Bigger Than Love || Another (Happier) Arranged Marriage AU

Aahhhh... Bigger Than Love... because who doesn't love an Arranged Marriage Trope? 🤭 Let's Get Into It!

So this was Like Real People Do before I had the bright idea to turn it into the absurdly long fest of angst that will end with one single kiss 😅 but it has since pivoted to be what I hope is a fun twist on the Arranged Marriage trope.

It'll be set about 2-3 months post-canon, so feelings are still fresh all around. Wakanda and Talokan are both on the verge of civil war within themselves, and the alliance isn't going exactly the way leadership might've hoped. If you know me, you know I don't believe in doing things the easy way, so Shuri is still mad (and a little homicidal), Namor is unwilling to work with anyone other her, and M'Baku is ready to fully revert Wakanda back to T'Chaka levels of seclusion (Talokan and Western Powers be damned).

In all of this, our leading duo have found themselves as unlikely friends and equally matched sparring partners. There's just one rule though— no politics. They spar in the training arena, by the riverbank, in Okoye's backyard... but under no circumstances do they discuss the growing tensions between their two kingdoms. What happens in the throne room, stays in the throne room.

Until it doesn't of course...

Things are looking bleak for the alliance, and even finding moments to spar has become difficult with the pressures they're both facing. One night, Okoye jokingly suggests a marriage alliance might fix all of their problems. They both laugh it off, but when he's alone, the thought won't leave Attuma's mind. Peace matches are arranged all the time in Talokan; he's the product of one such marriage himself. Would marrying Okoye really be so bad? She may be a surface dweller, but she is the first equal he's met in far too long. But worries still linger: if they do marry, can he accept the potential risk of losing another so dear to his heart?

Okoye keeps trying to convince herself that she was joking. She couldn't possibly be willing to get married again— not after W'Kabi. But the more she thinks about it, thinks about him, the more she finds herself wanting. Her uncle has not relented in his quest to see her remarried, no matter how lacking she finds her suitors. Attuma wouldn't be marrying her for status, or money, or connections to her uncle or the crown. Theirs would be a mutually beneficial arrangment— the treaty could finally be formalized, they'd have peace in both their kingdoms, and maybe, just maybe, Attuma might end up wanting her too.

Thanks so much for the wonderful reception for Rolling Stone Issue 513. It has warmed my heart, and I’ve loved sharing it with you all. I’m still working on the playlist for Chrissy’s Mix, so if you have any suggestions for songs to put on there, I’d love to get them!

Now, on to what’s up next. I'm currently making minor edits to Of Evenings in the Woods, because apparently my poor FFN readers have been left in the lurch for more than ten years without a proper ending. I am so sorry for that. I literally have the draft of the last chapter but I never took the time to edit it? Anyway, I'm uploading the old chapters to AO3 first before I work on the last one.

While I edit these chapters and post them I also need to start the first draft of my next thing. At the moment, I feel I’ve got three options.

Unfortunately Hey There Demons is not one of them; my muse is leading me in other directions for the moment. Which is fine. It needs a lot more percolating in the brain.

I'm leaning one way, but I’ll see how you guys are feeling. My followers are a weird bunch anyway because tend to jump around from ship to ship. Here are the options:

1: Petticoats & Roses: another unfinished WIP that lurks under my floorboards. It’s metafictional Rob/Raven Regency AU I started about 14 years ago? There’s at least 7 chapters left to write, and I won’t start publishing again until I have all of the chapters through the third draft.

2: I Dreamt Of You: Cahir/Ciri, meant to be a one-shot but who knows with me. AU, Nilfgaard never went to war with Cintra. Cahir dreams of woman he’s never met; Emyhr arranges a marriage for his stubborn daughter.

3: this one fic that I will probably publish anonymously because it is *so dark* but IT JUST WON’T LEAVE ME ALONE

His obliviousness goes further though, for reasons that he himself hasn’t fully discovered and understood.

Curious as ever, Mattie often gets themselves into trouble. But with their charming personality and resourcefulness, they’re able to get themselves out of trouble. They are playful, enjoying the work of teasing others and instigating drama to get chaotic, and hopefully flustered, reactions. His skills and knowledge about the forest have proven him to be a good asset, but there is more to him than what meets the eye.

For someone who is so bright and playful, they can’t surely have anything to hide, right?

