LOL! 😂 which shows or movies are you referring to?

A few but the first/main one that came up in my head was the Minimoys Horror movie. Y‘know Arthur and the Minimoys? Starts out live action, kid gets shrunk tiny and turns into a 2000’s cgi minimoy/human-adjacent fantasy creature, goes with badgirl princess and short nerd minimoy to save them all from a tall evil dude? The minimoys kinda look like human Trolls dolls? Anyways, that one.

Yea so turns out the guy who made the movie thought it was a great idea to give his kids-movie-Trilogy a spinoff in the form of a psycho-horror slasher.

It was not very good.

In fact, it was so bad I wrote a whole reblog-chain of reactions to this movie when I watched it. (if i could find it there‘d be a link here.)

Anyways, along with such classics as "spooky deer motif that never ends up having any meaning“, dropping a single nickelodeon-level joke out of nowhere in the middle of the climax, and "it was LARPing drug users all along!“, was also the good ol' creepy old man trope.

Definitely spoiling this train wreck of a movie here, but during thr climax of the movie, the creepy old man (who gang suspected to be the murderer before) comes to their rescue, as he knows what was gonna happen around the villa that gang went to. But since he failed to make them stop their trip there, he decided to follow them to make sure they don‘t get murdered in the crossfire of all the deadly larping (i wish that sentence was a joke).

Which would‘ve been nice if his tactic of initially warning them wasn‘t to POINT HIS SHOTGUN AT THEIR FACES AND YELL AT THEM TO LEAVE IF THEY DONT WANT HIM TO SHOOT THEIR BRAINS OUT

like gg bro you did great. Now only most of them died, and one of them after they ran away from you cuz they thought you were gonna shoot them with the shotgun in your hands, like you previously said you would. Absolutely amazing 10/10 only needed more people dying from hugging trees lmao oof

I love this book to death, so here's some things I noticed <3

I think a lot about how common it is for Raph to be the one to have direct focus put on him when Leo gets into all his near death experiences.

Like, when Leo is thrown off a building, it’s Raph who’s right there jumping after him, not even thinking about the consequences to himself when he does. When Leo almost gets skewered by the Krang, Raph’s right there to take the blow and send Leo to safety without a second thought. When Leo’s being strangled to near death, it’s a Krangified Raph doing the job, doing exactly what Raph would never, ever want to do. When Leo is telling Casey Jr to close the portal, it’s Raph who tries desperately to convince Leo otherwise.

Likewise, Leo is consistently very single minded when Raph gets forcibly separated from them. Both when in the sewers and by the Krang, Leo is dead set on finding Raph first and foremost.

I also think it’s interesting that during each of Leo’s near death experiences, the lightheartedness of his words during them goes directly hand in hand with both how close Raph is to him physically and how much danger Raph is also in in that moment. From a literal “I told you so” as Leo’s falling away from Raph to a soft joke about how “hero moves” are Raph’s style - both of these are on the more morbidly carefree side and both of these notably take Leo farther away from Raph and, in turn, have Raph not in immediate danger.

On the other side of things is the apology from Leo, heedless of the danger he himself is in as he seriously and genuinely speaks to a Krangified Raph face to face. Then there’s Leo’s freezing and desperation as Raph takes a hit meant for him and sends just Leo to safety, leaving Raph himself behind. Both of these involve much closer proximity and Raph being directly harmed - these together make Leo much more vulnerable in his words and actions, something not even the threat of death can make him.

These two care about each other so much, and they’re way too much alike for their own good.

#rottmnt #rise of the teenage mutant ninja turtles #rottmnt raph #rise raph #rottmnt leo #rise leo #honorable mention to the time Leo desperately tried throwing himself into harm’s way to get to Karai #and Raph is the one who has to pull him back #I also think that it’s interesting how both of them go about self sacrifice #because wow they both have problems with it #Raph’s tends to be immediate reactions not even thinking as he throws himself over his bros #Leo’s are often shown to be ‘for the greater good’ (said greater good often being his family)#once again I am saying that post movie these two would likely have codependency issues #considering Raph’s already present acute seperation anxiety and Leo’s immediate memory of Raph standing over him bleeding #another thing to mention is how Future Leo’s actual death still falls into the whole ‘morbidly lighthearted words’ category #I also wanna point out that in Many Unhappy Returns the trust that Leo wants so much does NOT come from Splinter but from RAPH #side note but in regard to the fighting that Raph and Leo were up to during the time between the shredder and the krang #I think it’s interesting that it’s NOT depicted as screaming matches - very blatantly not this actually #also also! I totally love how the movie parallels Oroku Saki and Karai with Raph and Leo respectively #there are so many parallels in general in this show+movie it makes me froth at the mouth #and because it breaks my heart - the beginning of the movie had Raph getting angry at Leo and lashing out at him #the end of the movie has the Krang very very angry at Leo and lashing out at him #both of these times has Leo ‘ruining’ a mission so…bad parallels #in the movie as well there’s a Krangified Raph who beats Leo senseless #so I have to wonder if Raph and Leo just…can’t roughhouse anymore #else Leo would flinch or Raph would be so scared to accidentally hurt Leo like he was already used to do before #then suddenly their usual dynamic of Raph never having to be softer with Leo is thrown on its head #worse is if they’re so terrified of this dynamic leaving that they power through their own sufferings to maintain it

tired of early 20-somethings acting like harry potter was never good or had no value in its day like shut the fuck up half of you weren't even there when it peaked

