How to write a love-hate relationship

A love-hate relationship can be summed up with: 'Can't live with them, can't live without them.'

It's a relationship filled with strong emotions, where both participants seek each other out, but then fight about it.

Types of love-hate relationships

There are different types that can have a love-hate relationship: It can turn into a romantic relationship where the love-hate aspect creates a sexual tension between the characters. Or it can be a platonic relationship where a lot of bickering is involved, but also a lot of love for each other.

Examples:

siblings who always fight with each other, but also for each other

academic rivals that want to be the best, but also enjoy the competition with each other

a criminal and a police officer who are always on opposite sides, but have a deep respect for each other

the MC's best friends, who always fight for the MC's attention, but become best friends themselves in the process

From hate to love

In romance stories, love-hate relationships often turn from hate to love between the characters. To write this you need to think about the reason for the hate at first. Why do they dislike each other? Is it because of an event that took place? Something the other person did? Something they heard about that person? Or is it a character flaw they dislike about them?

After finding the reason behind the hate, you can now work on solving that problem. If it's an event or something they did, there can be an apology or a talk about a misunderstanding. If it's a character flaw they can work on themself or the other person starts to see that it's actually not a flaw, but something they start to like about that person.

You basically need to soften the interactions between both characters until they are ready to admit their love for each other. These interactions can become a humorous point in your story with a lot of banter.

Toxic relationships

It can be in the nature of a love-hate relationship to be toxic. The 'can't live with them, can't live without them' aspect creates a situation where the characters will be at each other's throats all the time, but they just can't leave the relationship. If you want your reader to read a more romantic, cute love-hate relationship, try to stay away from actual physical, psychological and verbal abuse. If they do something more than just banter, write how they realize their mistake and apologize and how they better themselves.

Sure, I love to remember the good old days before 'rona hit. These are going to be from my own experiences, so it may not be accurate for everyone.

How to write a college party

loud music already hitting you when you come close to the building

it's a mix of current music and music from when they were kids and a few bangers from when they were 15/16 and started going to clubs (it's all about the nostalgia)

despite the great music choices, there is normally a severe lack of dancing

party takes place in the apartment of a few roommates and most guests know only one of them and only barely

one of the roommates usually greats you with an awfully coloured shot at the door and tells you to just throw your jackets somewhere

there are a few rooms filled up with a lot of people at different ages (18-35 range)

there is also smoking inside, so prepare yourself to not get the smell out of hair and clothes for a couple days

the kitchen is always way too cramped and the counters are filled with so many different alcohols and a severe lack of food (the night already started with just one bag of potato chips)

there are few non-alcoholic drinks, mostly just for mixing, and people will not really pressure you to drink, but they will feel awkward if you don't and they will continue to ask you

the bedrooms are either closed or people are sitting on every possible surface in there and drink and talk

there is a lot of talking at college parties

popular topics: where are you from? which classes do you take? do you also start to wake up everyday with back pain?

you will also lose your friends a couple times and get really close with a bunch of psychology majors whose names you never learned and who you will never see again, but you do have their numbers saved in your phone as psych 1-5 for the duration of your college days

the other place that is always way too full is the living room aka the "beer pong room"

the beer pong table has a long waiting list and everyone's competitive nature gets worse the drunker they get

the bathroom also has a long waiting list

the queue (which goes down the whole hallway) is the one place where everyone slows down and checks their phones

it's also the one place where you find your friends again that you lost an hour earlier in the beer pong crowd

while waiting you will get weirdly invested in this one girl's drama, who cries in the hallway and swears off guys forever (you will later see her make out with someone, and maybe it's a guy, maybe not)

at 1:30 am someone decides to play flunky ball in the courtyard of the surrounding apartment buildings

which would be a very bad idea, because of the noise, but thankfully most of the neighbors are students too, so they just join in with their own beer

I hope I was able to describe a college party for you. Most parties are a chill hangout with a lot of alcohol. And some personal dramas. That you love to watch, but don't want to be involved in.

, idk i just get very frustrated at these things so i think im just gonna go back to posting when i wanna, like being so real its always been my dream to be a big account and share with my readers, and at my CORE i still wanna be that but the issue is i dont know WHERE to start, and its not like im a new writer i've been writing since i was like 15 (what i'd consider the writing i like) and im just so ????!! about it, like i feel so physically incapable of being a fandom writer like i can't explain it its everything i want but everytime i work towards it i just self implode and stop posting / stop writing, like i still wanna write OBVIOUSLY but the pressure of wanting to "make it big" destroys me like everytime idek? and it seems so easy when i think about it but then when i do it its like LOL NOPE idc idc how much effort you put in. and yes it could be the fact i've never posted a complete fic so there's really nothing for people to know me for, i just feel like people get "suprised" i write on here LIKE YEAH, i post like insanely haphazardly but yeah i do!! and it feels so preformative and ugh.