Drew Robins (he/him OR she/her) – When they are not working at their family’s restaurant or deliberately annoying their best friend Luisa, Drew is a recreational hobby addict. From drawing to sports to drink mixing to mountain climbing, Drew has tried just about everything. They aspire to create a life where money isn’t a concern and they can pursue every one of their passions freely. Drew is 23 years old and 6’1. Male Drew has relatively short curly blond hair, and female Drew has long curly blonde hair that reaches the middle of her back. Drew has pale blue eyes and is white.

Lorelei Wildes (she/her) – Once the most popular person in Banyan Gulf due to the extent of her family’s riches but now socially disgraced due to a family scandal, Lorelei is burnt out of the city. Her one aspiration now is to escape, buy herself a house so grand it’s a step short of a vacation resort close to the beach, and live in the most luxurious way possible. Lorelei is drawn to everything beautiful, everything restful, everything perfect. She is 24 years old and 5’8. Lorelei is white, with green eyes and light brown hair that almost reaches her waist.

Oscar Carter (he/him) – An aspiring screenwriter and film director, Oscar has his sights set on becoming the most renowned filmmaker in the world. It’s a sizable ambition, one many have told him is impossible, but through it all Oscar has remained a dreamer, an artist, and is making progress on his aspirations through directing music videos and short films. Oscar is 23 years old and 5’11. He is black, with dark eyes and black locs that reach just below his collarbones.

Ronan/Ruby Hall (he/him OR she/her)– With their eccentric sense of humor and work as a chef and part-time graphic designer, Hall is known for their individuality and drive to live in their own way. In the back of their mind they hold the goal of being a full-time artist someday when they have the time and focus to give to creating. For now, they’re content to live in their own chaos. Hall is 25 years old and 5’9. They are mixed Thai and white, with light brown eyes and black hair (an overgrown mid fade for Ronan, and hair that reaches just below her collarbones for Ruby).

It was the summer of 2010 when you found Jules Hawkins by the lake. But it didn't look like Jules Hawkins.

After all, how could it? Jules Hawkins was a god. And as you know, gods like Jules are unbreakable. If you knew anyone death couldn't touch, it was Jules. And yet, somehow it felt like you had never seen Jules look more like them than they did, that day, dead by the lake. Plump cherry lips, now parched and blue, dirt on their perfect knees, golden hair sticking to their forehead, exquisite clothes matted and muddied, skin, ghostly pale.

Even in death, even as Jules became a child of soil and dirt and ruin, Jules managed to look like art. How could this creature of beauty be anyone else but Jules Hawkins?

A string of murders follow the passing of Jules Hawkins and in the desperation of avoiding being tangled in the web of this cold blooded murderer, you end up right in the thick of it when you find out the killer may have set their eyes on you next.

Of course, you ended up in the killer's radar. You had always been a child of misfortune, after all.

Jules may be no more for the world but they are alive and breathing in your haywire brain and they are not very kind. Not that they ever were. But the Jules that haunts you, plagues you like a disease is ruthless with their words in a way the old Jules could never be. Not to you.

Lately, the air becomes laced with awkwardness when its just the two of you around. You wish you weren't fairly perceptive. Perhaps that could have made you oblivious to the way Warren's adams apple bobs and his throat tightens when you are around, the way his fists clench when his tongue slips or the way he glances at you thinking you didn't notice.

Description : Sharp jaw. Medium complexion. Monolid chocolate brown eyes. Straight eyebrows. Thin pinkish lips. 5'7. Athletic figure. Short dyed dark red hair.

JESSICA HAWKINS. [she/her]

Jules' twin. You never bothered to acquaint yourself with her. She had always seemed too saintly and your mother had taught you well to stay away from that kind. Those who hide their tainted souls behind rosemary lies, platinum smiles and bright eyes stitched from sunshine. Beware of them, your mother had told you. But is that what she truly is doing? Spinning honeyed tales from saccharine lips?

You would never know. Unless you choose to. If it helps, Jules lips always quirked upwards and the crease in their brows mellowed whenever her name rolled off their tongue.

Description : Kind almond shaped brown eyes. Long, thick lashes. Bow shaped lips. Arched eyebrows. High cheekbones. Straight blonde hair, reaching her back. Pale skin. Willowy frame. 5'10.

DYLAN JEANE. [he/him]

Jules' boyfriend, Dylan. Well, ex boyfriend now. He seems to harbour a deep dislike for you. No matter how hard he denies it— the slight tensing of the muscles in his jaw always give it away.