#sit with the cognitive dissonance like the rest of us or shut up honestly #was it a product of its time yes #was it's author a very basic neoliberal white lady from a country with a long and unchecked imperialist history yes #was the story influenced by said neoliberal worldviews and unexamined biases obviously #does any of that make it a bad story or an unimaginative world no #you can pick apart any fantasy world if you try hard enough #harry potter was a good telling of the hero's journey written in the format of seven mystery novels set against a fantasy backdrop #we can certainly talk about its flaws or how the author's biases leaked onto the page #but stop acting like it was never good and there was never a reason those books resonated with people #it's condescending for one thing and again- if you're younger than like...24-25 you didn't actually experience the heyday of the books #if you're 25 now you'd have been like 8 or 9 when the last book came out and probably weren't reading them yet #you might remember the latter half of the movie era but you have no idea how much it was the BOOKS that drove its popularity #never before and never since has any book series had the fanfare that harry potter did and that didn't happen for no reason #so find a way to make peace with that instead of acting intellectually superior because you grew up with percy jackson instead #this 'well MY generation's preferred childhood book series is morally superior to YOURS so I'm better than you' shit drives me up a wall #like get over yourself honestly #...sorry had to get that off my chest there was this youtube video and it was irritating me

ik it’s probably a classic case of extrapolating way too much but... the way raph’s character design lines up w his whole arc and role and struggles...

like the fact that he is so so so much bigger than the others. raph is big, raph is strong, raph is steady and sturdy and he can literally pick up his entire family and carry them all at once.

and like, when raph is so big and so strong and such a reliable thing. when raph is the protector, the one calling the shots on missions, the mother hen, the first point of authority. when raph is there, overprotective, when raph (for all that his brothers poke at him not being good under pressure) always always ALWAYS comes through at the end of the day when things are serious, ALWAYS gives it everything he’s got.

his design and his learned role/behaviors in this family are just the perfect storm of why it took up to the season finale to drive home the issue.

so much of the series carries the default energy of “raph will handle it.”

raph will hold up the ceiling above you. raph will throw himself over you and take a hit and get back up and keep fighting. raph has a power that makes him even bigger and draws more attention and makes him able to carry MORE. raph will be the substitute parent. raph will be put into the mentor role through leo’s leadership arc.

and raph is big. he’s built to carry heavy loads. raph is strong. raph is bold and loud and always ready to try to push on. even if he doesn’t know what to do or what he’s doing, he won’t give up and we’ll all pull together and things will turn out okay.

(his room is full of teddy bears. he dipped out on a mission to try to take a picture of a pigeon carrying a slice of pizza. he’s terrified of being alone.

he’s just as much of a kid as his brothers are. he’s just as new and inexperienced with the things happening to them as his brothers are. but for him, for some reason, there’s like this double standard where that becomes a huge glaring flaw.)

idk this got very sloppy and uncoordinated. i’m very in my feelings about raph right now though.

Though I know the Good At Social Media thing to do would be to post about the #writing and share progress and talk about the game and characters or whatever to try to build interest or something but that is SOOO weird #to me.. I could maybe get it if it was like a tiny tiny discord groupchat of playtesters with like 5 people in #it.. But something about talking openly about things before they happen is weird to me?? Like presumptuous feeling or something #''oooo guess whats gonna happen LATER!!!'' like.. how do you know.. what if it doesnt. what if you dont finish it. what if its not the way #you think it's going to be. what if something changes. etc. Like I literally avoid movie trailers and game trailers for the same reason ghj #Even if it's not ME doing it it just feels... weird.. I can't ever DEFINITELY say with 100% certainty #that one could ACTUALLY come to my house in a few months. anything could change. So I have to allot for that in my phrasing. hbjjkn #There are a lot of situations where you're expected to just Assume Things but for some reason that bothers me. My brain literally does not #even Assume the most basic things.. like how do *I* know that just because it's someones birthday that they want to be wished a happy #birthday? what if they dont? everyone is different and has different preferences. I should check with them first. or wait until they public #ly announce that theyre accepting birthday wishes. I have to allot for all 5034859069 rare possibilities at any given time and never take #anything for certain. etc. ghjbjhbh.... ANYWAY.. I have been feeling a bit sick lately as usual.. but still slowly making progress on some #things. Moslty I need to edit costume photos. make sculptures. and work on the game. Going back reading some of the old writing from like #2018 and suprisingly I don't have to change that much of it? In fact I like it mostly. so that's good. I would be very interested if I were #playing the game myself. Though that doesnt mean much since my tastes are so niche lol..#Still really want to clear some of my million tumblr drafts as well... alas and aughh and ooughh and so on and so forth.
