroid photos that no one knows how she gets, and she always gets it without leaving a trace. No one knows how she does it, they just know that she’s the best. It would be epic. It would be iconic. I can’t do it. Someone has to.

Like she could get cases from all our favourite characters, from Kate to Victoria, maybe even Steph in Haven Springs, even go down to David in Away. Could be post-canon or full AU. Some gimmicky noir stuff, some serious intrigue, it would be cool as shit.

Just imagine it;

Max Caulfield shuffled through her letters with a mild passivity, the kind of apathy that comes from the doing of a thing you’ve done a million times. i wasn’t gonna say anything about this cause i don’t feel like i owe any explanations but it keeps coming back to my lil brain so… yes, i do indeed have an “ eye candy ” tag. & just because i have one, doesn’t mean i’m “ face chasing ” or only following people for their face claims. it’s literally 2023, who still follows people because of faceclaims ?

now, of course i have my favorites, who doesn’t ? if you say you don’t, you’re a liar who lies. but i literally don’t care who your face claim is. actually, a majority of people i write with don’t use icons / gifs at all, so it’s not like i’d even be seeing them most of the time. also, a lot of people use aesthetic dash icons that don’t have their faceclaim even in it, so you literally can’t tell unless you look on their blog. & personally, i follow people who i can see myself writing with and most of the time i follow people before i can even see who their faceclaim is.

my “ eye candy ” tag is me reblogging people who stefan or myself find attractive as well as faces / muses i don’t have a specific tag for. i want to keep track in case i forget a face i may want to use in the future or if someone wants suggestions for a muse i can say oh here’s a tag you can browse or whatever. honestly, who’s gonna sit there & tag every single face they come across that they like / want to write / write against ? or every single ship partners faceclaim ? let me know,. also, what’s wrong with having a tag of desired faceclaims or wanted opposites ? victoria justice voice : we ALL have preferences. ( and that’s okay ) & it does NOT mean i or anyone else who has said tags won’t write with someone just because they you don’t use a faceclaim we have a preference for.

it’s not a huge deal & i’m not going to stop using my tag. however, if you for real have a problem with it, let me know & i can always make tag you can block list or you can soft block. while i think it’s a silly thing to stop writing with people over, everyone does deserve to feel comfortable. i just had to get my own two cents in on this because someone recently vauged about this and it was specially directed at me so i wanted to say my side. sorry if this is messy, or repetitive, it’s 1:30 am.
