A troubled actor is trying to resuscitate his career when he lands the lead role of a priest in a supernatural horror film about an exorcism. As unsettling events unfold, his "lucky break" takes a dark turn. The director, aiming for authenticity, subjects the struggling actor to humiliating treatment, forcing him to confront past traumas and accelerating his decline. Witnessing his suffering, Anthony’s estranged daughter, Lee, turns to the film's priest advisor, Father Conor, for help. Has the pressure of making the film sent Anthony back to his old addictions, or has it opened a portal to something more sinister?

Los Angeles native Joshua Miller is an actor, writer and director. With his life partner Marc Fortin, he co-created the hit Netflix series Queen of the South and co-wrote and produced Sony's critically acclaimed The Final Girls. He made his acting debut at age eight in Halloween lll: Season of the Witch and was the lead in cult classics River's Edge and Kathryn Bigelow's Near Dark. Additionally, Miller, while an undergrad at Yale, published his first novel, The Mao Game. He worked in journalism writing for such publications as Harper’s Bazaar and Esquire, and recently completed his soon to be published second novel, I'll Be Your Mirror.

Mark Fortin, born in Montreal, is a graduate of Emerson College and the ART Institute at Harvard University. He is currently at work on a true crime book set in 1980s Los Angeles and together with Joshua is developing The Diaries of Anaïs Nin with Pablo Larrain/Fabula pictures.

The music heard in the background during this episode is from THE EXORCISM, by composers Daniel Bensi and Saunder Jurriaans.

Vertical will release THE EXORCISM in theaters on June 21st, 2024.

Aa Hanako-kun. The verticality that the artists (? I assume AidaIro both do the art since it’s so gonzo detailed) like to use is always so fun. People are just zooming up down in and out of the supernatural spaces.

The sense of three-dimensionality in backgrounds/setting also makes the characters’ movements so much more fun when they cross from one plane to another. How to say. The confrontation in the Hell of Mirrors has the protag gang on a solid ledge and the antag gang floating in midair, looking down, so when Kou bounds up to stand on the railing he’s not just going to the edge or approaching Mitsuba, he’s crossing from the 2 dimensions of the protagonists/humans to the 3 dimensions of the antagonists/supernaturals. it’s lovely (:

Arcade about little squares. I call it as a word blocks. Simple game about how you are as a little square - are catching another little squares. 3 positions at the screen (left, right, middle). And space – action button. To catch a blocks – gain scores. Simple little game with not long levels. But, there are lots of them!

You are standing in a line. It is such a strip in a middle of the screen. And, you have only three steps. To the left and to the right. Three states. Central, left, and right. And with space you are catching little squares (blocks), which are, someway, moving to your side. If you want, you can count, that they are falling into the glass, something like from the top. Or you are flying in space about a straight line or by a road (highway) you are moving. It is a thing about your imagination.

THE EXORCISM starring RUSSELL CROWE; sets theatrical release for JUNE 7, 2024.

Vertical has acquired North American rights to the horror film The Exorcism (aka The Georgetown Project) starring Academy Award®-Winner Russell Crowe (Gladiator, A Beautiful Mind).

From Miramax, producer Kevin Williamson and Outerbanks Entertainment, the film is directed by Joshua John Miller and written by Miller and M.A. Fortin, the creators of the hit series Queen of The South and the writers and producers of The Final Girls. In addition to Crowe, the film stars Ryan Simpkins (Fear Street Trilogy), Sam Worthington (Avatar: The Way of Water), Chloe Bailey (Praise This), Adam Goldberg (The Equalizer) and David Hyde Pierce (Frasier).

The film will have an exclusive theatrical release beginning on June 7, 2024. Shudder, AMC Networks’ premiere streaming service for horror, thriller and the supernatural, has acquired pay 1 rights to the film. The Exorcism follows Anthony Miller (Crowe), a troubled actor who begins to unravel while shooting a supernatural horror film. His estranged daughter (Simpkins) wonders if he's slipping back into his past addictions or if there's something more sinister at play.

The Exorcism marks the sophomore outing as director for Joshua John Miller after an extensive career acting, producing, and writing. He began his career as one of the leads in Kathryn Bigelow’s vampire classic Near Dark. Miller brings decades of knowledge of horror films to the table, as well as familial connections in his father, Jason Miller, who portrayed Father Damien Karras in The Exorcist (1973), and his mother, Susan Bernard, who was a Scream Queen.

Filmmakers Miller and Fortin said, “Vertical has been a great partner in helping us complete and realize our vision for this story. Their level of enthusiasm and support are rare to find.”

Vertical Partner Peter Jarowey said, “Joshua has a profound expertise in this genre, and we applaud his creation of a film that reverently nods to classic horror while adding a fresh twist. We want to thank everyone at Miramax for their partnership and are looking forward to bringing the film to theatres nationwide this summer.”

The Exorcism is produced by Miramax, Kevin Williamson, Ben Fast, and Bill Block. Padraic McKinley, Scott Putman, Andrew Golov, and Thom Zadra serve as executive producers.