You had always been curious about him. Jules and him were an odd pair. How could Dylan be what Jules desired? They were polar opposites. Jules was tidal waves and traditional typhoons. He is ruddy sunsets and roseate dawns. He is habit, he is routine, he is rigid, he is never changing. A sad strange kind of tragedy. Jules was anything but that. Jules was everything at once. Jules was never the same. Jules was uneven. Jules was hurricanes and tsunamis.

There is a natural downwards turn to his lips, his shoulders always a little hunched as if the burdens of life have dripped down from the ceiling and chosen to settle like dust upon his shoulders. You wonder what weighs him down so terribly. He talks as if every breath he takes from his lungs rattles him to the core. Perhaps it does. He seems to have taken Jules' death as hard as you, if not worse.

Description : Short slicked back midnight black hair. Heavy lidded hazel eyes. Slender built. Wears rimless rectangular glasses occassionally. Angular face. Sharp lips. Upwards eyebrows. Fair skin. 6'1.

AIDEN HAMILTON. [he/him]

The second child of the sleazy mayor. Boy of many faces. You don't trust him one ounce. For good reasons. It irks you to watch his eyes glimmer as if you are a specimen that intrigues him. You don't trust the myriad of unhealthy secrets he hides behind his charming gaze, the sly smile that tugs off the corner of his lips or the disarming lilt of voice as his salty tongue rolls off silken threads of honeysuckle lies frictionlessly. It comes to him as naturally as breathing. The impurity of his father's gold taints him, it runs in his veins and he embraces it willfully.

He is hiding skeletons in his closets and everybody knows that. What it is however, is a different story.

Will he let you in on a secret?

Eldest child of the mayor. You are not particularly friends but she is not a bad company to have around either. You like her. You have met in passing and she always has a quick smile reserved for you. You know she is a dreamer with a pomegranate heart. She has also somehow inherited her mother's love of parties. Hers tend to be a little more wild and carefree, though. Just like her.

Uncharacteristically, she is also fond of painting. Will you be her muse?

With midnight eyes of catlike grace that could rival any godforsaken abyss and lips richer and darker than the blood running in your veins, she's the kind of girl that would skin you alive and chew on your fickle heart but then kiss your eyelids and tell you 'good night, baby' and you would like a lovesick dog spiral back to her, yearning for more.

Why? Because you are a fool? No. Because she was Mia Morgan and Mia Morgan was born for seduction and playing with the strings of childish hearts. A holy ruination. Destruction in its most, enchanting, enrapturing form.

Like it says on the tin, Boat is all about Okoye. More specifically, it is about her choosing her own peace and healing in a way I don't think we'll ever actually get to see on screen. One of Okoye's defining traits, especially in the MCU, is loyalty— almost to a fault. Babygirl has never turned her back on Wakanda.

Objectively, I think its fair to say that everyone in the MCU has been dealt a fair amount of trauma, something that Phase 4 really seems to be leaning into. There are characters, however, who I feel don't get to have their trauma addressed, let alone allow it to affect them. Okoye is one such character in my mind, especially after the events of both Black Panther movies. Like in timeline order we've got: Death of a Monarch (T'Chaka), Presumed Loss of Best Friend & Monarch, A Coup + Marital Betrayal (fucking Wastebasket), Big Ass Alien Battle Pt. 1, The Blip, Holding the Kingdom Down for 5 Fucking Years While the World Falls the Fuck Apart, Big Ass Alien Battle Pt. 2, Death of a Monarch (T'Challa), Ambush on the Bridge, Demotion (where doing her motherfucking job gets thrown back in her fucking face), Death of a Monarch (Ramonda), AND finally, the Battle of the Sea Leopard (where I presume there were a great many losses).

That's like three lifetimes of grief and pain, and what? She's supposed to just Strong Black Woman her way through it?? Bull. Shit.

My mini-rant aside, If I Had A Boat's main purpose is to explore that trauma and grief, and subsequent healing. Okoye is forced to choose between sacrificing her sanity for the sake of Wakanda or distancing herself in order to heal and in doing so, discover a purpose separate from serving the throne.

Spoiler: she chooses Option 2.

So much of her identity has been wrapped up in service, and she deserves a life outside of that. She deserves to heal away from the pressures and duties that comes with being "The Tip of the Spear of Wakanda's Army" or a Midnight Angel. So she goes to therapy, takes a fucking vacation, and learns that she has more life to live and more love to give.
